Canadian woman ordered to pay ex-boyfriend massive sum for defaming him online

A Canadian woman has been ordered to pay $200,000 Canadian dollars plus other fees to her ex-boyfriend for defaming him on Instagram and other outlets, according to reports.

Court materials showed that Vancouver resident Noelle Halcrow wrote more than 85 posts online claiming that her ex-boyfriend Brandon Rook spread sexually transmitted diseases, cheated and was an alcoholic.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Elliot Myers wrote in his ruling that Halcrow had defamed Rook in a “relentless” and “malicious” campaign “out of spite,” CTV News reported.

Rook, a business consultant, reportedly met Halcrow in 2015. The pair had an on-again-off-again relationship through July 2016. Halcrow started the posts a month later, CBC reported.

The posts were listed in a timeline and appendix that took up the last 44 pages of the court’s ruling. They originally had been posted on Instagram and various other websites under a pseudonym.

Halcrow, who represented herself in court, had argued that she never made any of the posts. She claimed her friends and other people published them.

In his ruling, Myers wrote that Halcrow “mounted a campaign against Mr. Rook that was as relentless as it was extensive.”

He added, “The courts have recognized that the Internet can be used as an exceedingly effective tool to harm reputation. This is one such case.”

Iraq’s Parliament calls for expulsion of US troops from the country following drone attack

Iraqi lawmakers approved a resolution Sunday calling to expel U.S. troops from the country, following an American drone attack that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Lawmakers approved a resolution asking the Iraqi government to end the agreement under which Washington sent forces to Iraq more than four years ago to help in the fight against the Islamic State terror group.

The majority of about 180 legislators present in Parliament voted in favor of the resolution. It was backed by most Shiite members of parliament, who hold a majority of seats. Many Sunni and Kurdish legislators did not show up for the session, apparently because they oppose abolishing the deal.

Soleimani’s body arrives in Iran as Trump issues new threats

TEHRAN, Iran — The body of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani arrived Sunday in Iran to throngs of mourners after the U.S. drone strike killed the commander, as President Donald Trump threatened to bomb 52 sites in the Islamic Republic if Tehran retaliates by attacking Americans.

Soleimani’s death Friday in Iraq further heightens tensions between Tehran and Washington after months of trading attacks and threats that put the wider Middle East on edge. The conflict takes root in Trump pulling out of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers, an accord likely to further unravel as Tehran is expected to announce as early as Sunday it will break another set of limits.

Iran has promised “harsh revenge.” Already, a series of rockets launched in Baghdad late Saturday fell inside or near the Green Zone, which houses government offices and foreign embassies, including the U.S. Embassy.

TRUMP WARNS IRAN: US HAS TARGETED ’52 IRANIAN SITES’ AND WILL ‘HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD’ IF NEEDED

Trump wrote on Twitter afterward that the U.S. had already “targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture.”

Trump did not identify the targets but added that they would be “HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD.”

After thousands in Baghdad on Saturday mourned Soleimani and others killed in the strike, authorities flew the general’s body to the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. An honor guard stood by early Sunday as mourners carried the flag-draped coffins of Soleimani and other Guard members off the tarmac.

Officials brought Soleimani’s body to Ahvaz, a city that was a focus of fighting during the bloody, 1980-88 war between Iraq and Iran in which the general slowly grew to prominence. After that war, Soleimani joined the Guard’s newly formed Quds, or Jersualem, Force, an expeditionary force that works with Iranian proxy forces in countries like Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.

Authorities also plan to take Soleimani’s body to Mashhad later Sunday, as well as Tehran and Qom on Monday for public mourning processions, then onto his hometown of Kerman for burial Tuesday.

Soleimani was the architect of Iran’s regional policy of mobilizing militias across Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, including in the war against the Islamic State group. He was also blamed for attacks on U.S. troops and American allies going back decades.

