Israel, judo federation hail letter from Iran; Tehran silent

A letter from Iran over judo rules is being heralded by Israel and the International Judo Federation as a sign the Islamic Republic will allow its athletes to compete against Israelis.

However, Iranian media outlets on Sunday called the response “baseless” and “strange.” Iran’s local judo federation did not immediate answer calls for comment.

Iranian judoka, like other athletes, routinely forfeit matches with Israelis as Iran does not recognize Israel as a country.

The International Judo Federation posted the letter from Iran on Saturday night, which said Iran would “fully respect the Olympic Charter and its nondiscrimination principle,” without elaborating.

Moshe Ponte, the head of the Israeli Judo Association, told The Associated Press he welcomed “this courageous and correct decision” by the International Judo Federation to publish the letter.

German police say they are investigating the deaths of three people whose bodies were found with crossbow bolts in them in a hotel room in Bavaria.

German news agency dpa reported Sunday that employees of a hotel in the town of Passau found the bodies and two crossbows in the room.

Police said the three victims, who were found on Saturday, were a 53-year-old man and two women aged 33 and 30, all of them German citizens.

They said it is not clear what their relationship was, what happened inside the hotel room or how exactly the three died.

Dpa reported that prosecutors have ordered an autopsy.

Berlin Airlift remembered, key moment in Cold War

Berliners are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the day the Soviets lifted their blockade strangling West Berlin in the post-World War II years with a big party at the former Tempelhof airport in the German capital.

Among the guests of honor will be 98-year-old U.S. airlift pilot Gail Halvorsen, who dropped hundreds of boxes of chocolate-covered raisins on tiny parachutes into West Berlin during the blockade.

The airlift began June 26, 1948, in an ambitious plan to feed and supply West Berlin after the Soviets — one of the four occupying powers of a divided Berlin after World War II — blockaded the city in an attempt to squeeze the U.S., Britain and France out of the enclave within Soviet-occupied eastern Germany.

Allied pilots flew a total of 278,000 flights to Berlin before the blockade was lifted.

Pope ordaining 19 men to priesthood in St. Peter’s Basilica

Pope Francis is ordaining 19 men to the priesthood in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Most of them are Italians, but other seminarians are from Croatia, Peru, Haiti and Japan.

Wearing white robes, the seminarians stood in three rows before the central altar after replying, “Here I am,” as their names were called one by one. Francis in a ritual asked if they were worthy to become priests.

During his homily, he told them to carry out their mission “in joy and charity” and to never “tire of being merciful” toward the faithful.

The seminarians’ ages range from mid-20s to 46.

The ordinations come as the church and many of its clergy have lost credibility with rank-and-file Catholics after decades of scandals involving pedophile priests and systematic cover-up by bishops.

Iranian media say reformist magazine closed by authorities

Iranian media say the country’s authorities have shut down a reformist magazine that urged negotiations with the United States.

Another reformist newspaper, Arman, reported Sunday that a court had suspended the weekly magazine Seda a day earlier.

Seda’s most recent front page showed a U.S. aircraft carrier fleet and the caption “At the crossroads between war and peace.”

The magazine called for “high level engagement” between the U.S. and Iran, warning that closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, an occasional threat by Iran, would lead to “widespread war.”

A third of all oil traded by sea passes through the strait, which lies at the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf.

Recent U.S. military deployments to the Persian Gulf, including an aircraft carrier, have raised tensions with Iran.

Albania opposition set to continue anti-govt protests

Albania’s center-right opposition has decided to continue protests calling for the resignation of the government and for an early parliamentary election.

The leadership of the Democratic Party-led opposition decided to hold a small protest Sunday against the arrest of a senior party official and called a potentially larger, national rally for Monday.

Saturday’s protest turned violent, with opposition supporters using Molotov cocktails and police using tear gas and water cannons. Protesters and police officers were injured.

The opposition accuses the Cabinet of Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama of being corrupt and linked to organized crime, which the government denies.

Rama denounced the violence, adding that “Albania is damaged.”

In June, Albania expects an answer from the European Union on whether full membership negotiations will be launched, and also holds municipal elections.

Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry says eight alleged terrorists have been killed in a shootout with security forces in the predominantly Shiite eastern region of Qatif.

The ministry says security forces launched a raid Saturday on the island of Tarot off the coast of the kingdom’s oil-rich Eastern Province. The statement describes the group as a “terrorist cell” and accuses them of planning to attack vital installations and security targets.

The Interior Ministry says security forces only opened fire after they were shot at.

Videos posted on social media by residents of Tarot on Saturday showed black smoke rising from residential buildings and the sound of heavy gunfire.

The shootout comes just weeks after Saudi Arabia beheaded 34 Shiites in a mass execution that was criticized by human rights groups.

Lebanon’s former Maronite Christian patriarch Sfeir dies

Lebanon’s Maronite Christian church says its former patriarch, Cardinal Nasrallah Butros Sfeir, has died after several days in hospital. He was 98.

Sfeir, an outspoken and feisty personality, served as spiritual leader of Lebanon’s largest Christian community through some of the worst days of the 1975-90 civil war.

He then played a key role in shaping the country’s postwar politics as one of the most prominent Christian leaders in the mostly Muslim region.

The former patriarch passed away early Sunday at a Beirut hospital. The church issued a statement saying “The Maronite church is orphaned and Lebanon is in sadness.”

Cardinal Bechara Rai, who succeed Sfeir in 2011, called on churches to ring their bells and hold prayers for the late leader.

Australia’s prime minister has officially launched his conservative coalition’s campaign less than a week before an election in an extraordinarily personal presentation.

Scott Morrison is his government’s third prime minister in the administration’s six years in office and still remains relatively unknown to many Australians. He is asking them for a third three-year term when they vote on Saturday next week.

The coalition’s launch in the city of Melbourne on Sunday included recorded interviews with Morrison family members that covered his wife Jenny’s diagnosis with endometriosis and their 14-year failed battle to conceive through IVF before having their two daughters naturally.

Morrison also outlined government policies including support for first-home buyers.
