Mark Levin: Forget gun control, politicians should scrap fuel strict fuel standards to save lives

Democratic politicians should consider revamping fuel efficiency standards instead of gun control laws if they want to help save lives in the future, according to Mark Levin.

Most Democrats revile automobile technology because it provides for more personal freedom, and they have sought to stifle it at the expense of people’s lives, Levin claimed Monday on “The Mark Levin Show on Westwood One.”

“So, starting with the Arab oil embargo of 1973, in which the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries — or OPEC — cut oil exports to the United States for supporting Israel in the Yom Kippur War, the automobile has been relentlessly demonized as the enemy of the environment.”

FLASHBACK: LOWER FUEL ECONOMY STANDARDS WILL SAVE LIVES, TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SAYS

The “Life, Liberty & Levin” host added that in reaction to the embargo, the federal government imposed Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards (CAFE) on automobiles in 1975, which leaders like former President Barack Obama sought to strengthen further.

“They attack the fact we are energy independent,” he said of some Democratic politicians. “They attack fossil fuels.”

“The left and the Democratic Party exists to destroy progress and its proponents argue that more efficient cars would cut gasoline use, thereby reducing reliance on foreign oil and pollution.”

He said, in addition, that people have died because cars are built to be less structurally resilient.

FLASHBACK: TRUMP UNRAVELS MORE OF OBAMA’S LEGACY, WITH PROPOSED FREEZE ON MILEAGE RULES

“In order to meet the per-gallon fuel efficiency standards set by Congress, the automobile industry was required to reduce the size and weight of vehicles,” he said, adding cars now, “contain more plastic and aluminum than ever before,” and leave occupants, “more vulnerable to injury and death from most kinds of accidents — Has anybody heard this issue by anybody?”

“Our Congress is coming back and we’re told they’re going to look at gun control, but they’re not going to look at the CAFE standards… it would destroy the narrative of the left.

More from Media

“The left, since 1975, vastly increased the CAFE standards, which this president has rolled back,” he added, going on to point to the levels initially set under the Obama administration.

When the standards were conceived in 2012, the fleet-wide mileage target for 2025 was 54.5 mpg. But because more trucks and SUVs are now being sold, that number was reduced to 51.4, the EPA said in 2018.

MARK LEVIN BLASTS DEMOCRATS, CNN OVER 7-HOUR ‘SCAM’: ‘THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

Levin said it was a good thing Trump rolled back those standards: “Can you imagine the number of people who would’ve been slaughtered on our roads as a result of such an insane and arbitrary figure.”

“This was celebrated in the media,” he said of the Obama-era increase of CAFE standards.

“So much depends on the priority of what we’re told — the agenda that is pushed… all we get is this endless propaganda.”

The Trump administration said in 2018 people would drive more and be exposed to increased risk if their cars get better gas mileage, an argument intended to justify freezing Obama-era toughening of fuel standards.

Overall, “improvements over time have better longer-term effects simply by not alienating consumers, as compared to great leaps forward” in fuel efficiency and other technology, the administration argued. It contended that freezing the mileage requirements at 2020 levels would save up to 1,000 lives per year.

New vehicles would be cheaper — and heavier — if they don’t have to meet more stringent fuel requirements and more people would buy them, the draft says, and that would put more drivers in safer, newer vehicles that pollute less.

Transportation experts dispute the arguments, contained in a draft of the administration’s proposals prepared in 2018, excerpts of which were obtained by The Associated Press.

Michael Waltrip’s ‘Blink of an Eye’ is the untold story of day Dale Earnhardt Sr. died

When NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip woke up on the morning of February 18, 2001 – the morning of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in Florida – he felt different.

Charlotte Motor Speedway in the early 90s. Benny Parsons interviews Dale Earnhardt Sr and Michael Waltrip. (Michael Waltrip)

“Some mornings I wake up and I can’t remember where I put my keys, but I remember every detail of that day vividly. I told my wife that they were not beating me that day, even though I had never won a NASCAR Cup race. Nobody had ever lost 462 races and then just won,” Waltrip told Fox News. “But Dale Earnhardt Sr. had told me I had the ability, and that day, I knew I would.”

At that point in his tumultuous career, Waltrip had completed some 462 Cup races – and failed to cross the line first in each and every one of them – branding him with the gong of NASCAR’s longest-ever losing streak. But under the Florida sun on the legendary racetrack, Earnhardt blocked the field of 40 cars to allow Waltrip a much-coveted victory.

“With 30 laps to go, I took the lead for the first time. Behind me was his son Dale Earnhardt Jr., and behind him was Dale Sr., the three of us working together,” Waltrip recalled. “And then crossing the line and taking that checkered flag – the emotion I felt was relief.”

It was a unique friendship amid the vicious arena of professional racecar driving. The celebration would be short-lived. Earnhardt Sr. crashed on the last lap.

New documentary to be released this month

“I’m a Christian and I believe in angels and God. I believe those angels took me straight to Victory Lane and I didn’t stop at the crash. I was waiting for Dale to walk through the gate but he didn’t. I knew something was wrong,” Waltrip said. “No one had answers. Half an hour later, my publicist delivered me the ultimate news.”

