US officials suspect Iran may have seized missing UAE-based oil tanker

A small oil tanker that stopped transmitting its location more than two days ago while traveling through a vital waterway near the Persian Gulf didn’t emit a distress call, causing U.S. officials to suspect Iran may have seized the vessel, American defense officials said Tuesday.

The MT Riah, a Panamanian-flagged vessel based in the United Arab Emirates, was traveling Saturday night through the Strait of Hormuz when its tracking system went dark. The disappearance could add to already-heightened tensions between Iran and Western nations in the region.

“Could it have broken down or been towed for assistance? That’s a possibility,” an unidentified U.S. official told The Associated Press. “But the longer there is a period of no contact. It’s going to be a concern.”

If Iran did seize the ship, it’s apt to be the latest in a series of provocations involving oil tankers in the region. Iran has threatened to stop tankers in the strait if it is not allowed to sell its own oil abroad.

Around 20 percent of all crude oil passes through the strait.

The 190-foot tanker stopped transmitting its location around 11 p.m. as tracking data showed its last position pointing toward Iran.

“That is a red flag,” said Capt. Ranjith Raja of the data firm Refinitiv. He said the tanker had not switched off its tracker in three months of trips around the U.A.E.

The Islamic Republic has not commented on the ship’s disappearance.

An Emirati official speaking on condition of anonymity told AP that “we are monitoring the situation with our international partners.”

Several oil tankers traveling through the Persian Gulf have been targeted in recent months as Iran continues to mount a campaign aimed at obtaining relief from U.S. sanctions over its nuclear program.

It recently surpassed its uranium enrichment levels limited by its 2015 nuclear deal, from which President Trump withdrew over a year ago.

TRUMP VOWS TO ‘SUBSTANTIALLY’ INCREASE SANCTIONS ON IRAN IN RESPONSE TO URANIUM ENRICHMENT

Without commenting on the U.A.E.-based oil tanker, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Tuesday that the country will retaliate over the seizure of its supertanker carrying over 2.1 million barrels of light crude oil.

“God willing, the Islamic Republic and its committed forces will not leave this evil without a response,” he said.

British Royal Marines seized the vessel earlier this month off Gibraltar on suspicion of trying to provide oil to Syrian leader Bashar Assad, a violation of European Union sanctions. On Saturday, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said Britain will release the ship if assurances are given that it will not violate the sanctions.

Mysterious attacks on oil tankers in recent months have been blamed n Iran, as well as the downing of a U.S. drone. In response to the escalation, the U.S. has sent thousands of troops, fighter jets and nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to the Middle East.

Apartment building collapses in Mumbai, at least 3 dead and dozens feared trapped

Dozens of people are feared trapped under the rubble of a four-story residential building that collapsed Tuesday, killing at least three people in Mumbai, India.

First responders, using sniffer dogs, are frantically searching the remains of the building in Dongri, a crowded residential section of Mumbai, for any survivors, while video showed people forming a human chain to remove the rubble using their hands.

“The building crashed with a heavy sound and we through there was an earthquake,” a local resident told the New Delhi Television news channel.

Fire official Ashok Talpade told reporters that at least eight people, including a child, have been rescued and rushed to the hospital. The child was allowed to go home after being treated, he said.

The National Disaster Response Force said in a statement that rescuers found three bodies.

The building was located in a narrow lane in a congested area of India’s financial and entertainment capital. This made it difficult to send earth-moving machines to help remove the rubble.

Greek man detained in US scientist’s murder in Nazi bunker on Crete

Police on the Greek island of Crete reportedly detained a man Monday in connection with the killing of an American scientist found dead this month in an abandoned bunker used by the Nazis during World War II.

The 27-year-old man held Monday was one of 10 people interviewed during the weekend as part of the investigation into Suzanne Eaton’s slaying, officials said.

Eaton, a 59-year-old molecular biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Dresden, Germany was last seen July 2 near the port of the Crete city of Chania.

Police found her body last week in a man-made cave that had been used as a bunker during the Nazi occupation of Crete. The cave is located about six miles from where Eaton was last seen. She had been suffocated and the coroner ruled her death a “criminal act.”

Georgia man confirmed dead in Dominican Republic only the latest case in string of American fatalities there

The State Department on Sunday confirmed another American fatality in the Dominican Republic, a tourist who died of “respiratory illness” in March — and who is the 11th American to die in the Caribbean country this year.

Tracy Jerome Jester, Jr., a 31-year-old from Georgia, died after a day of sightseeing with his sister, his family said. It was not immediately clear what resort the Forsyth native stayed at during his trip.

