Dems’ impeachment witness under fire for past anti-Trump comments, mentioning Barron Trump in joke

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know as you start your Thursday …

Democratic Trump impeachment witness under fire for invoking Barron Trump’s name in joke at hearing
A Stanford Law professor is facing criticism after bringing up President Trump’s youngest son in a joke during Wednesday’s impeachment hearing, sparking laughs from some in the House Judiciary Committee audience — and provoking a furious response from the White House.

The White House blasted Karlan as “classless” and the Trump campaign called her joke “disgusting.” First lady Melania Trump, Barron’s mother, was incensed.

“A minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics,” she tweeted. “Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it.”

Karlan later apologized but put in another dig at the president. “I want to apologize for what I said earlier about the president’s son. It was wrong of me to do that. I wish the president would apologize, obviously, for the things that he’s done that’s wrong, but I do regret having said that.”

Karlan is clearly not a fan of Trump. In a newly surfaced video from 2017, she told an American Constitution Society panel that she couldn’t stomach walking past the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. At the same event, she also accused Trump of sexually assaulting “more women than 99.99% of all of the people who have entered this country illegally.”

During Wednesday’s hearing, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., noted that Karlan had also appeared on an anti-Trump podcast, disparaged conservatives, and donated $1,200 to Barack Obama, $2,000 to Hillary Clinton, and $1,000 to Elizabeth Warren.

The controversy over Karlan’s joke overshadowed a day of testimony Wednesday where lawmakers and legal scholars sparred, with Democrats and their witnesses reviving concerns raised during the Russia probe, and Republicans and their sole witness arguing the impeachment of Trump seems “predetermined,” “woefully inadequate,” and “dangerous.” Click here for more on our top story.

Trump administration considering sending 14,000 more US troops to Middle East over Iran threat: report.
The Trump administration is considering sending as many as 14,000 additional troops, dozens of more ships and other military hardware to counter the growing threat of Iran, the Wall Street Journal reports. The move could double the number of U.S. military personnel who have been sent to the region since the start of a troop buildup in May. President Trump is expected to make a decision on the new deployments as soon as this month.

Just last week, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard threatened to destroy the United States and its Middle Eastern allies, accusing them during a televised speech of instigating the violent protests that erupted in November after the announcement of massive fuel price hikes.

Minneapolis man who killed girlfriend, hid body sentenced: prosecutors

A Minneapolis man was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday in the death of his girlfriend, Adelle “Addie” Jensen, who disappeared four years ago and whose body has never been found, prosecutors announced.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Joshua Dow, 35, received 20 years in prison as part of a plea agreement, adding that he pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder in the death of his child’s mother, who was 25-years-old at the time of her death.

MINNESOTA PILOT RESCUED AFTER PLANE GETS ENTANGLED IN POWER LINES, DANGLES IN MID-AIR

New evidence has helped make it clear as to what happened to Jensen four years ago, according to a news release from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said Dow shot Jensen on November 18, 2015, around 5 a.m. in his home in north Minneapolis. He then took Jensen’s body to a warehouse where he had worked and reportedly stuffed it into a locker. He later dismembered the body and disposed of the remains across the city, prosecutors said.

He and his brother chopped up a couch, which had Jensen’s blood on it, and dumped it in different locations, Fox 9 reported, adding that Dow also forced his brother to help him paint the living room walls to hide the evidence.

Dow lied to police and to Jensen’s parents about seeing her alive, prosecutors said.

During Wednesday’s sentencing, six members of Jensen’s family addressed the court reading victim impact statements.

Jensen’s mother said, “For the past four years, Joshua Dow has created many victims. [Victim’s minor daughter] has been without her mother, our girls have been without their sister, we have been without our beloved daughter. And many, many family members and friends have been devastated by the horrific murder of Adelle Katherine Jensen. Joshua Dow is solely and heinously responsible for taking away a beautiful young soul from God’s world.”

At the time of the shooting, the couple was reportedly separated.

