A New York City art gallery owner with a bruised eye says he was beaten by a group of teens on the street Tuesday because he was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat.

“It’s sad to get beat up for wearing this hat. This is America,” Jahangir Turan, 42, said, claiming more than a dozen attackers shouted “F— Trump!” during the assault, FOX 5 in New York reported.

“They were saying ‘Why are you wearing that?’ One girl flipped the hat off my head, and I tried to grab it. Then they came after me. One guy grabbed me from behind and slammed my head against a metal post,” the New York Daily News reported.

Turan said the hat was an impulse buy at Trump Tower in Manhattan shortly before the attack. He was heading to dinner with a friend in Chinatown when he was allegedly jumped, according to the Daily News.

Police are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made because Turan was unable to identify his attackers, FOX 5 reported.

US withdraws from historic arms control treaty with Russia; Michelle Obama addresses calls to join 2020 race

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know as you start your Friday…

US walks away from landmark INF arms control treaty with Russia
The United States is formally withdrawing from the historic Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty that President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev signed more than 30 years ago, sparking fears of a new arms race. The U.S. blames Russia for the demise of the INF treaty, senior administrations officials say, arguing that Moscow has been violating the terms of the agreement for years. Moscow, the U.S. argues, has been developing weapons that threaten America and its allies in Europe. Without the constraints of the treaty, the Trump administration says it can now counter Russia — and China, which wasn’t a signatory of the INF, but was developing similar weapons that would have violated it, too.

The U.S. withdrawal from the INF comes as South Korea’s military and presidential office reported that North Korea fired what appeared to be short-range ballistic missiles twice Friday into the sea off its eastern coast — its third round of weapons tests in just over a week.

Michelle Obama to Dems’ rescue?
Former first lady Michelle Obama is resisting calls for her to run for president, saying there’s “zero chance” that she will seek the Oval Office. In a new interview published in Amtrak’s magazine The National, Obama sat down with 12-year-old journalist Hilde Lysiak to promote her Better Make Room campaign aimed at engaging college students. The kid reporter pressed Obama about seeking the highest office in the land. “There are so many ways to improve this country and build a better world, and I keep doing plenty of them, from working with young people to helping families lead healthier lives,” Obama responded. “But sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office will never be one of them. It’s just not for me.”

The interview appeared as liberal filmmaker Michael Moore urged the former first lady to run for president following Wednesday night’s Democratic debate. Moore apparently has his doubts about the field of Democratic potential challengers to President Trump, led by the front-runner, former Vice President Joe Biden.

A Michelle Obama candidacy could arguably inspire Democratic voters who remain unimpressed with the current crop of 2020 candidates – and perhaps save her husband’s legacy after so many of the potential nominees attacked former President Obama and his policies during Wednesday’s debate.

RFK granddaughter Saoirse Kennedy Hill, 22, found dead at family compound
The 22-year-old granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy died Thursday at the fabled political family’s compound in Hyannisport, Mass., the family said in a statement. Saoirse Kennedy Hill was the daughter of Courtney Kennedy Hill, the fifth of 11 children born to the late New York senator and wife Ethel, The New York Times reported. She attended Boston College, where she was a member of the class of 2020, the university confirmed to The Boston Globe. Boston 25 News, citing a law enforcement source, reported that Hill died from a suspected drug overdose.

US preparing to withdraw thousands of troops from Afghanistan as part of proposed deal with Taliban
The Pentagon is preparing to withdraw thousands of troops from Afghanistan as part of a proposed peace deal with the Taliban, U.S. officials told Fox News on Thursday. One official warned the withdrawal would be subject to the completion of any agreement. So far, no such deal has been finalized. The Trump administration has undertaken eight rounds of negotiations with the Taliban, which controlled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001, led by envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, the Afghan-born former U.S. ambassador to Kabul. Khalilzad has hinted that a peace agreement could be reached in the next round of talks, scheduled to be held in Qatar.