“We can confirm the death of a U.S. citizen in the Dominican Republic in March 2019,” a state department spokesperson told ABC News in a statement Sunday. “We offer our sincerest condolences to the family for their loss. Out of respect for the family during this difficult time, we do not have additional information to provide.”

Jester’s relatives say they still have unanswered questions about the 31-year-old’s death.

“They had a good day. Saturday, they went out, they explored. They said they had a good day,” Jester’s mother, Melody Moore, told WSB-TV.

Moore said she talked to her son after the day trip and he seemed alright, but around 3:30 a.m. the next day, Jester’s sister called Moore “and she told me he was calling her saying he couldn’t breathe, just saying, ‘Mama I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.”

Jester’s sister called emergency services but it was too late, Moore said. Jester reportedly suffered from Lupus, but it was unclear if that had any connection to his death.

“Being a mom, I want to go to where he was, where he died at last. Something is wrong, my son is gone. Something is really wrong,” Moore said.  “As a mother, you’re not there when your son takes his last breath. That hurts and I mean, you’ve got so many questions.”

Jester is the 11th American to die after traveling to the Dominican Republic in 2019 and is the 14th such person reported to have died there since June 2018.

CANADIAN WOMAN WHO SAYS SHE FELL CRITICALLY ILL ON DOMINICAN REPUBLIC VACATION SAYS DOCTOR FLAGGED POSSIBLE POISONING

In June, Francisco Javier Garcia, the country’s tourism minister, castigated journalists for allegedly overblowing the string of deaths, and said the U.S. State Department’s figures show there hasn’t been an increase in American tourist deaths for reasons other than natural causes.

“The Dominican Republic has seen an exaggerated number of Americans in the Dominican Republic who have died,” Garcia said. “And media have taken it as an avalanche of deaths.”

But several relatives of deceased Americans have raised doubts about the accounts Dominican authorities have given them of their relatives’ deaths, and many have also expressed exasperation with the U.S. State Department, which they say has played too passive a role in investigating.

The FBI has said they were testing alcohol from at least one mini-bar in at least one of the rooms at the Bahia Principe resort, where a number of guests died.

Skydiving plane crash in Sweden leaves 9 dead, officials say

Nine people were killed Sunday when a small plane carrying a group of skydivers crashed shortly after takeoff in Sweden, officials said.

The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. on Storsandskar island not long after the plane took off from Umea Airport, located in the northern part of the country.

Swedish airport authority Swedavia said the plane involved in the crash was a GippsAero GA8 Airvan, an Australian-made single-engine aircraft popular with parachutists.

4 kids pack SUV with fishing rods, drive 600 miles before being picked off by police: report

CANBERRA, Australia– Four children aged 10 to 14 packed fishing rods in a parent’s SUV, left a farewell note then drove more than 600 miles down the Australian east coast before they were stopped by police the next day, an officer said on Monday.

When the children were stopped by police near Grafton in New South Wales state at 10:40 p.m. Sunday, they locked the doors and refused to get out, Acting Police Inspector Darren Williams said.

A police officer used a baton to break a window of the Nissan Patrol, that had been reported stolen, Williams said.

Police were not sure which child or children drove or why they left Rockhampton in Queensland state on Saturday. The children are a 14-year-old boy, two 13-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl.

Williams said they possibly shared the driving.

“It’s a long way, in excess of 600 miles from Rockhampton down to Grafton. I couldn’t imagine one person actually driving all that way in two days,” Williams told reporters.

The children are suspected of failing to pay for gasoline at gas stations in two towns, Williams said.

They were also chased by police in the New South Wales town of Glen Innes, where a 13-year-old was suspected to be driving, Williams said.

“There was a short pursuit up there with the Highway Patrol and due to the age of the driver and the road conditions, that was terminated by the Highway Patrol officers … and the general duties police that were involved,” he said.

The 14-year-old lived in Grafton, which might have been the children’s destination, Williams said.

Police have yet to interview the children because they cannot be questioned without a parent or guardian being present. Williams said they will be charged, but did not list the alleged offenses.

Williams did not know if the children were related or how they knew each other.

He did not know what the children had written in the note that was left in Rockhampton.

SEE IT: Russia launches major new telescope into space after delays

A Russian Proton-M rocket successfully delivered a cutting-edge space telescope into orbit Saturday after days of launch delays, Russia’s space agency said.

Roscosmos said the telescope, named Spektr-RG, was delivered into a parking orbit before a final burn Saturday that kicked the spacecraft out of Earth’s orbit and on to its final destination: the L2 Lagrange point.

Lagrange points are unique positions in the solar system where objects can maintain their position relative to the sun and the planets that orbit it. Located 0.93 million miles from Earth, L2 is particularly ideal for telescopes such as Spektr-RG.

