Suspect held after auto-shop shooting leaves 2 dead

A Florida man was being held on $100,000 bond Thursday night after a shooting at an auto body shop that left two men dead.

One victim was a brother of the suspect while the other was a mechanic who worked at the Pembroke Park shop, the Miami Herald reported.

The suspect and another brother were wounded in the shooting, the report said.

The suspect, identified as Jemar Reid, 22, had shown up at the shop with several other people around 8:30 p.m. Thursday to confront the mechanic for an unspecified reason, the newspaper reported.

An argument broke out and led to gunfire.

Much of the arrest warrant for Reid has been redacted, so many of the details of the case remain unknown, the Herald reported. Reid was charged with manslaughter, the report said.

The mechanic was identified as Dwayne Lynch, 31.

After the shooting, Reid and his two brothers drove to a Broward Sheriff’s Office substation, where deputies applied first aid and contacted paramedics, South Florida’s WTVJ-TV reported.

The brothers were then taken to a hospital, where one of them died, according to the station.

Trump accuses Dems of creating ‘phony crime’; Dems at crossroads on impeachment

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know as you start your day …

Fox News exclusive: Trump accuses Dems of creating a ‘phony crime,’ calls Mueller investigation a ‘treason’ and ‘high crime’
Following former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, President Trump accused Democrats of creating a “phony crime” by alleging he committed obstruction of justice in the Russia investigation. “I didn’t do it. They create a phony crime,” Trump said during an exclusive interview Thursday night with Sean Hannity. “And then, they say, ‘He obstructed.’ They said there was no collusion but ‘He obstructed,’ and there has never been anything like this ever in this country.” During the interview, Trump reiterated his desire to “investigate the investigators” over the origins of the Russia probe and said Attorney General William Barr would be “looking into it.” Though Mueller’s probe did not reach a conclusion of whether Trump committed a crime, the president is no fan of the investigation, calling it a high crime, treason and a “disgrace to our country.” Click on the video above and watch the interview.

Dems at crossroads on Trump impeachment push; Pelosi to meet with AOC as she struggles to bridge party divide
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday warned congressional Democrats who support impeachment proceedings against President Trump not to “disparage” colleagues who don’t, a source familiar with the conversation told Fox News. Pelosi’s guidance came on the heels of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s rocky testimony, which left in doubt the future of the effort to oust Trump. Pelosi, for her part, mostly has resisted impeachment pressure from the start. In recent weeks, the lawmaker from San Francisco has been trying to tamp down the infighting in the caucus between far-left and more moderate elements of the party. As part of that effort, she is set to meet Friday with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. (The freshman lawmaker’s chief of staff is among the Hill figures who’ve been antagonizing centrist Democrats.)

However, Pelosi still suspects Trump has been compromised by Russia. She told a “Tucker Carlson Tonight” producer that she wonders what Putin has on Trump “politically, financially, or personally.”

House approves Trump-backed budget and debt limit package
House lawmakers on Thursday approved a budget and debt deal that President Trump had endorsed, although most Republicans voted against the package. While not funding the government, the measure would stave off another government shutdown by permitting the Treasury to borrow freely to pay the government’s bills and solidify recent budget gains for military and domestic programs. The measure would tackle two big items on Washington’s agenda: increasing the debt limit through 2021, thus averting a default on U.S. payments, and setting overall spending limits to prevent $125 billion in automatic spending cuts from hitting military and domestic programs, with 10 percent cuts beginning in January.

Ocasio-Cortez supports ‘decolonization process’ of Puerto Rico after governor’s resignation
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., expressed support for the “decolonization process” of Puerto Rico following the announced resignation of its embattled governor, Ricardo Rosselló. In an Instagram livestream on Thursday night, Ocasio-Cortez took questions from her followers. The first asked how she felt about what’s happening in Puerto Rico. Ocasio-Cortez, who is of Puerto Rican descent, suggested that the U.S. commonwealth become independent. “I’m really proud of everyone that’s out there, but of course there’s a lot of work to be done,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “This is just the beginning of a decolonization process, a process of self-determination where the people of Puerto Rico begin to start taking their own self-governance into their own hands.”

Frat boys could face federal charges after posing with guns at Emmitt Till memorial

U.S. Coast Guard personnel based out of San Diego, Calif., intercepted a small motorboat with approximately 2,300 pounds of cocaine onboard earlier this month in international waters of the Pacific Ocean.