Dow was convicted of interference with a dead body and first-degree sale of drugs in 2016 and is still in prison on those charges, prosecutors said, adding that he was due to be released in February 2020.

The on-going search for a 6-year-old girl missing after being swept away in a Tonto Creek, Ariz., rainstorm last week is now a recovery operation, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday, an indication the child is not expected to be found alive.

In a late-afternoon briefing, agency spokesman Lt. Virgil Dodd said, “We would love to keep this hopeful, but because of the circumstances we are considering it a search and recovery” in the search for Willa Rawlings, the Arizona Republic reported.

“It’s been six days, we’re going our seventh day. We don’t know where (the girl) is at. We just want to find her for the family to get some closure.”

— Gila County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Virgil Dodd

The search, which began after Rawlings was swept away with two other children last Friday, would resume at 8 a.m. today, he said.

SINGLE SHOE FOUND IN SEARCH FOR MISSING 6-YEAR-OLD GIRL SWEPT AWAY IN ARIZONA CREEK

In the last two days, searchers found both a pair of shoes and pants believed to belong to the missing girl and have widened their search area, the report said.

Officials will employ drones and a remote-controlled sonar device to check a two-mile stretch of the waters, and possibly a helicopter, weather permitting, as rain is forecast for the area overnight, potentially causing the creek to rise again, the newspaper reported.

The girl was one of nine family members in a military-style truck that became stuck Friday while trying to cross Tonto Creek at the Bar X crossing off State Route 188, near Roosevelt Lake northeast of the Phoenix area, the report said.

2 ARIZONA CHILDREN, BOTH 5, FOUND DEAD, ONE STILL MISSING AFTER VEHICLE SWEPT AWAY BY FLOODWATERS

The bodies of her 5-year-old brother, Colby, as well as her 5-year-old cousin, Austin, were found Saturday. Her parents, Daniel and Lacey Rawlings, and four other children were rescued, the Republic reported.

At the time of the incident, the crossing was closed with barricades and signs because of a storm that dropped an estimated 2 inches of rain in the area.

A memorial service for Austin Rawlings was scheduled for Friday afternoon at a Peoria church, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the girl’s family.

The tragic incident occurred in an area where nearby residents have been pushing for construction of a bridge for years, the Arizona Republic reported.

Tonto Creek, which is more than 70 miles long, flows from just below the Mogollon Rim down to lower terrain, where it meets the Salt River. At that point, the waters are controlled by Roosevelt Dam, forming Roosevelt Lake.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

California wildfire aftermath: PG&E nears $13.5B deal with victims, report says

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is near closing on a $13.5 billion payout to victims affected by California wildfires that were caused by its power lines, according to a Bloomberg report.

The utility giant would pay half in cash and the other half in stock for the newly organized company, people familiar with the matter said.

Reaching a settlement with the individual victims of the wildfires sparked by its equipment would be a major step toward resolving the company’s bankruptcy filed in January after facing $30 billion in liability from hundreds of lawsuits from fires in 2017 and 2018.

The company proposed paying victims a maximum of $8.4 billion in September. In a statement to Fox News, PG&E said it was “committed to satisfying all wildfire claims in full” as required by law and laid out in its bankruptcy plan.

PG&E CORP.FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY FOLLOWING WILDFIRE CLAIMS

It said that PG&E has already reached settlements with two of the three major groups of wildfire victims in its bankruptcy proceedings, which include a $1 billion settlement with cities, counties and public entities and an $11 billion agreement with insurance companies that have already paid claims for 2017 and 2018 wildfires.

The company did not comment on the new developments in the Bloomberg report, as mediation discussions are confidential, it said.

PG&E has spent months trying to negotiate a restructuring plan to emerge from bankruptcy by the middle of next year.

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRE THREAT, BLACKOUTS HAVE LONGTIME RESIDENTS READY TO MOVE ‘TOMORROW’

The compensation of individual wildfire victims has proved the most formidable of negotiations for the company. After the company initially offered a mere $8.4 billion, California Gov. Gavin Newsom threatened a state takeover if the utility could not reach a deal with creditors and wildfire victims soon.

