Dog killed in swan attack at park in Ireland

A dog was reportedly killed in Ireland on Saturday by a swan who beat the pet to death with its wings.

The cocker spaniel was swimming near a group of swans and their offspring, called cygnets, in a pond at Bush Park in Dublin, The Irish Times reported. One of the swans broke away, and apparently aimed for the dog just before 11 a.m.

“We started screaming at the swan, trying to distract it,” a man who was feeding ducks nearby said. “The poor dog didn’t realize what was going on and swam straight for the swan.”

“That stunned the poor thing,” he said. “Three or four more slaps and she was gone.”

The dog’s owner was extremely distraught, according to the witness and a park ranger. The dog’s body was reportedly removed from the pond using a paddle boat and net.

Pro-Brexit lawmakers turn back on European anthem ‘Ode to Joy’ at EU Parliament opening

Lawmakers from Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party turned their backs on the European anthem on Tuesday at the opening of the E.U. Parliament — and promising more to come if the United Kingdom doesn’t leave the bloc in October.

The Pro-Brexit lawmakers acted in unison in the parliament chamber as “Ode to Joy” was played by a jazz band as part of the chamber’s opening ceremonies.

“I’ll show respect for the anthem of any other country in the world, but not for a forced creation like this and I think we did the right thing,” Farage told Sky News after the protest.

TRUMP-BACKED BORIS JOHNSON CRUISES THROUGH FIRST ROUND OF VOTE TO SUCCEED THERESA MAY

The E.U. says the anthem “expresses the European ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity.”

The recently-formed Brexit Party shot to success in the U.K.’s European Parliament elections in May, coming first and sending 29 MEPs to the chamber, pledging to push forward the cause of delivering the 2016 referendum in which Brits voted to leave the E.U.

BORIS JOHNSON JOHNSON GIVES BIZARRE ANSWER TO INTERVIEW QUESTION

Farage took issue with remarks by President Antonio Tajani, who had warned lawmakers ahead of the anthem that: “If you listen to the anthem of another country you rise to your feet.”

“What is disrespectful is to take the ancient nation states of Europe and without asking anybody’s permission, turn it into a country because that’s what the president of the parliament called it this morning,” Farage said.

The Brexiteers weren’t the only Brits to take part in a stunt at the ceremony. The anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats appeared with yellow shirts that said “Stop Brexit” and “Bollocks to Brexit.”

Britain’s negotiations with the E.U. about its departure, scheduled for October 31, are on standstill while the ruling Conservative Party selects a new leader in the wake of Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to step down under pressure over her Brexit handling.

The favorite to succeed her, Boris Johnson, has promised to leave the bloc in October, even if it meant leaving without a formal withdrawal agreement with the E.U.

Farage promised Tuesday, according to the Times of London, that “if we have to stay longer than that they’ll know we’re here.”

Prosecutors in Iran are seeking the death penalty for several people who were arrested last year after allegedly spying on behalf of the U.S.

The suspects, accused of spying for the military and nuclear bodies, were arrested last August, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing state media.

IRAN SURPASSES URANIUM STOCKPILE LIMIT SET BY NUCLEAR DEAL

The Middle Eastern nation claims “tens of spies” in state bodies were taken into custody. A spokesperson reportedly said that an unclear number of suspects have been arrested in the last year, and face potential death sentences in military tribunals.

“Two of the defendants, who were not military, have received long prison terms,” the spokesperson, Gholamhossein Esmaili, added.

IRAN FIRES BACK AT WHITE HOUSE OVER CLAIMS IT HAS BEEN VIOLATING NUCLEAR DEAL FOR YEARS: ‘SERIOUSLY?’

Iran occasionally announces the detention of spies from foreign countries, including the U.S. and Israel.

In June, Iran state TV reported that Jalal Hajizavar, a former staff member of the Defense Military, was executed in a prison near Tehran for spying for the CIA.

The report claimed Hajizavar admitted in court that he was paid to spy for the CIA, and said the court sentenced Haizavar’s wife to 15 years in prison for her role in the espionage.

In 2016, Iran executed a nuclear scientist convicted of spying for the U.S.

The announcement from state media comes after Iran said it surpassed its limit of low-enriched uranium stockpile that was agreed upon in the 2015 nuclear deal.

Shunned Congolese refugee on raising a son born out of rape: the baby had a right to live

KAKUMA, Kenya – Under the wrath of the midday sunshine outside the strewn hut she now calls home, Nancy cradles her baby son and speaks with a kind of vehement passion tinged by deep pain.

The small boy Gulio, now one, was born out of rape. But rather than hiding in the shadows of the social stigma that has been forced upon her, 39-year-old Nancy – who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) capital Kinshasa – is refusing to be shamed into silence.

“We are in a hopeless situation, but there is no time to worry about how to cope, my child has a lot of needs,” Nancy told Fox News. “His needs are a lot.”

Nancy’s nightmare unraveled on March 15, 2017, when three masked assailants burst into her home. Weeks earlier, her sister had been brutally beaten and left for dead and gripped by fear, Nancy knew this time the attackers had come for her.

