American man gored in the neck during Spain’s running of the bulls said it felt ‘ like being hit by a car or a truck’

An American lawyer gored in the neck during the famous running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain on Sunday said he felt like he was “hit by a car or a truck” the moment he was struck by a 1,000 pound bull.

Jamie Alvarez, a San Francisco resident who works as a public defender in Santa Clara, was participating in the first run of this year’s San Fermin festival when he nearly lost his life after being struck by a stray bull he never saw coming.

RUNNING OF THE BULLS LEADS TO AT LEAST 5 GORED ON FIRST DAY OF PAMPLONA, SPAIN, FESTIVAL

“The joy and the excitement of being in the bullring quickly turned into a scare, into real fear for my life,” Alvarez, 46, told The Associated Press Monday from his hospital bed.

“In the course of a few seconds, a million thoughts came to my mind, and that of dying was definitely one of them.”

Alvarez said he ran most of the 913-yard course when the pack of bulls caught up to where he was. He climbed up a fence to wait for the danger to pass and returned to the arena shortly after to shoot a victory video, “a 5-second video scene to say ‘Here I am, I did it.’”

That’s when a stray bull came charging at him, striking him in the neck.

“The impact was unlike anything I’ve ever felt. It was like being hit by a car or a truck,” he said. “It was scary.”

Alvarez was gored deep in his neck, fracturing his cheekbone. He said he was told it was “beyond miraculous” that his jugular vein or major arteries were not severed in the accident.

After being pulled from the arena by spectators, Alvarez was taken to hospital where he underwent a nearly three hour. He was reported in stable condition on Monday and could be released as early as Tuesday.

Two other Americans have been injured so far this year. Video footage showed how a bull approached Aaron Froelicher of Florence, Kentucky, from the back, tossed him into the air and gored him in the left thigh. Authorities said the 23-year-old remained hospitalized Monday while recovering from surgery.

The running of the bulls — and the nine days of seamless partying that accompanies the festival — draws about 1 million spectators to the city of 200,000 every year. The bulls chosen to race in Pamplona often weigh in the range of 1,102 to 1,323 pounds.

The extradition bill that sparked Hong Kong’s largest protests in more than a decade was declared dead on Tuesday by the former British colony’s embattled leader who called the process a “total failure.”

Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s chief executive, told reporters that the plan is dead, Reuters reported. There have been widespread calls for Lam to step down and her political fate is far from certain.

She faced tough criticism after insisting that the measure—which called for criminal suspects in Hong Kong to be extradited to mainland China—would help protect human rights in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory.

Critics could not have been more opposed to the measure and Lam’s theory. They said Beijing enforces arbitrary detentions and torture, a claim China denied.

PUZDER: PROTESTERS ARE FIGHTING FOR THEIR FREEDOM. US SHOULD SUPPORT

Hong Kong was guaranteed the right to retain its own social, legal and political systems for 50 years under an agreement reached before its 1997 return to China from British rule. But China’s ruling Communist Party has been seen as increasingly reneging on that agreement by pushing through unpopular legal changes.

An “underground terror tunnel dug from Gaza into Israel” was discovered in the southern part of the Gaza strip, Israel Defense Forces announced on Monday.

“IDF troops just revealed an underground terror tunnel dug from Gaza into Israel,” The Israel Defense Forces tweeted on Monday. “How’d we find it? While building an underground security barrier. Why are we building an underground barrier? To stop Gaza terrorists from digging tunnels into Israel. Guess it’s working.”

They made the discovery during construction of an underground barrier around the coastal enclave five years after the start of an operation geared toward finding and destroying such tunnels, The Times of Israel reported, citing the IDF.

It was not clear how long ago the tunnel had been built.

“At this time, IDF soldiers are conducting an investigation of the passage. More information will be provided shortly,” the army said Monday.

The tunnel did not represent a threat and was “being taken care of by the IDF,” The Times of Israel reported, citing the Eshkol Regional Council, covering the area where the tunnel was found.

The council added that the tunnel was detected because of “groundbreaking technological defenses that are used along the Gaza border to protect our communities.”

