Boris Johnson compares Britain to the Incredible Hulk amidst Brexit battle

Using a comic book analogy, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson likened Britain to the big green and routinely angry superhero The Incredible Hulk when discussing his efforts to have the country leave the European Union (EU) with or without a deal on Oct. 31.

“Hulk always escaped, no matter how tightly bound in he seemed to be — and that is the case for this country. We will come out on October 31,” Johnson said in an interview with the Mail on Sunday.

“The madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets,” he added.

Members of Parliament (MP) recently passed a vote ordering Johnson to delay Brexit instead of taking the country out of the EU in an effort to quell the immediate economic impact. They’ve repeatedly rejected the exit deal Theresa May, the previous prime minister, negotiated before her exit while refusing to leave without a deal this month, according to Reuters.

Johnson compared the Brexit situation in England to frustrations boiling inside Bruce Banner, the mild-mannered scientist who transforms into the Hulk when he gets angry.

“Banner might be bound in manacles, but when provoked he would explode out of them,” Johnson said in the interview.

His comic book comparisons drew backlash online with Member of European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt, who remarked on Twitter: “Even to Trumpian standards the Hulk comparison is infantile.”

“Is the EU supposed to be scared by this? The British public impressed? Is this Boris Johnson whistling in the dark?” Verhofstadt added.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: BRITAIN’S GOT ONE LAST CHANCE TO REEMBRACE FREE-MARKET DEMOCRATIC WORLD IT HELPED CREATE

The Prime Minister says he wants to negotiate a new deal that doesn’t include a ‘backstop’ which could tie the country to EU rules after it leaves to avoid border checks between Ireland and Northern Ireland. It’s been a key factor in negotiations between the UK and the EU and Johnson says discussions with European leaders about ditching the ‘backstop’ have shown “real signs of movement.”

“There’s a very, very good conversation going on about how to address the issues of the Northern Irish border. A huge amount of progress is being made,” Johnson told the Mail on Sunday.

He is scheduled to meet with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker this week in Luxembourg where he remains confident in getting a Brexit deal done, saying that “we will get there” and a “huge amount of progress is being made.”

“I will be talking to Jean-Claude about how we’re going to do it. I’m very confident,” Johnson said.

Johnson denied lying to Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday over advice he gave her about the bill suspending Parliament, saying, “the Supreme Court has to decide.” Johnson had reportedly advised the queen to suspend Parliament until Oct. 14 because the government needed to launch a new domestic agenda next month.

Hong Kong police deploy water cannons amid clashes with protesters in 15th consecutive weekend of unrest

The streets of downtown Hong Kong turned into the site of clashes between protesters and police on Sunday as the political turmoil continues in the global financial center for a 15th straight weekend.

Tens of thousands of pro-democracy supporters marched through downtown in defiance of a police ban before violence broke out later in the day as police fired chemical-laced blue water meant to mark protesters as well as tear gas at demonstrators who lobbed Molotov cocktails outside the Hong Kong government office complex.

Authorities had turned down a request by the Civil Human Rights Front to hold the march, but the demonstrators were undeterred. Instead, a mixed crowd made up of hardcore protesters in black wearing masks alongside families with children marched for more than  1.2 miles, some waving U.S. and British flags.

“We hope our children have a future, because now in Hong Kong, we cannot see any hope,” a woman named Charis, who brought her 7-month old daughter to the demonstration, told the Wall Street Journal. “We need to stand here, we need to walk here.”

The march featured protesters who burned Chinese flags and tore down banners congratulating China’s ruling Communist Party, which will celebrate its 70th year in power on Oct. 1. In familiar scenes, some protesters smashed glass windows and surveillance cameras at a subway station exit.

Some protesters also carried large American flags and a large banner that read, “President Trump Please Liberate Hong Kong.”

Many in the crowd also sang “Glory to Hong Kong,” a new anthem of the protest movement, according to videos from those at the scene.

Earlier Sunday, hundreds of protesters waved British flags, sang “God Save the Queen” and chanted “UK save Hong Kong” outside the British Consulate as they stepped up calls for international support for their campaign.

