Terrapin turtle trafficker gets 6 months in prison — and he’ll have to shell out $250G

A Pennsylvania man was sentenced this week to six months in prison — and he’ll have to shell out $250,000 — for illegally trafficking thousands of threatened diamondback terrapin turtles, prosecutors said.

David Sommers, 64, of Levittown, poached the protected turtles and their eggs from New Jersey marshes, sold them online and illegally shipped them over the course of nearly six years, from November 2011 until October 2017, the Justice Department said Thursday.

A grand jury indicted him on July 10, 2018. On Feb. 4 he pleaded guilty to falsely labeling packages containing the protected critters.

“The defendant had a simple business plan: Poach protected turtles and their eggs from their natural habitat, advertise them for sale online and then illegally ship them to customers by concealing the actual contents of the packages,” U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain said. “Sommers represented himself as a legitimate reptile breeder when he was, in fact, endangering the lives of these animals and breaking the law.”

Diamondback terrapin turtles are native to the eastern and western U.S. and are known for their diamond-shaped shell markings. While coveted, their population is shrinking, and New Jersey banned the collection, transportation and possession of diamondback terrapins in 2016.

The turtles are protected by New Jersey state law, as well as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which listed the species as threatened in 2013.

“Sommers used a sham business to shamelessly mask an illegal trade in threatened and protected species,” Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Bossert Clark said. “The Justice Department and our law enforcement partners will safeguard our nation’s natural resources and biodiversity and prosecute wildlife traffickers to the fullest extent of the law.”

Pennsylvania woman, 19, wanted in stabbings of 2 sisters turns herself in, faces murder charge: police

The Pennsylvania woman accused of stabbing two sisters, killing one and critically wounding the other, turned herself in and has been charged with murder, the Philadelphia Police Department announced Thursday.

The department told Fox News that Tiana Thomas, 19, who was wanted in connection with the Aug. 19 attack, surrendered herself to Philadelphia homicide detectives Friday evening.

Investigators said Thomas stabbed 23-year old Shawntae Garrison multiple times in the chest, back and legs during a clash investigators believe started as a neighborhood dispute.

Video of a 2005 police raid of Jeffrey Epstein’s Palm Beach, Fla., mansion reveals a home partially decorated with illicit photos and imagery of young women.

Inside the home, the video shows a wall covered in artsy nude photos of men and women, a painting of a nude woman lying on her back and a photo of a naked woman – reportedly Epstein’s ex-girlfriend and alleged madam, Ghislaine Maxwell – lying on a sandy beach.

Entering the master bedroom, police discovered a drawing of a bare female backside and a painting of a naked woman, as well as what appeared to be either a sketch or embellished photo of Maxwell.

Other photos in the home apparently showed Epstein standing at the podium of the White House press room.

Police also discovered a green massage table leaning against a wall under framed photos of Epstein, who was accused of molesting dozens of underage girls at the mansion.

By 2006, Palm Beach investigators had interviewed more than 30 young women – some of whom were minors at the time of the alleged molestations.

EPSTEIN ACCUSERS SPEAK OUT IN COURT AS DEFENSE TEAM URGES PROBE OF DEATH

In the end, prosecutors and Epstein’s lawyers negotiated a then-secret plea deal which led Epstein to serve just 13 months in jail under work-release privileges, allowing him to work in his office six days a week.

He pleaded guilty to a child prostitution charge and registered as a sex offender.

The FBI has raided Epstein’s other properties, including his New York City mansion and his private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Prosecutors confirmed Tuesday that inquiries into Epstein’s co-conspirators were ongoing and would continue despite the fact that the criminal case against Epstein has been dismissed due to Epstein’s suicide in his jail cell earlier this month.

Fox News’ Tamara Gitt contributed to this report.

Uber driver bitten in Georgia attack that left car damaged, woman arrested

A Georgia woman was arrested after police say she was caught on camera attacking an Uber driver — by biting him and trying to damage his car.

Tasheena Campbell, 26, was taken into custody Aug. 20 — days after the incident in which she allegedly attacked driver Yasser Hadi in midtown Atlanta on Aug. 18.

UBER REMOVES DRIVER AFTER HE USED WOMAN’S ACCOUNT TO GIVE HIMSELF 5-STAR RATING, $100 TIP

A video uploaded to Twitter of the attacks begins with a woman — identified by WAGA as Campbell — sitting on the hood of a car, breaking off a windshield wiper. Bystanders and Hadi encourage her to stop, before the woman throws a punch at Hadi.

