An Arizona mother accused of starving her 3-year-old son to death and storing his body in a toy chest has been found guilty of first-degree murder and child abuse.

Raquel Barreras, 44, of Tuscon, was convicted on Friday, KGUN-TV reported.

According to the media outlet, prosecutors said Barreras and her husband Martin starved their son Roman and didn’t allow anyone to feed him.

ARIZONA COUPLE ARRESTED AFTER CHILD’S REMAINS FOUND IN TOY CHEST

Barreras pleaded guilty to the crime and her lawyer said she was a drug addict who was struggling financially.

In opening statements, her defense pushed back on claims she murdered her son and said Roman was a “medically compromised” child, according to The Mirror.

The Tucson couple was arrested in March 2014 after human remains believed to be those of their son were found in a plastic toy chest in the backyard of a home where the family had been living.

According to Tucson police, the remains were discovered by a landlord who was cleaning the home as the family was in the process of moving out.

It’s believed Roman died sometime between the spring of 2013 and January 2014 and, the Mirror reported, according to an autopsy report, he died from starvation and neglect.

The couple has four other children.

MOTHER SAYS DAUGHTER WAS BITTEN MORE THAN 25 TIMES AT ARIZONA DAYCARE

In 2014, Authorities said that their three youngest children, who were minors, were turned over to Child Protective Services (CPS).

Police said the other children did not appear to have any signs of abuse, but the children reportedly did not attend school regularly.

Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villasenor said the family had previous contact with CPS and the agency had taken the children away before but returned them to the parents.

In fact, The Arizona Department of Child Safety reportedly removed Roman and three of his older siblings from his parents after his birth in July 2010 due to drug exposure.

However, a year later, Roman was back with his father, who has also been charged with first-degree murder and is scheduled for trial in August.

A passenger on the chartered jet that crashed into a river at a military base in Florida said passengers initially were told the aircraft might not be fit for takeoff. Then the flight was cleared to leave Cuba, but with the warning there would be no air conditioning.

Darwing Silva told the Tampa Bay Times that even though the plane was hot, there were no other problems during the flight from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

He said the landing at Naval Air Station Jacksonville seemed normal at first, but then the plane didn’t stop on the runway. He says there was a loud bang, he hit his head on the ceiling, and the jet ended up in the water. He says he ushered people out an emergency door onto a wing.

A Texas bartender accused of serving an intoxicated man who later went on to kill 8 people during a shooting rampage at a football watch party in 2017 was charged Tuesday with a misdemeanor.

Lindsey Glass, 27, was arrested Tuesday and faces a fine up to $500, a year in jail, or both, after allegedly violating a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code that restricts “sale to certain persons.”

“A person commits an offense if the person with criminal negligence sells an alcoholic beverage to an habitual drunkard or an intoxicated or insane person,” according to the code.

Glass worked at the Local Public House in Plano, where Spencer Hight showed up on the night of Sept. 10, 2017, and was served despite displaying signs of intoxication at the bar.

In a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission report obtained by NBC5, Glass had texted another bartender saying that Hight was in the bar earlier that day and “had 2 gins and he only had 2 beers and a shot when he came back [sic] I think he was at another bar while he was gone.”

She sent another text that read, “Spencer has a big knife on the bar and is spinning it and just asked for his tab and said I have to go do some dirty work … Psychoooooooo,” according to the report obtained by NBC5.

Hight left the bar and barged into the home of his ex-wife, Meredith Hight, killing 8 people before he was shot and killed by police. The Collin County medical examiner’s office found that Hight had a blood alcohol level of 0.33 during the shooting, which is about four times the state’s legal limit for driving. Police said that Glass did later follow Hight to the home and called 911 before leaving, but it wasn’t soon enough.

The victims’ families have since filed a lawsuit against the bar for negligence for overserving Hight. The lawsuit states that Hight was stumbling around the bar and “ran into a large picnic table on the patio hard enough to move the table. He staggered back inside and again took a seat at the bar.”

The defendants have denied the allegations.

In a settlement with the TABC last year, Local Public House agreed to give up its liquor license after the shooting. Under the settlement, the bar’s permit holder didn’t admit to wrongdoing.

“This case shows the critically important role that TABC-licensed businesses play in upholding public safety,” said Bentley Nettles, the commission’s executive director. “Anyone, including customers, business owners, or employees, should contact their local police any time they suspect a threat to the public. In some cases, shootings like this can be stopped before a life is lost.”

Local Public House’s attorney, Ryan Hughes, declined to comment to the Associated Press at the time.

A federal judge in Detroit worked until his recent death at age 96. But one case outlived Damon Keith: the longest-running housing discrimination lawsuit in the United States.

Hamtramck, a tiny Detroit-area city, must provide 200 family housing units to atone for discriminating against black families that were forced out in the 1950s and ’60s.

Hamtramck still has three houses left to build — 48 years after Keith said the city had intentionally removed blacks.

Officials predict the remaining homes could be built this year. Chronic financial problems and political battles had prevented Hamtramck from fulfilling the remedy much earlier.

Mayor Karen Majewski (My-ES’-ski) says it’s unfortunate that the judge won’t see the finish. She says, “The end really is around the corner.”

Biden, Buttigieg are keeping 2020 focus on South Carolina

Democrat Joe Biden’s visit to a South Carolina church Sunday is part of his 2020 presidential campaign’s outreach to black voters, who play a pivotal role in the early-voting state’s primary.

