Spanish police seize 6,000 pounds of cocaine during first-ever ‘narco-submarine’ capture, reports say

Spanish police have seized more than 6,000 pounds of cocaine from what is believed to be the first-ever “narco-submarine” caught trying to enter European waters, reports say.

The 65-foot vessel, which in itself is estimated to cost $3 million to build, was tracked down Sunday off the coast of Pontevedra, according to El Pais. Investigators are now hoping to crane-lift the sub onto the dock at the Port of Aldán so that they can get inside more easily, an official from the government’s office in the province said Tuesday.

Spanish authorities said it was the first time a submarine had been found to be used in drug trafficking in the country – and that they had been monitoring the vessel´s movements in recent days in coordination with international police.

The submarine is believed to have departed from Colombia, according to El Pais. Following its capture, two Ecuadoreans on board were taken into custody, but a third person that escaped remains on the lam, the newspaper added.

The submarine sank as police tried to intercept it Sunday, yet it wasn’t clear if the crew sank it on purpose.

Sources that spoke to El Pais said the vessel was carrying around 6,600 pounds of cocaine and the criminal organizations affiliated with it must be “big, since just the submarine itself must have cost around €2.5 million ($2.75 million).” The sources also said they believe the submarine was built in the South American country of Guyana and has been in operation “for years.”

The Spanish region of Galicia, where the ship was intercepted, is reported to have a long history with drug smuggling as its winding coastline provides plenty of areas for traffickers to discreetly move in and out of.

In 2006, investigators found an abandoned homemade submarine there, The Telegraph reported.

Massive Colombia anti-government protests continue amid heightened violent crackdown

The massive anti-government protests that have erupted in several Latin American countries have boiled over into Colombia as thousands have taken to the streets in recent days, sparking fear and violence throughout the country.

The protests, which began November 21 in central Bogota, have been mostly nonviolence and peaceful, but the government of President Ivan Duque Marquez has taken an aggressive stance against the movement.

Security forces have used tear gas and other repressive methods to end the protests, which have disrupted and somewhat paralyzed the city for nearly a week.

COLOMBIA IMPSOSES RARE CURFEW IN BOGOTA AFTER VIOLENT ANTI-GOVERNMENT PROTESTS

At least one person – 18-year-old high school student Dilan Cruz – has died. However, some reports have put the death toll at three.

David Torres, a 30-year-old master’s student studying chemistry in Bogota, told Fox News that there have been “many abuses from authorities” against demonstrators. He participated in one of the first rallies.

“The atmosphere is hopeful because people saw the results in Chile, and also they can see the abuses of police and the fear that authorities spread, especially on Friday,” Torres said via Twitter message. “But there is some uncertainty because the government does not decide to speak with the citizens and also keeps such an aggressive position.”

The mood among protesters is “hopeful,” but they are also worried, Torres said, adding that people will continue to strike, despite the continued government crackdown.

An estimated 250,000 anti-government demonstrators, including students, teachers and working-class union members, rattled Colombia when they took to the streets last week and voiced strong opposition to Duque’s conservative policies. It’s the largest protest Colombia has seen in years.

Unlike the protests in countries across Latin America, which are driven by the steep drop in commodity prices, there is no one single issue that is motivating Colombians to mobilize against the incumbent government.

Sergio Guzman, director of Colombia Risk Analysis, said the unfocused nature of the protest movement will make it difficult for it to negotiate with the government.

“The protesters are a hodgepodge of people with so many different agendas that it will be difficult to find a common narrative,” Guzman told Fox News.

However, there is a shared sense of indignation in Colombia – and across the region – over the failure of the government to address the corruption and rising inequality that leave people struggling to survive while affluent and well-connected elites enrich themselves — at the expense of everyone else.

“The sentiment in the street is, overall, a lot of frustration with the government and the current situation, Guzman said. “Colombia’s growth is a radical departure from the rest of the region, the second-highest in the region – but there are vast inequalities that don’t allow ordinary people to participate in that prosperity.”

The government’s proposal to slash the minimum wage, salaries, and pension funds would likely exasperate these inequalities and was also a driving force behind the uprising.

“Broadly speaking, the protestors want Duque’s government to engage more with opposition groups, not introduce any proposals to cut pensions or try to implement labor reform, increase funding for economic development in rural areas, and not make any cuts or reform to public education,” Jeffrey Hawn, Global Security Analyst at Stratfor, told Fox News.

One of the somewhat less talked about issues that is unique to Colombia is the 2016 peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group.