With banners declaring “one country, two systems is dead,” they repeated calls for Hong Kong’s former colonial ruler to ensure the city’s autonomy is upheld under agreements made when it ceded power to China in 1997. Demonstrators held similar rallies Sept. 1 at the British facility and last weekend at the U.S. Consulate.

The marches disrupted traffic, and many shops, including the Sogo department store in Causeway Bay, one of Hong Kong’s largest department stores, closed their doors.

Hundreds of protesters later targeted the government office complex, throwing bricks and petrol bombs through police barriers. They were met by police responding with tear gas and water cannon trucks to spray chemical-laced water as well as a blue liquid to help them identify suspects.

Several fights were also reported on city streets, according to the South China Morning Post.

JAMES CARAFANO: HONG KONG PROTESTS, TRADE WAR WITH TRUMP RATTLE CHINA’S LEADER – EXPECT SURPRISES

Police had earlier warned in a statement that the assembly was illegal and urged protesters to “stop their illegal acts.”

The protests were triggered in June by an extradition bill that many saw as an example of China’s increasing intrusion and at chipping away at Hong Kong residents’ freedoms and rights, many of which are not accorded to people in mainland China.

Hong Kong’s government promised this month to withdraw the bill, which would have allowed some criminal suspects to be sent to mainland China for trial, but protesters have widened their demands to include direct elections for the city’s leaders and police accountability.

More than 1,300 people have been arrested amid increasing clashes between protesters and police, who demonstrators have accused of abuses.

The unrest has battered Hong Kong’s economy, which was already reeling from the U.S.-China trade war. It is also seen as an embarrassment to Beijing, which has accused foreign powers of fomenting the unrest.

Police also banned a planned Civil Human Rights Front march on Aug. 31, but protesters turned up anyway. Clashes erupted that night, with police storming a subway car and hitting passengers with batons and pepper spray.

On Saturday, pro-democracy protesters and supporters of the central government in Beijing clashed at a Hong Kong shopping mall and several public places. Police arrested more than a dozen people and hospital authorities said 25 were injured.

Defiant Iran blasts Pompeo’s Saudi-attack accusations as ‘blind and futile comments’

An Iranian official responded Sunday after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pointed at the nation’s government in Tehran following Saturday’s drone attacks on Saudi Arabia oil facilities.

“The Americans adopted the ‘maximum pressure’ policy against Iran, which, due to its failure, is leaning towards ‘maximum lies’,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said, according to the Associated Press.

On Saturday, Pompeo charged that Iran’s government in Tehran ordered “nearly 100 attacks” on a Saudi refinery and oilfield, further alleging that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif pretending “to engage in diplomacy.”

POMPEO ACCUSES IRAN OF ‘UNPRECEDENTED ATTACK’ AFTER DRONES HIT SAUDI OIL FACILITIES

On Sunday, Mousavi dismissed Pompeo’s remarks as “blind and futile comments.”

Saturday’s attacks, for which Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility, resulted in “the temporary suspension of production operations” at the Abqaiq processing facility and the Khurais oil field, Riyadh said. They followed weeks of similar drone assaults on the kingdom’s oil infrastructure, but none of the earlier strikes appeared to have caused the same amount of damage.

The attacks led to the interruption of an estimated 5.7 million barrels in crude supplies, authorities said, while pledging the kingdom’s stockpiles would make up the difference. That size of shutdown hasn’t occurred since Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, The Wall Street Journal reported.

But Saudi officials told the Journal that normal levels of oil production would resume by Monday.

The rebels hold Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and other parts of the Arab world’s poorest country. Since 2015, a Saudi-led coalition has fought to reinstate the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

What remained to be seen were the attacks’ effect on world energy prices. With markets closed Sunday, the answer wouldn’t be known for another 24 hours.

But one undeniable impact was an increase in Middle East tensions amid escalating U.S.-Iran hostilities as the Obama-era nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers continues to unravel.