In a dramatic video released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, people aboard the motorboat can be seen tossing items into the open ocean as they’re being pursued — and filmed from above.

The video captures the moment that Coast Guard members in an orange boat catch up with the suspects’ vessel. Then, with their guns drawn, the Coast Guard members force nine suspected smugglers to surrender with their hands in the air.

A customer at a 7-Eleven store in Virginia shot two suspects who were allegedly trying to rob the business early Thursday morning, police said, according to reports.

The customer killed one of the suspects and injured the other during the 2 a.m. attempted robbery in Virginia Beach, Richmond’s WTVR-TV reported. Both suspects were also armed, according to the report.

The customer, whom witnesses called a “hero,” had a concealed carry permit, police said, according to Norfolk’s WTKR-TV.

Fred Pepperman’s 16-year-old daughter got caught in a riptide while the family was vacationing near Panama City in the Florida panhandle, People reported.

LOUISIANA TEEN, 19, DIES DAYS AFTER BEING PULLED UNDER BY RIP CURRENT AT FLORIDA BEACH

His two adult daughters attempted to save their younger sibling and also became trapped in the rough water, reports said. Pepperman then jumped in to rescue them.

A family member joined the 53-year-old and swam out with a board. They recovered the girls. Pepperman lost consciousness after the rescue.

Bystanders attempted CPR and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to People.

“He did everything a dad is supposed to do,” his wife Julie Pepperman told WTSP in Florida.

The incident happened the weekend of Tropical Storm Barry and the South Walton Fire District had posted double-red flag conditions at the beaches, meaning strong rip currents and rough surf, WTSP reported.

“Without him, three of mine definitely would be gone. It doesn’t seem real, Julie said. “I just want people to know a lot of dads say they would do it, and he did it, so that’s a dad.”

Gun-toting frat brothers pose in front of Emmett Till memorial, may face federal charges

Three fraternity brothers at the University of Mississippi have been suspended — and are possibly facing federal charges — for taking a photo in front of a bullet-riddled sign honoring slain civil rights icon Emmett Till while holding a shotgun and AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

“The photo is on Instagram with hundreds of ‘likes,’ and no one said a thing,” says a complaint filed with the UM Office of Student Conduct.

The Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting, which is a member of the ProPublica Local Reporting Network, reviewed the complaint and obtained a copy of the picture in question, which was taken earlier this year.

<br data-cke-eol=”1″> Three Ole Miss students have been suspended for this photo. (Instagram/Mississippi Center For Investigative Reporting)

Ole Miss student and Kappa Alpha Order member Ben LeClere posted it on his private page in March and is reportedly the one holding a shotgun.

Two of his fraternity brothers, John Lowe and another young man who has yet to be identified, can be seen posing alongside him — the latter of whom is toting the AR-15.

A fourth person, said to be the photographer, may have also been with the trio, the complaint says.

KA officials reportedly suspended LeClere, Lowe and the other man on Wednesday after the photo was brought to their attention by the Center for Investigative Reporting.

PUERTO RICO’S GOVERNOR TO RESIGN AMID PROTESTS OVER LEAKED OBSCENE ONLINE CHATS

“The photo is inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable. It does not represent our chapter,” said Taylor Anderson, president of Ole Miss’ Kappa Alpha Order, in an email to the center. “We have and will continue to be in communication with our national organization and the University.”

US Attorney Chad Lamar, of the Northern District of Mississippi in Oxford, was also shown the image and chose to refer it to the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division for further investigation.

“We will be working with them closely,” he said Thursday.

Ole Miss officials condemned the students’ actions, calling the photo “offensive and hurtful.” They claimed to have received a copy of it back in March, which they forwarded and referred to university police — who then gave it to the FBI.

University spokesman Rod Guajardo told the Center for Investigative Reporting that the FBI decided to not investigate the incident because the picture “did not pose a specific threat.”

He pointed out how while the image may be “offensive,” it’s not a violation of the Ole Miss code of conduct — since it was taken off campus and not at a university-affiliated event.

However, the school “stands ready to assist the fraternity with educational opportunities for those members and the chapter,” Guajardo said.

The Emmett Till sign that was captured in the photo has been targeted several times since being erected in 2008.

