An off-duty Florida police officer jumped into action after witnessing an SUV hitting the bank of a driveway and going airborne Friday morning.

Reserve Ponce Intel patrol Officer Rich Gardner was on State Road 415 in New Smyrna Beach when he saw a white SUV drift across the road before it hit a back on a driveway and go airborne. The vehicle hit some trees before landing in a ditch.

Gardner and another man ran to the smoking SUV and helped the two people – a man and a woman – in the vehicle, according to Fox 35.

“There was a female inside that was at the closest point to the door, and she was in some pain, she said she had back pain. I just asked her to grab my arm, so I could pull her out. We got her out first and then the driver ended up jumping out on his own,” Gardner said.

The police officer stayed with the pair until a nurse took over for them. He told Fox 35 that he believes they’re both going to survive.

“It’s almost surreal to see something like that,” Garner added, “You don’t expect to see something like that in your normal course of the day.”

It’s still not clear why they drifted across the oncoming lane.

Butch Robidoux, an office specialist at the Ponce Inlet Police Department told Fox News they are aware of the incident but had no comment because the Gardner was off-duty at the time.

Georgia cop holds on to suspect’s vehicle as he’s dragged onto freeway after traffic stop, video shows

Dramatic dash camera video shows the moment when a Georgia police officer jumped into the driver’s side window of a fleeing vehicle following a routine traffic stop on Thursday.

Dunwoody Polie Officer Nathan Daley had pulled over a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu after the driver, identified as 35-year-old Derric Simpson, allegedly violated the state’s hands-free law. According to authorities, Simpson put the vehicle in gear, attempting to flee and Daley quickly jumped into the driver’s side window.

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu is seen in the video swerving and eventually smashing into vehicles to shake the officer as he traveled along the entrance ramp to the I-285 freeway. As he was left hanging out of the vehicle, Daley reportedly told Simpson to stop the car multiple times, but he wouldn’t stop, according to the Dunwoody Police Department.

WOMAN SHOT BY TEXAS COP WAS FIRE CAPTAIN’S DAUGHTER

Immediately after entering the freeway, Simpson made a sharp left turn, merging into traffic and clipping a white Ford van, which caused Daley to tumble into the middle of the busy road.

Georgia officers eventually caught up with Simpson further down the freeway after the Malibu was involved in another crash just before Roswell Road. He ditched the wrecked vehicle and fled to a forested area near the freeway, and was later taken into custody.

Simpson was arrested on multiple charges including aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated battery, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and trafficking ecstasy, the Dunwoody Police Department said.

THREE ARRESTED IN MURDER OF OFF-DUTY LAPD OFFICER

Daley was taken to the hospital where he was treated, released and is expected to make a full recovery. He posted a video message while draped in a hospital gown, calling the injuries just a “little nick nack”

“It does look as bad as it feels, but you know me, I will bounce back 10 times stronger,” Daley told the local community. “I love you guys, thank you so much for your support.”

A moment of hesitation turned out to be an extremely profitable one for a former Air Force pilot who took a second glance at an Oregon lottery ticket before tossing it only to find he won $6.5 million.

William Bowker regularly plays the lotto and when his granddaughter came to visit him recently, he had her check his tickets.

“She thought it was a Mega Million ticket, and started circling matching numbers on the ticket,” Bowker said according to a press release from the Oregon Lottery.  “But they were for the wrong game. I had an Oregon’s Game Megabucks ticket.”

The 94-year-old veteran was about to throw out the $5 ticket when he decided to take one more look.

“I am glad I did. I immediately thought — BOOM! I won!” he said.

According to the press release, Bower opted to take the lump sum payment, earning him $2.2 million after taxes.

Bower called a family meeting right away to discuss his earnings, adding that he plans to share the prize money with his family.

“I have what I need, and I’m 94,” he said. “This is a wonderful way to help my family.”

Body of slain Illinois student may be in landfill, new details from killer’s attorneys suggest

New information given Friday to the family of a University of Illinois student who was kidnapped and murdered in 2017 suggests her body may be in a landfill in the eastern part of the state.

Yingying Zhang, 26, a visiting Chinese scholar, was killed by former grad student Brendt Christensen. Prosecutors say he raped, choked and stabbed Zhang before beating her to death with a bat and decapitating her.

Autopsy report for Saoirse Kennedy Hill shows ‘no trauma,’ cause of death pending

An autopsy report released Friday on Saoirse Kennedy Hill revealed her body suffered “no trauma.”

