Hong Kong protesters defy mask ban in new round of demonstrations, as city braces for more

Hong Kong demonstrators defied a new face mask ban as they took to the streets Saturdays in relatively quieter protests following an evening of violence and unrest.

Marchers – wearing blue doctor’s masks – told reporters that the protest movement was merely harboring its strength for the long haul as Hong Kong’s most disruptive crisis since its “one nation, two systems” agreement with the Chinese in 1997.

Shops and banks were shuttered. Lines formed at cash machines, while the entire transit network of subways and trains that usually handles more than 4 million trips a day was closed.

HONG KONG’S LAM BANS MASKS IN HARDENING STANCE ON PROTESTS

The government’ initiated the ban after widespread violence in the city on Tuesday, which marred China’s National Day and ended in blood. Two teenagers – 14 and 18 years old – have been shot by live ammunition by police.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam is blamed for sparking the movement with a now-abandoned bill that would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited for trial in Communist Party-controlled courts in mainland China.

On Friday, she announced the criminalization of the masks at rallies, as well as denounced violence.

“People are asking can Hong Kong go back to normal? Is Hong Kong still a place where we can have our sweet home?” Lam asked. “We must stop the violence. Now, it’s all over Hong Kong.”

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: HONG KONG PROTESTERS VOW TO KEEP FIGHTING AS CLASHES GROW VIOLENT

Lam added that the ban targeted violent protesters and rioters and “will be an effective deterrent to radical behavior.”

But, analysts cautioned that the use of the Emergency Ordinance for the first time in over half a decade set a dangerous precedent.

Those who break the regulation will face a year in jail. Police said no arrests had been made so far on the anti-mask ban but did not explain why.

Before Lam spoke, thousands of masked protesters marched through city streets, chanting slogans for greater democracy including “Wearing a mask is not a crime.” Cars stuck in the chaos honked their support.

In a televised address broadcast on Saturday, a solemn Lam described Hong Kong as “semi-paralyzed.”

Even though many blamed Lam, some are turning to the government’s side in the wake of the riots.

“Protesters want democracy and freedom, but don’t they have freedom now? People can go anywhere and do things freely,” 67-year-old retiree Peter Tai said. “Freedom is more valuable than democracy. I hope these young people don’t do things they’ll regret forever.”

Canadian man trying to rest calls 911 after Amber Alert wakes him up

A 70-year-old man in Canada was arrested this week after complaining to police about receiving an Amber Alert on his phone.

Douglas Bagshaw was taken into custody on a mischief charge after calling 911 on Tuesday to say he was upset about the alert on his phone because he was trying to rest, CTV News reports.

He was accused of purposely tying up emergency lines, Hamilton police said Thursday.

“Simply put, he was angry about receiving the Amber Alert on his phone because he was trying to rest,” Detective Sgt. Lisa Chambers said, according to CBC.

“And then he further told us he would continue to call in response to the ongoing alerts,” she said.

The Amber Alert was issued after five children went missing in Ontario. Police said they issued the alert out of concern for the children’s safety, CBC reported.

The children were found safe Wednesday and police credited the alert with providing information that led to them being found.

“It’s very frustrating,” Chamber told the news outlet. “I never thought the day would come where I’d have to explain to an adult the importance of not tying up a 911 line and the importance of an Amber Alert in locating a child who may be in danger.”

German intelligence reports on Iran’s illicit nuclear activities met with silence from European powers

Westlake Legal Group ContentBroker_contentid-edf2f049b8384a5da0db84744b12743b German intelligence reports on Iran's illicit nuclear activities met with silence from European powers fox-news/world/world-regions/germany fox-news/world/world-regions/europe fox-news/world/conflicts/iran fox news fnc/world fnc da17fd0f-7093-55c1-9cc3-faab67fff9f0 Benjamin Weinthal article

Serious questions have emerged about the International Atomic Energy Agency’s and the European powers’ silence regarding a series of German intelligence reports documenting the Iranian regime’s illegal attempts to obtain nuclear weapons technology as late as 2018.

Emily B. Landau, director of the Arms Control and Regional Security Project at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, told Fox News that the material in the German documents necessitate “confronting Iran with the intelligence and asking hard questions.”