The woman hops off the car and enters the vehicle through the driver-side door while Hadi tries to stop her. “Get out my car!” he shouts, as he pulls the woman out to the ground. The woman tries punching the Uber driver — before biting him, prompting him to scream.

It’s unclear what sparked the altercation. Hadi said Campbell appeared out of nowhere and randomly attacked him.

“She’s acting weird, she’s acting wild, and she’s on the car hitting it, telling me I need to die, to kill me,” Hadi told WAGA of the encounter. “The pain, I said, “God, just let her take my flesh, I don’t care. I want her to go away from me.”

The Uber driver said the situation is “horrible.”

“She’s hit me in my job, my health and my financial pocket money, it’s hard,” said Hadi, noting he doesn’t have insurance. “I’m in a bad situation. I wish people see this and help.”

Campbell was arrested and charged with battery and criminal trespass, according to online records from the Fulton County Jail. She was still in custody as of Thursday.

Kentucky mother Andrea Knabel, a volunteer who searches for missing people, reported missing

A Kentucky mother-of-two who searches for missing people has now seemingly disappeared herself.

Andrea Knabel, 37, was last seen leaving a relative’s home in the Audubon Park neighborhood of Louisville around 1 a.m. on Aug. 13, according to Missing in America, the organization for which she volunteers.

Around 1:30 a.m., she used her cellphone to call her friend and ask for a ride, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported. Several security cameras are located in the neighborhood, but many weren’t active when she was in the area.

A friend of Knabel’s told WAVE the single mother “was upset and she needed a ride” — and was too trusting of other people.

“Obviously she was trying to get ahold of people, maybe she got in the car with the wrong person,” said Maricia Kidd, who has known Knabel for 30 years. She noted Knabel’s car was recently totaled in a hit-and-run accident and said she’d been laid off at work.

“Here she is helping to locate people and she comes up missing herself,” said Tracy Leonard, a private investigator and friend of Knabel. “She’s just a super great girl. She helped me locate a missing teen about a year and a half ago.”

The group’s founder, Nancy Schaefer Smith, said that Knabel, a “dedicated member” of Missing in America, is the first volunteer ever to disappear like this.

“She is loved by so many people,” Smith told the Courier-Journal. “It’s all hands on deck. She’s my girl…We’re going to find her.”

An illegal immigrant arrested in Florida on a sexual battery charge has been deported to Guatemala, according to authorities.

But the woman who claims she was his victim says she would have preferred that he be held in Florida and prosecuted.

“I was in shock. He’s still free,” the woman told the Miami Herald. “He didn’t get in trouble for anything. It didn’t make me feel better. It made me feel worse.”

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT RAPED MARYLAND GIRL, 16, AT KNIFEPOINT IN HER BEDROOM, POLICE SAY

The woman asked that her name not be published because she was involved in a sex-crime case.

Michael Meade, a field operations director for enforcement and removal operations for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said it was against ICE policy to discuss details of the specific case. But he said ICE tries to work with prosecutors to find the best solution for when to deport a detainee versus when to hold that person for trial.

“It’s a risk assessment we do on every case, especially on a case in which someone has been arrested on a serious, violent crime,” Meade told the Herald. “It’s a balancing act. We are very cognizant of victims’ rights.”

ICE says more than 1,300 people were deported last year from Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands even though they had “pending criminal cases,” according to the Herald.

One advantage of deportation, however, is the savings for taxpayers, said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies.

Coast Guard nets 3 arrests, 3,000 pounds of cocaine in anti-smuggling operation in Pacific

Newly released video shows U.S. Coast Guard personnel busting up an alleged drug-smuggling operation in international waters of the Pacific Ocean last month.

The operation resulted in the seizure of an estimated 3,000 pounds of cocaine and the arrests of three suspects, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

The footage was recorded July 16 as a team aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Robert Ward pursued the suspects’ vessel.

As the Coast Guard crew pulls up alongside the boat, crew members draw guns on the suspects and order them to put their hands up, the video shows.

The Coast Guard crew represented District 11, which covers California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.

Previously, the Coast Guard announced the seizure of some $350 million in cocaine, representing some 26,000 pounds of the drug, following a weeks-long operation.