The official cause of death for the 22-year-old granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy has not been determined, pending the results of a toxicology report, according to The Boston Herald.

Kennedy Hill was found unresponsive at the family’s Hyannisport, Mass., compound Thursday afternoon. She is believed to have died of a drug overdose, according to reports.

Members of the Kennedy family were seen arriving at the compound Friday, including Kennedy Hill’s grandmother Ethel Kennedy and mother Courtney Kennedy Hill, who were seen on a boat with several others. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Anthony Shriver were also seen nearby, the Herald reported.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. posted a remembrance of his niece on Instagram.

“Saoirse was fierce, both in her love for her family and yearning for justice,” he wrote. “A fearless adventurer, she inspired curiosity and daring in her friends. But her greatest gift was to find humor in everything and to give us all the gift of her laughter — and our own. The gaping hole that she leaves in our family is a wound too large to ever heal.”

Sister, 30, held in slaying of ex-Portland State basketball player, 22; two other family members hurt

A 22-year-old athlete who played basketball and football at Portland State University in Oregon was fatally shot Friday afternoon, allegedly by his 30-year-old sister, who was later taken into police custody.

There was no immediate word on a motive for the crime, which police said happened in a home in northeast Portland. Two women, identified as an aunt and grandmother of the siblings, were wounded but expected to survive, according to authorities.

The death of Deante Strickland, who had recently graduated, was confirmed by the school Friday. Strickland was also a state champion football player in high school, according to OregonLive.com.

The airport already requires single-use foodware to be compostable. It’s unclear if venders will be penalized if they sell plastic bottles after the ban takes effect Aug. 20.

Approximately 4 million water bottles are sold each year at the airport.

The ban is part of a city ordinance approved in 2014 that prohibits the sale of plastic water bottles on city property.

At least a dozen anti-ICE protesters were arrested in Portland, Ore., on Friday after blocking a driveway to the local office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The protest, which reportedly remained nonviolent, was part of a nationwide “Never Again” effort led by the Jewish Voice for Peace Portland, OregonLive reported.

The participants demanded the defunding of ICE, the closing of migrant detention centers and protections for refugees and those seeking asylum in the U.S.

Law enforcement warned the protesters they could be arrested for remaining in the driveway, according to OregonLive.

“We didn’t really know what would happen when they went onto the driveway,” Jewish Voice for Peace Portland’s media director said.

He added that the organizers were working to bail out those who were arrested.

Before reaching the driveway, the protesters marched through the streets blocking traffic, according to OregonLive.

Portland has been the scene for previous protests by anti-ICE demonstrators. Last summer a group called Occupy ICE created a campsite outside the city’s ICE office that was ultimately dismantled when city police officers cleared them away, leaving the city with a massive cleanup of the site afterward.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler drew the wrath of local ICE agents, who accused the Democrat of abetting the protesters.

A woman was killed and four others were hurt Friday afternoon after a cliff collapsed at a Southern California beach, authorities said.

The bluff gave way around 3 p.m. in Encinitas, a suburban area north of San Diego, according to city officials. The area is popular with locals and vacationers.

The beach was reportedly crowded at the time of the collapse. Helicopter footage captured by San Diego’s KNSD-TV showed beach chairs, towels, surfboards and beach toys strewn about the sand.

The collapse trapped victims in an earthen pile which measured about 10 feet tall at its highest point, according to Encinitas Fire Chief Mike Stein. Rescue crews brought in service dogs to search for victims.

Two people were flown to hospitals in critical condition, and two were treated for minor injuries, Stein said. Authorities did not release their names or ages.

City officials closed hundreds of yards of shoreline around the accident site as a precaution.

Bluffs give way four to eight times a year in Southern California, but “nothing of this magnitude,” said Brian Ketterer, California State Parks’ southern field division chief.

“This is a naturally eroding coastline,” Encinitas Lifeguard Capt. Larry Giles said. “There’s really no rhyme or reason, but that’s what it does naturally. …. This is what it does, and this is how are beaches are actually partially made. It actually has these failures.”

The suburbs north of San Diego have contended with rising water levels in the Pacific Ocean, pressuring bluffs along the coast. Some bluffs are fortified with concrete walls to prevent multimillion-dollar homes from falling into the sea.

Homes on top of the bluff were not in any danger, Stein said.
