A British soldier deployed to southeastern Africa for a counter-poaching operation was killed while on patrol — with one of the animals he was charged with protecting responsible for his death, officials revealed Tuesday.

The U.K. Ministry of Defense said 22-year-old Mathew Talbot, of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, was on patrol Sunday in Malawi when he was killed by an elephant.

“This tragic incident is a reminder of the danger our military faces as they protect some of the world’s most endangered species from those who seek to profit from the criminal slaughter of wildlife,” Defense Secretary Penny Mordaunt said in a statement.

According to the MOD, Talbot was in Malawi for his first operational deployment and “took great pride in being a Counter Poaching Operator.”

“Mathew was an exceptionally kind and friendly individual,” the ministry said. “In Malawi, he was often to be found befriending the locals and learning their language, which he did remarkably quickly.”

The statement continued: “Mathew was a very keen photographer, documenting his time in the military with countless albums of his work. He particularly enjoyed capturing his time in Malawi…Mathew was an avid reader of military history and he was incredibly proud to serve in a regiment that had such a long an illustrious history.”

About 30 British troops have been deployed in Africa to help in the fight against wildlife poaching, the BBC reported. Their role is to train rangers in tracking, infantry, bushcraft and information analysis skills.

House Armed Services Committee ranking member Rep. Mac Thornberry told “America’s Newsroom” Tuesday he hopes United States military intervention in Venezuela won’t be necessary, but that Cuban interference needs to stop before that can be decided.

Echoing the claims President Trump made last week, Rep. Thornberry, R., Texas, said he believes the Cubans are responsible for the continued support for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

“The important thing to remember about Venezuela is there are thousands of Cubans there that are basically controlling things,” Thornberry claimed. “They’re the security forces and making sure the military stays in line.”

National Security Adviser John Bolton has previously argued that there are at least 20,000 Cuban troops in Venezuela, while the Cuban government has vehemently denied that claim.

After another failed attempt to oust President Maduro last week by U.S.-recognized president of Venezuela Juan Guaido, President Trump appeared to point the blame at Cuba, threatening a “full and complete embargo” in addition to “highest-level sanctions” on the country if they refused to “immediately cease military and other operations” in Venezuela.

Thornberry appeared to support the president on Tuesday, agreeing with the claim some have made that Cuban military is the only remaining factor keeping Maduro in power.

“I believe that Juan Guaido would already be acting as president of all of Venezuela if the Cubans have not been present,” Thornberry said.

How the intervention from Cubans and Russians in Venezuela plays out will be the key in determining whether or not further U.S. involvement is necessary, he added.

The House Armed Services Committee ranking member warned against “direct military engagement” by the United States in Venezuela, but said it’s important not to declare that the U.S. would never involve our military in the situation.

“It is very important you don’t say what you will never do because we want the pressure to be on Maduro and the Cubans who are there propping him up,” Thornberry continued.

“The truth is, the Cubans need to let the Venezuelan people decide this. If they do none of us have to get involved,” he concluded.

The Associated Press contributed to the reporting of this story.

French police say an armed person has taken multiple hostages in a store on the outskirts of the southern city of Toulouse.

Authorities were not certain of the hostage-taker’s identity or how many people were being held.

Police special forces were en route to the convenience store in the town of Blagnac, near the Toulouse airport. A security perimeter has been set up and the local France 3 television says the hostage-taker has demanded to speak with a negotiator.

A Mongolian couple died of the bubonic plague — reportedly after eating raw marmot — prompting a six-day quarantine that left a number of tourists stranded in the region.

The couple had consumed the raw meat and kidney of a marmot, believed by some to be a folk remedy for good health, Ariuntuya Ochirpurev of the World Health Organization told the BBC.

The rodent is a known carrier of Yersinia pestis, the bacterium commonly associated with the highly contagious bubonic plague.

WHAT IT’S LIKE TO HAVE THE BUBONIC PLAGUE

Following the couple’s deaths on May 1, a quarantine was issued in Mongolia’s western Bayan Olgii province, which borders China and Russia.

More than 100 people, including foreign tourists from Switzerland, Sweden, Kazakhstan and South Korea, had come into contact with the couple and were isolated and treated with antibiotics, according to Ochirpurev.

The quarantine was lifted Monday after no other cases were reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says modern antibiotics are effective in treating plague, but without immediate care the infection can cause serious illness or even death. Patients typically develop fever, headache, chills, weakness and painful swelling in the lymph nodes.

“The Black Death,” as it was known at the time, killed millions of people in the Middle Ages, but cases now are uncommon.

Human plague infections do continue to occur in the western United States, but significantly more cases occur in parts of Africa and Asia, according to the CDC.

Egypt’s highest appeals court has upheld death sentences for 13 people convicted of terror charges over attacks in the capital in which explosive devices killed at least two police officers.

