New York prosecutors are gearing up Friday to announce criminal charges against nearly 100 members and associates of MS-13 in what reportedly is the largest crackdown against the gang in the state’s history.

The charges come following a two-year investigation involving law enforcement from the local to the federal level in Suffolk County, one of the gangs’ longtime hotbeds, according to ABC 7.

The probe also has foiled seven alleged murder plots, the station adds.

MS-13, also known as Mara Salvatrucha, recruits young teenagers from El Salvador and Honduras, though many gang members were born in the U.S. The gang has been blamed for dozens of killings since January 2016 across a wide swath of New York’s Long Island – where Suffolk County is — the Los Angeles area and the D.C. suburbs.

MS-13 also has been singled out by President Trump for its brutality, which has led to a series of crackdowns by law enforcement.

A homeless man in Mississippi made deputies arrest him because he wanted to get out of the cold.

It happened in Natchez, Miss., Thursday morning, according to Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten, who said the incident underscored the need for greater resources to aid the area’s homeless.

Patten said the man showed up at his office and asked deputies if he could be jailed because it was too cold outside, according to the Natchez Democrat.

He said the deputies told the man they couldn’t do that for liability reasons and the man then told them, “I will make you lock me up then,” according to the paper.

After that exchange, the man then broke windows in the courthouse across the street and in the sheriff’s office.

He was charged with vandalism. His name wasn’t released.

“If there was a shelter he would not have to have committed a crime to have been able to get out of the cold and could have also had a hot meal,” Patten told the paper.

Texas deputies, in dramatic video, free trapped driver from burning car

Police in Texas released a dramatic video showing officers banding together to rescue a trapped driver before his car became engulfed in flames.

The 20-year-old man’s foot became stuck in his mangled vehicle after he fell asleep behind the wheel on the morning of Dec. 8 and crashed into a tree in Houston, the Harris County Constable’s Office said.

“We might have to break your leg bro, I’m sorry,” an officer is heard telling the driver as others are using extinguishers to stop a raging fire from consuming the vehicle.

“No, no no no no. You can’t pull it back?” the panicked driver responds.

An officer is seen trying to free it – to little avail — with the help of a pry bar.

“My leg! My leg!” the man is heard screaming in pain at one point in the footage.

He eventually is freed as the blaze enters the area of the driver’s seat.

“We got him out just in time. So what happened was, his pants were stuck, I cut his pants and that’s what freed his leg out,” an officer says in the video as the sounds of an ambulance can be heard in the background.

The Constable’s Office says the man suffered several broken bones and is currently recovering from surgery at a local hospital. A few deputies, it added, suffered superficial burns and singed hair.

“These deputies showed incredible courage as they worked together to save this man’s life,” Constable Ted Heap said. “You never know, until you find yourself in a situation like this, how you’ll react. The way they responded under extremely stressful and dangerous conditions makes me proud to wear the same Precinct 5 badge.”

At the end of the video, an officer says to the man: “You are serving a purpose on this land dude, God was with you tonight, you understand that?”

“Yes,” he replies.

Third tunnel found under US-Mexico border in Arizona town

Two Mexican nationals were arrested in Arizona this week after a third tunnel – providing a hidden passageway underneath the U.S.-Mexico border – was found in the town of Nogales this month, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement Thursday.

MEXICAN MS-13 GANG MEMBER ARRESTED CROSSING BORDER INTO ARIZONA, WAS PREVIOUSLY DEPORTED

ICE agents found the 82-foot long, 8-foot deep tunnel Tuesday while carrying out a search warrant on a home in Nogales, Ariz., the statement said. About 200 pounds of meth, two pounds of white heroin, three pounds of cocaine and six-and-a-half pounds of fentanyl were also found during the raid. The two Mexican nationals — Jovany Robledo-Delgado and Jesus Martinez Selgado – were arrested and charged with possession and conspiracy to distribute hard narcotics. They both appeared in U.S. federal court Wednesday.

The tunnel runs from the Arizona home to the entry of a sewage pipeline called the International Outfall Interceptor (IOI). The IOI transports millions of gallons of sewage water a day from the sister cities of Nogales – one in Mexico, Sonora, the other across the international boundary in Arizona – to a treatment plant in Rio Rico, Ariz., Fox 10 Phoenix reported.

Officials also found a stash that included 200 pounds of meth, two pounds of heroin, three pounds of cocaine and 6.5 pounds of fentanyl. (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement)

Tunnels can be used by Mexican cartel members to transport narcotics across the border. Migrants also have reportedly used tunnels to try to enter the U.S. illegally, surpassing designated ports of entry.

Officials believe the tunnel had been there for at least a few months. They carried out the search warrant on the home after receiving an anonymous tip about drug smuggling through the IOI, Phoenix’s KTVK-TV reported. It was the third discovered in Nogales  during December.

On Dec. 4, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents and Mexican police found an incomplete tunnel under the streets during a routine sweep of a stormwater drainage system that serves the sister cities of Nogales on both sides of the border, Fox 10 reported.

