Remarks against Antifa prompt FBI seizure of former Marine’s weapons under Oregon’s ‘red flag’ law: reports

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6075249703001_6075241360001-vs Remarks against Antifa prompt FBI seizure of former Marine’s weapons under Oregon’s ‘red flag’ law: reports fox-news/us/us-regions/west/oregon fox-news/us/personal-freedoms/second-amendment fox-news/us/military/marines fox-news/us/crime/antifa fox news fnc/us fnc Dom Calicchio article 4660fea6-7df3-56f9-ae23-ec6ce4a1859e

A former Marine who said at a protest that he would “slaughter” Antifa members in self-defense, if attacked, recently had his five weapons confiscated by the FBI, according to reports.

The temporary seizure came through the use of Oregon’s “red flag” law, which allows law enforcement agencies and family members to seek a court order to have weapons taken away from an individual viewed as potentially violent. Such laws are often opposed by supporters of Second Amendment gun rights.

The former Marine, Shane Kohfield, 32, was not charged with any crime, but surrendered five guns, including an AR-15 rifle, according to Phil Lemman, Oregon’s acting deputy state court administrator, the Washington Examiner reported.

‘I AM ANTIFA’ PROFESSOR WHO POSTED DESIRE TO HIT TRUMP WITH BAT RESIGNS FROM POST

The action was reportedly prompted by remarks Kohfield made in public during a demonstration outside the home of Portland, Ore., Mayor Ted Wheeler in August, the Oregonian/OregonLive reported.

“If Antifa gets to the point where they start killing us, I’m going to kill them next,” Kohfield told a crowd, according to the Oregonian. “I’d slaughter them, and I have a detailed plan on how I would wipe out Antifa.”

Kohfield previously wrote to U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, a former Navy SEAL, to share his concern about Antifa and voice his support for having the group declared a terrorist organization, a step that President Trump has considered.

Portland has been the site of frequent violent clashes between members of far-left Antifa and supporters of conservative groups such as Proud Boys. The mayor and other city officials have faced criticism for their handling of such events.

Based on the court order, Kohfield – who served two tours of duty in Iraq — was committed to a veterans hospital for 20 days and was barred from participating in subsequent protests in Portland.

According to the Oregonian, Kohfield conceded that he probably appeared threatening to other people, but he never intended to cause harm.

“I looked unhinged,” he told the newspaper. “I looked dangerous and have the training to be dangerous.”

The FBI would not comment about the case, the Oregonian reported. It was unclear when Kohfield’s weapons would be returned to him.

The Oregon Legislature narrowly passed the state’s red-flag law in 2017, with no Republican support in the House and backing from only one Republican in the Senate. Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat, signed the bill into law on Aug. 15 of that year and the law took effect Jan. 1, 2018.

Maryland man sentenced to 30 months in prison for role in $20M Ponzi scheme

A Maryland man was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in a Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors out of more than $20 million, the Justice Department announced this week.

Bradley Mascho, 53, pleaded guilty in June 2018 to charges of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and making a false statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He was sentenced Wednesday in Greenbelt, Md. federal court.

Prosecutors say Mascho admitted to working with investment adviser Dawn Bennett to solicit $20 million from more than 40 different investors in Bennett’s online luxury sportswear retalier, DJBennett.com, between December 2014 and April 2017. That money, authorities say, was used to pay Bennett and Mascho’s personal expenses and repay prior investors, though prosecutors noted that Mascho misappropriated the funds “to a less extent” than Bennett.

CANNABIS INVESTOR DONATES $9M TO HARVARD, MIT FOR MARIJUANA RESEARCH

“This is consistent with a Ponzi scheme — a fraudulent investment scheme in which the operator of the scheme solicits investors by promising high rates of return with little risk,” the Justice Department said. “The scheme operator then funds payments to the earlier investors through funds obtained through new investors. Typically, the operator of the scheme will use investment funds for purposes other than what was conveyed to the investors.”

The FBI began investigating Bennett in December 2015 after the SEC formally accused her of defrauding investors by inflating the amount of assets she managed and exaggerating the returns on her customers’ investments.

Prosecutors said Bennett didn’t tell investors in her luxury sportswear company that she was using their money to pay off other investors or to cover personal expenses, including more than $141,000 on astrological gems, more than $100,000 on cosmetic medical procedures and a $500,000 annual lease for a luxury suite at the Dallas Cowboys’ home stadium.

An FBI agent’s affidavit said investigators found evidence in Bennett’s home that she tried to silence SEC investigators by paying more than $800,000 for prayers by Hindu priests in India to ward off federal investigators.

Bennett, 56, was convicted of securities fraud, wire fraud and bank fraud this past October and was sentenced to 20 years in prison on July 31. She was also ordered to pay more than $14.5 million and forfeit over $14.3 million.