The former vice president is wrapping up his first stop in South Carolina since joining the packed field of Democrats by attending services in West Columbia. Biden told a crowd at a Columbia community center on Saturday that Jim Crow is “sneaking back in” as he emphasized the need to protect voting rights, an effort he said is lacking under the Trump administration.

Pete Buttigieg plans a town hall in North Charleston, where African Americans account for nearly half the population. The mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has said he’s making a conscious effort in his campaign to focus on issues important to black voters.

This past week he met with the Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights leader, at the Harlem soul food restaurant Sylvia’s. Buttigieg said Sharpton encouraged him “to engage with people who may not find their way to me who I need to go out and find my way in front of.”

Iowa is the focus Sunday for former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. California Sen. Kamala Harris plans to attend an NAACP dinner in Detroit.

A Maryland woman consumed with finding those responsible for the death of her twin sister 23 years ago is using billboards to renew interest in the cold case.

Jennifer LeCornu Carrieri was inspired by the film “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” to put up three billboards asking for help in finding the killer, or killers, of her sibling Jody LeCornu, FOX 5 of Washington reported. In the Hollywood film, a woman rents three billboards to bring attention to her daughter’s unsolved rape and murder.

“I feel like there’s people out there who know something,” Carrieri told the Baltimore Sun when she placed her first billboard in the Baltimore area in 2018. “I don’t want her to be forgotten.”

The billboards read “FIND MY KILLER” and show a photo of a smiling Jody LeCornu. A $100,000 reward offer is also posted.

LeCornu was killed March 2, 1996, while in a parking lot making phone calls inside a white Honda Civic in Towson, Md., according to the Sun. Someone drove up to the vehicle and fired a gunshot from behind, striking her back. She was able to drive across the street to another parking lot, where she was found just before 4 a.m.

Witnesses said a stocky man in a white BMW followed her car and then removed something from inside her car and drove off.

In her fight for justice, Carrieri has written to prisoners, investigated her sister’s death on her own and sued for police information.

The billboards have led to some tips, Carrieri recently told the paper, but Baltimore County police said the information has not led to any credible leads about the case, the FOX 5 reported.

“I want to find her killer, and I feel, I really feel that there’s a lot that hasn’t been done in her case. … I mean, from my own investigation,” Carrieri said.

Former President Barack Obama now has a second stretch of roadway named for him in Los Angeles.

On Saturday, thousands gathered for the renaming of Rodeo Road to “President Barack Obama Boulevard,” a 3.5-mile street that runs through the historically black Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw neighborhood.

The former president was not in attendance as onlookers celebrated his legacy at a spot where he held a presidential campaign rally in 2007, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“As we drive through this city and we see past presidents on Adams, on Washington, on Jefferson and now we’ll have one that was in our lifetime, who was a president for everybody: Barack Hussein Obama,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said, according to the Times.

Obama Boulevard intersects with “Presidents Row,” a collection of streets named after former presidents George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

The stretch of Rodeo Road — not to be confused with Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills — was the second roadway in Los Angeles to be renamed after Obama. Part of Highway 134 near Occidental College – where Obama was briefly enrolled – was renamed last year as President Barack H. Obama Highway.

The former president has been a frequent presence in Southern California in recent years. In a Beverly Hills fundraiser last year, he chided “the other side” of the political divide for being “angry all the time.” In the lead-up to the 2018 midterm elections, he rallied support for Democratic candidates during a speech in Anaheim.

Emergency responders in Maryland say they have recovered the bodies of two men who were aboard a helicopter that plunged into the Chesapeake Bay on Saturday evening, according to a report.

The dead men were identified as pilot Charles Knight, 38, of Mount Airy, Md., and passenger Matt Clark, 36, of Pasadena, Md.

Wreckage of the helicopter was found about 6 p.m. “in about 55 feet of water,” Capt. Brian Albert of the Maryland Natural Resources Police said in a statement, ABC News reported.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it received a call about the crash about 12:30 p.m. and began searching for the aircraft, FOX 5 of Washington, D.C., reported.

Authorities told FOX 5 that the Guinbal Cabri G2GL helicopter had taken off from Tipton Airport near Fort Meade and crashed southeast of Bloody Point, about 1 mile south of Kent Island.

County Emergency Services Department Assistant Chief Scott Wheatley said debris from the wreck dotted the water.

The father of a California man who was killed while vacationing in Mexico last year recently spotted a potential clue that could help investigators locate his son’s killers.

Kris Meyer was recently closing out his late son Taylor’s bank account, he said, when he spotted two suspicious transactions from Dec. 7 from Oklahoma City banks, KNBC-TV in Los Angeles reported. On Friday, Oklahoma City police released security photos of a man and woman at an ATM drive-thru trying to use Taylor Meyer’s credit card.

“Seeing the person that could potentially — either he could have been involved in the murder or has connections to the people who were involved in the murder — it gave me a very eerie feeling,” Kris Meyer told the news station.

Taylor Meyer, 27, was robbed and stabbed to death in November while in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, celebrating a friend’s 30th birthday. The grieving father believes his son was killed after withdrawing money from an ATM.

Before finding the suspicious banking transactions, Meyer feared the murder investigation into Taylor’s death was going cold.

He told the Los Angeles station he forgives the killer, or killers, but wants them brought to justice.