Dow flips from big gain to big loss after Trump announces more China tariffs
U.S. stocks surrendered big gains Thursday, falling hard after President Trump tweeted that additional tariffs would be slapped on Chinese goods. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had been up 311 points before the tweet — meaning that within minutes of the tariff news the blue-chip index had plunged from a peak to a trough of more than 600 points. Trump said he will impose 10 percent tariffs on Sept. 1 on the remaining $300 billion in Chinese imports he hasn’t already taxed. China’s foreign minister was disappointed in Trump’s decision. “Imposing tariffs is definitely not the right way to resolve trade frictions,” Wang Yi told reporters in Bangkok on Friday. News of the additional tariffs follows the latest round of trade negotiations between the U.S. and China. The next meeting is scheduled to be in September.

Border Patrol agent accused of killing 4 women, kidnapping 5th to stand trial in Texas

A Border Patrol agent accused of killing four women and kidnapping a fifth in separate incidents is set to stand trial in Texas next week, a judge announced Thursday.

Juan David Ortiz, 35, has been held on a $2.56 million bond after allegedly killing four women over the course of 11 days in September 2018.  He served as an intelligence supervisor for the Border Patrol and worked as a federal agent for 10 years.

‘SERIAL KILLER’ BORDER PATROL AGENT ACCUSED OF 4 MURDERS HELD ON $2.5M BOND

Ortiz will stand trial next Thursday in the 406th District Court of Texas after a judge pushed back the date by three days from its original Monday start date, KGNS-TV of Laredo reported. He’s pleaded not guilty to four counts of capital murder.

Investigators have accused Ortiz of being a serial killer, according to Webb County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz, who noted at the time of the arrest that all four of the dead women had worked as prostitutes and all four were shot in the head and left in a road in the rural south Texas county.

The violence allegedly took place over 11 days, beginning with the Sept. 4 discovery of the remains of 29-year-old woman Melissa Ramirez. According to a police affidavit, Ortiz said he killed Ramirez, a mother of two, the previous day.

A second woman, 42-year-old Claudine Anne Luera, was found shot and left in the road last Sept. 13, badly injured but still alive, according to the affidavit. The mother of five died at a hospital later that day.

A third woman, Erika Pena, claimed she struggled with Ortiz inside his truck, where he pointed a gun at her, but managed to escape to a gas station where she found a state trooper to help her. Ortiz allegedly told investigators he picked up and killed two more women after Pena escaped.

Deputies tracked Ortiz to a parking lot in Laredo where he was hiding in his pick-up truck around 2 a.m. He was arrested and allegedly failed to cooperate with investigators in revealing the identities of his final two victims. The final two victims were later identified as Guiselda Alicia Hernandez, 35, and Janelle Nikki Enriquez, 28, USA Today reported. Authorities recovered the bodies of all four victims. At least two were U.S. citizens.

At the time of the arrest, Border Patrol issued a statement offering its “sincerest condolences” to the women’s families and saying criminal activity by its employees is not tolerated.

Death of RFK’s granddaughter is latest in string of Kennedy family tragedies

Police were stationed outside the home of 91-year-old Ethel Kennedy on Thursday night, hours after paramedics responded to reports of an “unattended death” at her family’s Hyannis Port, Mass., compound.

A family statement had confirmed earlier that Saoirse Kennedy Hill, the 22-year-old granddaughter of Ethel and the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, had died at the home, though no cause of death was disclosed. A report in The New York Times, however, said the daughter of Courtney Kennedy Hill — one of Robert and Ethel Kennedy’s 11 children — had died of an apparent drug overdose.

“The world is a little less beautiful today,” Ethel Kennedy was quoted as saying in the family statement.

JOHN F. KENNEDY JR. SHOULD NOT HAVE FLOWN THE NIGHT HE DIED, SAYS PAL: ‘THAT IS NOT EASY FOR ME TO SAY’

Saoirse (pronounced Sur-sha) Kennedy Hill was a student at Boston College and was expected to graduate in 2020, the Boston Globe reported.