Colombia and the FARC were engaged in a 50-year civil war, the longest civil conflict in Latin America, which left 220,000 dead, 25,000 disappeared, and 5.7 million displaced since the insurgency began in the 1960s.

The government and the rebels finally came to a peace agreement to end the conflict in 2016 and have remained a focal point of Colombian public policy since the peace deal was signed. A major component of the peace agreement, and integral to war termination and conflict resolution in general, called for rebels to demobilize and surrender their arms to a U.N. commission. The demobilization process included in the peace agreement allowed for political representation from former rebels.

Now, three years later, key components of the deal have not been implemented and some of the rebels appear to be abandoning the reintegration process and rearming for renewed conflict.

Although the peace agreement is not central to protester demands, people feel that Duque has mismanaged security overall and has allowed some militants to reassert control and violence in rural areas.

As violence is flaring once again in rural parts of the region and ungoverned spaces where the FARC once thrived, people are concerned that the government will not be able to fully implement the peace agreement.

Duque has claimed the people have the right to protest and voice their concerns over government policy, but some in his government are employing rhetorical strategies by other right-wing regimes in Latin America, asserting that the grassroots uprising is a left-wing plot to overthrow the government.

Some rogue elements have taken advantage of the instability and committed acts of vandalism and looting, potentially damaging the credibility of the otherwise peaceful and legitimate grievances held by the protesters.

Lewis the koala, who was captured on video being pulled from charred NSW bushland by a heroic grandmother after a bushfire, has died.

The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital shared the heartbreaking news this afternoon, saying staff had made the decision earlier today to put him to sleep.

“We placed him under general anesthesia this morning to assess his burns injuries and change the bandages,” the hospital said in a post at about 2.30 p.m.

It stated Lewis’s burns got worse “and unfortunately would not have gotten better.”

UK chief rabbi slams Labour Party over anti-Semitism claims: ‘The very soul of our nation is at stake’

Britain’s most senior Jewish religious leader stepped into the middle of the country’s general election campaign Monday, warning that the “the very soul of our nation is at stake” and claiming that opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of anti-Semitism allegations makes him “unfit for high office.”

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, the spiritual leader of the United Kingdom’s Orthodox Jews, said Corbyn had allowed the “poison” of anti-Semitism to take root in his party.

Mirvis, writing in The Times of London, said Corbyn and his allies had failed to stop anti-Jewish prejudice within the party and “hounded” those who tried to challenge it.

Mirvis’ op-ed represents a near-unprecedented intervention in the U.K.’s politics, which he described as “amongst the most painful moments” of his career.

UK POLICE CONFIRM 39 PEOPLE FOUND DEAD IN TRUCK WERE FROM VIETNAM, 3 MORE SUSPECTS ARRESTED

Corbyn has called anti-Semitism “a poison and an evil in our society” and said he is working to root it out of the party. Mirvis said that Corbyn’s claim to have dealt with all allegations of anti-Semitism is not true, adding that “the way in which the leadership has dealt with anti-Jewish racism is incompatible with the British values of which we are so proud.”

“Elections should be a celebration of democracy. However, just weeks before we go to the polls, the overwhelming majority of British Jews are gripped by anxiety,” Mirvis wrote. “… It is not my place to tell any person how they should vote. … I simply pose the question: What will the result of this election say about the moral compass of our country?”

Labour’s election campaign has been dogged by repeated allegations that Corbyn — a longtime champion of the Palestinians — has allowed anti-Jewish prejudice to fester in the left-of-center party.

The governing Conservatives, meanwhile, are defending an election platform that is light on policy proposals, as they try to avoid squandering the party’s poll lead before the nation votes on December 12.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s party is focusing its campaign on a promise to “get Brexit done” by taking Britain out of the European Union on the currently scheduled date of Jan. 31.

TRUMP: BORIS JOHNSON’S BREXIT DEAL COULD IMPERIL FUTURE TRADE WITH UK

“When we get Brexit done, believe me we will unleash a tide of investment into this country,” Johnson told supporters as he campaigned Monday in north Wales.

Culture Secretary Nicky Morgan weighed in, acknowledging that leaving the bloc would only be “the first big step” to completing Brexit since it would be followed by negotiations on a new trade relationship with the bloc.

In the upcoming election, which is taking place more than two years early, all 650 seats in the House of Commons are up for grabs. Johnson sought the early vote in hopes of winning a majority and breaking Britain’s deadlock over Brexit.