The Court of Cassation Tuesday upheld life sentences for 17 others and lesser sentences for another nine, all on similar charges.

The defendants were accused of attempting to kill policemen and civilians by planting explosive devices outside a university campus in December 2014 and a presidential palace the following month. The attacks also wounded 12 people.

The initial sentences were handed down in 2017, with five others acquitted.

Egypt has come under international criticism in recent years for handing down mass death sentences. Most such sentences have been tied up in the courts and never carried out.

Political correctness contributes to alarming anti-Christian hostility around the world and caters to the terrorists trying to eradicate Christianity, an expert on religious persecution told Fox News.

The interim findings of a report, which was released last month and commissioned by British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, shows that anti-Christian hostility is not only spreading geographically but also in severity, in some areas “coming close to meeting the international definition of genocide.”

SRI LANKA EASTER MASSACRE HIGHLIGHTS HOW CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION IS ON THE RISE ACROSS THE WORLD

Juliana Taimoorazy, the president of the Iraqi Christian Relief Council and senior fellow of the Philos Project, told “America’s News HQ” on Saturday that ISIS has been committing genocide. She said while Sam Brownback, the United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, has done a lot, there is a need for more.

“I believe the death of most people suffering today is truly because of political correctness, because the world turns a blind eye to this, and when we are politically correct, we are sympathizing with those terrorists that are destroying communities and erasing history,” Taimoorazy said.

The report comes on the heels of the Sri Lanka massacre by Islamic radical terrorists targeting churches and hotels celebrating Easter that killed 250 and wounded more than 500, which Hunt said has “woken everyone up with an enormous shock.”

“I think we’ve all been asleep on the watch when it comes to the persecution of Christians,” Hunt told reporters during a recent visit to Ethiopia. “There are various reasons for this but…combined together, they’ve crept up on us.”

TERRORIST ATTACKS ON CHRISTIANS ‘HAPPENING MORE AND MORE’: EX-FBI SPECIAL AGENT

An alarming 80 percent of all religious persecution is being done to Christians worldwide, and according to Open Doors USA, a watchdog group on Christian persecution, one out of every nine Christians worldwide is being persecuted.

“Personally, I think it is partly because of political correctness that we have avoided confronting this issue,” the Christian leader said.

“I think there is a misplaced worry that it is somehow colonialist to talk about a religion that was associated with colonial powers rather than the countries that we marched into to as colonizers,” Hunt said. “That has perhaps created an awkwardness in talking about this issue – the role of missionaries was always a controversial one and that has, I think, also led some people to shy away from this topic.”

CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION SET TO RISE ‘SHARPLY’ IN 2019, GROUP WARNS

He added: “What we have forgotten in that atmosphere of political correctness is actually the Christians that are being persecuted are some of the poorest people on the planet.

The report shows Christians are being targeted by extremist groups surrounding the Holy Land, Sub-Saharan Africa, and East Asia.

“The main impact of such genocidal acts against Christians is exodus,” the bishop wrote. “Christianity now faces the possibility of being wiped out in parts of the Middle East where its roots go back furthest.”

UN office hails Myanmar journalists’ release, with a caveat

The U.N. human rights office is praising the release of Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo from prison in Myanmar, but says a “very dire situation” remains for freedom of expression in the Asian country.

Rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani hailed “good news” but insisted that the two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists “should never have been convicted in the first place.”

The journalists were pardoned and released on Tuesday. They had been convicted of violating Myanmar’s Official Secrets Act over reporting on security forces’ abuses of Rohingya Muslims.

Shamdasani cited a rights office report in September, after the convictions, that laid out “very constructive recommendations” to Myanmar’s government to improve freedom of expression.

She said there has been “no positive progress” in relation to those recommendations.

A survivor of the Russian commercial airliner that crash-landed in Moscow on Sunday, killing 41 people, says a flash of lightning was heard moments before the plane began its emergency descent.

Investigators are still working to understand what happened to cause the plane to ignite in a fireball upon landing. A lightning strike is one theory.

Dmitry Kharinin, an engineer and resident of Volgograd told a local news outlet Tuesday that he saw the lightning: “It was very strong, and could be heard throughout the cabin.”

Kharinin says he did not witness a direct lightning strike on the Russian-made Sukhoi SSJ100. However, he speculates that the electromagnetic discharge of the lightning may have disabled plane systems.

The plane landed hard, destroying the landing gear and igniting the engines, he said.

Hundreds young women from Pakistan’s small Christian minority have been trafficked to China as brides in recent months as their impoverished community is targeted in an aggressive new marriage market, activists and officials say.

Brokers offer desperately poor parents thousands of dollars to give girls in marriage to Chinese men, even cruising outside churches for potential brides. They are helped by Christian pastors paid to preach to their congregations with promises of wealth in exchange for their daughters.

