Ecuador’s government flees capital as violent protests erupt in wake of fuel price hikes

Ecuador’s president is accusing his political rivals of trying to orchestrate a coup this week after violent protests tied to rising fuel prices forced his government to relocate away from the country’s capital.

Officials say about 350 people have been detained so far for blocking traffic, interrupting public services or attacking police following President Lenín Moreno’s decision to end government subsidies that have been keeping fuel prices down. Moreno says the subsidies have cost the government heavily in recent years and dropped them in a bid to stimulate Ecuador’s economy, but scenes coming out of Quito showed protesters throwing stones and marching through the streets in response.

“[This] is not a protest of social dissatisfaction faced with a government decision but the looting, vandalism and violence show there is an organized political motive to destabilize the government,” the embattled leader said during a televised address Monday, according to The Guardian.

He went on to accuse political rivals of attempting a coup and joining in on the protests but did not provide any evidence. Moreno also said he moved his government from Quito to Guayaquil for the time being.

Crowds in Quito on Monday broke into the comptroller general’s office and vandalized the National Assembly building in what its Congress described afterward as an “attempt to take over the seat of parliament,” The Guardian reported.

The protests also resulted in the death of one man who was struck by a car, the newspaper added, citing Ecuador’s government.

Moreno’s announcement last week to end the subsidies doubled the price of diesel overnight and sharply raised gasoline prices. It initially triggered a strike by transport workers that ended a few days later, but clashes involving youths and also members of Ecuador’s indigenous communities have kept up pressure on the government.

The government says economic paralysis from the street protests is costing the country $70 million a day, a situation that is likely to fuel public dissatisfaction the longer it continues. In addition to the elimination of the subsidies, Moreno has announced labor reforms meant to help stimulate the economy.

The widespread unrest reflects a sense of alienation among many people who were already suffering economic hardship. Economic problems in Ecuador stem from the high public indebtedness Moreno inherited from the 2007-2017 administration of President Rafael Correa.

UK’s Johnson tells Merkel a Brexit deal is ‘essentially’ impossible: report

Boris Johnson, the embattled British prime minister, told Germany’s Angela Merkel that as long as the European Union insists Northern Ireland stays in the EU’s customs union, a Brexit deal is “essentially impossible,” Bloomberg reported early Tuesday.

Last week, Johnson’s government delivered a new proposal to the EU, focused on maintaining an open border between the U.K.’s Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland — the key sticking point to a Brexit deal. The U.K. proposes to do that by keeping Northern Ireland closely aligned to EU rules for trade in goods, possibly for an extended period.

Johnson made the comment in a phone call with Merkel,  Bloomberg reported.

The bloc says the proposals don’t fulfil the U.K.’s commitment to a frictionless border, because there would have to be customs checks on some goods, and because the arrangement would be subject to review by politicians in Northern Ireland.

Johnson has urged EU leaders to compromise and sit down for face-to-face talks. So far, the EU is resisting, saying the U.K. must show more “realism” in its proposals.

German bank robber’s 20-hour-long court rant cut off by judge before prison sentence, report says

A German man jailed for committing three bank robberies reportedly gave a very rambling, 20-hour-long statement before his sentencing Monday that included anecdotes about his fitness routine and accounts from his criminal career.

A judge in Hamburg’s district court cut off Michael Jauernik before sentencing him to 12-and-a-half years in prison for three bank heists between 2011 and 2018, in which he shot one employee, The Guardian reported.

She said she regretted not interrupting Jauernik, 71, earlier for his repetitions and “excessive digressions.”

Jauernik started robbing banks in the 1970s and served several jail terms. He gained some notoriety in the 1980s when he was dubbed the “Thursday robber” for holding up a string of banks shortly before closing time on Thursdays.

During his prolonged statement, he reportedly said he was “more intelligent and clever than any employee of the criminal police agency” and bragged about his daily fitness regimen in jail. He also boasted about doing situps three times each day and doing 5-K runs, the report added.

Jauernik said he went back to robbing banks after working as a night porter where he found his pension payments “pitiful.” He justified the robberies by insinuating he targeted corrupt financial institutions.

“I didn’t rob supermarkets or old women,” Jauernik said.

The unnamed judge said it was unlikely he would be rehabilitated.

“We are sure that you will still think it legitimate to rob banks and threaten people in 12 years’ time,” she said. “You suffer from a narcissistic personality disorder, which was on display to everyone who followed the main trial,” she said.

