DNA links Michigan man to 2 unsolved 1998 Florida rapes, investigators say

Authorities in Florida have used genealogy DNA results to connect a Michigan man to two sexual assault cases from more than two decades ago.

Robert Brian Thomas, 61, was arrested last week and jailed in Michigan, where he awaits extradition to Florida, police said during a Monday press conference.

Investigators extracted DNA evidence from the scene of a sexual assault in Venice, Fla., in January 1998. A man had broken into a female’s apartment before dawn, threatened her with a knife, tied her up, and then raped her, Tampa Bay’s FOX 13 reported.

Investigators linked DNA from that incident to another rape later that year in Indian Rocks Beach, about 80 miles north of Venice, according to the station. In the second incident, a man had chased down a 20-year-old woman and forced her to perform oral sex.

More than 20 years later, DNA from the assaults was submitted to the state’s Department of Law Enforcement’s Genetic Genealogy Unit, which matches DNA to public databases, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported.

FLORIDA TRUCKER ARRESTED IN COLORADO COLD CASE MURDER OF WOMAN, 21, NEARLY 20 YEARS AGO

Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said investigators found distant relatives of the suspect through gedmatch.com, a third-party website that allows users of ancestery.com and 23andMe to share their DNA profiles with law enforcement if they choose.

Investigators used that website to identify Thomas as the suspect in the 1998 assaults. At the time, Thomas had been living in the Tampa Bay area but now lives in Michigan.

Venice detectives flew to Niles, Michigan, earlier this month where they obtained Thomas’ discarded cigarette butts, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported. A lab analysis matched DNA from the cigarette to the 1998 sexual assaults, the report said.

Thomas could have faced a litany of charges from the assaults, but because of the statute of limitations, only faces a charge of sexual battery with a deadly weapon, according to the Herald-Tribune.

Jersey City shooting: FBI search pawnshop connected to man whose phone number was in shooter’s pocket

FBI agents in New Jersey on Monday were searching a second pawnshop in connection with man whose number was found in the pocket of one of the shooters responsible for last week’s deadly shooting at a Jewish market in Jersey City.

During a search of Ahmed A-Hady’s home and a pawnshop in Keyport, N.J., on Saturday, federal agents found three AR-15-style assault rifles, three handguns and one shotgun as well as more than 400 rounds of ammunition.

A-Hady hasn’t been charged with providing any of the weapons used in the massacre that left four people and the two attackers dead on Dec. 10, but he has been charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon.

He was denied bail in U.S. District Court in Newark Monday afternoon.

Records cited by The Associated Press indicate that A-Hady bought two handguns in 2007 before being convicted of a felony in 2012 that made him ineligible to own firearms. Authorities say he acknowledged still owning the handguns.

FBI agents were searching a second pawnshop in South Amboy on Monday, though it was not clear if it was the shop that Hady said was his son’s.

Hady’s number was found in the pants pocket of David Anderson, 47, one of the two Jersey City attackers. Anderson and Francine Graham, 50, killed Jersey City Police Det. Joseph Seals in a cemetery last week before storming a Jewish supermarket, leaving three people dead before they were fatally shot by police.

The attack is being investigated as domestic terrorism.

Anderson and Graham were armed with multiple weapons including an AR-15-style rifle and a shotgun. A pipe bomb was also found in the stolen U-Haul van they had been driving. Two of the weapons they used were bought by Graham in Ohio last year, police have said.

A trail of reported tornados broke out across Louisiana and Mississippi Monday afternoon, damaging homes and churches and killing at least one person, local officials say.

Forecasters said radar showed possible twisters as the “widespread” weather system charged across the region. The Storm Prediction Center reported trees were broken or toppled in parts of Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Vernon Parish Chief Deputy Calvin Turner has confirmed at least one death after what appeared to be a large tornado left a path of destruction.

“We’ve got damage at lots of places. We’ve got a church where the fellowship hall is torn all to pieces. Some homes are hit. Right now we’re having trouble just getting to places because of tress that are down,” said Turner.

Damage also was reported about 25 miles away in DeRidder.

