Major power outages pop up from Michigan to New York amid dangerous heat wave

As the heat wave gripped much of the country on Sunday, power outages reported in multiple states left hundreds of thousands of customers in the dark.

Crews were working to restore power after heavy storms over two days knocked out power for more than 800,000 Michigan homes and businesses.

Two utilities said it could take until Wednesday to restore power for everyone.

Detroit-based DTE Energy said Sunday afternoon that roughly 600,000 customers were affected because of storms in southeast Michigan Friday and Saturday.

Officials said it’s the largest storm to hit the region in years.

Their estimate on outages grew throughout the day as crews worked. The weather downed more than 2,000 lines.

The utility said it had restored power to 250,000 customers and was expected to restore all power by Wednesday.

Jackson-based Consumers Energy said roughly 220,000 customers overall were affected. The utility said it hoped to restore power to everyone by Tuesday.

The utility said the storms downed more than 2,600 wires.

The National Weather Service reported high temperatures for July 20 were recorded Saturday at its weather stations in Atlantic City, N.J.; New York City; Westfield, Mass.’ Manchester, N.H.; and Wallops Island, Va.

From the Carolinas to Maine, daytime highs reached the upper 90s Sunday. Coupled with high humidity, temperatures felt as hot as 110 degrees Fahrenheit in places.

The New York Police Department implored residents to take it easy.

“Sunday has been canceled,” the NYPD jokingly tweeted. “Stay indoors, nothing to see here. Really, we got this.”

In New York City, where all eyes were on the power grid even before the hot weather following a Manhattan blackout last weekend, electricity company Con Ed reported roughly 12,000 scattered outages early Sunday evening, the vast majority in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens.

Inmates across the city were affected by these power outages: 3,700 inmates were without power at Brooklyn Detention Complex, and Otis Bantum Correctional Center on Rikers Island.

Con Ed asked customers in certain neighborhoods in southeast Brooklyn “to conserve energy while company crews work to repair equipment problems.” The utility also said it reduced voltage by 8 percent in those areas to maintain service as repairs were made.

The city also directed office buildings to set thermostats no lower than 78 degrees through Sunday to reduce strain on its electrical grid. A day earlier, a commemoration of the 1969 moon landing planned for Times Square and an outdoor festival featuring soccer star Megan Rapinoe and musician John Legend were nixed because of the heat.

A Florida sheriff’s deputy was killed in a crash while on his way to a reported domestic dispute early Sunday morning, officials said.

The deputy was responding to the call around 3 a.m. when his vehicle crashed with a Toyota Tundra at an intersection in Deerfield Beach, which is about 20 minutes from Fort Lauderdale, according to The Broward Sheriff’s Office.

In a Facebook post, the office said another deputy, who was heading to the domestic call in a separate vehicle, witnessed the crash and “immediately called for help.”

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue rushed the deputy and the only person who was in the pickup truck to a nearby hospital.

The deputy, who has not yet been identified, “succumbed to his injuries” and was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the Facebook post.

The driver of the pickup, also unidentified, was hospitalized in stable condition, according to The Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Traffic homicide detectives were investigating the cause of the crash.

“This morning our hearts are heavy. The Broward Sheriff’s Office family is grieving the loss of a #BSO deputy who died after being involved in an on-duty crash early Sunday morning. We ask for thoughts and prayers,” the Broward Sheriff’s Office tweeted.

The sheriff’s office saluted the deputy killed in the crash with a procession on Sunday morning, local media reported. A photograph on Twitter showed deputies lined up outside the hospital saluting a flag-draped casket.

Florida police departments offered condolences on Sunday. Miami-Dade Police tweeted, “Our hearts go out to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen deputy. #MDPD stands with you. #NeverForget

Puerto Rico governor announces he will not seek re-election but refuses to resign

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló announced Sunday he will not seek re-election but refused to resign, as corruption allegations have sparked widespread protests in San Juan.

