Arizona driver caught in HOV lane with skeleton riding shotgun

Arizona state troopers patrolling a highway HOV lane weren’t fooled when they came across a vehicle occupied by a driver and a partially-clothed skeleton.

The 62-year-old driver was pulled over Thursday on State Route 101 in Phoenix and issued a $400 ticket for illegal use of an HOV lane to bypass traffic.

“The motor unit that pulled up next to the vehicle looked inside the vehicle and at that point pretty much realized that the passenger in the front row was actually a skeleton,” Trooper Martin Sotelo told Fox 10 Phoenix.

“Think you can use the HOV lane with Skeletor riding shotgun? You’re dead wrong!” the tongue-in-cheek tweet read.

“Just know that if you’re caught, you will be cited,” Sotelo said. “Points are going to be added to your license. It’s just not worth it.”

Mexican woman who ran people-smuggling ring gets 10 years in jail

A Mexican woman who was the reported leader of a human-smuggling ring was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison, authorities said.

Brenda Yadira Gamez-Castaneda, 41, known as “Guera La Trailera,” was handed the sentence in a South Texas courtroom for her role in conspiring to transport undocumented immigrants into the United States, the Justice Department said.

She also received a 24-month sentence for illegally re-entering the U.S. after having been deported. It will run concurrently with the 10-year bid. U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez noted that Castaneda destroyed evidence and demanded others to do the same and instructed a co-defendant what to tell investigators.

Federal prosecutors said she was responsible for the smuggling of at least 25 undocumented immigrants. At least one was involuntarily detained and another was held by coercion or threat in connection with demands for payment. She also used a 10-year-old child to help her at a hotel where the immigrants were being kept.

A federal indictment said she was part of a criminal enterprise that involved at least five or more people and included at least two alien smuggling cells.

Two men, Adolfo Medina-Cervantez and Roberto Flores-Brewster, used a property in Donna, Texas, owned by Flores-Brewster — known as the “the Brewster Compound” — to harbor undocumented immigrants, authorities said.

The immigrants would then be handed over to Castaneda, who transported them with another defendant, Silber Vazquez-Mireles, to various hotels snd stash houses where they would stay until arrangements were made to smuggle them past Border Patrol checkpoints.

In October, Vazquez-Mireles, 32, was sentenced to more than three years in prison. Flores-Brewster, 60, and Medina-Cervantez, 29, are scheduled to be sentenced in March.

Michigan bank calls police on black customer trying to deposit settlement check from a racial discrimination lawsuit

A black Air Force veteran is accusing a Detroit-area bank of refusing to deposit money he was awarded in a racial discrimination lawsuit against his employer and calling the police because of his race.

Sauntore Thomas, 44, said he went to the TCF Bank in Livonia, Michigan, to deposit $99,000, when bank employees said they were having issues verifying his checks, Fox News affiliate WJBK-TV reported. Thomas received the money as the result of a lawsuit against his employer, Enterprise Leasing Company of Detroit, who he accused of racial bias.

“This was not a mistake, this was the bank assuming, making their own assumptions of what it is, and what it’s not,” Thomas said Thursday.

The checks didn’t appear to be legitimate when bank staff scanned them, TCF spokesman Tom Wennerberg said. He noted that Thomas has a 52-cent account balance at the time and had no recent back activity.

Thomas’ attorney, Deborah Gordon, said the checks “couldn’t have been more solid.”

“I mean, it’s a ridiculous joke that some nationwide company is going to be handing out fraudulent checks to me, that I’m going them pass on to my client,” she said. “So obviously, they didn’t believe my client. It’s obvious.”

Wennerberg said bank employees should have accepted the checks and told Thomas there could be a hold on the funds until they could be validated.

Four police officers responded to the incident but took no action against Thomas.

“I didn’t start cussing and hollering. I didn’t say anything,” he said. “I was very composed, even though it was a very stressful situation to be in, especially in today’s racial times,” Thomas said. “With being African-American, sometimes you don’t have to do nothing to be in trouble. And that’s what I felt like.”

“We apologize for the experience Mr. Thomas had at our banking center, the statement read. “Local police should not have been involved. We strongly condemn racism and discrimination of any kind. We take extra precautions involving large deposits and requests for cash and in this case, we were unable to validate the checks presented by Mr. Thomas and regret we could not meet his needs.”