Iranian commander warns US, allies, ‘We will destroy you’

Iran‘s head of the Revolutionary Guard on Monday threatened to destroy the United States and its allies, accusing the nations during a televised speech of instigating violent protests that erupted earlier this month after the announcement of massive fuel hikes.

Speaking to tens of thousands of people holding signs with anti-U.S. slogans in Tehran’s Revolution Square, Gen. Hossein Salami accused the U.S., Britain, Saudi Arabia and Israel of fueling the deadly unrest.

“We have shown restraint. … We have shown patience towards the hostile moves of America, the Zionist regime (Israel) and Saudi Arabia against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said. “If you cross our red line, we will destroy you. We will not leave any move unanswered.”

The protests against a massive rise in fuel prices and a slash in government subsidies have further divided many Iranians and their religious regime. The country has seen an economic decline since the U.S. restored sanctions after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated during the Obama administration.

Many have complained of the inability to obtain jobs, travel abroad and soaring food prices and the cost of living. Some Iranians have seen their once middle-class lifestyle reduced to day-to-day struggles to stay afloat.

At least 143 people have been killed since Nov. 15, according to Amnesty International. The human-rights group accused Iranian security forces of using firearms against unarmed protesters from rooftops and helicopters.

“The rising death toll is an alarming indication of just how ruthless the treatment of unarmed protesters has been by the Iranian authorities and reveals their appalling assault on human life,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty’s research and advocacy director for the Middle East and North Africa.

Some demonstrators have accused the government of torturing those who’ve been arrested and detained.

AMERICAN REPORTER JASON REZAIAN, HELD IN IRAN FOR 544 DAYS, AWARDED $180M FOR CAPTIVITY, TORTURE

Iran has cut off internet access for several days to quell the unrest, making it difficult for groups to ascertain the extent of the violence on the ground. Authorities said banks and government offices have been set on fire and more than 1,000 people have been arrested.

During Monday’s rally, speakers called for capital punishment for rioters and further restrictions on social media. Some also criticized President Hassan Rouhani’s administration for the way the fuel hike was implemented.

Gasoline in Iran remains among the cheapest in the world, with the new prices jumping 50 percent to a minimum of 15,000 rials per liter. That’s 12 cents a liter, or about 50 cents a gallon. By comparison, a gallon of regular gas in the U.S. costs $2.59.

Iraq shaken by one of its ‘worst’ days of protests; at least 13 killed

At least 13 anti-government protesters were killed Sunday by Iraqi security forces in one of the “worst” days of violence in the country’s south amid widespread ongoing demonstrations against corruption, officials said.

Since the anti-government protests broke out in early October, at least 342 people have been killed and thousands more wounded in Baghdad and various southern provinces.

Demonstrators have taken to the streets by the tens of thousands over what they’ve called widespread corruption, a lack of job opportunities and poor basic services, despite the country’s oil wealth.

IRAQI PROTESTORS BLOCK MAJOR PORT, HALT COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY AMID ONGOING DEMONSTRATIONS

Seven protesters were killed Sunday in the southern province of Basra, near the main Gulf commercial port Umm Qasr, when Iraqi authorities used live fire and tear gas to diffuse the situation, according to security and hospital officials who did not want to be identified.

Four protesters reportedly were killed in Nassiriya province, and one killed in both Najaf, the seat of Iraq’s Shiite religious authority, and Diwanieh provinces.

At least 150 demonstrators were injured across Southern Iraq.

Protesters had cut roads leading to the Umm Qasr port, halting all trade activity.

In Nassiriya on Sunday, protesters used burning tires to block key roads and main bridges. Protestors set fire to the city’s Shiite Endowment building, a governing body regulating the administration of mosques.

In Baghdad, at least 13 people were injured as clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces continued for a fourth day.

In the capital city, at least 16 people have been killed and over 100 injured in the renewed clashes, which kicked off last Thursday as protesters tried to scale a concrete barrier on historic Rasheed Street causing security forces to fire live ammunition, tear gas and rubber bullets to repel protestors.

The leaderless uprising has aimed to demolish the sectarian system and unseat the government, including Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi.

In statements, the international community, including the United Nations and the United States, denounced the use of force against peaceful protestors.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week that the U.S. would hit Iraq with new financial penalties to punish the tactics used to repel demonstrators.

“We will not stand idle while the corrupt officials make the Iraqi people suffer,” Pompeo told reporters in Washington, adding that the U.S. “will use our legal authorities to sanction corrupt individuals that are stealing Iraqis’ wealth and those killing and wounding peaceful protesters.”