Entergy Mississippi, an electric utility company, reported more than 2,000 power outages in the state, concentrated mostly west of Jackson along the path of a storm where a tornado was spotted.

Forecasters said an area of northeastern Louisiana and southwestern Mississippi – where about 1 million people live – had a moderate chance of dangerous weather. A tornado watch was issued from east Texas through Louisiana into central Mississippi and southern Arkansas.

A lesser threat, meanwhile, extended into Alabama, western Georgia, the western Florida Panhandle and Tennessee as storms moved eastward, according to forecasters.

Students throughout Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi were dismissed early, while schools canceled afternoon events and activities as a precaution because of the weather threat.

Forecasters said tornadoes, hail and winds blowing at 70 mph posed the greatest threat as a cold front moved across the region in an easterly direction. Storms that are predicted to begin in the west could last until early Tuesday in the region’s east, forecasters said.

Idaho man sent harassing postcards for years, sentenced to 51-month prison term: report

A 76-year-old Boise man was sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for what Idaho prosecutors are labeling a “crusade of harassment” related to a barrage of postcards sent to a homeowner after a minor confrontation in a post office parking lot, a report said.

Frank Abbott Sweeney was sentenced Dec. 13 after pleading guilty to six counts of stalking, the Idaho Statesman reported.

Sweeney was indicted in March for his use of the U.S. Postal Service to harass strangers, the report said.

CALIFORNIA, NYC ALLEGE IN LAWSUIT POSTAL SERVICE TURNS BLIND EYE TO SMUGGLED CIGARETTES

The harassment began after a brief interaction Sweeney had with a woman in the parking lot when the woman confronted him about parking in a handicapped parking space without a tag on his vehicle, Deputy U.S. Attorney Kassandra McGrady said.

Following the incident, Sweeney hired a private investigator to find where the woman lived, as well as her personal information and her family member’s names before sending a barrage of harassing postcards to her home, the Statesman reported.

The postcards included harassing language, as well as references to Adolf Hitler, racial slurs, sexually charged language and personal insults, according to McGrady. Sweeney allegedly signed the postcards as “Carson Wells,” the name of the character who is a hitman in the movie “No Country for Old Men.”

He also postcards to the victim’s neighbors claiming the woman was a sex offender and pedophile, which were not true, the report said.

NEW U.S. POSTAL SERVICE TRUCK CONTRACT WORTH $6.3 BILLION MAY BE AWARDED IN 2020

McGrady argued Sweeney avoided being caught by authorities by wiping his fingerprints from the postcards, buying the postcards with cash and mailing them from different locations around Boise and Garden City.

Sweeney’s defense attorney Elisa Massoth argued her client has a serious history of mental illness, including schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder, the newspaper reported. He was also the victim of several attacks when he was previously jailed, including one that left a large scar on his face.

Massoth said when Sweeney was arrested, he cooperated with police and admitted to the allegations. He pleaded guilty to all six charges because he did not want to put the victims through a trial, she said.

The defense countered Sweeney’s mental illness has been a problem since he was as young as 7, but is not compounded by any drug or alcohol addictions, the newspaper reported.

Massoth argued for a lesser sentence, noting since her client is already 76, a 51-month sentence could essentially be a life sentence.

Sweeney himself said his intent in sending the postcards was not to threaten the victims. When asked whether he wanted to speak prior to sentencing, Sweeney told the judge, “My intent in sending the postcards was only to embarrass and humiliate the victim, never to frighten.”

Sweeney has a lengthy criminal history with six prior felony convictions, three of which were federal crimes, according to the prosecution. Prior convictions include attempted homicide, robbery and weapons charges. In the 1990s, Sweeney was convicted for shooting a police officer in New Jersey with a machine gun, the Statesman reported.

He has convictions for harassment through the U.S. Postal Service and harassing his neighbor in a similar way. When Sweeney is released from prison, he will be required to serve three years of supervised release.

