The Latest on mass migration to Europe (all times local):

7:30 p.m.

Cyprus authorities say a police vessel has rescued 14 people believed to be migrants in waters approximately 53 kilometers (33 miles) off the island nation’s southeastern tip.

The Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Center said it received an emergency call Sunday afternoon from a merchant ship that had spotted a small boat off Cape Greco.

The police vessel brought aboard all the passengers, who included a pregnant woman and three children, and took them to the port of Larnaca.

Authorities didn’t reveal the nationalities of the rescued passengers or where their boat set sail from.

Cyprus lies around 170 kilometers (100 miles) west of Syria’s coast and 230 kilometers (140 miles) west of Lebanon.

Spanish authorities say 52 migrants have climbed a guarded fence to gain entry into Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla from Morocco.

An official with the Spanish Interior Ministry in Melilla says four police officer and one migrant sustained light injuries as the group scaled the high fence around dawn Sunday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity, in line with government rules.

Spain’s proximity to North Africa has made it a target for migrants trying to reach the European Union. The migrants try to get in either by land via Spain’s two North African enclaves or by crossing the Mediterranean Sea in small boats.

Spain became the leading entry point to Europe last year, with some 60,000 migrants arriving irregularly, almost all of them by sea.

Catholic church attack in Burkina Faso leaves at least 6 dead, including priest, reports say

At least six people were killed — including a priest — after a Catholic church was attacked and then set ablaze Sunday by a group of armed men in the western African country of Burkina Faso, according to local reports.

The attack happened in the northern town of Dablo, not far from the volatile border with Mali, at the beginning of Mass, Radio France Internationale reported.

A security source told the radio network that Mass had just begun when a “group of some 20 to 30 armed men” approached on motorcycles.

The mayor of the village, Ousmane Zongo, told Agence France-Presse the gunmen then burst into the church.

One resident of the town told RFI it was the first time the village had been attacked.

“There was no sign of any threat to this town,” the resident told the radio network.

PASTOR, 5 OTHERS KILLED IN BURKINA FASO CHURCH ATTACK

While there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, violent Islamic extremism has been increasingly destabilizing the country. A number of jihadist groups are known to operate the area.

Another attack on a Christian church in the region last month after Sunday services left six dead, including a pastor. The Islamic extremists also have targeted foreigners, abducting and killing a Canadian geologist earlier this year.

The attack came two days after the release of two hostages in Burkina Faso during a daring French special forces military operation that resulted in the deaths of two of their own soldiers. The hostages who were rescued, according to France, were a U.S. citizen, a South Korean national, and French nationals Patrick Picque and Laurent Lassimouillas.

While it is not yet clear who abducted the group and why, Burkina Faso – once considered a beacon of calm in the otherwise terror-teeming region – has been a growing hotbed for some time.

Over the past six months, at least 5,000 people have been killed in the Sahel – the sub-Saharan region of northern Africa – amid an escalation of inter-ethnic violence ranging from bombings to massacres to suicide attacks.

Fox News also reported last year that Al Qaeda too had gained a foothold in the region, spilling over the porous border from Mali with weapons pillaged from Libya after the fall of Muammar Qaddafi in 2012.

Prominent journalist who feared for her life shot and killed in Afghanistan

A leading Afghan journalist has been shot and killed in Kabul nearly a week after she expressed fears for her own life.

Mina Mangal, a former TV presenter and adviser for the lower house of parliament, was killed in broad daylight on her way to work Saturday morning.

In a May 2 Facebook post, Mangal said she had been sent threatening messages. She countered back, exclaiming ‘a strong woman wasn’t afraid of death’, according to the Guardian.

AFGHAN OFFICIAL: GUNMEN KILL PROVINCIAL INTELLIGENCE OFFICER

Afghan women’s rights activist Wazhma Frogh shared that post along with an emotional tribute.

During her ambush, the attacker allegedly fired shots in the air to scare off the market crowds and then shot Mangal twice in the chest.

Her supporters, like Frogh, wondered why authorities in Afghanistan hadn’t protected her, especially after her fearful remarks on social media.

“This woman had already shared that her life was in danger; why did nothing happen? We need answers,” Frogh told the Guardian. “Why is it so easy in this society [for men] to keep killing women they disagree with?”

