Indiana woman, 19, killed after backseat passenger fires AR-15-style rifle in car, police say

An Indiana woman was shot and killed last week while driving her car, allegedly by a passenger who police say fired an AR-15-style rifle while he was sitting behind her in her vehicle.

Annalysa McMillan, 19, was driving three people — including Austin Mark Smith, 22 — around Marion on Tuesday when she died, investigators said.

CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION OFFICER ACCUSED OF KILLING WIFE ON THANKSGIVING

Just before 6 p.m., authorities responded to the scene when they discovered McMillian unresponsive in her car, the Marion Police Department said in a news release. Officials tried resuscitating her until she was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

McMillan was shot once with a bullet from an AR-15-style rifle, police said. Smith, who was sitting in the backseat on the driver’s side of the car behind her, “was in possession” of the weapon when it discharged.

“The projectile entered and exited the driver’s seat and struck Annalysa in her back,” investigators wrote. Her cause of death was due to a gunshot wound to the back and was ruled a homicide.

The other two passengers McMillan was driving, ages 18 and 19, were not injured in the incident.

Mark Atkinson, lead pastor of Eastview Wesleyan Church in Gas City, where McMillan was from, told WXIN McMillan had just celebrated her birthday five days prior to her death. He said the woman’s last text message “to her stepfather was that she loved him and, those things are glued to hold tight when everything is trying to blow you apart.”

The pastor described McMillan as “an encouraging, bubbly young lady who had a bright future and was heading in the right direction.”

Smith was charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and reckless homicide, according to the police department. As of Sunday, he was being held in the Grant County Jail.

Virginia man arrested on Black Friday after being found naked in Kohl’s parking lot, police say

A Virginia man was arrested Friday after police say he was found sitting naked in a car in a North Carolina Kohl’s parking lot on America’s busiest shopping day of the year.

Tylik Shawdu Little, 28, was spotted after a patrolling officer smelled marijuana coming from a row of vehicles, the Knightdale Police Department said in a news release.

The officer ordered Little to put clothes on and exit the vehicle, but he instead tried to escape by driving behind and between nearby buildings, according to authorities. He was stopped a short distance away and taken into custody, wearing pants and a shirt.

“This sort of public behavior on the busiest shopping day of the year is particularly appalling,” said Police Chief Lawrence Capps. “We are glad no citizens were adversely impacted and pleased that our emphasis on proactive patrols paid off in this instance.”

Despite the area being packed with Black Friday shoppers, authorities said they believed that only the officer saw Little’s lewd behavior. No passersby or store patrons had reported Little, whose motives weren’t immediately known, police said.

Washington movie theater evacuated after ‘highly contagious’ package of urine sent to wrong address

A movie theater in Washington state resembled a scene out of a disaster flick on Friday night after a box with a dire warning was left outside the building, triggering an evacuation after urine samples were sent to the wrong address.

The incident happened around 5:15 p.m. at the North Bend Theater in the town of North Bend, located around 30 miles east of Seattle.

The Eastside Professional Firefighters said on Twitter that first responders converged on the theater for a hazmat call with a box marked “highly contagious human substance” that had been opened up.

A total of five hazmat techs arrived at the theater to analyze the package as the building was evacuated and nearby streets were closed as authorities tried to determine what was inside the package, according to fire officials.

Snoqualmie Police Sgt. Paul Graham told KOMO News the theater manager opened up the package and discovered the liquid inside. The manager was then taken to an area hospital as a precaution due to regular exposure protocol.

Eastside Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Richard Burke told the Seattle Times the person didn’t show signs of illness but went to the hospital as a precaution, as officials weren’t sure what was in the box.

Tests of the liquid later revealed it to be urine that was “disposed of appropriately in a bio container,” fire officials told KOMO.

“All is well,” the theater said Saturday on its website. “The emergency vehicles you may have seen in front of the theatre on Friday, November 29, were there in response to our call regarding a mislabeled package that was leaking an unknown liquid.”

The theater praised the “professionalism” of Eastside Fire and Rescue and the Snoqualmie Police Department, saying there was no danger and they would open for business on Saturday to show “Frozen II.”

Customs and Border Protection officer accused of killing wife on Thanksgiving

A Customs and Border Protection officer was arrested in the murder of his wife, also a CBP employee, who was killed in their Texas home on Thanksgiving, police said.

Dudley Bernard, 40, was taken into custody in the front yard of his League City property Thursday night after his wife, 42-year-old Chauntelle Bernard was found dead, according to the local police department.

Whistleblower in New Orleans hotel collapse is deported to Honduras, lawyers say

A Honduran construction worker who attempted to warn about unsafe conditions prior to last month’s deadly partial collapse of the Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans was deported by U.S. immigration authorities on Friday, his lawyers confirmed.

Delmer Joel Ramirez Palma was arrested by immigration officials two days after the 18-story hotel fell onto a busy downtown intersection on Oct. 12, killing three people and injuring dozens.

He managed to survive the collapse after falling from the ninth to the sixth floor by swinging from a rope, according to The Guardian.

Workers begin the process of preparing the two unstable cranes for implosion at the collapse site of the Hard Rock Hotel, which underwent a partial, major collapse while under construction last Sat., Oct., 12, in New Orleans, Friday, Oct. 18, 2019. Plans have been pushed back a day to bring down two giant, unstable construction cranes in a series of controlled explosions before they can topple onto historic New Orleans buildings, the city’s fire chief said Friday, noting the risky work involved in placing explosive on the towers. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

He was hospitalized with serious injuries, including head trauma, an acute eye injury and internal inflammation, according to his wife and lawyers.

Following the incident, Ramirez Pena was interviewed by a Spanish-language media outlet. Two days later, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested him while he was fishing with his family at a wildlife refuge, according to reports.

They moved him to an immigration holding facility at the Alexandria International Airport in central Louisiana last week, as ICE agents prepared to deport him.

His attorneys argued that because Ramirez Palma was outspoken about the unsafe conditions, deporting him could have impacted the investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration into what caused the collapse.

They said undocumented immigrants are usually hesitant to talk with federal investigators about what happened due to fear of deportation.

“I am sure the Hispanic workers there [at Hard Rock] don’t want to cooperate for the same reason. They are scared the same thing that happened to Joel can happen to them,” his wife, Tania Bueso, told Nola.com.

Some of the safety concerns he attempted to shed light on included asymmetrical building measurements and uncured concrete that couldn’t support enough weight, his lawyers and wife say.

“He talks about how this disaster could have been avoided if they had paid more attention when they could see — clearly — that the building, in some areas, wasn’t right,” Bueso told the outlet. “When he used the laser [measurement tool], he also said he had to check two or three times to make sure the measurement was right because the building was so imbalanced.”

Ramirez Palma was ordered to be deported in 2016 and he lacks legal authorization to work in the U.S. He filed a stay of deportation earlier this year.

A letter addressed to William Joyce, the New Orleans field office director of ICE, on Nov. 27 urged the agency to release Ramirez Palma.

“In the aftermath of a disaster of this scale, the public needs all available information to understand what happened at the worksite, including information from Mr. Ramirez Palma and workers like him who witnessed safety violations before the collapse,” wrote Ava Dejoie, the secretary of the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC), per The Guardian. “If he is deported, the public may never know what key information is being deported with him. The investigations will undoubtedly suffer.”