Waltrip’s story and his bond as the chronic underdog with the feared and famed Earnhardt — known in the sport as “The Intimidator” — is the subject of a new documentary, “Blink of an Eye,” directed by Paul Taublieb.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. in an interview for the new documentary

“I didn’t want this to be just a race car movie, it’s a movie about what happens when somebody really believes in you,” he said. “It’s an untold story, a marvelous story. Dale Earnhardt Sr. was the Michael Jordan or the Brad Pitt of the racecar world. When you deal with a real person and their family, there is a sense of responsibility.”

‘LAND OF THE LOST’ STAR KATHY COLEMAN RECALLS GETTING INTO TROUBLE ON SET, REVEALS WHY HIT SHOW CAME TO AN END

And while Earnhardt was a deeply private person, Taublieb hopes audiences see the many layers beneath his exterior as a ruthless competitor staring down the finish line.

“Dale had a heart of gold and truly cared about other people,” he surmised. “And Michael taught me as a filmmaker to own your emotions, be raw and share who you are. Some might think he was a loser, but he definitely was not.”

And for Waltrip, telling his story is a catharsis bound by faith and belief in overcoming adversity.

“For a few months after that Daytona, I was just going through the motions,” he added. “Then I came out of it, and I went back to Daytona to win.”

Director of Jessi Combs’ final film says movie will be dedicated to her: ‘She will be missed by all’

Days after race car driver and TV personality Jessi Combs died tragically trying to break a speed record, the director and producer of her latest film project is speaking out on her death.

Thomas Smugala, who worked with the 39-year-old on the upcoming movie “Interviewing Monsters and Bigfoot,” spoke with Fox News about finding out about Combs’ shocking death and what it means for the upcoming film.

“This was her first feature film,” Smugala told us. “We are dedicating the film to Jessi. She was a good friend and a wonderful person. We are also in the process of putting her on the poster and cover art before the release of the film.”

“Everyone was telling me not to use a reality show celebrity on the film, but I knew she would handle it just fine,” Smugala shared. “I mean, all she had to do was a long dialog-filled scene while being chased by the law. Jessi and I agreed that shooting it while she was actually driving would be best. So, with the help of the Cape Girardeau, Missouri Police, we closed off the streets and did it. Jessi rose to the occasion just as I thought she would.”

Combs also devoted time to give “motivation talks” to young girls on the set, according to Smugala.

“Everyone loved her on set. The cops, the crew, the caterer — she took time to talk to everyone,” he recalled. “She was the kindest and [most] uplifting person in the world. She was fierce. She was giving. She was loyal. She will be missed by all.”

Combs died while attempting to break her own land-speed record on Tuesday in Oregon. The 39-year-old was attempting to hit 619 mph, according to Autoblog.

JESSI COMBS’ FATAL CRASH UNDER INVESTIGATION: ‘THERE WAS A FIRE INVOLVED’

In a statement obtained by Autoblog, her family said, “It is with extreme grief, and in celebration of her life that her family and close friends share that race car driver, and TV personality Jessi Combs, passed away in a fatal crash, where she was pursuing a land speed record in the North American Eagle on August, 27th 2019 on a dry lake bed in Oregon.”

“Jessi was known for her bright smile, positivity, and tenacious pursuit of the fulfillment of her dreams,” the statement continues. “Her drive was infectious, and she served as a role model for young Girls, and Women around the world. People that loved her and followed her became family, all bonded together by adventure and passion.  Her fans adored her, and she lived to inspire them. Jessi’s most notable dream was to become the fastest woman on Earth, a dream she had been chasing since 2012. Combs was one of the rare dreamers with the bravery to turn those possibilities into reality, and she left this earth driving faster than any other woman in history.”

Combs’ partner, Terry Madden, honored her on social media.

“I have never loved or been loved by anyone as much as this amazing woman @thejessicombs she was truly my unicorn and I enjoyed every single minute that I had with her. She was the most amazing spirit that I have ever or will ever know,” he wrote.

Her accident is now being investigated by authorities.

On Wednesday, Lt. Brian Needham of the Harney County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that authorities are trying to recover laptops onboard the jet car (a race car propelled by jet engine). The computers said to be aboard Combs’ vehicle, the North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger, may hold additional keys for investigators.

New Hampshire bartender’s potty-themed license plate gets canned

No potty plates here.

A New Hampshire woman is trying to get her bathroom-themed license plate back after she was asked to turn it in for violating the state Department of Motor Vehicle’s rules for vanity plate phrasings.

The license plate reads: “PB4WEGO,” meaning “pee before we go.” The state DMV bans “phrases related to excretory acts.”

However, Wendy Auger of Rochester, N.H., who has had the advice-giving license plate for 15 years, argues that the matter is a free speech issue.

“If I have to take it off the plate, then I’m not going to be able to live free,” she said, acknowledging New Hampshire’s state motto “live free or die,” the New York Post reports.

Further, the bartender is claiming the license plate is not offensive.