PG&E has invoked outrage across the state for imposing blackouts on millions of Californians during high winds to keep its power lines from igniting more wildfires. In October alone, PG&E imposed mass blackouts four times.

Additionally, equipment from PG&E sparked two fires in the northern part of the state, which was not a part of the blackout. The fires started in an area where the power was left on because it was not seen as a high fire risk.

Police in Tennessee are investigating the “brutal murder” of a 50-year-old woman who was found dead Wednesday morning inside the counseling center where she worked, authorities said.

“Madison Precinct detectives are investigating the brutal murder of counselor Melissa Hamilton, 50, sometime overnight inside Crossroads Counseling, 521 Gallatin Pk S, where she worked,” the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department tweeted on Wednesday.

Hamilton’s body was found with obvious trauma, police added.

Investigators said Hamilton facilitated a group session at Crossroads Counseling that ended at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. It was not uncommon for Hamilton to hold individual counseling following a group session, according to police.

Hamilton’s car was found parked near the front door of the center, police added.

The alleged murder took place in a counseling room toward the back of the building, Fox 17 reported.

Police are reportedly trying to identify who was in the group session on Tuesday night. Detectives are also interviewing Hamilton’s clients and going through files as part of their investigation, according to the station, which said officers are canvassing the area for surveillance footage, as well.

A Marine stationed in Southern California was arrested Monday on suspicion of attempting to smuggle two Chinese women in the trunk of a car across the U.S.-Mexico border.

The unidentified junior-enlisted Marine was taken into custody at the San Ysidro port of entry near San Diego around 1:30 p.m., Marine spokesman Lt. Cameron Edinburgh said in a statement to Fox News.

The 20-year-old is assigned to the 1st Marine Division’s headquarters battalion at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

16 MARINES ARRESTED ON ACCUSATIONS RANGING FROM HUMAN SMUGGLING TO DRUGS, OFFICIALS SAY

Customs officials found the two women in the trunk of a 2007 Ford Mustang when the Marine was pulled aside for additional screening. Customs and Border Patrol officials are investigating the incident.

“The Marine is currently being held in civilian custody.,” Edinburgh said.”The determination as to the adjudicating authority has not yet been made.”

The Marine is expected to face federal charges, a CBP spokesperson said.

Edinburgh said the Marine has not served in the Southwest Border Support Mission, where U.S. troops are assisting border agents on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Monday’s arrest comes as several other Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton are facing human trafficking charges. Six out of two dozen Marines recently pled guilty to human trafficking and drug charges at military court-martials.

Virginia firefighter killed in Thanksgiving shooting shielded son in ‘last act of love’

A Virginia firefighter mistakenly killed on Thanksgiving while shielding her 5-year-old son from a spray of bullets has been praised for her “last act of love.”

Richmond Fire Department Lt. Ashley Nicole Berry, 33, was at the wrong place at the wrong time when a stray bullet struck her as she left the home of her boyfriend’s family, Hopewell Police Chief Kamran Afzal told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He said the apartment next door was the shooter’s intended target.

Police and family members have remembered Berry’s heroic final act in the days since her death.

“We believe she was shielding her child,” Afzal told the paper. “That’s what I’d expect from [a first responder]. Firefighters and police officers give up their lives for other people and don’t even think twice about it.”

Berry’s father, Waverly Berry, recalled telling his grandson how important his mother’s sacrifice was.

“[I told him] ‘Your mother’s last act of love, for you, was to push you down,” he told WTVR-TV. “[She pushed you down] for a reason. The good thing is that God put his covering over you, so that we could still have you.”

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, her cousin George Berry III said it was Ashley’s “motherly instinct” that let her protect her son from a “hail of gunfire.”

“She was a beloved mother of three and will forever be her children’s hero,” he said.

No arrests have been made in the case. It was unclear what relationship the shooter had with the residents of the neighboring apartment.

