Former neighbors describe young Epstein as ‘nerdy,’ quiet with no signs of predatory behavior

The formative years of disgraced multi-millionaire Jeffrey Epstein apparently were vastly different from his time as a jet-setting financial titan accused of sexually abusing scores of underage women.

Epstein, who currently faces multiple charges of sex trafficking, was born and raised in Brooklyn and lived what seemed to be a normal, middle-class life – a far cry from his years of opulence and excess during adulthood.

Epstein was born on January 20, 1953 in Brooklyn and was the first child of Seymour G. Epstein, a groundskeeper for the New York City Department of Parks, and his wife Pauline, a school aide. He was the older of two siblings.

Epstein and his brother, Mark, were raised in the gated community of Sea Gate, a private enclave located on the western end of Coney Island.

Like many others in the neighborhood, Epstein’s upbringing was that of a solid, middle-class family. The family lived in a modest apartment in a three-family home located on Maple Avenue. Neighbors described the Epstein family as modest folk.

“They were so gentle, the most gentle people,” a former neighbor told The Daily Beast. “Simple. The most simple people in the world.”

The neighbor also described how they were amazed by young Jeffrey’s exceptional abilities in mathematics.

“From simple to genius,” they told the website, adding that he was a quiet child.

“He was a little nerdy boy.”

Others described young Epstein as a typical, happy-go-lucky kid who started showing exceptional talent at an early age.

“Jeffrey’s a brilliant and good person,” childhood friend Gary Grossberg said in an interview for the biography “Filthy Rich,” written by novelist James Patterson. “He was a diamond in the rough, you see. People recognized Jeffrey’s brilliance early on.”

Others recalled how “advanced” he was.

“He tutored my girlfriend and me in the summer. He taught me geometry in just two months,” Beverly Donatelli said in her interview for the book. She was in school with Epstein at Lafayette High School in nearby Gravesend. She is two years older but was in the same class as Epstein because he had skipped two grades.

Donatelli said in her interview that she remembered Epstein as “a kindhearted boy” and something of a prodigy who was a gifted piano player and math whiz.

“I was talking to my girlfriends the other day,” she said. “There is nothing but nice we can say about him.”

“He is actually the reason I went to college.”

Donatelli also recalled how she believed the young Epstein had a crush on her.

“That last year in school, I think he kind of loved me,” she said during her interview. “One night on the beach he kissed me. In fact, our history teacher made up a mock wedding invitation for Jeffrey and myself to show the class.”

“That seems pretty inappropriate now. But back then, we all thought it was funny.”

James Rosen, a retired postal worker who also went to school with Epstein at Lafayette, said in his interview with Patterson that there were a lot of racial tensions at the time, but Epstein got through them unscathed.

“There was a lot of volatility at Lafayette,” Rosen said. “It was a blue-collar area that was, at one time, 90 percent Italian. Then a small amount of Jews moved in, and there was anti-Semitism. The Italians didn’t want the Jews there.”

“There were fights in the schools. They thought we were going to take over.”

Epstein seemed to have made friends easily. He was nicknamed “Eppy” among his pals and spent most of his time playing the piano and working on his prized stamp collection.

Epstein graduated from Lafayette in 1969 at the age of 16 and started taking advanced math classes at Cooper Union in the East Village of Manhattan. Aside from his academic talents, he was not a standout on campus. He was just another kid from Brooklyn, according to a passage in “Filthy Rich.” He started earning money by tutoring classmates.

In 1971, he transferred to New York University where he enrolled in the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences to study mathematical physiology but never graduated.

Two years later, Epstein started teaching at the prestigious Dalton School on the Upper East Side  He got his first taste of the good life at the tony institution, where he was teaching the children of New York’s elite. It also may have been where he first showed signs of predatory behavior.

Epstein often showed up for work pushing the limits on what was deemed appropriate within Dalton’s strict dress code, wearing a fur coat, gold chains and an open shirt that exposed his chest, according to The New York Times.

A former student told the newspaper that Epstein conducted himself in a strange manner with female students, giving them persistent attention and even showed up at a student party where teens were drinking.

“I can remember thinking at the time, ‘This is wrong,’” former student Scott Spizer told the newspaper.

Epstein was known for being charismatic and acting more like a friend to his students than their teacher.

“He was goofy and like a kid himself,” Leslie Kitziger, who graduated in 1978, told the Times, adding that she remembered him as caring and attentive.

Other former students who spoke with the newspaper remembered Epstein in a different light, citing how they would often see him flirting with female students.

“There was a real clarity of the inappropriateness of the behavior — that this isn’t how adult male teachers conduct themselves,” said Millicent Young, a former student during his tenure at Dalton.

Epstein was eventually asked to leave by school officials but the reasons were not clear.

“Epstein was a young teacher who didn’t come up to snuff,” Peter Branch, interim headmaster for Dalton at the time, told The Times.

“So, ultimately, he was asked to leave.”

