Amber Alert issued for abducted Pennsylvania girl, 2, state police say

Authorities in Pennsylvania issued an Amber Alert late Saturday after a toddler was abducted in the western part of the state, according to officials.

The Pennsylvania State Police said on Facebook that Nalani Johnson, 2, was last seen at the intersection of Bryant and Clay Drives in the township of Penn Hills, located just outside Pittsburgh.

The 2-year-old was last seen wearing a black shirt and skirt with floral design and black sandals.

“Johnson was abducted by Sharena Nancy, 25 who has black hair and brown eyes,” state police said.

FAMILY, OTHERS APPEAR TO TAKE COVER DURING TEXAS SHOOTING

Family members told WPXI that Nancy was a jitney driver who had given a ride to Nalani, her father, and a friend. When Nalani’s father got out of the vehicle, Nancy allegedly sped away with the child.

“She was in a car seat in the back and he went around to get the car seat out with his daughter. And at the time he had his hand on the door and she drove off,” Nalani’s grandfather, Paul Johnson, told WPXI.

Pennsylvania State Police said Nancy was driving a 2017 black Toyota Prius with PA plate KLW3926 with an Uber sticker on the front passenger side window.

That vehicle was later located Saturday night on Rodi Road in the Penn Hills area with Nancy inside. The 25-year-old is now being questioned by police and no charges have been filed, WTAE reported.

Nalani, however, has not yet been found, according to police.

Hurricane Dorian bears down on Bahamas with 160 mph winds as islands hunker down, ‘taking no chances’

A menacing Hurricane Dorian took aim at the northern Bahamas early Sunday, strengthening to a “catastrophic” Category 5 storm packing winds of 160 mph and the threat of torrential rain that could last for days as millions in the U.S. along the Southeast coast from Florida to North Carolina are keeping an eye on where the storm may head next.

The National Hurricane Center as of 8 a.m. Sunday reported the center of the Category 5 storm was located around 35 miles east of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas and 225 miles east of West Palm Beach, as it was moving west at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph.

Dorian is an “extremely dangerous” hurricane according to Fox News Senior Meteorologist Janice Dean, who said the storm is set to deliver a “devastating blow” to the northwest Bahamas Sunday through Monday.

In the northern stretches of the Bahamas archipelago, hotels closed, residents boarded up homes and officials hired boats to move people from low-lying areas to bigger islands as Dorian approached.

Government spokesman Kevin Harris said Sunday that Dorian was expected to impact some 73,000 residents and 21,000 homes. Authorities closed airports for The Abaco Islands, Grand Bahama, and Bimini, but Lynden Pindling International Airport at the capital of Nassau remained open.

Jeffrey Allen, who lives in Freeport on Grand Bahama, told the Associated Press he had learned after several storms that sometimes predictions of damage don’t materialize, but he still takes precautions.

“It’s almost as if you wait with anticipation, hoping that it’s never as bad as they say it will be. However, you prepare for the worst nonetheless,” he said.

Forecasters warn that Dorian’s slow-motion may bring a prolonged period of life-threatening storm surge, devastating hurricane-force winds, and heavy rains capable of producing life-threatening flash floods on the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama through Monday.

Between 12 to 24 inches of rain is forecast for the northwestern Bahamas, with isolated amounts up to 30 inches, according to the NHC. Dorian is also forecast to bring a life-threatening storm surge with water levels raised as much as 15 to 20 feet above normal in areas of onshore winds on the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island.

“Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves,” the NHC said.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis asked Floridians to keep the Bahamas in their thoughts while also preparing for whatever impacts Dorian may bring.

“The Bahamas are going to get absolutely leveled by this thing because this thing’s a strong storm. The Bahamas are flat,” DeSantis said Saturday. They got no defense to this storm and it’s going to churn over there; it’s going to dump perhaps two feet of rain on the Bahamas.”

DORIAN NEARS BAHAMAS BRINGING 150 MPH WINDS, THREAT OF STORM SURGE; TRUMP WARNS IT COULD BE AMONG ‘STRONGEST’ TO HIT IN DECADES

Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis warned that Dorian is a “dangerous storm” and said any “who do not evacuate are placing themselves in extreme danger and can expect a catastrophic consequence.”

