Fire destroys historic Minnesota synagogue; cause under investigation

An overnight fire Monday destroyed an historic 117-year-old synagogue in Duluth, Minn., officials said.

A firefighter was struck by falling debris and had to be rescued from the balcony of the Adas Israel Congregation synagogue in the city’s downtown, the Duluth Star Tribune reported. He was not seriously injured.

The fire at Duluth’s oldest-surviving Modern Orthodox Jewish synagogue was reported at 2:23 a.m. Monday, the paper reported.

“It’s not a good day,” a leading member told the paper, declining to comment further.

Firefighters rescued the Torah scrolls from the basement, the paper reported.

All that was left among the charred remains were the remnants of some structural walls.

Coast Guard makes contact with crew members in stricken cargo ship off Georgia, all confirmed alive

Rescuers made contact Monday with four crew members stuck inside a cargo ship that overturned and caught fire near a major port in Georgia over the weekend, and officials are now working to free the quartet from the massive vessel, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The Golden Ray, a 656-foot vehicle carrier, listed “heavily” and then rolled over on its side early Sunday in St. Simons Sound near Brunswick, Ga., according to the Coast Guard.

Rescuers drilled a hole overnight through the ship’s hull and made contact with the four crew members, who had been listed as missing.

“Extraction being planned,” the Coast Guard tweeted.

RESCUE CREWS SEARCH FOR CREW MEMBERS ABOARD OVERTURNED CARGO SHIP, CONCERNS ABOUT STABILITY

In the hours before Coast Guard announced all crew members were alive, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said that the four crew members were in the engine room of the overturned cargo ship now stuck in the shipping channel awaiting help from a U.S. Coast Guard rescue team.

On Sunday, Coast Guard Capt. John Reed said 20 were safely evacuated from the ship before rescuers determined the smoke and flames and unstable cargo made it “too risky” to venture further inside. Reed said the fire was observed off the ship’s starboard side area of the cargo and produced black smoke.

The foreign ministry’s statement also said the fire that prevented a rescue attempt is now extinguished.

South Korea also said some of the missing South Koreans “apparently tapped back three times” after Coast Guard staff tapped on the hull. A Coast Guard spokesman told The Associated Press on Monday morning that rescuers heard noises but initially couldn’t confirm they were signs of life without getting inside the overturned ship.

The Coast Guard shared video on Monday of salvage crews assessing the Golden Ray’s hull for a possible entry.

“Once salvage professionals have determined the vessel to be stable, we will identify the best option to continue our rescue efforts for the four crew members who remain on board,” Reed said during a news conference Sunday afternoon while detailing how the Coast Guard was trying to safely get inside.

CARGO SHIP OVERTURNS NEAR GEORGIA PORT, 4 CREW MEMBERS MISSING, COAST GUARD SAYS

Petty Officer 3rd Class Ryan Dickinson told the AP it is not known if weather conditions caused the ship to lurch. Hurricane Dorian brushed past the Georgia coast last week before being downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone. Dickinson said it was not immediately known whether there were any injuries on board.

Cmdr. Norm Witt, Commander of Coast Guard’s Marine Safety Unit in Savannah, said at Sunday’s afternoon news conference the incident remains under investigation, and so far the stricken ship does not appear to be a pollution hazard to area waterways. Officials, however, are putting together a pollution mitigation plan in case something changes.

The Port of Brunswick is currently closed to vessel traffic, with an established emergency safety zone in St. Simons Sound. Vessels are not authorized within a half-mile of the Golden Ray, which was lying on its side.

The Port of Brunswick is a major deepwater port in Georgia, which is comprised of three terminals that makes up the facility, according to the Georgia Ports Authority.

“The port’s well-earned reputation for productivity and efficiency is heightened by its position as one of the fastest-growing auto and heavy machinery ports in North America,” the GPA’s website states. “Today, more than 12 major auto manufacturers, supported by three auto processors, utilize the Colonel’s Island Terminal.”

The port is one of the busiest U.S. seaports for shipping automobiles. Nearly 614,000 vehicles and heavy machinery units moved across its docks in the 2019 fiscal year that ended June 30, according to the Georgia Ports Authority.

Rescue crews search for crew members aboard overturned cargo ship, concerns about stability

Rescuers scoured the Georgia coast on Sunday for four missing crew members of a cargo ship that overturned and caught fire, but the efforts ran into trouble amid the flames and instability of the ship, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The Golden Ray cargo ship’s problems began early Sunday morning when it listed heavily and rolled on its side in St. Simons Sound near the Port of Brunswick with 23 crew members and one pilot on board.

Coast Guard Capt. John Reed said 20 were safely evacuated from the ship before rescuers determined the situation, as smoke and flames appeared, was too risky to go further inside the vessel. The vessel was just offshore in view of beachgoers on the shoreline.