House Judiciary Committee calls for Trump’s removal in 658-page impeachment report;

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know as you start your Monday …

House Judiciary Committee releases impeachment report; Senate Dems send witness wish list for impeachment trial
Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, wrote that President Trump is a threat to the Constitution and should be removed from office, according to the committee’s 658-page report on the articles of impeachment resolution against Trump that was submitted early Monday.

The majority wrote that President Trump abused his office by soliciting the interference of Ukraine in the 2020 election and then obstructed the impeachment inquiry into his conduct. The report was released at 12:30 a.m. ET., and included a dissent from the committee’s minority that called the case for impeachment “not only weak but dangerously lowers the bar for future impeachments.” Trump and the White House repeatedly have denied he did anything wrong.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Sunday sent Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., a letter outlining the parameters for a weeks-long Senate impeachment trial, including the proposal that former National Security Adviser John Bolton and acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney be subpoenaed to testify.

Bolton and Mulvaney were among four new witnesses whose testimonies Democrats were seeking for the impeachment trial over President Trump’s actions toward Ukraine. In addition to Bolton and Mulvaney, Schumer said Democrats also wanted testimony from two other White House officials: Robert Blair, a top Mulvaney aide, and Michael Duffey, a budget official who was tasked with handling the Ukraine issue.

In the letter, Schumer proposed the structure for a “fair and honest” trial, in an attempt to launch negotiations ahead of House voting this week. The full Democrat-controlled House is widely expected to vote for an impeachment trial.

Under Schumer’s proposal, a trial would begin Jan. 7, with the swearing-in of Chief Justice John Roberts to oversee the proceedings and stretching for several weeks as Democrats subpoena witnesses and testimony. McConnell has signaled his preference for a speedy trial but also told Fox News’ Sean Hannity last week that there was “zero chance” Trump would be removed from office.

Anti-impeachment Democrat Van Drew’s planned jump to GOP panned as reaction to poor poll numbers
Nadler brushed off reports that Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey plans to leave the Democratic Party to become a Republican.

“What he’s reacting to is public polling that shows he can’t get renominated,” Nadler said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.” “His electorate in his district is 24 percent to renominate him and 60 percent to nominate somebody else.”

Van Drew — who has spent months criticizing fellow Democrats for their push to impeach Trump — met with Trump on Friday to discuss going across party lines. He is one of only two Democrats who voted against opening an impeachment inquiry into Trump and has remained a fervent voice in opposition to impeaching the president.

The news of Van Drew’s possible party flip drew harsh criticism from Democrats, who called it a political move aimed at turning around his lagging approval numbers in New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District. Click here for more.

Boeing considers halting or cutting back 737 MAX production: Report
Boeing may cut back or even stop further production of its 737 MAX jets as the airplanes’ future remains uncertain, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

People familiar with the matter told the Journal that Boeing management is increasingly seeing a production pause as the best option, according to the report. But cutting production would increase Boeing’s cost per plane, and could even potentially bring about job cuts and furloughs that would affect the industry beyond Boeing. Click here for more.

A North Carolina sheriff’s deputy was placed on administrative leave after surveillance video surfaced that allegedly showed him body-slamming a middle school student before the student was dragged out of the camera’s purview, a report said.

Curtis Brame, the Vance County sheriff, told North Carolina ABC affiliate WTVD that he was stunned by the video. He said he asked the state’s Bureau of Investigation to probe the incident, which occurred at Vance County Middle School.

The student seen in the video is younger than 12 years old, the report said.

Thieves fleeing police in one of two Infiniti sedans involved in a marijuana shop robbery early Saturday morning in downtown Santa Rosa, Calif., hemorrhaged the stolen drug after hitting a responding patrol car, a report said.

The incident occurred at about 3:36 a.m. Police were responding to the burglar alarm and chased the damaged car throughout the city, a police report said.

As pursuit reached speeds in excess of 100 mph and police called off the chase due to safety concerns, The Modesto Bee reported. All six suspected thieves escaped and remain at large, police said.

Police believe the group may have burglarized other San Francisco Bay Area marijuana shops and described the getaway vehicles as a white newer model Infinity sedan as well as a dark-colored newer model Infiniti sedan, the Bee reported.

