Hundreds of strangers show up at veteran’s memorial service

Dale Wayne Quick got the military burial he deserved.

The Korean War veteran – whose obituary said he had “no known survivors” – had hundreds of strangers turn up for his memorial service Monday in Lincoln, Neb., after a funeral home put out a call for help. He died on June 13 at the age of 91.

“Everybody that puts on that uniform sacrifices for us,” Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, who attended himself, told KOLN. “We want to make sure that we don’t leave anybody behind.”

Born on Nov. 20, 1927, Quick “led a simple life, however, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after faithfully serving his country for nearly seven years,” the Roper and Sons Funeral Home announced.

Later on in his obituary, the funeral home said they were “appealing to any and all veterans, veterans’ clubs and organizations and our community to attend Dale’s service to honor an individual who so selflessly served our country.”

His funeral included a flag presentation as a 21-gun salute.

One of those who showed up for his funeral Monday was Barb Dethlefs, Quick’s recent caregiver.

“He became a friend, I’ve really enjoyed taking care of him,” she told KLKN. “He never talked much about his service, but he did tell me that he didn’t like me to touch his feet because he got frostbite sitting in a fox hole.”

Denise McVaugh, a great-niece of his who was also there, told KOLN it was “very heart-touching to see all the people that showed up that didn’t even know him.”

Louisiana teen accused of killing father was reportedly kidnapped by him a decade ago

A Louisiana teenager who was arrested earlier this month after allegedly fatally shooting his father was actually kidnapped by him over a decade ago, according to family members.

Anthony Templet, 17, was arrested on June 3 after he shot his father multiple times when the two got into a fight in the early-morning hours.

Templet had told police his father was drunk and woke him up around 3 a.m.; the teenager locked himself in his father’s bedroom with two handguns, according to an arrest report obtained by The Advocate.

As his father banged on the door, Templet eventually unlocked it and shot his father as he “asked Anthony to stop,” according to the report obtained by the paper.

The 17-year-old then called 911 to report what he did, and said their relationship had been “dysfunctional.”

A woman who told WAFB she was Templet’s sister said that he had actually been taken from their Texas home in 2008 by her father, Burt Templet.

“He has been secluded and abused all these years by his own father,” his sister Natasha Templet told the television station. “My brave brother had to defend himself for the last time against that evil man.”

In court records obtained by KHOU, Burt Templet was charged with assault three times between 2001 and 2002. Two of those cases, however, were dismissed by a judge. Five years later, his ex-wife filed for a protective order before the family reported Anthony as missing.

“I can only imagine what Anthony’s been through. When he was a baby, Burt would hold him in his arms while abusing my mother,” Natasha said.

Burt eventually married another woman in Baton Rouge but she reportedly left him earlier this year and filed for a protective order over alleged abuse.

The 17-year-old remains jailed at a juvenile facility in north Louisiana after being arrest on a count of manslaughter.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore III told The Advocate on Tuesday that Templet has not been formally charged in the case, and that his office will present all relevant information to a grand jury, which will determine which charges may be appropriate.

Illinois police officer shot, killed while responding to battery and disturbance call

A police officer in Illinois was shot and killed while responding to a call for help in a rural community on Tuesday, according to officials.

Illinois State Police said in a news release that 39-year-old Fulton County Sheriff’s Deputy Troy Chisum had responded to a battery and disturbance call around 2 p.m. in Avon, located about 45 miles west of Peoria.

While responding to the scene, officials said that “multiple shots were fired,” and Chisum was shot and killed.

“On behalf of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Chisum,” Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard said in a statement. “Deputy Chisum dedicated his life to the service of his community. His legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered.”

Hawaii’s “No License to Discriminate” bill is expected to become law Wednesday, which would make the state the ninth in the country to offer “Gender X” as a category on driver licenses.

Gov. David Ige, a Democrat, is expected to sign HB 1165 into law, which will allow drivers to select “X” if they prefer not to identify as either male or female on state-issued licenses, KHON-TV reported.