Meanwhile, President Trump on Saturday called Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to offer his support for the kingdom’s defense, the White House said. The crown prince assured Trump that Saudi Arabia was “willing and able to confront and deal with this terrorist aggression,” according to a news release from the Saudi Embassy in Washington.

Humberto dumps more rain on Dorian-battered Bahamas

FREEPORT, Bahamas  — Tropical Storm Humberto moved away from the Bahamas on Saturday after dumping rain on parts of the archipelago’s northwest region that were already hammered by Hurricane Dorian two weeks ago.

Humberto dropped rain on the islands as U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres visited the Bahamas to support humanitarian efforts in the wake of Dorian, which hit as a Category 5 storm that left thousands in need of food, water and shelter. The list of missing stands at an alarming 1,300 people and the death toll at 50. But officials caution the list is preliminary and many people could just be unable to connect with loved ones.

The storm originally threatened to exacerbate the nation’s problems, but conditions appeared to normalize Saturday afternoon.

TROPICAL STORM HUMBERTO FORMS EAST OF BATTERED BAHAMAS

At 11 p.m. EDT, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Humberto was located about 85 miles north of Great Abaco Island and was moving 6 mph north-northwest with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. The Bahamian government discontinued a tropical storm warning earlier in the evening.

Weather forecasters say Humberto will likely become a hurricane Sunday as it moves away from the Bahamas and the U.S. coast, but won’t threaten land by the time it intensifies to that strength. Its swells could still affect the coasts of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina in the coming days.

Under a bright sun in the Grand Bahama, 40-year-old maintenance man Dexter Wilson was helping a friend put a blue tarp on a damaged roof. He said he was worried about his brother in Abaco given the tropical storm.

“He’s still there. I don’t know why,” he said.

The hurricane center said most of Humberto’s heavy squalls were occurring north and east of the center of the storm, which passed just east of Abaco. However, government officials in the Bahamas took no chances and urged people in damaged homes to seek shelter as they announced that aid efforts would be temporarily affected.

“The weather system will slow down logistics,” said Carl Smith, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency.

The distribution of meals in Grand Bahama was reduced ahead of the storm, and a spokesman for the United Nations World Food Program said all flights into its logistics hub in Marsh Harbor in Abaco were suspended.

Later Saturday, WFP spokesman Herve Verhoosel said the agency had resumed activities in Marsh Harbor.

“Our team is back at work to support the population and relief organizations,” Verhoosel said in a statement.

Dave McGregor, president and COO of the Grand Bahama Power Company, said crews would resume restoring power as soon as possible.

“We are back in storm preparation mode again, unfortunately,” he said.

Guterres, who was in Abaco on Saturday, said he was “horrified” by the level of “systematic devastation.”

“Hurricane Dorian has been classified as Category 5. I think it’s Category Hell,” the U.N. secretary-general said after his visit.

He said storms powered by climate change had grown more intense, and he implored the international community to learn from the example of Abaco and Grand Bahama and provide support.

“We have always had many hurricanes, but now they are more intense, and they are more frequent,” he said.

President Trump said he spoke Saturday to Israel leader Benjamin Netanyahu about the possibility of a “mutual defense treaty” between the two nations—just days before Israeli voters go to the polls to decide the fate of their embattled leader.

Trump said in a tweet that such a defense pact — a Netanyahu priority — would “further anchor the tremendous alliance between our two countries.”

“I look forward to continuing those discussions after the Israeli Elections when we meet at the United Nations later this month!” Trump said.

The comments just three days before the election on Netanyahu’s political future were the latest effort by Trump to back Netanyahu, perhaps his closest personal ally on the world stage.

NETANYAHU WHISKED OFFSTAGE AT CAMPAIGN RALLY AFTER ROCKETS FIRED FROM GAZA STRIP

The timing of the Trump tweet appeared aimed at bolstering Netanyahu’s effort to remain in power by showcasing his close ties to Trump, Reuters reported.

Opinion polls predict a close race, five months after an inconclusive election in which Netanyahu declared himself the winner but failed to form a coalition government.

