Iran’s ‘final answer’ following general’s death is to ‘kick all US forces out of the region,’ Rouhani warns

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani warned Wednesday that the Islamic Republic’s “final answer” to the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani “will be to kick all U.S. forces out of the region”.

The fiery rhetoric comes hours after Iran launched missiles at two bases housing American and coalition troops in Iraq.

“General Soleimani fought heroically against ISIS, Al Nusra, Al Qaeda… if it weren’t for his war on terror, European capitals would be in great danger now,” Rouhani said.

“Our final answer to his assassination will be to kick all U.S. forces out of the region,” he added.

IRAN BURIES SOLEIMANI AFTER NEW ATTACKS ON US, COALITION FORCES IN IRAQ

The tone in Rouhani’s remarks was a shift from comments Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif made Tuesday evening, in which he said his country “took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense” for the killing of Soleimani, striking the bases where the missiles targeting him were launched.

“We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression,” Zarif had tweeted.

President Trump is set to speak out about the Iranian missile strikes in an address scheduled for 11 a.m. ET this morning. No U.S. or other NATO forces were injured in the attacks, officials told Fox News.

The office of Iraq’s president condemned the strikes Wednesday as a breach of the country’s sovereignty.

Barham Saleh’s office said in a statement that the fate of U.S. troops in Iraq is an internal matter based on legal agreements to combat the Islamic State terrorist group.

UKRAINIAN PLANE CARRYING 176 CRASHES OUTSIDE TEHRAN, KILLING ALL ON BOARD

The statement adds that Iraq “has previously declared its refusal to be a starting point for aggression against any country, and also refuses to be a source of threat to any of its neighbors.”

The Iraqi prime minister has publicly said U.S. troops must leave after a drone strike killed Soleimani — Iran’s top military commander — in Baghdad last Friday, and parliament has passed a non-binding resolution pushing for withdrawal.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also condemned the strikes Wednesday, tweeting that the bloc is calling on Iran to “refrain from further violence.”

Four U.S. defense officials told Fox News that the military did not attempt to shoot down the ballistic missiles fired from Iran into Iraq because there were no American military assets in place to intercept them.

The Patriot and Avenger anti-missile defense systems are deployed to other locations in the Middle East, but not to the two Iraqi bases – al-Asad and Erbil – targeted by Iran. Officials say the American assets are in high demand and short supply around the world.

“For the past few years, our focus was defeating ISIS and keeping a light footprint in Iraq. We did not need air defense systems against ISIS,” as one official explained for why there was no U.S. missile defense systems in place at the Iraqi bases.

Iran is refusing to hand over the black box of the doomed Ukrainian airliner to Boeing amid an investigation into what caused the crash that killed all 176 people aboard the flight out of Tehran early Wednesday, according to a report.

UKRAINIAN PLANE CARRYING 176 PASSENGERS CRASHES OUTSIDE TEHRAN AIRPORT KILLING ALL ON BOARD, UKRAINE SAYS

Ali Abedzadeh, the head of Tehran’s civil aviation organization, told Mehr news agency in Tehran that Iran has not made a decision on which country or international authority it would send the black box to for its data to be analyzed, Reuters reported.

The Boeing Company is an American aerospace company headquartered out of Chicago. It is the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial jet transports. Boeing also designs, manufactures and sells military aircraft, helicopters, space vehicles, missiles and communication equipment worldwide.

The crash of the Ukraine International Airlines flight came hours after Iran fired as many as 15 ballistic missiles on Iraqi bases housing U.S. soldiers in a major retaliation by the rogue regime after the U.S. airstrike that killed Iranian Quds Force Gen. Qassem Soleimani last week.

No Americans were aboard the flight. Three Britons, three Germans, 63 Canadians, 10 Swedes, 11 Ukrainians, 82 Iranians and four Afghans died in the crash, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry Vadym Prystaiko said.

The timing of the crash fueled speculation on social media that the earlier missile strike played a role in the crash shortly after takeoff from the Imam Khomeini International Airport, but authorities have pointed to a mechanical issue.

The tweet was an obvious response to President Trump who posted an American flag last week after he ordered an airstrike that killed top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr bashes Trump as ‘son of gambling halls’

An influential anti-U.S. Iraqi cleric who led a militia that battled American forces during the Iraq War lashed out at President Trump over social media with a series of insults that criticized his former casino empire and his medical deferments during the Vietnam War.

Muqtada al-Sadr, a Shia cleric, issued his remarks via a lengthy Twitter post on Monday,” the Military Times reported.