This cross-border tunnel reportedly was the 18th discovered since the end of the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, also known as Operation Protective Edge.

Israel’s military has been investing extensive resources to find these tunnels and have destroyed 16, including one that stretched into both Israel and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Authorities in Turkey reportedly discovered $72 million worth of a radioactive element — used in nuclear reactors and found in the fallout of nuclear explosions — from a car.

The 18.1 grams of californium were seized in the northern Bolu province of the country, law enforcement officials said Saturday, according to the Daily Sabah. Five people were being investigated in regards to the incident.

The substance was seized by local anti-smuggling authorities and sent to the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority, officials said.

Californium is a rare, man-made radioactive element. First created in 1950 at the University of California at Berkeley, it’s used primarily in nuclear reactors. Only the U.S. and Russia have created californium.

San Francisco man gored in neck during Pamplona bull run, officials say

A San Francisco man was gored in the neck and hospitalized after Friday’s opening of the San Fermin festival in Spain – better known as the running of the bulls, city officials said.

The 46-year-old San Franciscan was gored in the neck in Pamplona’s bullring, at the end of the 930-yard course. His injuries required surgery, the regional government reported.

The man was one of two Americans gored in the northern city of Pamplona. The other, a 23-year old man from Kentucky, was reportedly gored in the thigh and hospitalized. Neither of their identities was released.

Three other people were injured. City officials said a 40-year-old Spanish man was gored in the thigh and two young Spanish men sustained head injuries.

The running of the bulls draws about 1 million spectators every year. During the nine-day San Fermin fiesta, six bulls are run every morning in the city’s narrow streets and then killed in afternoon bullfights.

Greek election: Conservative party regains control, ousts left-wing PM

Conservative opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis comfortably won Greece’s parliamentary elections Sunday, delivering a stinging blow to leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras after a tumultuous four years in office as the country struggled through a crippling financial crisis.

With more than 90% of votes counted, Mitsotakis’ New Democracy party had 39.8% of the votes, compared to 31.5% for Tsipras’ left-wing Syriza party.

The extreme right-wing Golden Dawn party, founded by neo-Nazi supporters, narrowly failed to make the 3% threshold needed to enter parliament — a huge fall of support for a party that had become the third-largest in the Greek legislature during the country’s financial crisis.

The results indicated Greek voters bucked a recent trend in Europe of citizens rejecting the political mainstream and turning to populist and euroskeptic parties.

“I asked for a strong mandate to change Greece. You offered it generously,” Mitsotakis said in his victory speech. “From today, a difficult but beautiful fight begins.”

AGING VOTERS IN GREECE KEEP TRADITIONAL CAMPAIGNING ALIVE

Mitsotakis. 51, vowed to abide by his campaign pledges to cut taxes, attract investment and improve the job market. He had been ahead in opinion polls for three years and managed to build a sizeable lead.

“Greeks deserve better and the time has come for us to prove it,” he said.

Mitsotakis was scheduled to be officially sworn in as prime minister Monday, and was expected to announce his Cabinet later in the day.

Tsipras conceded defeat and phoned Mitsotakis to congratulate him.

“The citizens have made their choice. We fully respect the popular vote,” Tsipras said in a speech from central Athens.

He said his party now would work to protect the rights of working Greeks as “a responsible but dynamic opposition” to the government.

Tsipras said he hoped New Democracy’s return to government “will not lead to vengeance … particularly toward the significant achievements to protect the social majority and the workers.”

The election was the first since Greece emerged from three international bailouts that were dependent on successive governments implementing strict austerity measures, including major tax hikes and spending cuts. The financial crisis saw unemployment and poverty levels skyrocket and the economy shrink by a quarter.

Mitsotakis, the son of a former prime minister, brother of a former foreign minister and uncle to a newly elected mayor of Athens, fought during the campaign to shed the image of family privilege.

He pledged to make Greece more business-friendly, attract foreign investment, to modernize the country’s notorious bureaucracy and to cut taxes.

Tsipras, 44, called the election three months ahead of schedule after Syriza suffered a severe defeat in European Union and local elections in May and early June.