Puerto Ricans have been calling for Rosselló’s resignation after leaked online chats showed the Democrat insulting women and political opponents as well as mocking victims of Hurricane Maria, one of the most devastating natural disasters to hit the island territory.

PUERTO RICO’S GOVERNOR GOES AWOL AS PROTESTORS GATHER OUTSIDE HIS RESIDENCE, US OFFICIALS CALL TO STEP DOWN

His official residence has been under siege this week as hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered outside La Fortaleza, the governor’s official residence.

Amid the outcry, the media-friendly governor has avoided public appearances since July 11, making only four brief appearances, breaking from his usual three or four lengthy news conferences in addition to multiple media appearances.

A wave of protests hit the island on Friday, with union workers marching towards La Fortaleza from the nearby waterfront. Horseback riders and hundreds of other people also joined the march.

Smaller protests also broke out across the island over the weekend, though most people were expected to hit the streets on Monday.

The calls to oust the governor have caught the attention in the mainland U.S. and several officials, including presidential candidate Julián Castro, have come out in support of the protesters.

Castro, a Democrat, openly called on Rosselló to step down, saying “it’s clear that Gov. Rosselló can no longer be effective.”

CASTRO BECOMES FIRST 2020 DEM TO URGE EMBATTLED PUERTO RICO GOVERNOR TO STEP DOWN

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Reps. Nydia Velázquez, D-N.Y., and Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., also called for his ouster.

Some well-known athletes with ties to the island also urged the governor to resign last week, including the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Enrique Hernandez and the Saint Louis Cardinals’ Yadier Molina.

Puerto Rico’s Center for Investigative Journalism earlier this month published nearly 900 pages of private messages between Rosselló and several other government officials.

In one message Rosselló called one New York female politician of Puerto Rican descent a “w—e” and described another as a “daughter of a b—h.” One chat also made vulgar references to Latin pop star Ricky Martin’s homosexuality.

During a July 11 news conference, Rosselló asked Puerto Ricans to forgive him for the comments he made in private. In further media appearances, he continued to ask for forgiveness over the comments many deemed offensive and misogynistic.

One man in his 40s, who was at Clearwater Beach, about 50 minutes from Tampa., was “directly hit by lightning” on Sunday afternoon and went into cardiac arrest, according to Joelle Castelli, public communications director for the city of Clearwater.

Castelli said the man was in critical condition.

California woman, boyfriend accused of strangling her day-old baby in hospital

A young mother has been accused of giving birth to a healthy baby boy in a California hospital and then strangling him a day later in the maternity ward with her boyfriend.

Doctors at St. John’s Medical Center in Oxnard made every effort to revive Baby Diego on Friday over a 10-hour period before declaring him dead, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Sgt. Brandon Ordelheide said the mother, Andrea Torralba, 20, and her boyfriend, David Villa, 21, told investigators Friday morning they had suffocated Baby Diego until he was unconscious, the paper reported.

Records showed both Torralba and Villa were born in Mexico; their citizenship status was unclear.

North Carolina father of 6 has neck broken by ‘intense’ wave, killing him in ‘freak accident,’ wife says

A North Carolina father of six died on Friday after he was struck by an “intense wave” that knocked him to the ground and broke his neck, according to his wife.

Lee Dingle, 37, of Raleigh was playing on the beach at Oak Island with some of his children when he was hit by the powerful wave in a “freak accident,” his wife, Shannon Dingle, wrote on Twitter.

“Lee was playing on the beach with three of our kids yesterday, and an intense wave hit him just right to slam his head into the sand and break his neck,” she said.

“Some heroes — including our kids — tried to save him, but it wouldn’t have mattered what they did,” Shannon Dingle said. “His body couldn’t recover from the initial injury.”

April Schweitzer, a friend of the Dingles, told WRAL-TV the powerful wave and injury left him in a situation that was “totally unexpected.”

“There was just too much swelling to do anything for him,” she told WRAL.