Her father was Paul Michael Hill, one of four defendants falsely convicted in connection with bombings attributed to the Irish Republican Army in 1974.

The circumstances of the death were not immediately known. The case was being investigated by Barnstable police and detectives from the Massachusetts State Police, according to the Globe.

It was the latest in a string of tragedies for one of America’s most prominent political families.

Robert F. Kennedy was fatally shot just over 50 years ago after he won the California presidential primary on June 6, 1968.

JFK ASSASSINATION: THEN AND NOW

His death while running for president came just five years after the nation was thrust into mourning when President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed by a gunman in Dallas in November 1963.

Their deaths followed those of their siblings Joseph Kennedy Jr., who was killed in August 1944 during World War II at age 29, and Kathleen Kennedy, who died in a plane crash in France in May 1948 at age 28.

The family’s next generation has seen tragedy as well: Robert Kennedy’s son David died of an overdose in 1984 and another son Michael was killed in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colo., in 1997.

Two years later, President Kennedy’s son John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette and his sister-in-law died when he crashed a small plane off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.

More recently, Kara Kennedy, Ted Kennedy’s daughter, died of a heart attack at a health club at the age of 51 in 2011 and Mary Richardson Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s wife, died of suicide in 2012.

“Our hearts are shattered by the loss of our beloved Saoirse,” the Kennedy family said in a statement about Kennedy Hill. “Her life was filled with hope, promise and love. She cared deeply about friends and family, especially her mother Courtney, her father Paul, her stepmother Stephanie, and her grandmother Ethel.”

She was one of Robert and Ethel Kennedy’s 35 grandchildren.

A Tennessee Uber driver shot a man who fired a gun at him and his passenger on Wednesday night, according to police.

The Uber driver told police that he drove his passenger to a Nashville liquor store and once there, the passenger held the door open for a man later identified as Jason Johns Jr., who gave him an “odd look,” according to The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

Police said Johns then followed the Uber driver and passenger to a nearby street and when the driver stopped to let out his passenger, Johns fired shots from about 10 feet away.

The Uber driver then allegedly returned fire, striking Johns, who took off on foot then got a ride to a local hospital where he was treated for wounds to his chest and an arm, WKRN-TV reported, citing affidavits.

Affidavits reportedly said Johns first lied about what had happened but later admitted that he was “disrespected” at the liquor store so he followed the Uber and opened fire.

The Uber driver and his passenger were not hit by gunfire, police said.

Johns, 18, left behind a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder that was reported stolen, according to police.

Johns has been charged with aggravated assault and theft.

Police said was convicted of robbery when he was 15 and was charged last year with aggravated robbery after he admitted to stealing a woman’s car at gunpoint outside an apartment complex in Hermitage, Tenn., which is about twenty minutes from Nashville.

Manhattan prosecutors have subpoenaed the Trump Organization was subpoenaed for documents related to a $130,000 to former adult film star Stormy Daniels made days prior to the 2016 presidential election in exchange for her silence about an alleged sexual relationship with President Trump more than a decade ago.

Trump Organization attorney Marc Mukasey decried the subpoena, which was first reported by The New York Times, as “a political hit job.”

“It’s just harassment of the President, his family, and his business, using subpoenas and leaks as weapons,” Mukasey said. “We will respond as appropriate.”

The Times reported that state investigators are looking into whether senior Trump Organization executives filed false business records about the payment. The company, which is owned by Trump and operated by his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric, reimbursed the president’s then-personal attorney Michael Cohen for the payment to Daniels. Prosecutors are trying to determine whether they illegally wrote off the reimbursement as a legal expense.

Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to charges that included campaign finance violations, lying to Congress and facilitating hush-money payments to Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, which he says he did at the instruction of Trump. He is serving a three-year prison sentence.

Trump has denied both affairs and any allegations of wrongdoing.