Nasrat Rahimi, the Interior Ministry spokesman, says the attackers are currently unknown and a special unit is investigating the shooting.

Mangal’s mother, however, says she knows who was responsible in an emotional post on Twitter. She says a group of men had already kidnapped her daughter in the past, but they had bribed their way out of prison.

“They took my daughter in the car, injected her 13 times. Her clothes are still stained with blood. She was beaten. I have proof. I have videos. I have every evidence and I have the file,” Mangal’s mother told Tolo News.

AFGHAN BOY, 5, DOES HAPPY DANCE WITH NEW PROSTHETIC LEG

In Afghanistan, the increase in women’s rights over the past two decades have caused opposition groups to object to their new positions of power. Before the U.S. led war in Afghanistan, women weren’t allowed to get an education or find work under Taliban rule. The Guardian says those groups are now targeting women in positions of power including politicians, teachers, journalists and policewomen.

Much of Mangal’s work focused on the rights of Afghan women to work and the Afghan girls’ rights to go to school.

Days before Mangal’s murder, the Taliban attacked the headquarters of an international aid group in Kabul, targeting the group for its work in women’s rights, according to the Guardian.

An April report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) says 2018 was the deadliest year since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001 for Afghan journalists, with 15 journalists and media members killed throughout the year.

A senior British minister is warning that the upcoming European Parliament elections will be seen by some as “the ultimate protest vote opportunity,” as polls suggest that populists could unseat Britain’s mainstream parties amid the country’s ongoing Brexit chaos.

Education Secretary Damian Hinds told the BBC Sunday there’s no doubt that the May 23 EU elections in Britain will be difficult for Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservatives.

Two recent polls suggest that the newly formed Brexit Party, headed by pro-Brexit politician Nigel Farage, could win big at both the EU vote and any British general election, at the expense of the Conservatives and the main opposition Labour Party.

May had wanted to lead Britain out of the EU before the bloc’s elections, but Brexit remains on hold amid political deadlock.

A letter from Iran over judo rules is being heralded by Israel and the International Judo Federation as a sign the Islamic Republic will allow its athletes to compete against Israelis.

However, Iranian media outlets on Sunday called the response “baseless” and “strange.” Iran’s local judo federation did not immediate answer calls for comment.

Iranian judoka, like other athletes, routinely forfeit matches with Israelis as Iran does not recognize Israel as a country.

The International Judo Federation posted the letter from Iran on Saturday night, which said Iran would “fully respect the Olympic Charter and its nondiscrimination principle,” without elaborating.

Moshe Ponte, the head of the Israeli Judo Association, told The Associated Press he welcomed “this courageous and correct decision” by the International Judo Federation to publish the letter.

They said it is not clear what their relationship was, what happened inside the hotel room or how exactly the three died.

Dpa reported that prosecutors have ordered an autopsy.

Berliners are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the day the Soviets lifted their blockade strangling West Berlin in the post-World War II years with a big party at the former Tempelhof airport in the German capital.

Among the guests of honor will be 98-year-old U.S. airlift pilot Gail Halvorsen, who dropped hundreds of boxes of chocolate-covered raisins on tiny parachutes into West Berlin during the blockade.

The airlift began June 26, 1948, in an ambitious plan to feed and supply West Berlin after the Soviets — one of the four occupying powers of a divided Berlin after World War II — blockaded the city in an attempt to squeeze the U.S., Britain and France out of the enclave within Soviet-occupied eastern Germany.

Allied pilots flew a total of 278,000 flights to Berlin before the blockade was lifted.

Pope Francis is ordaining 19 men to the priesthood in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Most of them are Italians, but other seminarians are from Croatia, Peru, Haiti and Japan.

Wearing white robes, the seminarians stood in three rows before the central altar after replying, “Here I am,” as their names were called one by one. Francis in a ritual asked if they were worthy to become priests.

During his homily, he told them to carry out their mission “in joy and charity” and to never “tire of being merciful” toward the faithful.

The seminarians’ ages range from mid-20s to 46.

The ordinations come as the church and many of its clergy have lost credibility with rank-and-file Catholics after decades of scandals involving pedophile priests and systematic cover-up by bishops.