There was no indication that the protest movement has affected the production of oil, which has accounted for nearly 90 percent of Iraq’s state revenue through exports.

Hong Kong elections seen as win for pro-democracy candidates after massive turnout

Anti-government protestors prevailed on Sunday after polls closed in Hong Kong and pro-democracy candidates clinched nearly half of the seats on the ballot.

So far, pro-democracy candidates have won 269 out of 452 seats in 18 district council races, while pro-Beijing forces, who previously held 73 percent of the seats, have only won 30. Voters came out in droves — with a 71 percent turnout — up from 47 percent four years ago in the same elections, according to the Electoral Affairs Commission.

“This is political annihilation for Beijing and it’s going to have consequences that are going to reverberate not just in Hong Kong itself, but perhaps in China as well,” Asia analyst and foreign affairs journalist Gordon Chang said on Fox News’ “America’s News HQ” Sunday.

HELEN RALEIGH: US MUST STAND WITH HONG KONG FREEDOM FIGHTERS

The history-making victory for pro-democracy candidates in the elections marked a win in what has largely been seen as a referendum on the protest movement and China’s response to it.

Months of violent protests ravaged the city as demonstrators smashed storefronts of pro-nationalist businesses, lit toll booths on fire, shut down a major tunnel and engaged in battles with police, countering tear gas and water cannons with torrents of gasoline bombs, which resulted in more than 5,000 arrests.

Protests first erupted this past June after the government introduced an extradition bill that would send criminal suspects for trials to mainland China. That bill has now been abandoned, but the movement since expanded to include demands for democratic elections for the city’s leader and legislature, and an independent probe into alleged police brutality in suppressing the protests.

Pro-Beijing leaders said they hoped the violence would detract from the democracy cause but voting remained peaceful amid tight security at the ballot boxes and long wrap-around lines at polling stations.

The mounting pro-democracy victories will likely put intense pressure on Hong Kong’s leader to resign and on the Chinese government to confront the policy demands of protestors, analysts noted.

“Carrie Lam, the Hong Kong chief executive, she reports directly to see Jinping. She no longer has any freedom of action,” Chang said. “If he tells her not to give ground, which is what he’s been doing for the last several months, then you’re going to see Hong Kong erupt because, you know, people have expressed their will.”

“If the political establishment doesn’t make concessions, then we don’t know where this will go, but we know that will become probably much more violent and the protests will become even larger,” he added.

Among the winners were former student leaders and a candidate who replaced prominent activist Joshua Wong, the only person barred from running in the election. Rally organizer Jimmy Sham, who suffered a beating by hammer-wielding attackers last month, also triumphed, as did a pro-democracy lawmaker who had part of his ear bitten off by an assailant.

Hong Kong’s largest pro-Beijing political party suffered the biggest setback, with more than 100 of its 182 candidates defeated. Among the losing incumbents was controversial lawmaker Junius Ho, who was stabbed with a knife while campaigning this month.

President Trump expressed concern about the possible repercussions that the Hong Kong elections could have on an impending trade deal with China, in a “Fox & Friends” interview late last week.

“We have to stand with Hong Kong, but I’m also standing with President Xi,” Trump said. “He’s a friend of mine… I stand with Hong Kong. I stand with freedom. I stand with all the things that we want to do but we also are in the process of making the largest trade deal in history.”

The House and Senate, with overwhelming support, have passed a bill to protect the protestors that have violently canvassed the streets for months but the president has not said whether he will sign that bipartisan legislation.

Chang said Trump’s tempered approach towards China in regards to the elections “is not going to work.”

“His approach is consistent with four decades of American policy, whereas basically you don’t anger Chinese leaders because we think we need their goodwill,” Chang said of Trump.

“The Chinese have been stalling on the trade deal because they think that while they’ll stall, Trump won’t go after them on things like Hong Kong. So they think they’re getting the best of both possible worlds… if you want a trade deal, you’ve got to go after the Chinese.”

Chang suggested that the remedy to securing a trade deal would be to continue raising tariffs while simultaneously condemning Chinese human rights abuses and allegations of corruption.

“Increase those tariffs to the point where China just no longer is able to continue without access to the U.S. market because those tariffs are cutting off China’s ability to sell products in the U.S. We need to raise those tariffs so that China then has understands it has no choice but to stop stealing our intellectual property. Stop trade violations, stop all this stuff we don’t want them to do,” Chang said.