Meltdown on House floor before resolution condemning Trump comments passes; AOC has new 2020 challenger

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know as you start your day…

Dem-led House formally condemns Trump’s ‘racist’ remarks after floor battle involving Pelosi erupts
The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed a resolution Tuesday evening condemning President Trump’s “racist” remarks against the “squad” of progressive freshman Democratic lawmakers this past weekend. However, the formal condemnation of Trump was arguably overshadowed by a floor fight earlier in the day that ended with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ruled out of order for a breach of decorum for calling tube president a racist on the House floor. The unexpected mayhem in Congress, which briefly resulted in the revocation of Pelosi’s speaking privileges on the House floor, left commentators and lawmakers stunned. (Click on the video below to watch the dramatic floor fight involving Pelosi.)

The final resolution passed by a vote of 240-187. All Democrats voted yea, with a handful of Republicans joining them: Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Will Hurd, Fred Upton and Susan Brooks. Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, who recently left the Republican Party after calling for Trump’s impeachment, also voted yes. The rest of the Republicans voted no. Trump’s remarks initially appeared to have united the Democratic Party when it was struggling with a public feud between Pelosi and the “squad” – Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley. But a CBS News interview with the four congresswomen suggested that hard feelings still remain.

EXCLUSIVE: A look at Ocasio-Cortez’s new challenger in 2020
Scherie Murray, a New York businesswoman who immigrated from Jamaica as a child and is active in state Republican politics, is launching a campaign Wednesday for the congressional seat held by Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Fox News has learned. In a phone interview, Murray, 38, confirmed her intention to run for the New York congressional seat as a Republican. “There is a crisis in Queens, and it’s called AOC,” Murray told Fox News. “And instead of focusing on us, she’s focusing on being famous. Mainly rolling back progress and authoring the job-killing Green New Deal and killing the Amazon New York deal.” Murray takes jabs at AOC in an introductory video that launches her campaign.

Remembering Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens – A ‘judge’s judge’
“Independent-minded” may best describe the life and judicial career of Justice John Paul Stevens, nominated by a Republican President to sit on the Supreme Court, but who in his three-plus decades on the bench staked out generally liberal views on the law and Constitution. Stevens died Tuesday in Florida after a brief illness. He was 99, and earlier this year released a memoir of his years on the bench. The oldest member of the Court before he retired in 2010, Stevens had been a difficult justice to peg, almost from the day he was first nominated 35 years earlier. On the bench, Stevens is remembered for taking out of a case only what was presented to him, refusing to issue sweeping pronouncements on judicial philosophy. This minimalist approach earned him both praise and criticism, but colleagues say he never swayed.

The president of Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the U.S., was removed from her position Tuesday after just eight months. Dr. Leana Wen tweeted that Planned Parenthood’s board had “ended my employment at a secret meeting. We were engaged in good faith negotiations about my departure based on philosophical differences over the direction and future of Planned Parenthood.” She later posted a copy of a letter to Planned Parenthood officials in which she said that she was “leaving the organization sooner than I’d hoped …”

‘El Chapo’ faces sentencing
Will “El Chapo,” Mexico’s most notorious drug lord, go quietly when he gets the last word in a New York courtroom? That’s one of the biggest questions when Joaquin Guzman is sentenced in New York City on Wednesday. The highly-anticipated hearing could be his last chance to speak publicly before spending the rest of his life behind bars at a maximum security U.S. prison. Guzman, 62, was convicted in February on multiple conspiracy counts in an epic drug-trafficking case. The guilty verdict at an 11-week trial triggered what the government says is a well-justified mandatory sentence of life without parole.

A Washington state man who received a heart transplant last year said surveillance cameras captured the moment a stranger stole life-saving medication from his doorstep last week.

‘PORCH PIRATES’ RETURN STOLEN WRESTLING BELTS TO BOY WITH AUTISM AHEAD OF BRAIN SURGERY

Ron Kraft, of Pierce County, said he needs to take medication every 12 hours since receiving a transplant in 2018 after his heart failed, Seattle’s KIRO-TV reported.

“If I don’t, my body starts rejecting my heart and things just start going all wrong,”  Kraft said.  “It’s life or death.”

Kraft called the pharmacy last Tuesday when he did not see the package that he expected to be delivered to his home. When the pharmacy confirmed the medication had been delivered, Kraft said he checked his home security cameras.  The surveillance video shows a man approach Kraft’s home with his dog, snag the package from his back doorstep and then walk away.

Kraft was able to get an emergency supply of medication from the pharmacy directly. He’s asking the porch pirate to come forward with the stolen package. It was unclear from reporting if a police report had been filed.

Formisano “went in the front door,” Thomas Verrone, a retired sheriff’s officer and a neighbor told the paper. “He shot the boyfriend three times and he shot the wife two times. She ran out of that house, went to next-door neighbor banging on the door, yelling she had been shot. But it was late at night so no one answered.”

Formisano allegedly said he went to the house to drop off something when he suspected there was another man in the home. He allegedly told detectives he “blacked out” before he shot the victims.

A 6-year-old Utah girl died Monday after her father accidentally hit her with a golf ball, investigators said.

The two were at the Sleepy Ridge golf course in Orem when Aria Hill was struck by a ball in the back of her neck while sitting in a golf cart, Orem police Lt. Trent Colledge said.

She was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City in critical condition and died from her injuries hours later. The girl’s uncle said Hill often went golfing with her father.

“She loved doing it and had a good time with it all,” David Smith told the Deseret News. “That was one of their things that they would do together. It was something that was really important to them and something they did all the time.”

Police were investigating the incident but it appeared to be an accident, Colledge said.

Orem is about 40 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.