“When will the international powers finally relate to these German intelligence reports that have been coming out periodically, detailing Iran’s continued procurement efforts?” Landau said, adding that “these efforts are not covered in IAEA reports that [nuclear] deal supporters love to quote to prove Iran’s ‘compliance.’’’

IRAN SEEKING TO EXPAND MILITARY PROGRAM TO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION

The United States withdrew from the 2015 Iran deal because, according to the Trump administration, it would not stop Tehran from building nuclear weapons.

Fox News reviewed a newly published report from the intelligence agency of the German state of Hesse in which officials wrote that “against this background [of proliferation], weapons of mass destruction continued to be a powerful political instrument during the reporting period, which could shake the stability of the entire state structure in both regional and international crisis situations.”

The report noted that “in particular, states such as Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, and Syria attempted to acquire and redistribute such weapons in the context of proliferation, for example by concealing transport routes via third countries.”

Visiting academics from these countries are connected to “proliferation conduct” that is coordinated by intelligence services from those countries, said the report.

“An example of this is the field of electrical engineering combined with the use of centrifuges in the process of uranium enrichment,” the document said. “Here, again and again, there are suspicions that foreign intelligence services put pressure on their own visiting scientists to obtain the desired technical know-how.”

IRAN’S ROUHANI LEFT TRUMP HANGING IN PHONE CALL, REPORT SAYS

Iran was also named as connected to illicit espionage within Germany’s higher education system.

“Another example of intelligence control is the exchange of research among university institutes in the chemical-biological process sector,” the report reads.

The findings in the Hesse report mirror other German intelligence data that Fox News first reported on in May that state Iran is a “country of risk” that is “making efforts to supplement its arsenal of conventional weapons with weapons of mass destruction.”

When asked whether the IAEA had reviewed the German intelligence documents, Fredrik Dahl, an IAEA spokesman, responded: “We have no comment.”

Authorities in Hesse were also mum on the subject.

When asked whether the state’s intelligence agency had forwarded its findings to the IAEA, the UN, and the United Nations Security Council, Carsten Rauch, a spokesman for the Hesse domestic intelligence agency, told Fox News: “Beyond the information contained in our annual report, the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution of Hesse cannot provide you with information in the sense of your request.”

IRAN’S TOP GENERAL SAYS WIPING ISRAEL OFF MAP IS AN ‘ACHIEVABLE GOAL’

Meanwhile, Angela Pley, a spokeswoman for Germany’s federal intelligence agency told Fox News: “The constitutional protection authorities have no knowledge about actual violations by Iran of the JCPOA [the Iran nuclear deal] in Germany. In contrast, the federal and state constitutional protection authorities report in their annual reports on Iran’s proliferation-relevant procurement activities for its missile program, which is not covered by the JCPOA. Against this background, no information was provided to the IAEA, the UN Security Council or the UN.”

The JCPOA is the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the formal name of the accord that is supposed to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief.

Local intelligence reports across Germany appear to contradict Pley’s contention that Iran’s alleged illicit activity is related only to its missile programs. When asked how the federal intelligence agency knew there were no violations of the JCPOA if the IAEA, UN and UN Security Council had not reviewed the intelligence data, Pley did not comment.

Uwe Becker, Hesse state’s commissioner for Jewish life and the fight against antisemitism, told Fox News that German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s administration and the European Union should pull the plug on the Iran nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions on Tehran.

“The current escalation with Israel should be reason enough for Germany to advocate the … Iran nuclear agreement, which has been undermined by Iran…, [as] dead, and for the necessary sanctions against Tehran to become effective again in their entirety,” Becker said. “It is not a question of a policy aimed against the Iranian people, who are deprived of important rights to freedom by their own government, but of a clear position directed at the political leadership in Tehran.”

US ENVOY TO GERMANY BLASTS IRAN FOREIGN MINISTER’S ‘HYPOCRISY’ AMID CONTROVERSIAL OVER VISITING SICK DIPLOMAT

Landau, the arms control expert, said, “First, it is important that this intel be widely published and that it become part of the public debate over Iran, as it indicates that Iran has not complied with its commitment not to work on military nuclear capability, (this in contrast to deal supporters, who claim on basis of IAEA reports since the nuclear deal that Iran has complied fully, and only the US broke its commitment….)