Climate protests in Europe result in more than 250 arrests, criticism from German official

European authorities say they arrested more than 250 climate activists Monday as the Extinction Rebellion group kicked off its latest wave of protests, staging a series of demonstrations that one top German official criticized as being partly “dangerous.”

The group, which is seeking urgent action against climate change, is trying to block roads in major European cities to draw attention to its demands. In London, officials say they have taken 276 demonstrators into custody, while three have been arrested in Spain for allegedly resisting orders from anti-riot police.

“We all share an interest in climate protection, and the Paris climate targets are our standard in this,” Helge Braun, the chief of staff for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, told ZDF television.  “If you demonstrate against or for that, that is OK.

“But if you announce dangerous interventions in road traffic or things like this, of course that is just not on,” he added. He also dismissed the protesters’ idea of declaring a “climate emergency,” saying that the German constitution doesn’t provide for such a thing and it doesn’t translate into “concrete action.”

In Berlin, around 1,000 people blocked the Grosser Stern, a traffic circle in the middle of the German capital’s Tiergarten park dominated by the landmark Victory Column. That protest began before dawn.

At lunchtime on Monday, another 300 people blocked Berlin’s central Potsdamer Platz, placing couches, tables, chairs and flowerpots on the road. Police said the protests were peaceful.

In London, demonstrators playing steel drums marched as they kicked off two weeks of activities designed to disrupt the city.

“In the UK, we will peacefully shut down all roads into Westminster in Central London and non-violently disrupt the government until our leaders agree to TAKE EMERGENCY ACTION NOW,” the group says on its website. “Other non-violent actions will target corporations, ministries and infrastructure that maintain our toxic system.”

For months, Extinction Rebellion has been demanding that the British Parliament “act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.” They also have pushed lawmakers there to “create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.”

London police say they arrested members of the group as they blocked Victoria Embankment, outside the Ministry of Defense.

Among those arrested was 81-year-old Sarah Lasenby, a retired social worker from Oxford.

“It is imperative the government should take serious actions and put pressure on other states and global powers to radically reduce the use of fossil fuels,” she told the Associated Press.

In Amsterdam, hundreds of demonstrators blocked a major road outside the Rijksmuseum, one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, and set up tents. The protest went ahead despite a city ban on activists gathering on the road and the protesters ignored police calls for them to move to a nearby square.

A few hundred other protesters camped out in 40 tents at the gates of Spain’s Ministry of Ecological Transition.

And around 1,000 protesters blocked the area around Chatelet in central Paris and vowed to stay at least the night in the makeshift camp they had pitched. Some were seated, some chained to a barrel.

Boris Johnson says Trump intervention possible in case of US diplomat’s wife who fled UK after fatal crash

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday he plans to speak with the U.S. ambassador to the U.K. – and even raised the possibility of involving President Trump – after an American diplomat’s wife involved in a deadly wrong-way crash fled Britain amid a debate about her diplomatic immunity.

The Aug. 27 accident killed 19-year-old Harry Dunn when his motorcycle collided with a car near RAF Croughton, a British military base near Oxford that’s home to a signals intelligence station operated by the U.S. Air Force. Northamptonshire Police said the 42-year-old woman was being “treated as a suspect,” and indicated she didn’t plan to leave the country in the near future.

The woman was eventually identified as Anne Sacoolas, a mother of three and the wife of Jonathan Sacoolas, who works at the U.S. base, according to Sky News, which first reported the woman’s name Sunday. Johnson later confirmed the ID.

During a visit to a hospital on Monday, Johnson told reporters he doesn’t think it is right to “use the process of diplomatic immunity for this type of purpose.”

“I hope that Anne Sacoolas will come back and will engage properly with the processes of law as they are carried out in this country,” he said.

The prime minister said he planned to raise the issue with U.S. Ambassador Woody Johnson on Monday and intended to go up the chain to President Trump if need be.

“I hope it will be resolved very shortly,” Johnson said. “If we can’t resolve it then, of course, I will be raising it myself personally with the White House.”

Sacoolas, whose photo was revealed for the first time Monday by the British press, was about to be formally interviewed by authorities at the time she left the country, officials said.

US DIPLOMAT’S WIFE LEAVES THE UK AS POLICE PROBE DEADLY AUGUST CRASH

The U.S. Embassy in London offered its “deepest sympathies” to the family of the deceased and said it will continue to be in “close contact” with the appropriate British authorities.

