An American driver has been arrested in Texas after border agents found 53 illegal immigrants from Mexico and several other countries south of the U.S. border hidden inside a sweltering tractor-trailer, authorities said Friday.

The unidentified driver was the only visible occupant inside the vehicle when it pulled up to the Interstate Highway 35 (IH-35) checkpoint north of Laredo on Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement.

ARIZONA DRIVER ARRESTED AFTER 31 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FOUND IN TRACTOR-TRAILER, INVESTIGATORS SAY

A canine alerted border agents to the odors of concealed humans or narcotics from inside the trailer during a primary inspection of the vehicle, the CPB said. Upon further examination, agents said they discovered 53 migrants from Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, who were “all illegally present in the United States.”

The temperature inside the trailer was recorded at 105 degrees at the time of the discovery, though no one required medical attention, according to the CPB.

Agents arrested the U.S. citizen and all 53 illegal immigrants, who they said would be “processed accordingly.” Border Patrol seized the tractor-trailer.

It was unclear whether the driver is facing charges, but investigators called the incident a “human smuggling attempt.”

Homeland Security Investigations is handling the case.

Texas high school student arrested after hitting principal, threatening school shooting

A Texas high school student was arrested on Tuesday after assaulting his principal, a police officer and threatening to use a gun in a school shooting, reports say.

Jaelon Gipson, 17, allegedly threatened to pull a gun from his backpack and start shooting at Terrell High School, the Terrell ISD police chief, Gary Monk, told inForney.com.

Overhearing his threats, students reported his gun comments to the school and police were called to the scene around 12:41 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the outlet.

“He was gesturing, reaching in and acting like he was pulling out a gun,” Monk added.

While police didn’t find a firearm on Gipson, he was found to have under 2 ounces of marijuana in his possession.

Texas Education Code states if “the person intentionally exhibits, uses, or threatens to exhibit or use a firearm,” it’s classified as a third-degree felony.

Deputies in Tennessee conducted a woodland search last week for a 41-year-old nurse who has been missing for four months.

The search Tuesday took place near the Cordova, Tenn., home of Taquila Hayes, who was last seen in May. Her family reported her missing to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department in August when they learned of her disappearance, according to reports.

“We have not found anything or heard from anyone that would suggest that Ms. Hayes is in the area or alive or well,” Chief Inspector Chris Harris said Friday, according to WMC-TV.

He said investigators had talked to her husband Carl Hayes several weeks ago but not recently.

An August search warrant accuses him of knowing what happened to his wife, the station reported.

“Carl Hayes was involved directly with Taquila Hayes’ disappearance sometime between 5/21 and 5/22/2019,” the document says, according to the station.

The husband has not been charged with any crime.

Investigators obtained the warrant to conduct a search of the Hayes home after noticing fresh paint on the walls and new carpet in the living room, dining room and master bedroom, Fox 13 Memphis reported.

Detectives discovered that Carl Hayes had withdrawn from his wife’s bank account after she disappeared, according to the station, which spoke to Taquila Hayes’ mother in August.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Three people have died and four others were hospitalized in serious to critical condition in Pittsburgh after police responded to a “medical situation” early Sunday.

Five victims were found in an apartment on the city’s south side, the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department said. One was found in an elevator outside the apartment and another was discovered on a street corner at 26th and Carson.

All the victims were wearing orange paper wristbands, police said.

There were no initial signs of drug paraphernalia or needles on the victims, police told WPXI-TV. The investigation so far indicates that whatever happened to the victims occurred at another site and not at the locations they were found, the station reported.

Police said they identified two venues using orange paper wristbands Saturday night.

Anyone who attended or knows of a party or event in which guests were given orange wristbands have been asked to call police at (412) 323-7141.

Florida girl, 6, arrested for battery by school resource officer for temper tantrum: report

Westlake Legal Group police-lights- Florida girl, 6, arrested for battery by school resource officer for temper tantrum: report Nicole Darrah fox-news/us/us-regions/southeast/florida fox-news/us/education/primary-elementary fox-news/us/education fox-news/us/crime/police-and-law-enforcement fox-news/us/crime fox-news/odd-news fox news fnc/us fnc article 26452f36-db72-5067-b942-0d0df1c91146

A Florida grandmother claims her 6-year-old granddaughter was arrested by a resource officer after throwing a temper tantrum at school — which she says happened because the child suffers from sleep apnea.

Meralyn Kirkland says the child, Kaia Rolle, was acting out at Lucious and Emma Nixon Academy, a charter school in Orlando, as a result of lack of sleep. The 6-year-old was then brought to the principal’s office.

CALIFORNIA WOMAN CAUGHT PUSHING $6,000 WORTH OF STOLEN QUARTERS IN BABY STROLLER, POLICE SAY

Kirkland told WKMG-TV that while there, a school staff employee grabbed Kaia’s wrists, sparking her to lash out and kick her legs. The school resource officer — Officer Dennis Turner, of the Orlando Police Department — handcuffed Kaia and transported her to the Juvenile Assessment Center in Orlando on a battery charge.

Her grandmother said the child was fingerprinted and had her mugshot taken.

The department didn’t immediately return Fox News’ request for comment. Sgt. David Baker told the news outlet that for arrests of people under the age of 12, officers are required to get permission from their watch commander — which he said Turner did not do.

TEXAS MAN WANTED FOR DIVORCING HIS WIFE WITHOUT HER KNOWLEDGE

Kirkland claims that when she told Turner the 6-year-old has sleep apnea, which the family is “working on getting resolved,” the officer didn’t understand why that would be an excuse for the child.

“He says, ‘Well, I have sleep apnea, and I don’t behave like that,'” Kirkland claimed the officer told her.