“From my perspective, most important thing at this point is to have it widely known that Iran did not stop everything in 2015 [when the nuclear deal was reached], because the debate in Europe ignores this,” adding, “The point is that it [Iran] has continued these efforts well after signed the JCPOA [was reached].”

Landau noted that the Iran deal “set up a special channel regarding procurement for checking issues of this sort,” that is of the sort detailed in the German intelligence documents. “The problem is that the deliberations there get close to zero attention.”

A follow-up Fox News query to Fredrik Dahl, the IAEA spokesman, as to whether the agency will demand to review the German intelligence data went unanswered.

When asked about the Iran nuclear deal, a spokesman for Merkel’s government referenced a September 23 joint statement from Germany, Britain, and France, that stated: “We recall our continued commitment to the JCPOA, agreed with Iran on July 14th, 2015, and unanimously endorsed by the UN Security Council. We urge Iran once again to reverse its decisions to reduce compliance with the deal and to adhere fully to its commitments under it. We call upon Iran to cooperate fully with the IAEA in the framework of the JCPOA and its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.”

Last month, the Merkel government promoted and participated in a pro-Iranian regime business forum in Berlin, sparking intense criticism from US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell.

“Iran perpetuates gross human rights abuses against its own citizens, has planned and carried out terror attacks and assassinations on European soil and is facilitating Assad’s war crimes in Syria. Now is not the time to promote business deals that will only send euros to the regime’s coffers at the expense of the Iranian people,” said Grenell, a former Fox News contributor.

The German foreign ministry sent Miguel Berger, the head of its Department of Economic and Sustainable Development, to deliver the greeting at the eighth “Banking and Business Forum Iran Europe” conference in Berlin.

Russia helping China build missile warning system, Putin says

Moscow has plans to help China build a system to help detect when an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is launched, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.

“This is a very serious thing that will radically enhance China’s defense capability,” Putin said at an international affairs conference.

The only countries that currently have capabilities to detect ballistic missile launches are the U.S. and Russia, as the systems involve space satellites and ground-based radars.

PUTIN AGAIN THREATENS TO DEVELOP PREVIOUSLY BANNED MISSILES IF US DOES

Putin’s remarks signal that the two nations are increasing their military ties and defense cooperation, something the United States is keeping an eye on, officials have said.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper told Fox News in August that China is the Pentagon’s “number one priority,” and that the United States is watching Beijing “very carefully” in order to safeguard America.

Esper also spoke about Russia’s nuclear ambitions, saying Moscow was “clearly […] trying to expand their strategic nuclear arsenal […] to deal with the United States.”

Putin has threatened that Russia will develop short- and intermediate-range land-launched nuclear missiles if it got word the United States had started building such weapons.

The Pentagon chief also warned about Russian and Chinese ambitions to overtake U.S. systems in space and threaten not just the U.S. military but also the economy and commerce.

The United States Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia, has reopened after being closed for 28 years, officials said Wednesday.

“The reestablishment of Embassy Mogadishu is another step forward in the resumption of regular U.S.-Somali relations, symbolizing the strengthening of U.S.-Somalia relations and advancement of stability, development and peace for Somalia and the region,” the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy closed on Jan. 5, 1991, after Somalia became engulfed in a civil war and the regime of Siad Barre was overthrown.

The United States reestablished a permanent diplomatic presence in Mogadishu back in December, operated out of Nairobi, Kenya.

“Today we reaffirm the relations between the American people and the Somali people, and our two nations,” Ambassador Donald Yamamoto said. “It is a significant and historic day that reflects Somalia’s progress in recent years, and another step forward in regularizing U.S. diplomatic engagement in Mogadishu since recognizing the federal government of Somalia in 2013.”

“U.S. Embassy Mogadishu will act to enhance cooperation, advance U.S. national strategic interests and support our overall security, political and economic development goals and objectives,” the ambassador added.

The U.S. “remains a strong partner to Somalia in its effort to build a stable, credible, and democratic country,” the embassy said.