The measure also protects a person from having to provide documentation, such as a birth certificate, to prove their gender before choosing “Gender X,” according to Hawaii News Now.

The legislation is being championed by members and supporters of the LGBT community for helping to reduce discrimination against transgender and gender fluid individuals.

“This measure returns us closer to the inclusive society of Native Hawaiians, which celebrated expressions of gender beyond masculinity and femininity,” Khara Jabola-Carolus, Executive Director of the Hawai’i State Commission on the Status of Women, told Hawaii News Now.

NRA pulls the plug on NRA-TV, ending business relationship with ad firm: report

Westlake Legal Group TexasNRA NRA pulls the plug on NRA-TV, ending business relationship with ad firm: report fox-news/us/personal-freedoms/second-amendment fox news fnc/us fnc Danielle Wallace article 3d9d4a4e-3c78-5f3d-a1a6-3b0b7a7e2d64

The National Rifle Association decided Tuesday to shut down production at NRA-TV, thus ending the increasingly contentious business relationship with its long-time advertising firm Ackerman-McQueen, the New York Times first reported.

The N.R.A. will no longer conduct business with Ackerman McQueen, which had been in charge of operating the gun rights group’s live-broadcasting arm, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The Times.

NRA PRESIDENT SAYS HE WON’T SERVE SECOND TERM AMID TURMOIL IN GUN RIGHTS GROUP

NRA-TV may choose to continue to air previous content but will reportedly no longer conduct live broadcasts. It also has severed ties with its on-air talent, who were employees of Ackerman McQueen. It is unclear whether the N.R.A. will look to hire some of the on-air personalities in the future.

“Many members expressed concern about the messaging on NRATV becoming too far removed from our core mission: defending the Second Amendment,” Wayne LaPierre, the N.R.A.’s longtime chief executive, wrote in a message to members that was expected to be sent out by Wednesday. “So, after careful consideration, I am announcing that starting today, we are undergoing a significant change in our communications strategy. We are no longer airing ‘live TV’ programming.”

In its own message to the Times, Ackerman McQueen said it is “not surprised that the N.R.A. is unwilling to honor its agreement to end our contract and our long-standing relationship in an orderly and amicable manner.”

Ackerman McQueen accused NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre of charging the ad agency $240K in travel expenses to Italy, Hungary, the Bahamas and other destinations in a letter written to the NRA’s board earlier this year. The NRA then retaliated by suing Ackerman McQueen for failing to share billing records with the NRA and for not disclosing the nature of the contract between the ad agency and the then-NRA president Oliver North, The Hill reported.

A New Jersey mom was attacked and knocked unconscious last week by a 13-year-old who a day earlier was among students who told her son to “go back to Mexico,” her attorney said Tuesday.

Beronica Ruiz, 35, was attacked last Wednesday in Passaic – about 10 miles north of Newark – while pushing her 1-year-old baby in a stroller, and walking beside her 12-year-old son, her attorney, Daniel Santiago, said. Ruiz was hospitalized for two days with a fractured eye socket, bruises, and a bloodied eye.

The alleged attacker, a 13-year-old boy, was among a group of students who taunted Ruiz’s son in the school cafeteria the day prior saying: “Mexicans should go back behind the wall,” Santiago said. Ruiz’s son countered: “We all come from immigrants,” and the three students threatened him with violence, Santiago added.

The boy reported the threat to school officials who kept him in the office for his protection, nj.com reported. The school reportedly did not contact the boy’s parents. He went home and told his parents what had happened, the report said.

Ruiz went to school officials the next day to ask why she was not contacted, Santiago said. The vice principal apologized for not contacting her and said the situation was under control, WPIX reported.

Passaic Mayor Hector Hector C. Lora told WPIX that the alleged attacker has been arrested and charged as a juvenile with aggravated assault and simple assault. He was released to his parents ahead of a Family court appearance, nj.com reported.

Santiago said he plans to open a lawsuit against the school on behalf of Ruiz’s family. An investigation is ongoing.