When officers responded to the alarm in the 900 block of Piner Place, they found the six suspects – all described as men in their mid-20s – dashing to sedans loaded with stolen marijuana, police reported.

One man drove over a sidewalk and crashed into a police vehicle, blocking the officer’s path while damaging the sedan and causing the packages of stolen pot to fall out as he fled, according to police.

NY prison inmate’s suicide raises questions about solitary confinement

Advocates are warning of the dangers of solitary confinement for inmates with mental-health issues after a review of an inmate’s suicide at a New York prison suggests it could have been prevented.

Cachin Anderson, 33, should have been under closer scrutiny and had access to “one to one constant watch” by mental health staff at the prison while he was in solitary confinement during the last two months of his life, a review by the Commission of Corrections revealed, according to reports by The Associated Press.

Anderson was serving a 10-year sentence for his involvement in an assault on a parking attendant and was placed in solitary confinement after he, on numerous occasions, assaulted multiple corrections officers, including punching one in the face, urinating on another and throwing a can at a third.

In one instance, he climbed on a sink and dove headfirst at the floor, saying he “wanted to end it and go home.”

He killed himself in his cell on June 28, 2017.

“Had appropriate safety measures been taken, given Anderson’s recent suicidal threats and behavioral changes, his suicide may have been preventable,” the commission wrote in its report, obtained by The Associated Press through the Correctional Association of New York.

Anderson’s uncle, Larry Evans, a retired corrections officer in Connecticut, said his nephew should have been under closer supervision.

“If they knew that something was going on with him, he’s supposed to (be) in the unit where he’s supposed to be watched — period,” Evans said.

New York state prison inmates in solitary confinement or long-term “keeplock” units, in which inmates are isolated, were over five times more likely to kill themselves than prisoners in general confinement, according to a report from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

The report said that of the 130 inmate suicides from 2004 to 2013 in New York prisons, 30 were by prisoners in solitary or isolated housing or a special treatment program.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D-N.Y., in an effort to regulate solitary confinement assignments, has introduced plans to limit isolation to 30 days.

Additionally, efforts to prevent suicide have included regulations requiring prison guards to make rounds every 30 minutes sporadically while watching over solitary confinement units.

Each prisoner is also supposed to undergo a suicide prevention screening and a mental health assessment when entering solitary confinement. During the screening process, prisoners found to be at an imminent suicide risk would be put in the Residential Crisis Treatment Program, a separate unit inside the prison where correction officers would make their rounds every 15 minutes and each inmate would be monitored under video, according to the Office of Mental Health.

The correctional officers’ union has opposed restrictions on solitary confinement, with Michael Powers, the president of the New York State Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association, advocating that confinement units separate “dangerous” people from the general population “and only when they commit serious infractions.”

He said in a statement, “Those residing in special housing units are afforded most, if not all, of the same comforts as those in general population.”

Police are searching for a Texas mom and her 2-week-old daughter who vanished this past Thursday, as the baby’s father pleaded for their safe return.

Heidi Broussard and her daughter, Margot Carey, vanished from their home near West William Cannon and South First Street in Austin after Broussard dropped her son off at Cowan Elementary School in the morning, police said in a news release.

Investigators said they believed the pair returned home. Shane Carey, the baby’s father and Broussard’s fiancé, told KVUE her vehicle and belongings were still at the home and there were no signs of a struggle.

Friends of Broussard told Fox News she’s a “great mom” but police had no leads or suspects so far.

Shane told news outlets he received a phone call from his son’s school when Broussard didn’t return to pick him up at the end of the day.

“She is an amazing person,” Shane Carey said. “She has amazing support, friends behind her. She’s so personable – one of the best people I’ve ever met, so kind, and she does anything for her kids – one of the best moms.”

He continued, “If you see an awesome mom with a baby walking around or in a suspicious van or car or anything, please, just somebody call.”

The couple, who have been together for nearly 10 years, were also raising Carey’s older child from a previous marriage.

Broussard, 33, was last seen wearing a purple long sleeve top, according to a photo released by the Austin Police Department, taken around 7:50 a.m. as she was leaving the school.