Some Israeli officials have promoted the idea of building on Netanyahu’s strong ties to the Trump administration to forge a new defense treaty with the U.S.– focused especially on guarantees of assistance in any conflict with Iran, Reuters reported.

But some of Netanyahu’s critics have argued that such an agreement could tie Israel’s hands and deny it military autonomy.

Netanyahu thanked Trump for his announcement, saying he looked forward to meeting him at the United Nations General Assembly, The Wall Street Journal reported.

“The Jewish State has never had a greater friend in the White House,” Netanyahu said.

The White House didn’t immediately elaborate on the tweet. A mutual defense treaty could take months to formalize, the Journal added.

Vandals spray paint swastika, deface graves of fallen WWII soldiers in Netherlands

A World War II cemetery that is the resting place for hundreds of British and Commonwealth soldiers in the Netherlands was the target of vandals who spray-painted a big swastika and random letters on many headstones.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) the vandals targeted the Mierlo War Cemetery in the southern region of Noord-Brabant, which is the final resting place for 658 soldiers who fought in the Second World War.

“My heart is crying,” a woman told the BBC, whose parents helped to look after the cemetery for years. “Here are 17- and 18-year-old boys buried, who liberated us.”

On Saturday morning, staff with the CWGC removed the graffiti from the graves and memorials.

“It’s not just a bit of daubing here, no, they’ve daubed everywhere,” the reporter said. “There’s a letter daubed on nearly every headstone. Unbelievable.”

Graffiti vandalism has started occurring at the cemetery in the lead up to the 75th anniversary of allied forces landing in the Netherlands to liberate the area from Nazi control during WWII, the BBC reported.

Prince Charles is scheduled to attend a Dutch Memoriam of the 1944 Battle of Arnhem later this month.

The battle caused the British 1st Airborne Division to lose nearly 75 percent of its division as casualties. While the battle was considered a failure of the British army, Amhem is considered a symbol of their fighting spirit.

One example of graffiti sprayed on the site was “MH17 lie,” referencing the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014. Of the 298 people killed on the flight, 193 were Dutch.

On Saturday morning, staff with the CWGC removed the graffiti from the graves and memorials.

Bin Laden’s son Hamza was killed in counterterrorism operation, President Trump confirms

President Trump has confirmed that Hamza bin Laden, the son of former Al Qaeda leader and 9/11 mastermind Usama bin Laden, has been killed.

In a statement released by the White House on Saturday morning, three days after the 18th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks, President Trump said Hamza, a high-ranking Al Qaeda member, “was killed in a United States counterterrorism operation in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region.”

“The loss of Hamza bin Laden not only deprives Al Qaeda of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father but undermines important operational activities of the group,” the statement continued. “Hamza bin Laden was responsible for planning and dealing with various terrorist groups.”

It was unclear when the operation took place. The White House statement gave no further details.

Reports of Hamza’s death first surfaced in July, however, details were not immediately available. President Trump and U.S. officials had refused to comment on the death until Saturday’s statement.

Brett Bruen, former White House director of global engagements, told Fox News last month that the death of Bin Laden’s son would be a “big brand hit for extremists.”

“Bin Laden’s son was heir to the throne. Even if he didn’t exercise operational control, his name and those actions requested to be carried out in his name carries weight in amongst those who were drawn to Al Qaeda by his father,” Bruen, who is president of crusts communications firm Global Situation Room, Inc., said. “There may be others who take on leadership roles. It will be a long time, if ever, we see someone who can legitimately claim the legacy of a near-mythical figure like Bin Laden. For those engaged in the long fight against extremism, this is a significant symbolic victory.”

According to AEI’s Critical Threats Project, Hamza’s sermons mirrored those his father gave in his heyday of the ’80s and ’90s – that included attacking the U.S., the West, Russia, and Israel – before they shifted to in 2017 to endorse the jihad in Syria. He also called on Salafi groups to come together under the Al Qaeda banner.

As the leader of Al Qaeda, Usama Bin Laden and others plotted the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. U.S. Navy SEALs killed him in a raid on a house in Abbottabad, Pakistan in 2011.