If all goes well, the telescope will arrive at its designated position in three months, becoming the first Russian spacecraft to operate beyond Earth’s orbit since the Soviet era. The telescope aims to conduct a complete x-ray survey of the sky by 2025, the first space telescope to do so.

The Russian accomplishment comes as the U.S. space agency NASA celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969.

Russian space science missions have suffered greatly since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. Budget cuts have forced the Russian space program to shift toward more commercial efforts.

Bastille Day in France showcases European military cooperation

The annual Bastille Day celebration in Paris this year was not just about showcasing France, but also military cooperation among European continues.

The flags of 10 countries of the European Intervention Initiative, a joint military pact created last year, led Sunday’s military parade down the Champs Elysees avenue in Paris.

In a message to the French people before the parade, President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the importance of France’s commitment to boost European security.

A Latvian-Czech chess phenom whose legitimacy has long been questioned was allegedly caught cheating inside a bathroom during a tournament in France this week.

Grandmaster Igors Rausis, 58, was suspended from the Strasbourg Open after a photo emerged showing him sitting on a toilet looking at a phone during a break in play, the Daily Telegraph reported.

“Igor Rausis caught red-handed at a tournament in Strasbourg,” World Chess Federation director Emil Sutovsky posted to Facebook.

Phones are typically banned from chess tournaments because players can use certain apps to analyze their moves in previous games, gaining an unfair advantage. Rausis was suspended after officials found the device in the bathroom and he signed a declaration stating it was his.

“I simply lost my mind yesterday,” Rausis told Chess.com. “I confirmed the fact of using my phone during the game by written [statement]. What could I say more? Yes, I was tired after the morning game and all the Facebook activity of accusers also have a known impact. At least what I committed yesterday is a good lesson, not for me — I played my last game of chess already.”

Rausis has long been suspected of cheating in competition play. He stunned the chess world by racking up victories and progressing from regular grandmaster to “super” grandmaster in a six-year span.

“It’s amazing Rausis wasn’t stopped earlier,” grandmaster Danny Gormally told Deadspin. “Seems naive that people think someone can improve that much in their fifties.”

In a Facebook post that doesn’t mention Rausis by name, Yuri Garrett, the secretary for the Chess Federation’s Fair Play Commission, said a player had been closely followed for months after unusual “excellent statistical insights” had given them away.

The evidence against Rausis was sent to an ethics committee and the French police will be involved.

Detained Iranian tanker will be released if oil isn’t bound for Syria, UK foreign secretary says

An Iranian oil tanker held by British forces near Gibraltar will be released if the United Kingdom is assured the oil will not be heading to Syria, London’s top diplomat said Saturday.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Twitter that he had a “constructive call” with his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif, during which Hunt “reassured him [Zarif] our concern was destination not origin of the oil.”

Hunt added that the “U.K. would facilitate release if we received guarantees that it would not be going to Syria, following due process in Gib [Gibraltar] courts.”

The Iranian tanker Grace 1 was captured earlier this month on suspicion of breaking European Union sanctions, according to the BBC. The head of Gibraltar’s government said Friday the tanker was carrying 2.1 million barrels of light crude oil.

Fabian Picardo told the country’s parliament that the ship is suspected of breaching European Union sanctions on Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government and that any nation with a claim to the vessel and its cargo can file a claim in court.

In addition to the tanker’s captain and chief officer arrested Thursday, Gibraltar police said they arrested the two second mates of the Panama-flagged tanker on Friday. The two are in custody and are assisting police with their inquiries, authorities said. All four are Indian citizens.

Tensions between London and Tehran escalated Thursday after the British navy said it had three Iranian paramilitary vessels from disrupting the passage of a British oil tanker through the vital Strait of Hormuz.

BRITIAN WILL BE ‘SLAPPED IN THE FACE’ FOR SEIZURE OF IRANIAN TANKER, CLERIC SAYS.

The captain of HMS Montrose, a British frigate following the BP-owned tanker, was forced to move between the Iranian boats and the commercial vessel, a Ministry of Defense spokesman said. On Friday, the ministry said it was moving up its timetable to relieve the Montrose with the larger HMS Duncan destroyer in the wake of the recent developments.

“This will ensure that the UK alongside international partners can continue to support freedom of navigation for vessels transiting through this vital shipping lane,” the ministry said.

At the same time, Hunt called for “cool heads” to prevail to ensure there is no “unintended escalation.”

“We are being clear to Iran that we are not seeking to escalate this situation,” he said, adding that the British response had been “measured and careful.”