GREEK FIGHTER JETS OVERFLY NORTH MACEDONIA UNDER NATO TESTS

He had led his small Coalition of the Radical Left, or Syriza, party to power in 2015 on promises to repeal the austerity of Greece’s first two bailouts. But after months of tough negotiations with international creditors that saw Greece nearly crash out of the European Union’s joint currency, he was forced to change tack and sign up to a third bailout that imposed spending cuts and tax hikes.

He also cemented a deal with neighboring North Macedonia under which that country changed its name from plain “Macedonia.” Although praised by Western allies, the deal angered many Greeks, who consider use of the term by their neighbor to harbor expansionist aims on the Greek province of the same name.

Iran to enrich uranium ‘based on our needs,’ in defiance of 2015 nuclear accord

In a second breach of the 2015 nuclear agreement it signed with world powers, Iran on Sunday said it will raise its enrichment of uranium.

Iran will go beyond the limit of 3.67 percent enrichment to a new percentage “based on our needs,” government spokesman Ali Rabiei said at a news conference, without specifying a new limit.

The announcement was expected to further heighten tensions between Tehran and the U.S.

GOP SENATORS URGE TRUMP TO REJECT IRAN’S ‘NUCLEAR BLACKMAIL,’ SEEK TO ‘SNAPBACK’ SANCTIONS AT THE UN

The move comes one year after President Trump announced that the U.S. would leave the accord that the Obama administration and other governments had entered with Iran’s leadership.

On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron told his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, by phone that he was trying to find a way to resume dialogue between Iran and Western partners by July 15, the Associated Press reported.

Previously, Iran admitted breaking the deal’s 661-pound limit on its low-enriched uranium stockpile. Experts warn that higher enrichment and a growing stockpile of uranium would make an atomic bomb possible sooner for Iran.

The 2015 deal’s proponents say the accord was designed to prevent Iran from developing a bomb – which Iran has claimed it wasn’t interested in building anyway.

Prior to Sunday’s announcement, Iran had warned Europe that it would begin pulling away from the deal in response to sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on Iran’s economy and its top officials. Tehran is hoping that accord signees Russia, China and Europe can help provide relief from the U.S. sanctions, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran began rising in May when the U.S. deployed additional troops and military capabilities to the Mideast. That was soon followed by mysterious oil tanker blasts near the Strait of Hormuz, for which some U.S. officials have blamed Tehran, and Iran shooting down a U.S. military drone – which nearly prompted a U.S. military response by President Trump.

At Washington’s urging, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) plans to meet Wednesday to review Iran’s recent actions and possibly issue a formal censure, the Journal reported.

Melania Trump honored with odd statue likened to a ‘scarecrow’ in her Slovenian home town

First Lady Melania Trump’s Slovenian home town is paying a tribute to her as a “Slovenian hero” with a wood-carved statue that has raised some eyebrows, with some decrying it as a “scarecrow.”

The life-size statue was officially unveiled on Friday on the outskirts of Sevnica. It was first envisioned by Brad Downey, a 39-year-old American artist.

Downey, who told AFP that it’s the first monument dedicated to the First Lady in the world, commissioned a local artist to carve a tree using a chainsaw and shows the wife of President Trump in a blue dress raising her left hand in a waving motion.

But the sculpture has attracted some detractors who say it looks more like a “scarecrow” than a true representation of the First Lady.

“I can understand why people might think that this falls short as a description of her physical appearance,” Downey told AFP, but said the statue was “absolutely beautiful.”

The town of Sevnica has become an overnight tourist attraction following Trump’s election into office in 2016, with some journalists looking for insight into the first lady.

The town welcomed the opportunity to cater to the tourists, reportedly offering a series of Melania Trump-branded food and other items.

The actual sculptor is Ales Zupevc, a local artist also known as Maxi. Downey told the AFP that conversations with the artist helped him to see Trump’s ancestral town through local eyes.

“You see this river that she would have seen as a child, you see the mountains,” he told the outlet.

“If the monument was meant to be a parody, then the artist has been successful,” Nika, an architecture student told AFP. “We in Sevnica can only laugh and, at the same time, hold our heads in our hands over their [the Trumps’] catastrophic reputation.”