The Times reported that the district attorney’s office has also subpoenaed American Media Inc., the publisher of the National Enquirer tabloid, which bought the rights to a story about the alleged affair between McDougal and Trump without any intention of publishing it.

The $150,000 deal with AMI, brokered through Cohen, was a favor to Trump from longtime friend David Pecker, who was the CEO and chairman at the time.

AMI cooperated with Manhattan federal prosecutors, resulting in a non-prosecution agreement that stated the company “admitted that it made the $150,000 payment in concert with a candidate’s presidential campaign, and in order to ensure that the woman did not publicize damaging allegations about the candidate before the 2016 presidential election. AMI further admitted that its principal purpose in making the payment was to suppress the woman’s story so as to prevent it from influencing the election.”

Last month, federal prosecutors said they had “effectively concluded” their investigation into the Trump Organization and indicated that no additional charges would be filed.

The U.S. Navy commander in charge of all SEAL teams told his men “we have a problem” in a memo written late last month after a series of scandals rocked the Naval Special Warfare community.

“Some of our subordinate formations have failed to maintain good order and discipline and as a result and for good reason, our NSW [Naval Special Warefare] culture is being questioned,” Rear Adm. Collin Green wrote in the July 25 memo obtained by Fox News Thursday.

Green added that while “I don’t know yet if we have a culture problem, I do know that we have a good order and discipline problem that must be addressed immediately. Good order and discipline is the foundation for every military organization and it is a leadership responsibility. As Commander, I own it. As Commodores, you also own it.”

The letter was written the day after reports surfaced that a Navy SEAL platoon from San Diego, Calif., was ordered back to the U.S. from Iraq because of a “deterioration of good order and discipline.”

The U.S. Special Operations Command said in a July 24 statement, “The Commander lost confidence in the team’s ability to accomplish the mission.”

The statement did not describe the exact nature of the misconduct, but The Washington Post, citing two defense officials, told the newspaper that the SEALs involved in the incident had violated a general order against the use of alcohol.

The platoon that was ordered back to the U.S. is part of SEAL Team 7, whose members included Chief Eddie Gallagher, who was acquitted of war crimes charges last month but convicted of posing with a dead ISIS fighter, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Testimony during Gallagher’s court-martial revealed that members of SEAL Team 7’s Alpha Platoon routinely consumed alcohol during their 2017 deployment to Iraq, according to The Military Times.

NAVY SEAL EDWARD GALLAGHER FOUND NOT GUILTY ON MURDER AND ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES

The same week the platoon was ordered back to the U.S, The Navy Times reported, citing an internal investigation, that six members of a Virginia-based SEAL team tested positive for cocaine use “and other banned substances” last year after repeatedly cheating to get around military drug tests.

Meanwhile, a Navy SEAL Team 6 member who was named Sailor of the Year in 2016 has been charged with impersonating other people via text to get nude pictures of women, the Virginian-Pilot reported last week.

In May, a Navy SEAL pleaded guilty in the hazing death of a Green Beret soldier, admitting to taking part in a late-night plot to break into 34-year-old Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar’s room with a sledgehammer, put him in a chokehold and restrain him with duct tape during a deployment in Africa.

Chief Special Warfare Operator Adam Matthews said that he, along with another member of the Navy’s SEAL Team 6 and two elite Marine Raiders, carried out the “juvenile” attack on June 4, 2017, in Bamako, Mali.

Matthews’ attorney, Grover Baxley, said Melgar’s death was “an unforeseen accident that has dramatically impacted the lives of everyone involved.”

According to The Washington Post, the tragedy occurred after a long night of drinking and partying. Two SEALs and two Marine Raiders smashed their way into Melgar’s room with a sledgehammer because they purportedly wanted to teach him a lesson for leaving them behind in traffic on the way to a party at the French embassy.