Though it’s unclear how or when Iran may respond, any retaliation was likely to come after three days of mourning declared in both Iran and Iraq. All eyes were on Iraq, where America and Iran have competed for influence since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

After the airstrike early Friday, the U.S.-led coalition has scaled back operations and boosted “security and defensive measures” at bases hosting coalition forces in Iraq, a coalition official said on condition of anonymity according to regulations.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has dispatched another 3,000 troops to neighboring Kuwait, the latest in a series of deployments in recent months as the standoff with Iran has worsened. Protesters held demonstrations in dozens of U.S. cities Saturday over Trump’s decisions to kill Soleimani and deploy more troops to the Mideast.

In a thinly veiled threat, one of the Iran-backed militia, Asaib Ahl al-Haq, or League of the Righteous, called on Iraqi security forces to stay at least a kilometer (0.6 miles) away from U.S. bases starting Sunday night. However, U.S. troops are invariably based in Iraqi military posts alongside local forces.

Iraq’s government, which is closely allied with Iran, condemned the airstrike that killed Soleimani, calling it an attack on its national sovereignty. Parliament is meeting for an emergency session Sunday, and the government has come under mounting pressure to expel the 5,200 American troops who are based in the country to help prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State group.

Also Saturday, NATO temporarily suspended all training activities in Iraq due to safety concerns, Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan said.

The U.S. has ordered all citizens to leave Iraq and temporarily closed its embassy in Baghdad, where Iran-backed militiamen and their supporters staged two days of violent protests in which they breached the compound. Britain and France have warned their citizens to avoid or strictly limit travel in Iraq.

No one was hurt in the embassy protests, which came in response to U.S. airstrikes that killed 25 Iran-backed militiamen in Iraq and Syria. The U.S. blamed the militia for a rocket attack that killed a U.S. contractor in northern Iraq.

As red flags unfurl, will Iran retaliate after Soleimani killing?

As the region braced for Iran to fulfill its vows of payback, mourners — mostly men in black military fatigues — raised red flags associated with unjust bloodshed and revenge at the funeral procession this weekend through Baghdad for Iran’s top general and militant leaders who were killed in a U.S. airstrike on Thursday.

Helicopters hovered over the procession for Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC’s) elite Quds Force, which was attended by Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, the commander in chief of the armed forces of Iraq, and leaders of Iran-backed militias.

The procession later made its way to the Shiite holy city of Karbala, where the mourners that are fiercely loyal to Soleimani raised the red flags — a symbolic call to arms — while expressing anti-American sentiments.

Red flags in Shiite tradition symbolize blood spilled unjustly and serve as a call to avenge a person who is slain, The Sun reported.

The red flags also have been flown at demonstrations in Tehran, according to the Daily Mail.

CNBC reported that the red flag was raised in Qom, the seventh-largest city in Iran.

It’s the first time in a Qom mosque’s history — a holy site since the Middle Ages — that the red flag has been raised over the building, the Mail said.

Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip, including the territory’s Hamas rulers, opened a mourning site for the slain general, and dozens gathered to burn American and Israeli flags. Iran has long provided aid to the armed wing of Hamas and to the smaller Islamic Jihad militant group.

The killing of Soleimani was “a loss for Palestine and the resistance,” senior Hamas official Ismail Radwan said.

TRUMP ORDERS ATTACK THAT KILLS IRANIAN GEN. QASSEM SOLEIMANI

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani visited Soleimani’s home in Tehran to express his condolences.

“The Americans did not realize what a great mistake they made,” Rouhani said. “They will see the effects of this criminal act, not only today but for years to come.”

On the streets of Tehran, many mourned Soleimani.

“I don’t think there will be a war, but we must get his revenge,” Hojjat Sanieefar said.

America “can’t hit and run anymore,” he added.

Another man, who identified himself only as Amir, was worried.

“If there is a war, I am 100 percent sure it will not be to our betterment. The situation will certainly get worse,” he said.

Soleimani, who was widely seen as a national icon and a hero of the so-called Axis of Resistance against Western hegemony, was the long-running leader of the elite intelligence wing called the Quds Force, which itself has been a designated terror group since 2007 and is estimated to be 20,000 strong. Considered one of the most powerful men in Iran, he was routinely referred to as its “shadow commander” or “spymaster.”