Al-Sadr has criticized U.S. involvement in the region and was a key leader behind some of the most fierce battles against U.S. troops during the Iraq War.

IRAQ’S OUTGOING PRIME MINISTER SAYD US TROOPS MUST LEAVE TO AVOID CRISIS

In his Twitter post, he made fun of Trump, saying his “voice and tweets are more strident than sound of donkey.”

“Your home is less stable than spider web. Your weapon is weaker than mosquito bites,” he wrote, before asking if Trump “forgot Vietnam, or are you anxious for a new swamp?”

The cleric also called the president the “the son of gambling halls.” Al-Sadr then urged his followers to come together and defend Iran if the U.S. invades the country.

“Your intentions have become clear today. He who wanted to liberate us yesterday, today wants us on our knees,” he wrote. “If you want my advice, don’t be like your predecessor [former President George W. Bush] or else you shall regret it.”

Al-Sadr has criticized the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ elite Quds Force, in a drone strike in Iraq last week.

Trump and Iranian officials have traded insults and threats in recent days with Iran vowing revenge and Trump promising to use military force should the Islamic Republic target American sites.

A woman who criticized the United States on social media for the killing of a top Iranian general was arrested Tuesday in Kosovo.

Ikballe Berisha Huduti will remain in detention for 48 hours pending a court decision for incitement to commit a terrorist offense, Reuters reported.

Prosecutors said Huduti, the founder of a now-defunct pro-Islamic group, posted comments on Facebook that were critical of the Jan. 3 killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ elite Quds Force, in a drone strike in Iraq last week.

MEGHAN MCCAIN CONFRONTS WARREN ON SOLEIMANI: WHY IS IT SO HARD TO CALL HIM A TERRORIST?

“By killing the master of the house you have killed all members of the family, then revenge is obligatory but it has no border,” Huduti wrote. In one post, Huduti described Solemani as a “great man,” Radio Free Europe reported.

She said she deleted the posts and that her words were taken out of context. Huduti said she previously praised American democracy and U.S. support for Kosovo in 1999, during the conflict between ethnic Serbs and Albanians in the former Yugoslavia.

U.S. officials said Soleimani was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American troops and was planning attacks just before his death. Many leaders in Kosovo have expressed support for the U.S. airstrike.

“I strongly support #US reaction against Iran’s activities in the Middle East that have caused terror, instability and global concern,” Kosovo’s president, Hashim Thaci, tweeted last week. “We stand together in protecting our values and our way of life and in search of peace and security.”

India court orders execution of convicts in 2012 deadly rape

A New Delhi court issued a death warrant Tuesday for four men convicted in the 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman on a bus that brought global attention to the country’s sexual violence epidemic.

The court scheduled the hangings for Jan. 22, local news outlets reported. The warrant has been anticipated since India’s Supreme Court rejected one of the men’s final review pleas last month.

The female rape victim — a 23-year-old physiotherapy student whom Indian media dubbed “Nirbhaya,” or “Fearless,” because Indian law prohibits victims from being identified — was heading home with a male friend from a movie theater when six men lured them onto a bus.

With no one else in sight, they beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her. The pair were dumped naked on the side of the road, and the woman died two weeks later.

The assailants were tried relatively quickly in a country where sexual assault cases often languish for years. Four defendants were sentenced to death. Another hanged himself in prison before his trial began, though his family insists he was killed. The sixth assailant was a minor at the time of the December 2012 attack and was sentenced to three years in a reform home.

Swati Maliwal, the chair of the Delhi Commission for Women, applauded the court’s announcement on Tuesday.

“I salute her mother who has fought for so long,” she tweeted. “It is a victory for all the fearless people of this country. This is the time to punish every rapist in the country so that a strong message is sent out.”

VIOLENT CLASHES IN INDIA FOLLOWING VICIOUS WEEKEND ATTACK ON STUDENTS AND WOMEN

The scheduled executions come amid a revived debate over sexual violence in India after several cases have made headlines in recent months. In December, a woman in Uttar Pradesh was doused with gasoline and set on fire by five men — including two who were out on bail after she had accused them of gang rape — on her way to attend a court hearing in her case. Shortly after, she died at a hospital in New Delhi.

Australia wildfires bring over 100 firefighters from US, including elite crew from California

Firefighters battling out-of-control wildfires that have killed at least 25 people, hundreds of thousands of animals and scorched millions of acres across Australia are getting well-needed reinforcements from the U.S., including a team of veteran fire crews from California.