Small skiffs shuttled Saturday between outlying fishing communities and McLean’s Town, a settlement of a few dozen homes at the eastern end of Grand Bahama island, about 150 miles from Florida’s Atlantic coast. Most people came from Sweeting Cay, a fishing town of a few hundred people about 5 feet above sea level.

“We’re not taking no chances,” Margaret Bassett, a ferry boat driver for the Deep Water Cay resort, told the AP. “They said evacuate, you have to evacuate.”

The slow-moving storm may take until Monday afternoon to pass over the Bahamas, and then turn sharply and skirt up the U.S. coast, possibly staying just off Florida and Georgia on Tuesday and Wednesday and then affecting South Carolina and North Carolina on Thursday.

But forecasters warn that Dorian’s path could easily shift and bring some of the worst conditions to coastal locations.

“If there is a difference in the track by 30 miles, that’s the difference between tropical-storm-force and hurricane winds,” Dean said Sunday on “Fox & Friends.” That’s why we have to wait for every forecast.”

A frightening video posted on Facebook shows what appears to be family members and others desperately trying to protect themselves during Saturday’s deadly shooting rampage in West Texas.

The video, which lasts less than a minute, is posted under the name Antonio Orozco Garcia. It is titled “Dios mio por favor protegenos” (“My God, please protect us”).

AT LEAST 24 SHOT, 5 KILLED IN WEST TEXAS RAMPAGE, OFFICIAL SAYS; SUSPECT DEAD

The location appeared to be an empty lot near the Odessa, Texas, movie theater where police ultimately killed the suspect, the Dallas Morning News reported.

In the video, a man is heard telling others, “Get down! Get down! I got you, I got you.” A couple of women are seen trying to cover young children as they all lie on the ground.

When the first shots are fired, children immediately scream in terror. The man then tries to console others, including crying children, as gunshots are heard in the distance.

“Who’s shooting, Dad?” a child is heard asking.

“It’s OK, it’s OK. You’re going to be OK,” the man tries to reassure the group. He then shouts to individuals, asking if they are OK.

No one in the video appears to have gotten injured but the video ends abruptly. The fate of the people appearing in it remained unclear.

Tougher security measures will soon be in place at public-school sports events in Mobile, Ala., following a shooting Friday that left nine people injured after a high school football game.

“Our children and their families deserve to enjoy a high school football game or any public event without the thought of gun violence,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said in a statement Saturday. “As a community, we will heal. As a community, we have to get the guns out of the hands of our youth.”

GUNFIRE AT ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME LEAVES AT LEAST 6 SHOT: REPORTS

Teen suspect arrested

A 17-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with nine counts of attempted murder Saturday in connection with the gunfire at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Mobile’s FOX 10 reported.

The suspect was clearly seen firing shots in footage captured by surveillance cameras, Mobile police Chief Lawrence Battiste said, according to the Associated Press.

Police believe the teen was the only shooter, but believe some adults were aware the attack might be coming, Battiste said, urging those people to speak with police.

The shooting occurred after a game between LeFlore High School and Williamson High School. Police said the suspect was a LeFlore student. Fox News is withholding the suspect’s name because he is a minor.

Expected to survive

The chief said six people were shot “directly.” It was unclear if the other three victims suffered gunshot wounds or other injuries. Six of the nine people injured had been released from the hospital by Saturday, Battiste told AL.com.

All nine victims, ranging in age from 15 to 18, were expected to survive, the chief said.

A 10th injury was attributed to a seizure that one person suffered during the commotion caused by the shooting, the newspaper reported.

One woman died and nine others were sickened by an unidentified poisonous chemical Saturday morning at a hotel in San Jose, Calif., according to local reports.

Firefighters responded to a report of a suicide on the 19th floor of the Fairmont Hotel after a hotel employee found a woman dead in one of the rooms and smelled a strong chemical odor, according to The Mercury News.

The San Jose Fire Department described it as a “rotten egg smell,” the Bay Area’s FOX 2 reported.

Seven employees and two guests were decontaminated and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening ailments, including lightheadedness and shortness of breath, San Jose Fire Department Capt. Mitch Matlow said, according to The Mercury News.

Nearly 80 rooms, accommodating some 120 guests, were evacuated, he told FOX 2. Surrounding streets were shut down for hours as authorities investigated.

Matlow said the “hazard” was confined to the room where the woman was found dead.

“It stinks now but it’s not toxic,” he added. The 19th floor remained closed as of Saturday afternoon, The Mercury News reported.