The Quds Force and other elements operate covertly or sometimes openly overseas, working with Hezbollah of Lebanon, Shiite militias in Iraq and Shiites in Afghanistan.

Soleimani was killed in an airstrike early Friday near the Iraqi capital’s international airport. The drone strike, ordered by President Trump, has caused regional tensions to soar.

Iran has vowed harsh retaliation, raising fears of an all-out war.

Multiple rockets aimed at an Iraqi air base just north of the U.S. embassy, where American troops are deployed, as well as the heavily militarized Green Zone were launched Saturday evening, according to multiple reports.

At least one rocket struck the Balad air base where an unspecified number of U.S. troops are housed, while another hit near the embassy compound in the Green Zone, U.S. Army Public Affairs spokesperson Maj. Charlie Dietz confirmed on Twitter.

Dietz said Balad was the only confirmed point of impact, although a second rocket seemed to strike just south of the Tigris River in the Green Zone.

A senior military official in Iran also threatened an attack on some 35 “American targets,” including “destroyers and warships” near the Persian Gulf Friday night, promising to seek revenge for the killing of Soleimani, according to a report.

Any further retaliation was likely to come after three days of mourning declared in both Iran and Iraq.

The procession for Soleimani began at the Imam Kadhim shrine in Baghdad, one of the most revered sites in Shiite Islam. Mourners marched in the streets alongside militia vehicles in a solemn procession.

Thousands of mourners chanted “America is the Great Satan” during the procession.

The mourners, many of them in tears, chanted: “No, No, America” and “Death to America, death to Israel.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted Saturday that the Iranian-backed militia Kataeb Hezbollah is telling Iraqi security forces to abandon their “duty to protect” the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, and other locations where Americans work with Iraqis.

“Iranian-owned [Kataeb Hezbollah] thugs are telling Iraqi security forces to abandon their duty to protect [the U.S. Embassy Baghdad] and other locations where Americans work side by side with good Iraqi people,” Pompeo said. “The Iranian regime telling Iraq’s government what to do puts Iraqi patriots’ lives at risk.”

Pompeo went on to say Saturday that the Iraqi citizens want to dissociate from Iran.

“The Iraqi people want out from under the Iranian yoke; indeed, they recently burned an Iranian consulate to the ground,” Pompeo added.

Last week, the U.S. military carried out airstrikes in Iraq and Syria — days after a U.S. defense contractor was killed at a military compound in a rocket attack.

U.S. officials have blamed the militia for a rocket barrage that killed a U.S. defense contractor, wounded four U.S. troops and two members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) near Kirkuk, in northern Iraq.

Military fighter jets conducted “precision defensive strikes” on five sites of Kataeb Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Iraqi militia, Pentagon spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman had told Fox News. Two defense officials said U.S. Air Force F-15s carried out the strikes.

On Saturday, President Trump issued a stern warning to Iran through a series of tweets to deter the country from retaliating after the U.S.-ordered airstrike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani on Thursday.

Trump said the U.S. has targeted “52 Iranian sites” that the U.S. military will hit if Iran retaliates.

US military says 2 rocket attacks landed near American troops in Iraq, but no US troops harmed: statement

The U.S. military confirmed Saturday that two rocket attacks occurred in Iraq near bases housing coalition forces, but no American troops were injured.

“The night of Jan. 4, two rocket attacks occurred near Iraqi bases that host Coalition troops in Baghdad and Balad — a total of 13 attacks in the past two months,” said Col. Myles B. Caggins III, a spokesman for the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR).

The CJTF-OIR, a coalition of international forces to fight the Islamic State (ISIS), said Iraqi Security Forces were investigating the incidents.

President Trump issued a stern warning to Iran Saturday through a series of tweets to deter the country from retaliating after the U.S.-ordered airstrike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani Thursday.

“Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American, & badly wounded many others, not to mention all of the people he had killed over his lifetime, including recently hundreds of Iranian protesters,” Trump tweeted.