Dingle was the president of Atlas Engineering in Raleigh and had worked for the company for 15 years. The engineering firm promoted Dingle to partner just three weeks ago, ABC11 reported.

“With a focus on personal interaction with clients to ensure the highest level of quality, Lee has extensive experience with the analysis of existing structures, repair design, upgrade/reinforcement details, platforms, cranes/hoists, materials handling systems, and concrete repairs,” according to a bio on the company’s website. “Lee’s private sector clients include manufacturing, research, and pharmaceutical companies.”

Sharon Dingle shared on Twitter the couple met when she was 18 and Lee was 19 and have been together ever since.

“I wasn’t supposed to be saying goodbye at 37,” she said. “I don’t know how to be a grown up without him, but I’ll learn. I just wish I didn’t have to.”

The 37-year-old is survived by his wife and six children by birth and adoption. Schweitzer described him as a model father to ABC 11.

“How he saw each child for who they were uniquely and just supported them in that, encouraged them and was just always there for them,” Schweitzer told the television station. “I feel like anyone who knew him was a better person from their interactions with him.”

A GoFundMe page soliciting money for the family had raised  more than $92,000 as of 10 a.m. on Sunday.

“I’m overwhelmed by all the love as I figure out life without my love after a freak accident,” Shannon Dingle said. “Some friends just created this, and I am so grateful.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Ocean Service warns of the dangers of shorebreaks, an ocean condition when waves break directly on the shore. Waves that are small and high can be “unpredictable and dangerous,” and typically form where this is a rapid transition from deep to shallow water

“The power of a shorebreak can cause injuries to extremities and the cervical spine. Spinal cord injuries most often occur when diving headfirst into the water or being tumbled in the waves by the force of the waves,” the agency states. “Be sure to ask a lifeguard about the wave conditions before going into the water.”

Severe storms leave hundreds of thousands without power across Wisconsin, Michigan

A series of powerful thunderstorms over the weekend across the upper Midwest may have given a reprieve from the heat wave gripping the eastern half the country, where hundreds of thousands across Michigan and Wisconsin are without power while residents clean up the damage.

The thunderstorms brought hurricane-force wind gusts in two rounds on Friday night and Saturday from South Dakota into southern Minnesota, with a separate cluster of storms stretching across Wisconsin and into Michigan.

“I was so scared, I really thought I was going to die,” Lisa Gast told FOX11.

Gast, who was driving from work to her home in Mountain when the first round of storms moved through, said in her 20 years living in the community about 65 miles northwest of Green Bay she’s never experienced a storm like the one Friday night.

“I wanted to get home to my family,” she said.

As of Sunday morning, more than 564,000 power outages were reported in Wisconsin and Michigan as a result of the severe weather, according to poweroutage.us.

The vast majority of outages were reported in Michigan, where DTE Energy said 375,000 customers were without power as of 6 a.m. on Sunday due to the two waves of severe weather that moved through southeast Michigan Friday and Saturday.

“I know it is very hard and inconvenient to live without power any time, but especially in today’s record heat levels,” spokesperson Heather Rivard told FOX2.

Rivard said that crews working 16-hour shifts around the clock were calling for back up, with several crews arriving Saturday afternoon from northern Indiana. Officials have answered calls for more than 1,500 downed power lines due to the storms.

“There may still be additional wires down out there. We encourage you, if you see a downed line, do not go near it and call DTE right away,” Rivard told FOX2.

Electric service is expected to be restored to all affected customers by the end of the day Tuesday, according to DTE.

The extreme heat helped trigger severe weather throughout Metro Detroit and southeastern Michigan, with areas hit by flooding, 60 mph winds and egg-sized hail.

The line of severe thunderstorms that impacted South Dakota into Minnesota were known as a derecho, which is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms, according to AccuWeather.

“The derecho and other severe thunderstorms erupting over the Midwest on Saturday were fueled by the sweltering heat and humidity surging over a large part of the nation,” said stated AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski.