AL-SHABAB EXTREMISTS ATTACK US MILITARY BASE IN SOMALIA, OFFICIALS SAY

The Al Qaeda-linked al-Shabab extremist group has been responsible for several attacks in Somalia this year, as it attempts to topple Somalia’s weak U.N.-backed government.

On Monday, militants staged an attack on a U.S. military base that is used to launch drone strikes.

In July, al-Shabab assailants attacked a Somali hotel and killed 26 people — including two Americans — in an all-night siege.

Jewish leader warns Christians amid rising anti-Semitism: ‘They start with Jews, but they never finish with Jews’

Jewish leaders met this week in New York to address a rise in anti-Semitic incidents over the past few years across the globe – especially in major cities in Europe – and warned that Jews will not be the only ones targeted in the future.

Joel Rubinfeld, president of the Jewish Coalition for Kurdistan, located in Belgium, told CBN News that anti-religious incidents will target Christians next.

CHRISTIAN DOCTOR OF 30 YEARS LOSES JOB FOR REFUSING TO USE TRANSGENDER PRONOUN

“More problems will come,” Rubinfeld told the Christian news site. “No, it’s just the beginning. We know this. We know that about anti-Semitic…the anti-Semite. They start with Jews. But they never finish with Jews.”

While the increase of anti-Semitic attacks is concentrated in Europe, Chrisitan persecution, according to watchdog group Open Doors USA, is prevalent in Asia, the Middle East and parts of Africa.

Rubinfeld’s comments come on the heels of an “unprecedented” report on anti-Semitism released by the United Nations last month that pointed out the frequency of incidents appears to be increasing.

ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACKS OF BOYS WHO WERE CALLED ‘JEWISH APE’ AND ‘DIRTY JEW’ SHOCK AUSTRALIA

It also linked anti-Semitism to denunciations of Israel as well as the Palestinian-led Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement, which calls for a boycott of all Israeli products.

The report stressed that the “prevalence of anti-Semitic attitudes and the risk of violence against Jewish individuals and sites ” are significant.

Specifically, the report mentioned the 2018 attack at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, where a gunman opened fire and killed 11 congregants “in the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history” and the Chabad of Poway synagogue shooting in April on the last day of Passover when a gunman killed one woman and injured three others, including the rabbi.

‘COLOR PURPLE’ ACTRESS SUES AFTER BEING FIRED FOR VIEWS EXPRESSED ON SOCIAL MEDIA: ‘THEY KNEW THAT I WAS CHRISTIAN’

Earlier this year, the New York Times, the Women’s March, as well as the Democratic Party have all had issues with anti-Semitism.

The NY Times announced in June that it will end political cartoons after “anti-Semitic” depictions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with President Trump.

Last month, the anti-Trump Women’s March severed ties with leaders, Linda Sarsour, Tamika Mallory, and Bob Bland, all accused of anti-Semitism, but then had to quickly drop a new replacement, Zahra Billoo, a lawyer and executive director of CAIR (the Council on American-Islamic Relation), whom the Anti-Defamation League described as having a “long history of deeply offensive and antisemitic statements.”

The Democratic Party has been grappling with an anti-Semitism problem especially this year following a series of comments from prominent freshman Democrats, particularly Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, that members of both parties have called anti-Semitic.

In June, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution explicitly and unequivocally condemning anti-Semitism, something the Democrat-controlled House failed to do earlier this year.

Iranian-flagged oil tanker previously seized for violating EU sanctions pictured off the coast of Syria again

An Iranian oil tanker detained in July over suspicions it was violating European Union sanctions by transporting oil to Syria has been pictured off the coast again, sparking concerns that the ship could be transferring cargo.

Satellite images released Thursday showed Iran’s Adrian Darya 1, formerly named the Grace 1, pictured the previous day alongside a smaller vessel, the Jasmine. The two ships can be seen tethered together by mooring lines while a crane is deployed on the starboard side of the tanker.

The Adrian Darya 1 was detained off the British overseas territory of Gibraltar in July while carrying $130 million in crude oil, on suspicion of breaking European Union sanctions by taking the oil to Syria. Gibraltar later released the tanker, after it said Iran promised the ship wouldn’t go to Syria.

