At least four dead, two more injured after Australian gunman goes on shooting spree: reports

At least four people are dead and two more are injured after a lone gunman opened fire Tuesday night in a suburb just outside of Darwin, Australia, police said.

Northern Territory Police Duty Superintendent Lee Morgan confirmed that at least four people were killed when an unidentified 45-year-old man opened fire throughout the city using a pump-action shotgun, news.com.au reported.

At least two more people suffered gunshot wounds.

Trump baby blimp flies in London as protests greet president

As British Prime Minister Theresa May meets President Donald Trump on Tuesday, thousands of protesters plan to tell the U.S. leader he should have stayed at home.

Trade unions, women’s groups, peace campaigners and environmentalists are gathering in the capital to condemn Trump’s policies — and Britain’s decision to roll out the red carpet for a pomp-filled state visit.

Protests began with the flying of a giant blimp depicting the president as an angry orange baby, which rose from the grass of central London’s Parliament Square.

One group came dressed in the red cloaks and bonnets of characters from Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which is set in a dystopian, misogynist future America.

Leaders of Britain’s main opposition party are due to join demonstrators later at a rally in Trafalgar Square, just up the street from May’s Downing St. office. Police have erected barricades to stop protesters marching past the gates of Downing St.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn is due to address the protest, which will be attended by several senior lawmakers from his left-of-center party.

Emily Thornberry, Labour’s foreign affairs spokeswoman, said Trump was “a sexual predator” and a racist who did not deserve the honor of a state visit hosted by Queen Elizabeth II.

Thornberry told the BBC that the leader of Britain’s most important ally should be stood up to “the way you deal with a bully” because “if you bow down in front of them you just get kicked harder.”

Not everyone in London was unwelcoming.

Lewis Metcalfe said he came to the city from his home in northern England to show support for the president.

“I’m obviously going to be a minority today,” said Metcalfe, who wore a “Make America Great Again” cap.

“I don’t agree with all his policies. He’s not the greatest president in the world, but he does get things done.”

Trump dined with the queen at Buckingham Palace and took tea with Prince Charles on Monday, the first day of his three-day visit.

Things are likely to become more awkward on Tuesday when he meets May, who is in the final weeks of her premiership. The two leaders have sharply differing views on issues including Iran, Brexit and Chinese telecoms firm Huawei.

Trump has already criticized May’s handling of Brexit and said May’s rival Boris Johnson would make an “excellent” prime minister.

Faithful Muslims around the world begin celebrating Eid

Muslims across the Middle East and beyond are celebrating the start of the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr, a time for family and festivities.

The holiday marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, when devout Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. As in previous years, the Muslim world was split on when the start of Eid is, as it’s based on sighting the new moon by eye. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE start Eid on Tuesday, whereas Egypt, Syria, Jordan and others won’t start till Wednesday.

Ordinarily a festive occasion, this year’s Eid comes amid war and turmoil in more than one area, including Yemen and Sudan, where the ruling military on Monday conducted a deadly crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, killing at least 35.

The Latest on President Donald Trump’s visit to Europe (all times local):

As Prime Minister Theresa May meets President Donald Trump in Downing St., leaders of Britain’s political opposition will be joining protesters just up the street.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and senior lawmakers from his left-of-center party will be among thousands of demonstrators expressing noisy opposition to Trump’s visit on the streets of London.

Emily Thornberry, Labour’s foreign affairs spokeswoman, says Trump is “a sexual predator” and a racist and does not deserve the honor of a state visit.

Trump has dined with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace and taken tea with Prince Charles on his pomp-filled trip to the U.K.

5:30 a.m.

President Donald Trump will turn from pageantry to policy Tuesday as he joins British Prime Minister Theresa May for a day of talks likely to highlight fresh uncertainty in the allies’ storied relationship.

Trump and May are due to meet with corporate executives from the United States and United Kingdom, before an afternoon news conference on the second day of Trump’s state visit. The leaders’ top priority is a possible bilateral trade deal to take effect once the U.K. leaves the European Union.