Remarks against Antifa prompt FBI seizure of former Marine’s weapons under Oregon’s ‘red flag’ law: reports

A former Marine who said at a protest that he would “slaughter” Antifa members in self-defense, if attacked, recently had his five weapons confiscated by the FBI, according to reports.

The temporary seizure came through the use of Oregon’s “red flag” law, which allows law enforcement agencies and family members to seek a court order to have weapons taken away from an individual viewed as potentially violent. Such laws are often opposed by supporters of Second Amendment gun rights.

The former Marine, Shane Kohfield, 32, was not charged with any crime, but surrendered five guns, including an AR-15 rifle, according to Phil Lemman, Oregon’s acting deputy state court administrator, the Washington Examiner reported.

‘I AM ANTIFA’ PROFESSOR WHO POSTED DESIRE TO HIT TRUMP WITH BAT RESIGNS FROM POST

The action was reportedly prompted by remarks Kohfield made in public during a demonstration outside the home of Portland, Ore., Mayor Ted Wheeler in August, the Oregonian/OregonLive reported.

“If Antifa gets to the point where they start killing us, I’m going to kill them next,” Kohfield told a crowd, according to the Oregonian. “I’d slaughter them, and I have a detailed plan on how I would wipe out Antifa.”

Kohfield previously wrote to U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, a former Navy SEAL, to share his concern about Antifa and voice his support for having the group declared a terrorist organization, a step that President Trump has considered.

Portland has been the site of frequent violent clashes between members of far-left Antifa and supporters of conservative groups such as Proud Boys. The mayor and other city officials have faced criticism for their handling of such events.

Based on the court order, Kohfield – who served two tours of duty in Iraq — was committed to a veterans hospital for 20 days and was barred from participating in subsequent protests in Portland.

According to the Oregonian, Kohfield conceded that he probably appeared threatening to other people, but he never intended to cause harm.

“I looked unhinged,” he told the newspaper. “I looked dangerous and have the training to be dangerous.”

The FBI would not comment about the case, the Oregonian reported. It was unclear when Kohfield’s weapons would be returned to him.

The Oregon Legislature narrowly passed the state’s red-flag law in 2017, with no Republican support in the House and backing from only one Republican in the Senate. Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat, signed the bill into law on Aug. 15 of that year and the law took effect Jan. 1, 2018.

A Maryland man was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in a Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors out of more than $20 million, the Justice Department announced this week.

Bradley Mascho, 53, pleaded guilty in June 2018 to charges of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and making a false statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He was sentenced Wednesday in Greenbelt, Md. federal court.

Prosecutors say Mascho admitted to working with investment adviser Dawn Bennett to solicit $20 million from more than 40 different investors in Bennett’s online luxury sportswear retalier, DJBennett.com, between December 2014 and April 2017. That money, authorities say, was used to pay Bennett and Mascho’s personal expenses and repay prior investors, though prosecutors noted that Mascho misappropriated the funds “to a less extent” than Bennett.

CANNABIS INVESTOR DONATES $9M TO HARVARD, MIT FOR MARIJUANA RESEARCH

“This is consistent with a Ponzi scheme — a fraudulent investment scheme in which the operator of the scheme solicits investors by promising high rates of return with little risk,” the Justice Department said. “The scheme operator then funds payments to the earlier investors through funds obtained through new investors. Typically, the operator of the scheme will use investment funds for purposes other than what was conveyed to the investors.”

The FBI began investigating Bennett in December 2015 after the SEC formally accused her of defrauding investors by inflating the amount of assets she managed and exaggerating the returns on her customers’ investments.

Prosecutors said Bennett didn’t tell investors in her luxury sportswear company that she was using their money to pay off other investors or to cover personal expenses, including more than $141,000 on astrological gems, more than $100,000 on cosmetic medical procedures and a $500,000 annual lease for a luxury suite at the Dallas Cowboys’ home stadium.

An FBI agent’s affidavit said investigators found evidence in Bennett’s home that she tried to silence SEC investigators by paying more than $800,000 for prayers by Hindu priests in India to ward off federal investigators.

Bennett, 56, was convicted of securities fraud, wire fraud and bank fraud this past October and was sentenced to 20 years in prison on July 31. She was also ordered to pay more than $14.5 million and forfeit over $14.3 million.