But the vessel made its way toward the Syrian coast still.

The oil shipment website TankerTrackers.com said on Twitter on Tuesday that the Adrian Darya 1 was “postured in an STS (Ship-to-Ship) formation with a smaller Iranian-flagged Handymax (350K barrel capacity) tanker,” the Jasmine. It noted this was “not a confirmation of any oil transfer just yet. We’ll compare imagery later.” The image the website posted showed the two vessels off the coast of Syria.

However, the website said on Wednesday it was ending its public coverage of the Iranian tanker’s movements due to a tweet by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who used the image of the two tankers in a tweet of his own.

Pompeo tweeted that despite Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad “Zarif’s promise to the UK that the #AdrianDarya1 would not deliver oil to Syria, it is now transferring oil off the Syrian coast. Will the world hold Iran accountable if this oil is delivered to Syria?”

North Korea confirms underwater-launched missile, calls it ‘new phase’ for limiting outside threats

North Korea confirmed Thursday that its recent ballistic missile launch was successfully fired from below water, calling the test a “new phase” for containing outside threats.

The Hermit Kingdom launched the Pukguksong-3 missile Wednesday, its first underwater-launched ballistic missile test in three years, just days before stalled nuclear talks with Washington were scheduled to resume this weekend.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the missile test in the waters off its east coast was successful and “ushered in a new phase in containing the outside forces’ threat to (North Korea) and further bolstering its military muscle for self-defense.”

The missile flew about 280 miles and reached a maximum altitude of 565 miles, higher than any other short-range weapons North Korea test-fired in recent months, said South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo. The missile traveled twice as high as the orbit of the international space station before coming down in the Sea of Japan.

North Korea released photos of the missile rising from the sea in a cloud of flames and smoke. A launch platform could not be identified from the photos.

The KCNA didn’t elaborate on whether the missile was fired from a submarine, an escalation that had earlier concerned officials around the world.

However, U.S. officials told Fox News Wednesday that the missile was not fired from a submarine, as initially reported, suggesting it had been fired from a barge or a type of underwater platform.

The nation does not have operational submarines that can carry ballistic missiles in its small fleet.

North Korea has been trying to develop the ability to fire ballistic missiles from submarines, which are harder to detect in advance. However, testing appeared to have been tabled amid talks with Washington.

Nuclear talks have been stalled since February, when President Trump and Kim Jong Un walked away from their second summit without a deal.

Environmental protesters spray UK’s Treasury building with fake blood, four arrested

British police arrested four members of the climate activist group Extinction Rebellion on Thursday after they used a fire engine to spray the U.K.’s Treasury building with hundreds of gallons of fake blood.

The group said it carried out the protest because it wanted to raise awareness of the “inconsistency between the U.K. government’s insistence that the U.K. is a world leader in tackling climate breakdown while pouring vast sums of money into fossil exploration and carbon-intensive projects,” according to Sky News.

But their latest stunt had some mishaps.

Organizers said they sprayed 1,800 liters of red liquid colored with food dye at the Treasury building, yet most of it appeared to have ended up on the street and sidewalk, Sky News reports. At another point, the protesters lost control of the decommissioned fire engine’s hose, it added.

The Met Police later said it arrested three men and one woman on suspicion of criminal damage and that there were no injuries stemming from the incident.

Extinction Rebellion has made headlines over the last year for a series of demonstrations that have snarled traffic in cities like London.

The group says its next protest is scheduled for Monday next week – and the Met Police are working to free up as many officers as possible to deal with it.

“In the UK, we will peacefully shut down all roads into Westminster in Central London and non-violently disrupt the government until our leaders agree to TAKE EMERGENCY ACTION NOW,” reads a post on its website. “Other non-violent actions will target corporations, ministries, and infrastructure that maintain our toxic system.”

Extinction Rebellion, since it was formed late last year, has been demanding that Parliament act “to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025,” while also pushing for them to “create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.”

“Societal collapse and mass death are seen as inevitable by scientists and other credible voices, with human extinction also a possibility, if rapid action is not taken,” it has also warned.