The president continued: “He was already attacking our Embassy, and preparing for additional hits in other locations. Iran has been nothing but problems for many years.”

Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ elite Quds Force, was killed in an airstrike Thursday in Iraq that was ordered by President Trump.

“Let this serve as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD,” Trump said Saturday, explicitly laying out that the U.S. will act if Iran retaliates.

Following Soleimani’s death, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said “harsh retaliation is waiting for the criminals whose filthy hands spilled his blood.”

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani promised to “take revenge for this heinous crime.”

The Iran-backed militias that spawned in Iraq, known as the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), have been quick to threaten prompt revenge on U.S. personnel and interests. Slaughtered alongside Soleimani at the airport was his close confidante Abu Mahdi al-Mohandas, the deputy head of the PMF.

Iraqi air base with US troops, Green Zone, struck by several rockets, officials say

Multiple rockets aimed at an Iraqi air base just north of the U.S. embassy where American troops are deployed, as well as the heavily militarized Green Zone were launched Saturday evening, according to multiple reports.

At least one rocket struck the Balad airbase where an unspecified number of U.S. troops are housed while another hit near the embassy compound in the Green Zone, U.S. Army Public Affairs spokesperson Maj. Charlie Dietz confirmed on Twitter.

Dietz said Balad was the only confirmed point of impact, although a second rocket seemed to strike just south of the Tigris river in the Green Zone.

According to a Reuters report, the Iraqi military said Celebration Square, just a few blocks away from the U.S. embassy, was hit.

“Several rockets targeting Celebration Square and the Jadriya area in Baghdad, and the Balad air base in Salahuddin province, with no loss of life. Further details to come,” the statement read.

Images from one of the impact points appeared to show a car hit with shrapnel and a sidewalk that was blown out.

News of the rockets came just hours after it was reported that a senior Iranian military official threatened an attack on some 35 “American targets” in retaliation of the U.S. airstrike at Baghdad International airport that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Senior Revolutionary Guards commander Gen. Gholamali Abuhamzeh foreshadowed a possible attack on “vital American targets” located in the Strait of Hormuz.

Australia’s wildfire crisis reached new heights Saturday after it was reported that temperatures in a large suburb in the western part of Sydney reached 120 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the hottest place on earth.

The nearly 200,000 residents of Penrith experienced the hottest day ever recorded in greater Sydney after temperatures soared to 120 degrees, prompting officials to warn that it’s now too dangerous to even evacuate.

“We are now in a position where we are saying to people it’s not safe to move, it’s not safe to leave these areas,” New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters. “We are in for a long night and I make no bones about that. We are still yet to hit the worst of it.”

By nightfall, some 3,600 firefighters were battling blazes that continued to burn across the state.

Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison called up about 3,000 reservists as the threat of wildfires escalated Saturday in at least three states with two more deaths, and strong winds and high temperatures were forecast to bring flames to populated areas including the suburbs of Sydney. High temperatures, dry heat and strong winds have created the perfect storm to allow the now-more than 200 fires to continue to burn and spread at a rapid speed since the wildfires first began in early Sept.

“The ignition sources are already there,” Country Fire Service chief officer Mark Jones said Friday. “There are millions of sparks out there ready to go if they break containment lines.”

Smoke from the wildfires has choked air quality and turned daytime skies to near-nighttime darkness in the worst-hit areas. Its presence can be even seen in satellite images.

“In recent times, particularly over the course of the balance of this week, we have seen this disaster escalate to an entirely new level.”

Defense Minister Linda Reynolds said it was the first time that reservists had been called up “in this way in living memory and, in fact, I believe for the first time in our nation’s history.”

An early and hot start to Australia’s summer has contributed to the wildfires which have now burned more than 12.35 million acres of land and destroyed more than 1,500 homes.

In addition to the loss of human life, Australia’s wildlife has been heavily impacted.

Sydney University ecologist Chris Dickman told the Sydney Morning Herald that it is likely that 500 million birds, reptiles and mammals in New South Wales alone have been killed in the fires. This excludes frogs, bats and insects which he said would make his estimate far greater than that.