The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, which is mobilizing U.S. resources in response to Australia’s requests for international firefighting aid, said the new batch of 20 veteran firefighters based in the Angeles National Forest north of Los Angeles departed on Monday for the region.

“As the extreme fire danger continues across Australia, the Department of the Interior will continue to do all that we can to support requests for assistance,” Craig Leff, director of the Department of the Interior’s Office of Wildland Fire, said in a statement. “Our focus remains on helping the people of Australia and keeping people safe in these unprecedented conditions.”

AUSTRALIAN OFFICIALS CHARGED NEARLY 200 WITH FIRE OFFENSES AS DEADLY WILDFIRES RAGE

Federal agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management already have provided a few dozen people, most of them with experience managing fires, a forest service spokesperson said Saturday.

The crew that left on Monday who left on Monday from Los Angeles International Airport will replace a group of personnel sent to Australia in early December. They include hot-shot and helicopter crew members with experience attacking fires early before they grow into large infernos, according to Angeles National Forest Fire Chief Robert Garcia.

The firefighters, 18 men and two women, said they were anticipating “strong fire behavior” and were preparing on what to expect based on their own experience battling wildfires in Southern California.

“We’re in an area where we are getting fires all the time, we’re kinda known for it, for getting fires, so I think we can translate that over [and] just see what the lay of the land would be out there,” Forest Service Firefighter Jorge Perez told FOX11.

The Pacific Northwest Region of the Forest Service said that over 100 fire personnel from the U.S. have been working with counterparts in Australia as they struggle to combat the devasting blazes.

“We send well-wishes of rain, lower temperatures & decreased winds,” the agency recently tweeted. “Thank you for your efforts!”

Australia and New Zealand have been sending firefighters to the United States for more than 15 years, most recently in August 2018, when 138 came to help battle fires in Northern California and the Northwest. The last time U.S. firefighters worked in Australia was 2010.

“Our thoughts and prayers, with our deepest condolences, are with the Australia firefighters and public who have lost their lives and homes,” U.S. Forest Service Fire Director Shawna Legarza said in a statement. “We are proud to provide personnel from the United States and will continue to support Australia with the resources needed during this unprecedented fire situation.”

AUSTRALIA WILDFIRES MAY MERGE INTO ‘MEGA BLAZE’ AS DEATH TOLL CLIMBS, GOVERNMENT VOWS ‘WHATEVER IT TAKES’

The fires, fueled by drought and the country’s hottest and driest year on record, have been raging since September, months earlier than is typical for Australia’s annual wildfire season. So far, the blazes have killed 25 people, destroyed 2,000 homes and scorched an area twice the size of the state of Maryland.

In the New South Wales state, 130 fires were still burning on Tuesday, around 50 of which were uncontrolled. Among those killed in the blazes are volunteer firefighter Andrew O’Dwyer, who perished on Dec. 19 after a tree fell into the path of the fire engine he was traveling in with colleague Geoffrey Keaton, 32, who was also killed.

During his funeral in Sydney on Tuesday, his young daughter Charlotte was presented with a service medal and was pictured wearing her father’s hat.

Nineteen-month-old Charlotte received the medal from rural fire service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons, who wept as he read out a tribute to her 36-year-old father during the service, according to Sky News.

“Charlotte should know her father was a selfless and special man, who only left because he was a hero,” Fitzsimmons said.

On Tuesday, cooler and rainier weather was providing thousands of weary firefighters a “psychological and emotional” reprieve as they scrambled to strengthen containment lines around the blazes before temperatures rise again, according to Fitzsimmons.

“It really is about shoring up protection to limit the damage potential and the outbreak of these fires over the coming days,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The rain was also complicating firefighters’ attempts to strategically backburn certain areas and was making the ground slippery for fire trucks.

Victoria state Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said on Monday at least 8 inches of rain would need to fall in a short time to snuff out the fires — around 20 times what has fallen across the region in the past day. And officials warned that Australia’s wildfire season, which generally lasts through March, is nowhere near its end.

Venezuela’s Guaido forces his way into congress amid standoff

Opposition leader Juan Guaidó and opposition lawmakers pushed their way into Venezuela’s legislative building Tuesday following a standoff with security forces as the nation’s political divide deepens.

The man recognized by the U.S. and over 50 other nations as Venezuela’s rightful president made his way toward his seat in the National Assembly and led lawmakers in boisterously singing the country’s anthem.

Shortly thereafter, electricity in the building went out, but lawmakers continued in the dimly lit assembly, shouting into microphones that did not work to declare Guaidó the legitimate president of the congress.