Thomas took the checks to a Chase Bank branch and opened a new account, he said.

Federal authorities recover copy of stolen Christopher Columbus letter missing for 35 years

Federal agents have recovered a centuries-old copy of a letter penned by Christopher Columbus to Spain’s King Ferdinand after the famed explorer arrived in the Americas.

The letter is one a few dozen copies of a letter written in Spanish by Columbus in 1493, the Justice Department said.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware and Homeland Security investigators, who specialize in the recovery of stolen rare books and historic artifacts, announced the find Wednesday. The letter is valued at $1.3 million and had been missing for more than 40 years since it was stolen from a library in Venice, Italy.

Federal authorities announced the finding of a copy of a letter written by Christopher Columbus in 1493 detailing his discoveries in the Americas.  (Department of Justice )

It was the fourth such return of a copy after authorities were tipped off by a rare books expert who determined that several authentic copies of the Columbus letter had been stolen from libraries across Europe without library officials’ knowledge. Unlike other stolen copies of the letter, the newest one was not replaced with a forgery.

The letter, titled “Columbus Letter Plannck I,” details Columbus’ discoveries in the Americas. It was printed by Roman printer Stephanus Plannck. Plannck also printed another edition of the letter for both Ferdinand and Queen Isabella and published it to spread the news of his discoveries.

Investigators said the newest find is the most rare of the four copies. It was found in the hands of an unidentified private collector and ordered returned to the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice, authorities said.

American and Italian authorities determined the collector was “acting in good faith” when he bought the letter from a book dealer in the U.S. in 2003. The letter hadn’t been reported stolen at the time of the purchase.

Investigators said they have recovered a letter dating back to 1493 written by Christopher Columbus. The letter had been stolen from a library in Italy.  (Department of Justice )

The Venetian library acquired a copy of Plannck’s first edition around 1875, and investigators think it was stolen from the library more than 100 years later, in the 1980s, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Rare book expert Paul Needham was asked to examine it before it was reported stolen, about 15 years ago, The News-Journal in Delaware reported.

He contacted the Justice Department after he grew suspicious of the letter after attending a conference in Venice in 2018 and thinking it could belong to a library there, according to the paper.

What does ‘pro-life’ mean?

The term “pro-life,” short for “right to life,” was adopted in the U.S. after the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision, Roe v. Wade, legalized abortion in all 50 states.

Advocates generally prefer to be identified as “pro-life,” as opposed to “anti-abortion,” to highlight their belief that abortion is the taking of human life. They believe life starts at the moment of conception and ends with natural death, while opponents, who identify as pro-choice, characterize them as restricting women’s reproductive rights.

What began largely as a Catholic movement peaks every year on the anniversary of Roe with the March for Life, which some years gathers as many as half-million attendees. It is largely attended by young people and women, according to organizers.

MARCH FOR LIFE: A LOOK AT THE LARGEST PRO-LIFE RALLY IN THE US

The march has expanded to other faiths and denominations that emphasize the right to life as God-given and also point to the secular science behind the movement.

The anti-abortion movement is aligned largely with the Republican Party. Four openly pro-life presidents – Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Donald Trump – have been elected since Roe.

In the last few years, politicians have pushed anti-abortion laws at state and local levels with success, but also many legal challenges.

At least one person and two firefighters were reportedly hurt Thursday evening in a fire that damaged a historic building in New York City’s Chinatown just before the Lunar New Year, potentially taking archival material from the Museum of Chinese in America with it.

The building, at 70 Mulberry Street, was constructed in 1900 and serves as a senior center and houses several nonprofits, FOX 5 in New York reported.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called the building a “pillar” to the Chinatown community.

“I know the neighborhood is in shock tonight. We’re going to help the community get through this,” De Blasio tweeted.

Nearly 150 firefighters worked for hours to put out the blaze that mainly affected the fourth and fifth floors of the building, according to FOX 5.

“This building is very important. It’s so unfortunate to have a fire. It’s very sad,” Chen Dance Center owner HT Chen told New York’s WNBC-TV. He said his business has been in the building for more than 40 years.

Manhattan community board member Karlin Chan told WNBC the Museum of Chinese in America’s archives are housed there.

“So all the historical documents from this area, all the exhibits are actually stored in there, so hopefully the water damage doesn’t destroy it,” she said.