“Any questions regarding a waiver of the immunity with regard to our diplomats and their family members overseas in a case like this receive intense attention at senior levels and are considered carefully given the global impact such decisions carry,” a U.S. Embassy spokesperson told the Associated Press. “Immunity is rarely waived.”

Diplomatic immunity usually only covers diplomats and their dependents based in London. But a special agreement has been in place since 1994 that covers diplomats working at RAF Croughton, according to Sky News.

The parents of the 19-year-old killed in the crash said Monday they just want to talk to Sacoolas and do not “necessarily” want her to be punished.

“We’re not a horrible family, we’re a usual U.K. family that just need to put a face to what we have now is a name,” Dunn’s mother, Charlotte Charles, told Sky News. “Talk to her, find out how she’s feeling. She’s got to be suffering as well, she’s a mom.”

Charles added that police had CCTV video of the 42-year-old pulling out of the RAF base and driving on the wrong side of the road before the deadly crash.

“Harry had no chance of avoiding her. She traveled from around 350 to 400 yards on the wrong side of the road,” she told Sky News. “It was a head-on collision.”

Harry’s father, Tim Dunn, said that Sacoolas was “compliant” with police and “admitted at the time she was wrong.”

“We know from the police she was going to stay in the country, she was permitted to stay here for three years,” he told Sky News. “And then we didn’t think this would be what is happening, so to hear the news a few weeks after the funeral was devastating.”

Northamptonshire Police said Saturday they are exploring “all opportunities through diplomatic channels” as part of their investigation.

“Harry Dunn’s family deserve justice and in order to achieve this, a full and thorough investigation, with the assistance of all parties involved, needs to take place,” Superintendent Sarah Johnson said in a statement.

An Iranian Instagram star known worldwide for her creepy transformation into a zombie Angelina Jolie was arrested for “encouraging youth corruption,” according to a report on Sunday.

Sahar Tabar, 22, was detained on the orders of Tehran’s guidance court, which deals with “cultural crimes and social and moral corruption,” according to Agence France-Presse.

She faces charges of blasphemy, inciting violence, gaining income through inappropriate means, and encouraging youths to corruption.

The young woman shot to fame in 2017 after  claiming that she’d had 50 surgeries to look like her favorite Hollywood star — and posting selfies showing her hollow cheeks, inflated lips and cartoonish upturned nose.

She later revealed the shocking, emaciated look was actually created with the help of makeup and digital editing.

The mother of a 19-year-old who died in August when his motorcycle collided with a car near a British military base has appealed to President Trump to waive the diplomatic immunity of the crash’s main suspect.

Police in Northamptonshire said they had been treating an unidentified 42-year-old woman as a suspect and that she had indicated she didn’t plan to leave Britain. The woman has been widely described across British media as the wife of a U.S. diplomat.

Authorities reportedly claim that the suspect was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time of the crash.

The accident on Aug. 27 killed 19-year-old Harry Dunn after his motorcycle collided with a car near RAF Croughton, a British military base near Oxford that’s home to a signals intelligence station operated by the U.S. Air Force.

“President Trump, please listen,” Charlotte Charles, Dunn’s mother, said, according to the New York Times. “We’re a family in ruin. We’re broken. We can’t grieve. Please, please, please let her get back on a plane.

Police said they were preparing to arrest and formally interview the woman, who has not been officially named.

Embassy spokesperson said.

“Immunity is rarely waived.”

British man, wife abducted in Philippines home, police say

A 70-year-old British man and his Filipino wife were abducted by at least four gunmen from their beach resort home in the Philippines last Friday, police and military officials said.

Police Cpl. Jairus delos Reyes said the suspects, who were armed with pistols, took Allan Hyrons and his wife, Wilma, from a hut in their resort at nightfall and dragged them into two motorboats in Tukuran, in the province of Zamboanga del Sur.

Several young men in a nearby bar witnessed the abduction.

No group has claimed responsibility for the latest abduction in the south, where kidnappings for ransom by Muslim militants and other armed groups have long been a security concern and have discouraged tourism, trade, and investment.

Military offensives against ransom-seeking militant groups such as Abu Sayyaf have reduced abductions in recent years, but they have continued to take place.

Investigators said they also were trying to verify the reported abductions of three Indonesian fishermen last week off Malaysia’s Sabah state on northern Borneo, near the sea border with the southern Philippines, where Abu Sayyaf gunmen have staged kidnappings in the past.