Drone strikes target world’s largest oil processing facility, Saudi oil field; attack claimed by Iranian-backed rebels

The world’s largest oil processing facility and a nearby oil field in Saudi Arabia were set ablaze early Saturday morning after reported drone attacks by Iranian-backed Yemeni rebels.

The Interior Ministry was quoted by state-run media as saying the fires at the Abqaiq oil processing facility in Buqyaq and the nearby Khurais oil field operated by Saudi Aramco were “targeted by drones.”

It wasn’t immediately clear if there were any injuries, nor what effect it would have on oil production in the kingdom.

Houthi rebels – who are backed by Iran in a yearslong Saudi-led war against them in Yemen – have reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks and vowed that further attacks could be expected in the future.

The military spokesman Yahia Sarie said in a short address aired by Houthi’s Al-Masirah satellite news channel that the group launched 10 drones in a coordinated attack on the sites.

“The only option for the Saudi government is to stop attacking us,” he added.

State television showed footage showing smoke from the blazes clearly rising behind a correspondent.

Saudi officials have not commented on who they think is behind the attacks. Saudi Aramco did not immediately respond to questions from the AP.

The oil facility processes sour crude oil into sweet crude, then later transports onto transshipment points on the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. Estimates suggest it can process up to 7 million barrels of crude oil a day.

The Khurais oil field is believed to produce over 1 million barrels of crude oil a day. It has estimated reserves of over 20 billion barrels of oil, according to Aramco.

The plant has been targeted in the past by militants. Al Qaeda claimed suicide bombers tried but failed to attack the oil complex in February 2006.

The Saudi-led coalition has been battling the rebels since March 2015. The Iranian-backed Houthis hold Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and other territory in the Arab world’s poorest country.

The war has become the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The violence has pushed Yemen to the brink of famine and killed more than 90,000 people since 2015, according to the U.S.-based Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, or ACLED, which tracks the conflict.

Taliban negotiators arrive in Moscow days after Trump declares Afghan peace talks ‘dead’

A Taliban negotiating team arrived in Russia on Friday, less than a week after President Trump announced that peace talks with the Islamic militant group in Afghanistan were essentially “dead.”

The trip, led by Mullah Sher Mohammad Stanikzai, was the Taliban’s first international visit following the collapse of talks with Washington.

The Russian state news agency Tass, citing the Taliban’s Qatari-based spokesman, Suhail Shaheen, reported that the delegation had met with Zamir Kabulov, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy to Afghanistan. A Taliban official confirmed the visit to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Russia has been accused of aiding the Taliban as a safeguard against a burgeoning affiliate of the Islamic State (ISIS) that has close ties to the Islamic Movement of Afghanistan, a militant group in Central Asia. Russia has stepped up its defenses in Central Asia and has claimed thousands of ISIS fighters were in northern Afghanistan

Moscow has twice this year hosted meetings between the Taliban and prominent Afghan personalities.

MARK LEVIN: 9/11 ANNIVERSARY IS REMINDER WHY US SHOULD NEVER INVITE TALIBAN HERE

On Saturday, Trump announced he had called off secret meetings with Afghan government leaders and Taliban officials that were to take place at Camp David. The president noted that the Taliban had claimed responsibility for a recent attack in Kabul that left 12 dead, including an American soldier.”

“What kind of people would kill so many in order to seemingly strengthen their bargaining position?” Trump asked in a statement on Twitter, before adding that if the Taliban cannot agree to a cease-fire, “then they probably don’t have the power to negotiate a meaningful agreement anyway.”

While Washington has been seeking an exit to its longest war, the Taliban are at their strongest since their ouster in 2001 and hold sway over more than half the country, staging near-daily, deadly attacks across Afghanistan.

Earlier this year, the U.S. released a statement — signed by the U.S., China and Russia — supporting the efforts of peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad. It called for an agreement on troop withdrawal, Taliban antiterrorism guarantees, and a promise of intra-Afghan talks on the nation’s fate and cease-fire terms.