Reed said rescue teams Sunday were trying to stabilize the 656-foot vehicle carrier to continue their search for the missing crew, but they have been unable to determine if the fire has been extinguished. The Coast Guard tweeted later Sunday afternoon that one of its groups, called the Atlantic Strike Team, was preparing to depart to the site to assess what it called a complex situation.

“Once salvage professionals have determined the vessel to be stable, we will identify the best option to continue our rescue efforts for the four crew remembers who remain on board,” Reed said at a news conference Sunday afternoon.

Search and rescue operations involve federal, state and local agencies. Coast Guard Lt. Lloyd Heflin said rescuers remained on the scene.

“They continue to do what they can. It is a complex situation. We’re looking not just for the safety to be able to rescue the people that are on board, but also to be able to provide safety for our crew. It’s ongoing,” he said.

The Coast Guard said it was notified by a 911 call at about 2 a.m. Sunday of a capsized vessel in the sound.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation. Petty Officer 3rd Class Ryan Dickinson said it isn’t clear if weather conditions caused the ship to lurch. Hurricane Dorian brushed past the Georgia coast last week before being downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone.

The Coast Guard said the overturned ship hasn’t released any pollutants so far, but mitigation responses are ready in case they’re needed. The Golden Ray, which the Coast Guard said was transporting cars, is flagged out of the Marshall Islands and was headed to Baltimore, according to the website vesselfinder.com. The ship’s registered owner is a South Korean company.

Protests in Minnesota over officer-involved shooting after chase streamed on Facebook Live

Protesters blocked traffic on Interstate 494 in Richfield, Minnesota, Sunday evening following a vigil for an officer-involved shooting in the city.

Family members say 30-year-old Brian Quinones was shot and killed by police after a chase around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday evening.

The moments leading up to the officer-involved shooting were captured on a Facebook Live video that was started by Quinones. The video starts minutes before officers tried to pull him over.

In the video, officers begin pursuing Quinones — who seems to remain calm but doesn’t stop — not long after the video starts.

At that point, the video shows Quinones jump from the vehicle — with what appears to be a weapon in his hand — and seconds later gunshots are heard. We’re told Richfield and Edina officers were involved in the incident but it’s not clear which department fired shots.

A vigil was held in Quinones’ memory near the shooting scene around 6 p.m. According to a Facebook event, members from Black Lives Matter and other advocacy groups took part in the candlelight vigil along with members of Quinones’ family.

A Pennsylvania couple is accused of theft after going on a shopping spree with $120,000 that was mistakenly deposited into their bank account, according to a report.

Robert Williams and his wife, Tiffany Williams, appeared in court Tuesday after they spent two and a half weeks blowing through most of their accidental windfall on expenses such as cars, bills and a camper, news station WNEP reported.

Both Robert, 36, and his 35-year-old wife were arraigned on charges for theft and receiving stolen property.

State police said that BB&T Bank deposited the dough into the couple’s account on May 31 in a clerical error by a bank teller.

Bottle with Texas man’s ashes returned to Gulf of Mexico after washing up on Florida beach

A bottle containing the ashes of a Texas man along with some handwritten notes from loved ones has been returned to the Gulf of Mexico, resuming its ocean journey after it washed up on a Florida Panhandle beach.

The beachgoer who found the bottle near Miramar Beach handed it over to local authorities last week. Inside were some of the ashes of Brian Mullins, a tow truck driver from Garland, Texas, who died earlier this year at age 39.

Sgt. Paula Pendleton of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office said she cried while reading the notes, which included the phone number of the deceased man’s family. His mother had placed four $1 bills in the bottle to help pay for the phone calls she hoped people would make to update her family on the bottle’s journey.

“This bottle contains the ashes of my son, Brian, who suddenly and unexpectedly passed on March 9, 2019,” one of the handwritten notes said. “I’m sending him on one last adventure.”

A second note, written on wrinkled school paper, especially moved Sgt. Pendleton, whose husband died last year.

“When my father passed, I was 14-years-old,” the message read. “It has struck our whole family pretty hard and, so far, it has been a very hard road. But, like my granny said, he loved to be free. So, that’s exactly what we are doing.”

JACKSONVILLE MAN PARKS SMART CAR IN KITCHEN TO PROTECT AGAINST HURRICANE DORIAN

Pendleton knew she had to help.

“I was overwhelmed with emotion,” Pendleton recalled. “I sat in here, in my patrol car, and cried like a baby.”

Pendleton enlisted an acquaintance who owns a charter boat to ferry the ashes far off the Florida coast. And on Friday, the bottle, the dollar bills and the ashes were again at sea.

“He was an avid fisherman. He wanted to travel the world,” his mother Darlene Mullins said, noting that her son had never gone ocean fishing. Garland, a suburb northeast of Dallas, is about 300 miles from the Gulf Coast.

Unable to afford to take her son’s ashes out to sea herself, the mother entrusted the task to relatives bound for Florida. While visiting the small Panhandle community of Destin in early August, the bottle was released into the tide.

“We thought it might have been the last we saw of the bottle,” Darlene Mullins said. “But we’ll see where it turns up again.”