It ran about 10-feet underground for about 20 feet into the U.S. from the Mexican side of the border. It was about three-feet wide and four-feet tall. Agents found its entrance in the floor of an existing drainage system tunnel – the opening blocked off by dirt and a mixture of Styrofoam and concrete. No people or drugs were found inside.

Some 50 yards away – a second was found on Dec. 10. CBP agents apprehended four migrants after spotting them on surveillance camera attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border, according to Fox 10. While retracing the migrant’s journey, agents located the tunnel about 5 feet north of the International Boundary Fence. Mexican police later located the entrance to the tunnel on the other side of the fence. It stretched about 10-feet below ground.

A California man who asked a caricaturist to draw his portrait ended up allegedly stealing money from the artist, who gave police the cartoon-like drawing in hopes it would catch the thief.

The alleged theft occurred around 11:50 p.m. during the Festival of Lights event in downtown Riverside, on Dec. 5.

The suspect had asked the artist for a portrait of himself, but just as the caricaturist had finished, the suspect grabbed the artist’s money bag containing roughly $500 and fled on foot — leaving the drawing behind.

The Riverside Police Department posted a photo of the drawing on its Facebook page, seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspect.

“DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS CARICATURE? And no, we are not kidding,” police said.

The suspect was described as a black male in his early 20s, about 5 feet 1 inch tall with an average build, black hair, and mustache. Police said he was last seen wearing a blue and red jacket, white undershirt, black pants, and a red hat.

Utah woman sought to buy ‘biological weapon of mass destruction,’ authorities say

A Utah woman has been arrested for investigation of possessing a biological weapon of mass destruction, reports say.

Janie Lynn Ridd, 50, was taken into custody Wednesday following an investigation by both federal and state authorities, as well as the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Neither the FBI nor the State Bureau of Investigations would release details of her arrest as of Thursday, but they added there was no safety risk to the public.

After becoming aware of her intent to purchase the unspecified agent, officials were able to monitor her activity before arresting her. Federal and state authorities also wouldn’t say what Ridd was looking to buy, but more information will be given when formal charges are filed, according to Salt Lake City’s Deseret News.

“Through an investigation, officers learned a subject later identified as Janie Lynn Ridd purchased a weapon of mass destruction,” the affidavit said, according to the outlet.

“Subsequent investigation found Ridd’s statements to be misleading and it was learned Ridd did not provide evidence to show she has lawful authority or use to possess a biological agent.”

Police said on Thursday that the public shouldn’t be alarmed because they don’t believe Ridd was ever a threat — before or after her arrest.

“Law enforcement officials became aware of Ridd attempting to purchase a possible biological agent. They were able to safely monitor Ridd’s activity. After which, Ridd was arrested. There was never a threat to the general public prior to, or after, Ridd’s arrest,” the Utah Department of Public Safety said in a statement, according to Salt Lake City’s KTVX-TV.

Utah Code describes a “biological agent” as any “microorganism, virus, infectious substance, or biological product that may be engineered as a result of biotechnology, or any naturally occurring or bioengineered component of any microorganism, virus, infectious substance, or biological product, that is capable of causing death, disease, or other biological malfunction in a human, an animal, a plant, or another living organism.”

Florida suspect in shooting of police captain is tracked down, killed in standoff

A Florida man on the run after shooting a police captain near a gas station in Eustis was shot and killed following a gun battle Thursday evening, authorities said.

Jayson Colvin, 38, was tracked by several law enforcement officers, including a SWAT team that found him in a wooded area near where he was accused of shooting Eustis police Capt. Gary Winheim.

A sheriff’s helicopter saw Colvin hiding under a canoe near a lake, where they said he tried to escape as the SWAT team approached. Police officers eventually saw Colvin and ordered him to put down his weapon.

“He failed to comply with the SWAT team’s demands and the subject is now deceased,” said Grinnell, according to Tampa’s FOX 13. “Multiple deputies opened fire on the individual.”

Earlier in the day, the Eustis Police Department said shots were originally fired around 12:15 p.m. near State Road 19 at County Road 44, authorities told the outlet.

Winheim was near a gas station around that time when he reported hearing gunshots. Police Chief Gary Calhoun said Winheim saw Colvin speed away from the station before he pulled up behind the suspect in an unmarked pickup truck. Colvin then fired at Winheim, hitting him in the neck and lodging a bullet in his back, Calhoun said.

“Another millimeter or so in another direction and it could have been a lot worse,” said Calhoun, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

PARKLAND SCHOOL SHOOTING TRIAL PUSHED BACK MONTHS FROM PLANNED JANUARY START

After Winheim was shot, local residents reported seeing a massive police presence flying by on the streets of Eustis.

Nearly 500 officers from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies participated in the search for Colvin, including police from Mount Dora, Umatilla and the Florida Highway Patrol, the outlet reported.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating and Winheim was expected to make a full recovery.