Kirkland questioned how a child could be arrested for kicking somebody.

“How do you do that to a 6-year-old child and because she kicked somebody? … A literal mug shot of a 6-year-old girl,” she said. “No 6-year-old child should be able to tell somebody that they had handcuffs on them and they were riding in the back of a police car and taken to a juvenile center to be fingerprinted, mug shot.”

Turner also reportedly arrested an 8-year-old that day in a separate incident on Thursday, according to WKMG. Baker told the news outlet Turner did not request permission for that child’s arrest, either. Authorities said an internal investigation is ongoing.

Kirkland says Kaia is supposed to report to court Oct. 16 and if she doesn’t a warrant will be issued for her arrest.

A 3-year-old boy died in Texas on Saturday after his parents left him inside a hot car by accident, police said.

The boy and his family had just returned to their San Antonio home from their 6-year-old son’s tee ball game in the early afternoon when his parents and older brothers went inside.

WHY DO PARENTS FORGET THEIR CHILDREN IN HOT, PARKED CARS?

His parents realized the child was left inside the car, and went back outside to get him — “where they found him unresponsive,” the San Antonio Express-News reported.

“This really was just a case of parents who just got distracted,” San Antonio Police Lt. Jesse Salame said. “They discovered him unresponsive in the vehicle, pulled him out and began life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful.”

Salame described the situation as a “horrific tragedy,” and said both parents thought the other had taken the child out of the car.

Temperatures in San Antonio on Saturday reached a high of 93 degrees, according to the news outlet.

FLORIDA MAN WITH DOWN SYNDROME DIED IN HOT CAR AS CARETAKER SLEPT OFF KRATOM OVERDOSE, SHERIFF SAYS

According to Kids and Cars, a nonprofit organization that tracks such deaths, the boy in San Antonio was the 43rd child to die in a hot car this year — the sixth in Texas.

Dr. Rosina McAlpine, a parent expert and CEO of Win Win Parenting, previously told Fox News that oftentimes when parents forget their children inside hot vehicles, it’s because they’re often in a rush to get to work, an appointment, or another obligation and “forget they haven’t dropped the child off at day care or school and rush off to the meeting or work distracted, leaving their child behind.”

“Later they remember in shock but often it is too late,” she said, noting some parents alternate dropping their child off at day care, and might “forget it was their turn.” McAlpine said some caregivers “knowingly” leave children inside cars, as the kids “are sleeping and don’t want to disturb them in the hope they’ll get back before they awake.”

Those who leave their children in the car also may not understand the danger they’re in, or consider how fast cars can heat up. The interior temperature of a car can quickly skyrocket, with 80 percent of the total temperature rise happening in the first 30 minutes a child is inside a car — where the temperature inside can exceed those outside by up to 50 degrees.

California police saw a woman struggling to push a baby stroller — but it wasn’t a baby she was trying to move.

Darrin Fritz, 29, was pushing roughly $6,000 in quarters that she had allegedly stolen during a burglary, investigators said. Officers with the Bakersfield Police Department noticed Fritz struggling with the stroller, and went to conduct a welfare check.

Texas man wanted for divorcing his wife without her knowledge

A Texas man is wanted by authorities for divorcing his wife — apparently without her knowledge.

Paul Nixon, 51, allegedly broke it off from his wife using forged documents behind her back, authorities claimed. Nixon’s wife told investigators on May 14 the man “filed for divorce and completed the entire proceedings without her knowledge or consent and that the court had already completed all hearings and filed the final divorce decree.”

Nixon, of Harris County, submitted “several forged documents and false information” to a district court, “including a forged waiver of service” and a forged signature from a notary public in an effort to divorce his wife,” according to a press release posted on the constable’s Facebook page.

Nixon’s wife “was very surprised,” Constable Mark Herman told the New York Post. “In this particular case, the gentleman decided to go through a divorce but the only problem is, he left his wife out of the process. And that’s a violation of the law here in Texas.”

Nixon and his wife were only married for a “couple of years” before he moved forward with their divorce, without her.

The divorce decree has been vacated since it was filed fraudulently, officials said. Herman said Nixon and his wife “are still legally married.”

Washington Monument elevator briefly breaks down after years of elevator renovations

Days after it reopened to the public, the elevator inside the Washington Monument temporarily broke down on Saturday, park officials said.

The monument — the tallest building in Washington, D.C. — opened on Thursday after a three-year renovation in which its elevator and security systems were upgraded.

WASHINGTON MONUMENT WILL REOPEN TO PUBLIC ON THURSDAY AFTER THREE YEARS OF RENOVATIONS

On Saturday, however, “The elevator was down for about an hour, but came back online,” the National Park Service (NPS) wrote on Twitter. “No evacuation via the stairs was necessary.”

“We apologize to our visitors who were inconvenienced. Normal operations have resumed and tours are running on schedule.”

Mike Litterst, a spokesperson for NPS, said staffers resolved the issue after about an hour and visitors who were at the top of the 555-foot monument were able to get back downstairs using the elevator.

Before it reopened this week, the Washington Monument had been closed for most of the past eight years. An August 2011 earthquake left cracks in the stones near the top of the obelisk. It reopened in 2014, but Park Service officials were forced to close it again two years later after a series of elevator malfunctions.

Construction on the monument began in 1848 and took nearly 40 years to complete. The private organization that was running the project ran out of funding and construction was halted in 1854 at around 150 feet; that delay was exacerbated by the Civil War.

Construction resumed in 1879, but builders were forced to use stone from a different quarry — giving the obelisk its distinctive two-tone color. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest building in the world, but was soon overtaken by the Eiffel Tower in 1889.

Fox News’ Frank Miles and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