Once in China, the girls — most often married against their will — can find themselves isolated in rural regions, vulnerable to abuse, unable to communicate and reliant on a translation app even for a glass of water. Touted as wealthy Christian converts, the grooms often turn out to be neither, according to accounts from brides, their parents, an activist, pastors and government officials, speaking to The Associated Press.

“This is human smuggling,” said Aslam Augustine, the human rights and minorities minister in Pakistan’s Punjab province, in an interview with the AP. “Greed is really responsible for these marriages … I have met with some of these girls and they are very poor.”

The Associated Press interviewed more than a dozen Christian Pakistani brides and would-be brides who fled before exchanging vows. All had similar accounts of a process involving brokers and members of the clergy.

“It is all fraud and cheating. All the promises they make are fake,” said Muqadas Ashraf, who was 16 when her parents married her off to a Chinese man last year. Less than five months later, she returned to Pakistan, pregnant and seeking a divorce.

In China, demand for foreign brides has mounted, a legacy of the one-child policy that skewed the country’s gender balance toward males. Brides initially came largely from Vietnam, Laos and North Korea. Now men are looking further afield, said Mimi Vu, director of advocacy at Pacific Links, which helps trafficked Vietnamese women.

“It’s purely supply and demand,” she said. “It used to be, ‘Is she light-skinned?’ Now it’s like, ‘Is she female?'”

Pakistan seems to have come onto marriage brokers’ radar late last year.

Saleem Iqbal, a Christian activist, said he first began to see significant numbers of marriages to Chinese men in October. Since then, an estimated 750 to 1,000 girls have been married off, he said.

Pakistan’s small Christian community is particularly vulnerable. It is among the country’s poorest and has little political or social supporting, numbering some 2.5 million in Pakistan’s overwhelmingly Muslim population of 200 million.

Among all faiths in Pakistan, parents often decide a daughter’s marriage partner. The deeply patriarchal society often sees girls as a burden because the bride’s family must pay a dowry and the cost of the wedding.

By contrast, potential Chinese grooms offer parents money and pay all wedding expenses.

Some of the grooms are from among the tens of thousands of Chinese in Pakistan working on infrastructure projects under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative. Other grooms search directly from China through networks. They present themselves as Christian converts, but pastors complicit in the deals don’t ask for any documentation.

They pay on average $3,500 to $5,000, including payments to parents, pastors and a broker, said Iqbal.

Muqadas’ mother Nasreen said she was promised about $5,000, including wedding costs. “But I have not seen anything yet,” she said.

“I really believed I was giving her a chance at a better life and also a better life for us,” Nasreen said. When her daughter became increasingly miserable in China, Nasreen contacted the husband and demanded her daughter be sent home.

Dozens of Pakistani priests are paid by brokers to find brides for Chinese men, said Augustine, the provincial minorities minister, who is Christian. Many are from the small evangelical churches that have proliferated in Pakistan.

In Gujranwala, a city north of Lahore, more than 100 local Christian women and girls have been married off to Chinese in recent months, according to Iqbal.

The city has several mainly Christian neighborhoods, largely dirt poor with open sewers running along narrow slum streets.

Pastor Munch Morris, who serves at a local evangelical church, opposes such marriages. But he said he knows a group of pastors in his neighborhood who work with a private Chinese marriage broker. Among them, he said, is a fellow pastor at his church who tells his flock, “God is happy because these Chinese boys convert to Christianity. They are helping the poor Christian girls.”

Rizwan Rashid, a parishioner at the city’s Roman Catholic St. John’s Church, said that two weeks earlier, a car pulled up to him outside the church gates. Two Pakistani men and a Chinese woman inside asked him if he knew of any girls who want to marry a Chinese man.

“They told me her life would be great,” he said. They were willing to pay him to help, but he said he refused because the church’s priest often warns his flock against such marriages.

Human Rights Watch called on China and Pakistan to take action to end bride trafficking, warning in an April 26 statement of “increasing evidence that Pakistani women and girls are at risk of sexual slavery in China.”

On Monday, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency arrested eight Chinese nationals and four Pakistanis in raids in Punjab in connection with trafficking, Geo TV reported. It said the raids followed an undercover operation that included attending an arranged marriage.

The Chinese embassy said last month that China is cooperating with Pakistan to crack down on unlawful matchmaking centers, saying “both Chinese and Pakistani youths are victims of these illegal agents.”

Two suspected terrorists were killed and six others were detained during weekend raids in Indonesia aimed at thwarting a potential terror attack, according to a report.

Police said the ISIS-linked group was planning an attack on a crowd later this month. One of the suspected terrorists was shot and killed by Indonesia’s anti-terrorism squad, Special Detachment 88, while the other died after blowing himself to avoid capture near Jakarta in a separate incident, Reuters reported.

Authorities said the six arrested were linked to the radical Islamist group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which is the largest ISIS-affiliated group in Indonesia. The group was disbanded last year for terrorist activities and its affiliation with ISIS, Reuters reported.