Colvin had reportedly been sentenced to state prison four times since 2000, for various crimes including armed burglary, grand theft with a firearm, grand theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing law enforcement, false imprisonment, grand theft of a motor vehicle and kidnapping, according to the Sentinel.

At least two people were presumed dead Thursday morning after a “violent” house explosion and subsequent fire rocked a number of homes in South Philadelphia, according to fire officials.

The explosion leveled three houses and significantly damaged two others around 11:36 a.m. at South 8th and South Franklin streets. Sixty people on the block were evacuated as nearly 120 firefighters battled the raging fires for hours.

“We believe now that we have pretty good confidence that there are two people who are missing and presumably deceased,” Fire Commissioner Adam Theil said.

Rescuers were still putting out “pockets of fire” in the burning homes, which were under control just before 3 p.m., Philadelphia’s FOX 29 reported. Theil said the charred buildings were too structurally unstable “to put anyone else in there” as day turned to night.

Everyone in the affected homes was reportedly accounted for, but Theil didn’t rule out the possibility that additional people may have been trapped in the rubble after walking by on the street when the explosion occurred.

“Don’t know what’s in the debris field,” he said at a news conference Thursday night. “We’re not giving up. We don’t ever give up.”

Theil added that the “herculean” rescue efforts would start up again at first light Friday to remove the debris in the area and search for additional people who may be trapped underneath.

The explosion, described as “a firestorm,” sent plumes of smoke that could be seen for miles, as wind gusts reached 20 miles an hour.

A Connecticut man has been charged with attempting to provide support to ISIS after allegedly pledging allegiance to the terror group’s leaders in Syria, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

Kevin McCormick, 26, of Hamden, was charged with “attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization,” according to the Department of Justice.

He was arrested Oct. 21, before a federal grand jury indicted him Oct. 30. McCormick made several bizarre statements in court, as he lavished praise on Islam and shared a desire to travel to Syria so he could join the group, authorities said.

“I gotta fight, bro,” he reportedly said. “Because those people, Abu Masa and ISIL, they fought for me, bro. I know it, I can feel it, in my heart. So it’s my time to fight … It just is what it is, bro. It’s just my, it’s just my time to go, bro.”

After being asked to explain his desired travel destination, authorities said, McCormick responded: “I don’t know, I don’t know, bro. It’s gotta be, like, Syria. Where ISIL is at. … Whichever place is easiest, whichever place I can get there the fastest, the quickest, the easiest, and where I can have a rifle and I can have some people, bro.

“That’s what I need,” he continued. “I need a rifle and I need some people, I need Islamic law, I need, that’s what I need, because if I have these things, it’s going to be very hard to kill me.”

McCormick was accused of attempting to board a flight to Jamaica to flee the country Oct. 12 but was stopped by personnel from the Department of Homeland Security before he could get on board, the Justice Department said.

McCormick is also alleged to have made a video pledging his allegiance to ISIS and its leader, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, who was killed in a U.S.-led operation Oct. 26.

The case was still being investigated by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) along with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Earlier this week, authorities arrested a West Haven man on similar charges.

Ahmad Khalil Elshazly, 22, was arrested Sunday in Stonington as he was about to board a boat to Syria, FOX 61 of Hartford reported. On Monday, federal investigators swarmed Elshazly’s neighborhood in search of evidence.

Elshazly also could face 20 years in prison, officials said.

A 52-year-old Minnesota woman was slammed against a car and dragged about 75 yards in a shopping center parking lot this week, becoming the latest victim in a string of purse snatchings that has prompted a search for suspects in the St. Paul area, according to a report.

“We really need to find these people before someone is more seriously injured and we need the public’s help,” St. Paul Police spokesman Steve Linders told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The incident was captured on security video that the St. Paul police posted on Facebook.

The style and method of the robbery were similar to more than 20 other incidents reported in St. Paul since Nov. 20, Linders said.

The woman was putting something in her car trunk after shopping at Hmong Village when one of the robbers jumped out of a stolen car, slammed her against his vehicle, grabbed her purse and returned to the car, the video showed.

As the suspect drove away, the woman fell to the ground and her arm became caught in the purse’s strap, Linders said.

The driver continued on, dragging the woman alongside the passenger side of the car, the newspaper reported. The unidentified woman suffered bumps and bruises but was not seriously injured.

There have also been recent alerts in Twin Cities suburbs about purse snatchings and St. Paul police are investigating whether those cases are connected to incidents in the city.

In the St. Paul robberies — including two Wednesday night — suspects sneak up on women from behind or approach them in stolen vehicles and jump out, the Pioneer Press reported.

They “surprise the unsuspecting victims by ripping purses or bags from their hands or shoulders,” Linders said.

Most of the women have been 40 or older, and the purses targeted are often expensive models, Linders said.

If victims resist, the suspects have struck or threatened them, sometimes with guns, according to Linders. After stealing the purses, the robbers escape on foot or in a stolen vehicle, the Pioneer Press reported.

In most cases, two or more suspects ages 15 to 30 have been seen. They’ve tried to hide their identities with hooded sweatshirts or hats, Linders said.