Federal drug agents seized aircraft and a yacht and made nearly 300 arrests after conducting drug stings across Florida this week.

“Operation Cazador” was conducted over a three-day period by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) with the assistance of local law enforcement. The DEA said the operation resulted in 290 arrests, including suspected members of a Mexican drug cartel, WJXT-TV reported Friday.

One of those arrested was Thomas Renckley, 31, who was led out of his Jacksonville home in handcuffs Thursday on suspicion of running a drug house.

Seventh illegal immigrant accused of sex crimes in Maryland county since July 25

A Honduran national in the United States illegally has been accused of raping his 15-year-old stepdaughter in suburban Maryland, the seventh such case in the area over the past five weeks.

Emilio Carrasco-Hernandez, 37, is charged with second-degree rape, sex abuse of a minor, third-degree sex offense and fourth-degree sex offense, according to WJLA.

Emilio Carrasco-Hernandez (Montgomery County Police)

The alleged victim spoke to Montgomery County police and claimed that her stepfather sexually assaulted her multiple times between Aug. 16 and Aug. 25. She alleged that she was unable to use the bathroom after one of the assaults because it was “very painful” and left her with a “stinging” feeling.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT RAPED MARYLAND GIRL, 16, AT KNIFEPOINT IN HER BEDROOM, POLICE SAY

“Victim A stated that she could not move and Emilio Carrasco-Hernandez was squishing her with his body,” detectives reportedly said of the incident. The 200-lb. Carrasco-Hernandez allegedly kissed the girl’s body and even bit her shirt in one incident.

The victim’s mother reportedly booted Carrasco-Hernandez from their Wheaton home after finding the two of them together in a bedroom. While the age of consent in Maryland is 16 years old, the mother said she believed it was a consensual act fueled by alcohol.

In a statement to WJLA, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said that Carrasco-Hernandez was previously deported in April 2017, but re-entered the United States “sometime thereafter.”

Carrasco-Hernandez could face up to 56 years in state prison in convicted on all charges. He also faces up to 20 years in federal prison for re-entering the U.S. having been previously deported, an ICE official told WJLA.

The agency reportedly placed a detainer on the Honduran national and he was put in jail without bond. He faces charges of second-degree rape, third and fourth degree sex offenses, and sex abuse of a minor.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT RAPE SUSPECT RELEASED FROM MARYLAND JAIL, VIOLATING DETAINER POLICY, ICE SAYS

Since July 25, Montgomery County Police have arrested at least seven confirmed undocumented immigrants for alleged rapes and sexual assaults. Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich signed an executive order last month designating the county a “sanctuary” jurisdiction.

The order states that no county agency – including police departments – can cooperate with ICE. Immigration agents are barred from entering secure portions of county jails, and must take custody of illegal immigrants in public areas, such as jail parking lots.

Earlier this month, another undocumented immigrant was arrested on second-degree rape and assault charges but was released days later after the Montgomery County Jail ignored ICE’s detainer request.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg made a much-anticipated appearance at the National Book Festival on Saturday, and she was not short on humor.

“As this audience can see I am alive… and I’m on my way to being very well,” she said at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., much to the audience’s delight.

Ginsburg, 86, recently completed three weeks of radiation therapy at a New York City hospital to treat a malignant tumor on her pancreas. The Supreme Court said last week there’s no evidence the disease remains.

At the National Book Festival, Ginsburg discussed her career, as well as what keeps her motivated.

“For one thing, I love my job,” she told the audience. “It’s the best and the hardest job I’ve ever had. [It] keeps me going.”

Rather than concentrate on her “aches and pains,” Ginsburg said, she concentrates “on the court’s work,” which has kept her going through four bouts with cancer.

Ginsburg even shared her marriage advice, saying she got a call from singer Jennifer Lopez to meet her and Alex Rodriguez.

Lopez asked what her secrets were to a happy marriage, Ginsburg said.

“My mother-in-law took me aside and she responded telling me it helps sometimes to be a little deaf,” she said.

Ginsburg was introduced by Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, who posted a photo earlier in the day of the thousands of people who had waited to see the Supreme Court justice.

“Just WOW! More than 4,000 people to see Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the [Liberary of Congress] #NatBookFest,” she wrote. “Some lined up at 4 a.m. Thank you!!!”

On Monday, Ginsburg received an honorary law degree from the University of Buffalo in New York. It was her first public appearance since completing cancer treatment.

Ginsburg is a leader of the Supreme Court’s liberal wing and has earned the nickname “Notorious RBG.”

Ginsburg is a Brooklyn, N.Y., native. She was appointed to the Supreme Court by then-President Bill Clinton in 1993.

The next Supreme Court term begins Oct. 7.