Britain is scheduled to leave the EU on Oct. 31 unless both sides agree to an extension. Its position is in flux because May is stepping down as party leader Friday, setting in motion a race to succeed her as prime minister.

New Israeli election highlights tense ties to ultra-Orthodox

The trigger for Israel’s unprecedented repeat election touches upon one of the major fault lines in Israeli society — the role of the growing ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in modern life.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s prospective government collapsed last week over the issue of military draft exemptions for ultra-Orthodox men, a source of longtime resentment among the secular majority of Jewish Israelis who are required to serve.

The conflict over the draft law is just one of several deep disagreements over the role of religion in Israeli society. While religious parties wield significant political influence, experts say their cloistered communities are being left behind by modern society, with long-lasting negative consequences for the future of the country.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani says he will visit Pakistan on June 27 to open a new chapter in his country’s uneasy relationship with its neighbor and mend ties that are often characterized by mistrust and tit-for-tat accusations.

In his message to mark Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday that caps the fasting month of Ramadan, Ghani said he agreed to visit Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan after the two leaders met last week on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation meeting in Saudi Arabia.

“I hope the visit will be positive,” Ghani said.

Kabul routinely accuses Pakistan of harboring its Taliban enemies, yet in recent months Islamabad has lent its support to U.S. efforts to broker an end to Afghanistan’s long-running war.

The U.N. Security Council is set to discuss Sudan after its ruling military conducted a deadly crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

The United Kingdom and Germany requested the closed-door session, set for Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses and protest leaders say Sudanese security forces opened fire, torched tents and killed at least 35 people Monday at the demonstrators’ main sit-in site in the capital, Khartoum.

Sudan’s military council said Tuesday it was canceling all agreements with protest leaders and would call elections within seven months.

The council’s head, Gen. Abedel-Fattah Burhan, also said the coalition representing the demonstrators shares responsibility for the bloodshed.

Protesters had camped for months outside the military’s headquarters as the two sides negotiated over who would run the country after longtime strongman Omar al-Bashir’s ouster in April.

Australia’s central bank has cut its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a new record low of 1.25% in the first rate change in almost three years.

The change Tuesday was widely expected after Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Philip Lowe said two weeks ago that inflation was likely to remain below the bank’s target range of 2% to 3% a year and that a decrease in the cash rate would likely be appropriate.

The bank moves interest rates to keep inflation within the target range. Inflation is currently running at 1.3%.

The cash rate last moved in August 2016 when it was reduced by 0.25% to 1.5%.

The rate has not been increased since November 2010 when it rose 0.25% to 4.75%.

Argentine presidential candidate enters hospital for tests

The Argentine politician chosen by former President Cristina Fernández to be their party’s presidential candidate has checked himself into a hospital to undergo tests for a persistent cough.

Alberto Fernández of the left-leaning Unidad Ciudadana party told C5N television Monday that his personal physician advised him to have a check-up before starting campaigning for October’s election against conservative President Mauricio Macri.

Fernández says he has been coughing for two weeks but insists “there is no worrisome issue.” He acknowledges he had a clot on a lung a few years ago.

Cristina Fernández surprised Argentines in mid-May when she announced she would run for vice president rather than the presidency. Alberto Fernández isn’t related to her, but he served as her chief of staff for part of her time as president.

China tightens security on 30th anniversary of Tiananmen

Chinese authorities have stepped up security around Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, a reminder of the government’s attempts to quash any memories of a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests 30 years ago.

Extra checkpoints and street closures greeted tourists who showed up early Tuesday morning to watch the daily flag-raising ceremony. An honor guard marched across a barricaded street and raised the Chinese flag.

Foreign journalists were not allowed onto the square to record events.

Hundreds, if not thousands of people are believed to have been killed in 1989 when the government sent in the military to clear Tiananmen Square of protesters in an operation that began the night of June 3 and ended the following morning.

Any commemoration of the event is not allowed in China.
