Nashville officer killed after 17-year-old driving without a license slammed into his police vehicle while on duty, police say

A Tennessee police officer was killed while on duty Thursday when his marked police car was struck by a 17-year-old motorist who was driving without a license, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

Officer John Anderson, a four-year veteran of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) and a father of an 18-month-old son, was hit around 3 a.m. Thursday when he was heading to an interstate to assist a fellow officer with a pedestrian who was reported to have been in a traffic lane waving his arms, police said.

Anderson’s police vehicle was “violently struck” on the driver’s side by a 2016 Ford Fusion driven by 17-year-old Jayona Brown, according to police.

NASHVILLE MAN CHARGED WITH LGBT HATE CRIME IN CONNECTICUT OVER CHURCH VANDALISM: POLICE

Brown was booked into juvenile detention on charges of vehicular homicide by recklessness, felony evading arrest, aggravated assault by recklessness, driving on a suspended license and juvenile curfew violation.

According to a preliminary investigation, Anderson, 28, was hit by Brown after she failed to stop for a flashing red traffic light at Woodland Street and Interstate Drive in Nashville, police said.

Officer Anderson died at the scene.  Brown was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where she was treated and released. Police said Brown’s passenger was critically injured and is being treated at another local hospital.

Minutes before the collision, police said a DUI unit officer in an unmarked police car saw the Ford Fusion commit a lane violation and got behind the car.  The officer activated his blue lights to stop the car and police said Brown pulled to the right and slowed down, but did not stop.  When the officer activated his siren, Brown sped away, police said.

Police said the car was not reported stolen since it belonged to Brown’s aunt, and the officer decided not to pursue it. The officer did, however, radio that the car did not stop for him and provided the license plate number, according to police.

Nashville’s mayor, David Briley, tweeted on Thursday that “this tragedy is a stark reminder of our officers’ selfless pledge to protect and serve our city – and we will be forever grateful.”

“When our city experiences tragedy, we come together as one community to support and lift each other up. I know that will happen today and in the weeks to come. My thoughts are with the family and friends of Officer Anderson and our entire police force,” Briley also tweeted.

Anderson graduated from the MNPD academy in June 2015 and was also a member of the department’s Drill & Ceremony Team. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve as well.

MISS HOOTERS TENNESSEE CONTESTANT ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY THRASHING BOYFRIEND’S HOUSE: REPORT

Officer Anderson received the MNPD’s Lifesaving Award in 2017 for saving a victim who had a deep wound after being stabbed. Police said Anderson minimized his blood loss until medics arrived on scene.

Anderson received the Lifesaving Award again in 2018 for saving a suicidal man who was about jump off a bridge.

Anderson also received the Department Commendation Award in 2019 for responding to a reported robbery of a business and arresting two suspects after a “several hours long standoff,” police said.

When Anderson and other officers first responded to the business “all appeared normal,” according to police.

“Rather than just leave, they continued to investigate and found a clerk hiding in a cooler in the back of the convenience store,” police said, adding that the clerk advised that the two suspects were in the office and that one was armed with a gun. Police added that the clerk told officers she had hidden in the cooler after calling 911.

Eva Kor, Holocaust survivor, dies peacefully at age 85

Eva Kor, a Holocaust survivor who founded the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Educational Center in Indiana, died peacefully on Thursday during her annual trip to Poland. She was 85.

Kor, a Jewish native of Romania, was sent to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944, where most of her family was killed.

Kor and her twin sister, Miriam Mozes Zeiger, survived but were subjected to inhumane medical experiments by Nazi doctor Josef Mengele before they were rescued in 1945.

LIBERAL SITE RIPS HOLOCAUST MUSEUM FOR ITS ‘DREADFUL’ INTERVENTION IN ‘CONCENTRATION CAMPS’ DEBATE

Zeiger died in June 1993.

A longtime resident of Terre Haute, Indiana, Kor preached forgiveness, even to the Nazis who tortured her and her sister.

She spent the past 40 years sharing her story with students, teachers, doctors, senators, historians and civic groups both nationally and internationally.

In 1995, Kor opened the CANDLES museum to prevent prejudice and hatred through education about the Holocaust. In 2003, the museum was destroyed by an arsonist. Kor vowed to rebuild and, with the public’s help, reopened the museum in 2005.

“Eva Kor has touched hundreds of thousands of people over her 85 years through her message of overcoming tragedy, finding forgiveness, and healing,” the CANDLES museum said in a statement. “We hope Eva’s story continues to change the lives of those who hear it for many years to come.”

Museum officials said the center will be closed until Tuesday in honor of Kor’s memory.

In 2017, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb awarded Kor the Sachem Award, the state’s highest honor.

Holcomb tweeted Thursday that “the world just lost a giant.”

“Everywhere she went, Eva brought light into darkness & provided comfort to those in pain, unlike anyone we’ve ever met. From her against all odds survival as a young girl in Auschwitz to her peace-spreading message based from home in Terre Haute, Indiana, her relentless and optimistic example inspired the world. Her angelic spirit will live on in the countless souls she saved from ongoing confusion and torment,” Holcomb tweeted.

A public memorial service will be planned.

Crane had placed a hold on his credit card after the two fought but later removed the hold, according to the newspaper. Wolfe then allegedly used it for her meal.

Wolf later admitted she was the one who gave the waitress the generous gratuity, according to the affidavit. Crane said Wolfe was either drunk or trying to get revenge.

An unlicensed Nebraska midwife was arrested Wednesday after a baby died following an unsuccessful delivery at home.

Angela Hock, 36, of Riverdale, was charged with negligent child abuse resulting in death after the baby died at an Omaha home on June 15, according to the Omaha World-Herald.

NEBRASKA WOMAN’S ACCUSED KILLER SLASHES HIS NECK IN COURTROOM HORROR: REPORTS

Paramedics were called to the home at around 9:25 p.m. and they found Hock attempted to help Emily Noe, 25, deliver a breech baby in the home, the newspaper reported, citing a Douglas County affidavit. Noe was on her hands and knees as another woman held the partially undelivered baby.

The baby was eventually delivered by emergency personnel but wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse, according to the World-Herald. The baby was taken to a neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital and placed on life support. Dr. Katherine Lessman, an OB-GYN who was on call at the hospital, said Noe told her she had been pushing for an hour before paramedics were called.

The baby was pronounced dead June 17.

Noe told authorities her water broke at around 9 p.m. June 14 and Hock, who runs Nebraska Birth Keeper, arrived at 6 a.m. the next day, according to the affidavit. Hock asked whether Noe wanted to continue the delivery at home and told her she had training in delivering breech babies, the paper reported. Hock then called authorities after another half-hour.

Lessman told authorities she believed the birth was handled negligently.

“[Hock] placed the child in a situation that endangered her life … and deprived (her) of necessary medical care,” Deputy Douglas County Attorney Molly Keane said. “Her actions in doing so resulted in the death of this child.”

Investigators believe Noe paid Hock and Hock’s husband, Crayton, between $3,000 and $4,000 to handle midwife services, according to the World-Herald.

Chief Deputy County Attorney Brenda Beadle said this is the first time in her career she’s seen an unlicensed person being charged in connection with the death of a baby during a home birth.