Vandals reportedly threw the first site marker into the nearby Tallahatchie River — where Till’s body was dumped after his 1955 lynching. The second was shot up repeatedly, with officials estimating that it got blasted more than 315 times before finally being removed and replaced in 2016.

The third and most recent sign, which was captured in the IG photo, had to be taken down last week after being riddled once again with bullet holes. It’s unclear if LeClere, Lowe and the other young man were responsible.

The fraternity brothers are just the latest Ole Miss students to come under fire for incidents involving civil rights icons.

A trio of Sigma Phi Epsilon members got hit with federal charges several years ago after they placed a noose around the neck of a James Meredith statue, along with a Confederate flag.

Meredith was the first known black student to attend Ole Miss.

One of the fraternity members pleaded guilty and received six months in prison for “using a threat to intimidate African American students and employees because of their race or color,” according to the Center for Investigative Reporting.

All of them wound up withdrawing from the university. The school’s Sigma Phi chapter was later shuttered following an internal investigation.

“Hazing, underage drinking, alcohol abuse and failure to comply with the university and fraternity’s codes of conduct” were the reasons given as to why the fraternity’s national headquarters was closing the chapter.

A man was hospitalized after he tried to save his son who slipped on rocks and into the river at a park in Washington, with the current sweeping both of them down a 15-foot waterfall.

Robert Brown, of Vancouver, Wash., said he jumped into the water at Lucia Falls Regional Park this past Sunday after his 12-year-old son, Michael, slipped into the Lewis River and the current swept him toward the falls.

Robert described the moments before the fall to Fox 12 in Oregon saying, “We saw some kid jumping off the side of the rocks and I said, ‘Michael,’ I said ‘that’s how accidents happen right there,’ and we end up being the accident.”

He told the station that while they were showing the area to family members who were visiting from out of town, his son asked if he could walk across some rocks which were upstream of the falls.

“He wanted to go ahead and cross over at that point,” Robert told the station. “I was good with that.”

“In the process [he] slipped on a rock,” he continued.

Michael fell into the water and the river’s strong current then pushed him in the direction of the waterfalls.

Robert told the station he tried to grab his son but was unsuccessful.

“When I was going down, I tried to grab on to some rocks, but I couldn’t because it was covered in moss and algae and stuff,” Michael told Fox 12.

“That’s when he went underwater and wasn’t coming back up immediately,” Robert said. “So, I had my cell phone on me, just ditched it and just dove right in to get him.”

ARMED MAN SHOT, KILLED AFTER THROWING INCENDIARY DEVICES AT WASHINGTON ICE DETENTION CENTER

Robert told the station he tried to save his son when they were in the fast-moving water but they could not connect. They both ultimately fell down the 15-foot waterfall.

Fortunately, the son was able to make it to shore and reportedly suffered just a bruise on his arm.

His father, the station reported, was hospitalized with a broken neck and had a deep cut above his eye.

His wife, Amy, who had watched the situation unfold, told the station, “It is absolutely a miracle that these two came out over a waterfall and came out alive.”

“It’s a grace of God that I’m here,” Robert told Fox 12.

Los Angeles police released new surveillance video on Wednesday in a bid to crack the case of a brutal beating and robbery that took place in January.

Authorities say the male victim was walking with two women through the parking lot of a hotel on Sepulveda Boulevard in Van Nuys early on the morning of Jan. 18.

As the group was walking through the lot, one of the women motioned with her hands to a man who was nearby. The man, who was wearing what appeared to be a brown or orange hooded jacket, dark pants and white tennis shoes, attacked the victim from behind with a wooden baseball bat, striking him multiple times in the head.

The victim fell to the ground unconscious but the suspect continued to beat the man, striking him repeatedly in the face with the bat until one of the women appeared to intervene.

The suspect then walked to a nearby vehicle, discarded the bat, then returned to where the victim had collapsed and stole the man’s wallet and cellphone from his pockets. All three suspects then fled the scene, police said.

Police suspect the women lured the victim to that location.

“He thought he was going to have sex, but the girls lured him out to get some beer, and that’s when, you see in the video, the female motioned for the suspect to come in for the robbery,” LAPD Detective Peter Barba told KABC.

The man allegedly met the women through a social media dating site, according to KNBC.