One of the SEALs jumped on Melgar and put him in a chokehold while Matthews grabbed Melgar’s legs. The two Marines then duct-taped his legs together. When they moved on to Melgar’s wrists, they realized he had stopped breathing.

Truck driver in New Hampshire crash that killed 7 bikers was on drugs, report says

A Massachusetts truck driver who has been charged with negligent homicide in a June crash that killed seven motorcyclists in New Hampshire was on drugs and reaching for a beverage just before the tragedy, The Boston Globe reported Thursday.

The Globe, citing a report by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, said that Volodymyr Zhukovskyy, 23, tested positive for an unspecified drug when his pickup truck crossed the yellow center line of U.S. Route 2 and hit the motorcyclists on the evening of June 21 in Randolph, N.H. Zhukovskyy also admitted to reaching for a drink just before the crash, but did not specify what kind of beverage.

Zhukovskyy, of West Springfield, Mass. has pleaded not guilty and remains behind bars. The seven victims were members of the Jarheads Motorcycle Club, a New England group made up of Marines and their spouses.

Zhukovskyy and his lawyer have yet to comment on the matter.

Since the crash, it has emerged that Zhukovskyy had multiple run-ins with the law.

In May, Connecticut prosecutors said Zhukovskyy was arrested in a Walmart parking lot after failing a sobriety test. Zhukovskyy’s lawyer in that case, John O’Brien, said he denies being intoxicated and will fight the charge.

Connecticut officials twice alerted Massachusetts about an earlier drunken driving arrest. Massachusetts investigators later determined the Registry of Motor Vehicles hadn’t been acting on thousands of out-of-state notifications about serious driving violations. The commonwealth’s registrar of motor vehicles, Erin Deveney, resigned in late June after the lapse was made public.

Westfield Transport, the company that Zhukovskyy was driving for on the day of June 21 crash also has a troubled history.

According to an Associated Press analysis of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration data, Westfield Transport Inc. faced over 60 violations over the last 24 months.

About one in five inspections of its vehicles ended with federal investigators issuing temporary orders saying the carrier was not authorized to operate. The company’s out-of-service rate is 20.8 percent — a figure nearly four times greater than the national average of 5.5 percent.

Federal records show the company has faced seven violations for unsafe driving, including speeding. The company also faced two violations in March 2018, reported in Massachusetts and Vermont, of drivers who were in possession of a narcotic drug or amphetamine.

“The Navy mourns the loss of one of our own and our thoughts go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy,” the U.S. Naval Air Forces said in a statement.

F-16 FIGHTER JET CRASHES WHILE TRYING TO LAND AT CALIFORNIA BASE, 12 MINOR INJURIES REPORTED

The single-seat jet crashed Wednesday morning during low-level flying in what was described as routine training

The crash injured seven people who were at a scenic overlook in Death Valley National Park where aviation enthusiasts routinely watch military aircraft speeding low through a chasm dubbed “Star Wars Canyon.” The lookout point about 160 miles north of Los Angeles is popular with photographers and aviation buffs who gawk at jets flying in the steep, narrow canyon.

Officials closed the area after the crash. Park spokesman Patrick Taylor said initial reports were that the injuries were minor.

The crash sent dark smoke billowing in the air, said Aaron Cassell, who was working at his family’s Panamint Springs Resort about 10 miles away and was the first to report the crash to park dispatch.

“I just saw a black mushroom cloud go up,” Cassell told The Associated Press. “Typically you don’t see a mushroom cloud in the desert.”

Cassell said he heard jets roaring through the area and then saw the cloud of smoke.

“It looked like a bomb,” Cassell said. “To me that speaks of a very violent impact.”

A jet that was following the downed craft pulled up and began circling, Cassell said. He didn’t see any parachute.

His father drove up to the area after the crash and saw a large black scorch mark and shattered parts of the jet scattered throughout the area between the parking lot and lookout, Cassell said. A nose cone from the jet was the size of a bowling ball and the rest of the debris was no larger than a ball cap.