Her wailing three-year-old son Stephane and her oldest boy, then 14, were forced to watch helplessly as their mother was bashed black and blue. And then, she was brutally raped.

“And then I was blamed and banished by my own family and my former husband’s family,” Nancy recalled, her eyes glossed by tears. “I had no one. And for weeks all I could do was look for son.”

Nancy’s teen boy, profoundly traumatized by the onslaught and the attached cultural stigma leveled on rape victims, had run away immediately after his mom’s attack and was nowhere to be found. But with her own and young Stephane’s safety at-risk, and no one to turn to, she made the harrowing decision to flee.

The agonizing expedition lasted more than six weeks and entailed straddling boats, hitchhiking and long walks from the DRC through Tanzania to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi – before finally making it some 450 miles north-west to the sprawling Kakuma Refugee Camp. But around midway through the treachery, Nancy started throwing up in abnormal fits and starts.

With Stephane also sick and needing medication, she eventually found a clinic and while there took a pregnancy test.

“It came back positive, I was pregnant from the rape,” Nancy said. “I was devastated. I felt confused, embarrassed.”

Yet, she noted, there was no question of whether she would keep and raise the baby with as much love as other children.

“I believe in the right to life, the baby was inside me,” Nancy advocated. “My baby had a right to live.”

Guilo was born in December 2017.

Nonetheless, Nancy’s scarring personal plight is far from an isolated case.

Sexual violence in the DRC has become so pandemic over the last two decades that the United Nations has referred to it as the “rape capital of the world.”

Last year, Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize having devoted his life to physically mending the broken bodies of girls and women violated in the protracted unrest – having performed surgery in and provided holistic and psychological support for more than 40,000 survivors over the past twenty years.

NIGERIA’S CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY SLOWLY BEING ERASED AS MILITANTS STEP UP VICIOUS KILLINGS, KIDNAPPINGS

While it is impossible to obtain accurate statistics as so many such incidences go unreported, a 2011 study published in the American Journal of Public Health estimated that at least 48 women are raped every single hour in the DRC. Such a “weapon of war” has continued to reign with impunity, designed to decimate a woman’s identity and honor and tear through the framework of families and communities.

Along with the regrettable veil of humiliation cast over mothers, the children conceived from rape also face extreme challenges and social persecution, ostracized by communities and often viewed as enemies.

But Nancy, who once held a respected office job, remains determined to provide her young boys with as much love and guidance as possible, despite having nothing to her name, being unable to work given that she is raising two young children, and receiving little aid and moral support outside those with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

“Someday I hope I can set up a business here in the camp,” she said. “Maybe selling food and household items to other refugees.”

Yet in a small silver lining, Nancy – as a result of the ICRC in partnership with the local Kenyan Red Cross and their efforts to restore family links – was able to reconnect by phone with her oldest missing son in the DRC and learn he was safe.

“God will take care,” she whispered.

While Nancy knows she will likely never seek justice for what was done to her, and her family may never stop blaming and eschewing her for what endured, she remains committed to speaking out for those being victimized.

“Even here at the camp, if I see a kid being beaten by another kid I will try to have them talk it out,” she underscored.

Hong Kong demonstrators smash government building amid protests on anniversary of return of Chinese rule

A group of protestors smashed a window and tore down parts of an exterior wall at Hong Kong‘s legislature building Monday amid another round of massive demonstrations in the city on the 22nd anniversary of the return to Chinese rule.

The crowd, comprised of mostly young protesters, could be seen on video using a cargo cart and large poles as battering rams against the glass panel. The demonstrators then tore down part of a glass and metal exterior wall of the government building, carrying away the long strips of metal framework.

Officers were able to eventually commandeer the cart, using riot shields and deploying pepper spray to push back the hundreds of demonstrators gathered around the building.

A handful of protesters made it inside the building, where police awaited them, according to the South China Morning Post. It was not clear how many were inside, and what happened to them.

Hong Kong demonstrators are opposed to a government attempt to change extradition laws that would allow suspects to be sent to China to face trial. The proposed legislation, on which debate has been suspended indefinitely, increased fears of eroding freedoms in the territory, which Britain returned to China on July 1, 1997.

Protesters want the bills formally withdrawn and Hong Kong’s embattled leader, Carrie Lam, to resign.

“I am afraid the march today will be the last protest for Hong Kong,” demonstrator Harley Chuk Kit-ying told the SCMP. “If I still chose not to come, then I would regret for a lifetime.”

The clashes at the government building forced Hong Kong’s leader to watch the annual commemoration of the handover from inside the city’s cavernous convention center instead of outside, according to Sky News.

HONG KONG’S LEADER APOLOGIZES AFTER EXTRADITION BILL FUELS MASSIVE PROTESTS

In an address after a flag-raising ceremony marking the anniversary of the handover, Lam said the recent series of protests and two marches that attracted hundreds of thousands of participants have taught her she needs to listen better to youth and people in general.

