Dead newborn found in Ohio college dorm bathroom

Ohio police are investigating after the body of a newborn was found inside a trash can in the restroom of a dorm hall at Hiram College on Friday morning, police say.

The dorm was put on lockdown after the baby was found in a garbage bag at 10:48 a.m. by a school maintenance worker, who contacted Hiram Village Police immediately, according to Police Chief Brian Gregory.

“We’re in a state of shock. We are mourning as a campus community. We’re a small community, a very kind and caring one, so this has taken us by surprise and we are doing everything we can to restore a sense of health and good welfare for our students and our faculty and staff,” the school’s president, Lori Varlotta told WEWS-TV. “We have a clinical psychologist on staff who’s meeting with students who want to do personal counseling. We have a very active chaplain who is providing ministerial services.”

The cause of death isn’t known at this time, and Hiram police have launched an investigation with assistance from the state Bureau of Criminal Investigations.

The Portage County Coroner, Dr. Dean DePerro, told Fox 8 that it’s unclear how long the newborn — who was either full-term or nearly full-term — had been in the bathroom. He says it’s unknown if the infant was delivered alive or stillborn.

“The death of a child is always difficult,” said Dr. DePerro told the outlet. “It never gets easier.”

OHIO TOWN SPLITS BUILDING IN TWO OVER PROPERTY DISPUTE

DePerro says the mother was identified late Friday night, where she was reportedly taken to a local hospital for treatment. School officials had urged the mother to seek medical treatment earlier in the day, according to WEWS-TV.

“She should feel free to come forward to get medical attention and to come forward to anybody at the college for help for counseling — to make sure she gets to the appropriate places in a very timely way,” Varlotta told the station.

The baby’s remains were taken to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner for a full autopsy.

Shannon Ferraby lived next to Hiram College — a private liberal arts college — for over 10 years. She hopes other moms know there are resources out there if you’re ever feeling overwhelmed.

“I know that myself and other moms will make sure now that people know there are resources,” Ferraby told WOIO. “I’d be happy to talk to her, pray with her, see if she still needs help. “She probably is scared to tell anyone. That’s a terrible place to be in.”

Varlotta says the university has a “wide array” of mental health services while adding that the school does its best to provide resources towards students in need.

Hiram College is about 45 miles southeast of Cleveland.

‘Habitual runaway’ emu being sought by Minnesota sheriff’s deputies

Deputies with a Minnesota sheriff’s office say they are searching for a “habitual runaway” emu who has eluded capture after disappearing — again.

The deputies, who are with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, said on Facebook Saturday that the emu disappeared in Foley with another emu and a dog.

“Emu #1 and his canine accomplice turned themselves in without incident,” they wrote. “Emu #2 however had other plans and remains at large.”

In announcing the law enforcement search for the missing emu, deputies said the bird was “wanted for questioning for being a habitual runaway.”

Their Facebook post advised, “do not approach the subject as he may be violent” and then added, “All jokes aside, this emu is missing from a local property in the Foley area. If spotted, please give us a call so we can return him safely to his already identified owner.”

A woman wrote back to say she had seen the emu on Benton County Road 66 Sunday morning.

“Scared the crap out of me,” Kylie Pozorski said.

Another person wrote that he hoped deputies find the emu and the owner gets her back.

A dog was being blamed for an accident in Alabama in which her owner was run over by his four-wheel all-terrain vehicle.

The man, whose name was not released, was seriously injured in the incident, which happened Thursday in Loxley, a local television station reported.

The man pulled into a bakery on Highway 59 with the pooch tied to a leash, the station, WKRG-TV, reported Saturday.

When the dog tried to run off, somehow the leash became tangled with the throttle.

The acceleration threw the man to the ground and the vehicle then rolled on top of him, according to the station.

The highway was shut down so that a chopper could land to airlift the man to the hospital.

Chicago’s top cop caught sleeping in car after mayor says he had ‘couple of drinks’ with dinner

Eddie Johnson, the superintendent of Chicago Police, has requested the department investigate him after he was caught sleeping in a car at a stop sign — which the city’s mayor claims came after the top cop had “a couple of drinks with dinner.”

Johnson, 59, asked for the internal investigation after a passerby spotted him parked near a stop sign on Thursday and called 911. The superintendent said that while he was driving, he felt lightheaded and pulled over.

Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the department, said Johnson changed a medication he takes earlier in the week, and recently had concerns about feeling exhausted.

“There were no charges of intoxication, no information of intoxication as far as I know,” Guglielmi said.

But on Friday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot told the Chicago Sun-Times that Johnson confessed to her he had drank alcohol with his most recent meal.

“I know what the superintendent told me, which is that he was … changing medication … He’d been out to dinner with some folks. He told me he was driving home,” she said. “He felt ill and pulled over to the side of the road, which he believed was the prudent thing to do … [Internal Affairs Divison] will sort out the rest.”

Lightfoot said she has “no reason to doubt” Johnson’s story, and said “we know he’s had some medical issues.” The mayor said she didn’t ask Johnson if he’d been drinking, but said he revealed that information on his own.

Guglielmi said Johnson, who makes $260,044 per year, requested an investigation of himself because he thinks police officers and the superintendent “ought to be held to the highest standard.”

“So what that means is they’re going to interview the officers, they’re going to look at all available evidence just to make sure that this is above-board and happened as described,” the spokesperson said.

Johnson, appointed in March 2016 by then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel, was hospitalized in June after doctors found a small blood clot in his lung during a stress test done as the superintendent approached the two-year anniversary of his kidney transplant, which happened in August 2017.