Four New York City corrections officers were suspended this week after failing to intervene in an attempted suicide that left an 18-year-old inmate in a medically induced coma, a report revealed Tuesday.

Three officers and a captain were suspended after they failed to stop Nicholas Feliciano from hanging himself inside a Rikers Island jail cell last week, The New York Times reported, citing sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

NORTH CAROLINA MAN ARRESTED AFTER WOMAN’S BODY DISCOVERED IN CHURCH ON THANKSGIVING: REPORT

The officers reportedly took seven minutes to intervene despite being able to watch Feliciano on a guard desk where officers can monitor inmate activity through video feeds. The guards were recorded themselves, on a separate video, failing to act.

An officer was also seen opening the door to the cell where the inmate was hanging and then closing it and walking away without ever having gone inside, the Times’ report continues.

Department of Corrections Commissioner Cynthia Brann confirmed the four suspensions.

As of Tuesday Feliciano was being held in the Elmhurst Hospital Prison Ward, where he was on a respirator with no brain activity.

He had been arrested last month because of a parole violation.

New York City lawmakers voted in October to close the Rikers Island jail complex, which has become synonymous with violence and neglect, and replace it with four smaller jails intended to be more modern and humane.

Rikers Island has housed jail inmates since the 1930s and has long been accused of brutality.

North Carolina woman dies after her cigarette ignites oxygen tank, causing explosion

A North Carolina woman died Tuesday after her oxygen tank exploded — caused by an ignition from the cigarette she was smoking, investigators said.

Belinda Coble, 61, was being administered oxygen at her home in Zebulon, around 25 miles east of Raleigh, while she was smoking. The cigarette ignited the tank, sparking a small explosion and fire, according to officials.

Coble’s husband was asleep in a separate room at the time of the incident, WNCN reported, citing the Nash County Sheriff’s Office. The sounds of the explosion and the smoke alarm reportedly woke him up and he quickly extinguished the small fire.

“If a spark catches the oxygen and has a fuel source, it will ignite and spread extremely fast,” the blog post read. “The ‘fuel source’ can be anything from a small patch of dry grass, a carpet, or your clothing or hair.”

Experts advise to keep a 10-foot radius between the oxygen tank and people who are smoking, “or from campfires or other open flames.”

San Francisco’s Tenderloin District kicked off a new privately funded program Tuesday to increase the number of times its sidewalks are blasted with industrial-grade pressure washers from once a month to once a week following complaints of large amounts of human and animal feces littering the streets.

The Tenderloin Community Benefit District, which is a non-profit neighborhood group, secured an additional $260,000 this year to essentially quadruple the number of times the neighborhood’s sidewalks are professionally cleaned a month, according to the program’s supervisor Matt Haney. Property owners within the district’s 30 square blocks helped fund the program as the neighborhood continues to be plagued by a large homeless population, San Francisco’s KPIX-TV reported.

“We all know that we need more foot patrols out here,” Haney said. “We need more homeless outreach out here. We need more bathrooms open, we need more trash cans. We want a clean, safe and healthy community for everyone who lives here and works here. This is a huge, huge step forward.”

The program launched this week is meant to bolster cleaning efforts already carried out by the city’s Department of Public Works, which steam cleans and uses fire hoses to wash the streets of the Tenderloin District every morning, Peter Lau, a spokesman for the department, told Kron 4.

Also under the new program, six members of the non-profit’s clean team will report to different sections of the neighborhood on a daily basis to sweep the sidewalks using new portable, cordless, power washing tools, KPIX reported.

Last week, San Francisco mayor London Breed announced she would extend 24-hour staffing for three public restrooms set up three months ago under the “Pit Stop” pilot program until June 2020, Fox 2 San Francisco reported. Haney said only one of these restrooms serves the Tenderloin District. He called on the mayor to open more 24-hour restrooms in the neighborhood in order to help cut down on the number of “Code Brown” or 4-1-1 calls to Public Works and limit the amount of human waste left on the sidewalks.