“This has made me fully realize that I, as a politician, have to remind myself all the time of the need to grasp public sentiments accurately,” she told the gathering. Lam, who has come under withering criticism for trying to push the extradition legislation through, has pledged to be more responsive to public sentiment.

She insisted her government has good intentions, but said “I will learn the lesson and ensure that the government’s future work will be closer and more responsive to the aspirations, sentiments and opinions of the community.”

Security guards pushed pro-democracy lawmaker Helena Wong out of the room as she shouted at Lam to resign and withdraw the “evil” legislation. She later told reporters she was voicing the grievances and opinions of the protesters, who could not get into the event.

The mass march on Monday was the third demonstration in three weeks after the bill fueled fears that China is eroding Hong Kong’s freedoms.

Jimmy Sham, a leader of the pro-democracy group that organized the march, told the crowd that Lam had not responded to their demands because she is not democratically elected. The leader of Hong Kong is chosen by a committee dominated by pro-China elites.

“We know that Carrie Lam can be so arrogant,” Sham said, rallying the crowd under a blazing sun before the start of the march at Victoria Park. “She is protected by our flawed system.”

Besides the controversial legislature, protestors are also demanding an independent inquiry into police actions during a June 12 protest, when officers used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse a demonstration that blocked the legislature on the day that debate on the bill had been scheduled to resume.

Police have claimed the use of force was justified, but since then have largely adopted softer tactics, even as protesters besieged police headquarters in recent days, pelting it with eggs and spray-painting slogans on its outer walls.

South Korea’s military say it has detected an “unidentified object” flying near the border with North Korea.

The South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff says its radar found “the traces of flight by an unidentified object” on Monday over the central portion of the Demilitarized Zone that bisects the two Koreas. It gave no further details.

The DMZ is the world’s most heavily fortified border. The two Koreas have occasionally traded exchanges of gunfire before North Korea entered talks on its nuclear program.

The development came a day after President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong met at the DMZ and agreed to resume working-level talks on the North’s nuclear program.

Police hunt for 9-foot python that could heat a human loose in British city

A 9-foot reticulated python is reportedly slithering through a British city, sparking a massive police search for the reptile.

The snake, which is said to have the ability to eat a human, was first spotted near Lovell Road in Cambridge on Sunday. Cambridgeshire Police said they have tracked down the python’s owner, but have yet to locate the reptile.

WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES: ENORMOUS PYTHON SWALLOWS EVEN BIGGER PYTHON, BUT CAN’T HANDLE IT

The department tweeted Sunday: “In the early hours of this morning, Officers attended the area of Lovell Rd Cambridge. Reports of a three meter snake seen in the area.”

“Police have located the owner but not the Reticulated Python confirmed to be 9ft long. Any sighting please notify Cambs Police on 101,” Cambridgeshire Police wrote.

Reticulated pythons are known as the world’s longest snake, growing up to 31.5 feet long, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. The species is native to Southeast Asia and is non-venomous. A python is a constrictor and kills its prey by coiling around it and squeezing.

While attacks on humans are rare, there have been reports of pythons eating humans in Indonesia in recent years.

After days of speculation — and optimistic statements by the two leaders — President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will meet Sunday at the Demilitarized Zone.

The confirmation came from South Korean President Moon Jae-in at a joint news conference with President Trump following their brief meeting in Seoul.

“President Trump is the maker of peace in the Korean Peninsula,” Moon said in announcing the plan.

Prior to the press conference, both Trump and Kim had expressed hopes that the meeting would be possible. But Trump said earlier Sunday that logistical and security issues still needed to be addressed.

Trump meets top K-pop band during South Korea trip, Ivanka receives signed album copy

President Trump was greeted in South Korea by its president – and one of the country’s most popular K-pop bands.

Trump landed in South Korea Saturday following the G-20 summit in Osaka, Japan and said he will visit the heavily-fortified demilitarized zone that separates North and South Korea.

But before that, Trump was treated with some K-pop diplomacy. After meeting with President Moon Jae-in at the Blue House, he was greeted by EXO, a pop group whose members gave the president a book.

The group also gave a signed copy of their album to White House adviser Ivanka Trump and chatted with the president’s son in law Jared Kushner.

This wasn’t the first time Trump’s daughter met the group. Harry Harris, U.S. ambassador to South Korea, shared a group picture from Saturday, adding that the first time she met the group was during the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

Trump floated the possibility of meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his visit to the DMZ, a trip he unexpectedly announced on Friday.

“After some very important meetings, including my meeting with President Xi of China, I will be leaving Japan for South Korea (with President Moon). While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!” he wrote in a tweet.

During a press conference in Japan earlier today, Trump said that he would be “very comfortable” to cross into North Korea after the meeting with Kim, a move which would make him the first U.S. president to cross the border while he’s at the DMZ.

He said his offer to meet Kim was a “feeler” and was a spontaneous plan who recently came up with.

“I just put out a feeler, because I don’t know where he is right now, he may not be in North Korea,” Trump told reporters.

“We may be meeting with Chairman Kim. We get along. There’ve been no nuclear tests, no long-range nuclear tests and they returned our hostages,” he added.