“Who has a mom or dad or parental figure who hasn’t said that to kids before leaving the house?” Auger asked in an interview with Seacoastonline.com. “I’m not the type to sit here with a picket, but come on.”

“Where do you draw the line?” she added.

Auger is filing an appeal for the recall.

Former Texas star, NFL running back Cedric Benson killed in motorcycle crash

Cedric Benson, the former No. 4 pick in the 2005 NFL draft, was killed in a motorcycle crash in Austin, Texas on Saturday night, according to multiple reports. He was 36.

Law enforcement reported the crash occurred at 10:22 p.m. when a motorcycle hit a white minivan that was pulling out onto the roadway. Benson and another woman were killed and two others were injured. Details of the crash included a “vehicle and person on fire,” according to Austin-Travis County EMS.

His brother Dominic posted an emotional and grief-stricken status on Facebook, saying “my brother gone.” in the comments of his post.

Benson played for eight years in the National Football League, rushing for 6,017 yards and 32 touchdowns for the Bears, the Cincinnati Bengals and, briefly, the Green Bay Packers. He had his best year as an NFL player in 2009 with the Bengals, where he rushed for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns.

He also had his share of legal troubles throughout his time in the NFL, ranging from allegedly operating a boat while intoxicated in 2008 to assault charges in 2010 and 2011. Two days before his death, he appeared in a Travis County courtroom where he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drunken-driving charges from an incident on Feb. 18, 2017.

He received an outpouring of posts online from former teammates, friends and fans.

As many as 50 vehicles were involved, but early reports indicated only one serious injury resulted after chain-reaction crashes in heavy rain in North Carolina on Saturday night.

The crashes happened around 6 p.m. along the Interstate 40/85 exchange in Mebane, northwest of the Raleigh-Durham area, according to local media reports.

Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions as the State Highway Patrol and towing crews responded, Raleigh’s WRAL-TV reported.

Texas dad charged with homicide after 12-year-old daughter crashes SUV into man and his dog

A Houston man was charged with negligent homicide and endangering a child Friday after police say his 12-year-old daughter drove an SUV into a man and his dog, killing them both.

Prosecutors say Tomas Mejia, 42, was charged because he allowed a “child to operate a motor vehicle with no driver’s license and no driving experience.” Each charge carries a sentence of up two years in prison.

“She arrived in a white 2010 Cadillac belonging to someone else. After she refused to answer a question, the defendant used a front-end loader and dumped a bucket full of dirt on the roof of the driver side half of the car,” the sheriff’s office said.

The girlfriend was not injured but the driver’s side window was open. This caused dirt to fill up the air vents, center console, and power windows, the office said.

A New York City sanitation worker was arrested Wednesday for allegedly putting license plates he found in the trash on his car to avoid paying more than $17,000 in fines.

Jason Rivera, 45, of Staten Island, incurred the penalties for parking and traffic violations as well as unpaid E-Z Pass tolls, authorities said. He faces a charge of grand larceny, the New York Daily News reported.

A criminal complaint said Rivera found the plates in 2016 and gave them to a friend, who then returned them to Rivera a year later, the city Department of Investigation concluded.

“These types of crimes undermine the government’s ability to do its job and maintain a standard of safety on the roads,” said DOI Commissioner Magaret Garnett. “These offenses are particularly egregious when committed by a city employee who used his job as a means to commit a crime.”

Prosecutors say that Rivera racked up 72 parking and traffic violations totaling $5,500, as well as $1,793.50 in unpaid tolls and $10,600 in unpaid fees, the New York Post reported.

The plates were not registered to his vehicle, or any vehicle, the paper reported, making it difficult to determine who was responsible for the fines. The department began an inquiry after receiving a complaint from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

An investigator confronted Rivera about the pocketed plates and said he confessed to using them.

“Misusing New York State license plates, ignoring traffic and parking violations and failing to pay tolls are crimes that will result in arrest and prosecution,” Garnett said.

Rivera is expected back in court on Oct. 10.

Woman seen on video getting Tesla Model 3 chip implanted in arm to start car

One Tesla owner is hoping she’ll never lose her car key again.

Amie Dansby recently had her Tesla Model 3’s chip implanted in her forearm. The chip unlocks and starts the car.

Dansby, who goes by “Amie DD” online, is a software engineer, programmer and self-described “passionate technologist,” and now she can reportedly start up her wheels in a unique way.

Dansby uploaded a YouTube video on Aug. 8 titled “Tesla Model 3 Chip Install – Warning There is Blood,” during which she is seen going to a body modification studio and having her car’s RFID chip — encapsulated in a biopolymer — inserted in her arm.

WARNING: VIDEO MAY BE DISTURBING

In another video, “Tesla Model 3 Hack,” Dansby describes how she procured the chip from the card, saying she dissolved the keycard in acetone.

This is not Dansby’s first implanted RFID chip, short for radio-frequency identification.

“A few years ago I got this RFID implant in my hand,” she said in video footage, “and it’s just basic access control.”

“If I were to tap my hand to your phone, it would automatically open a browser and go to my webpage,” Dansby explains. “It also works with my front door.”

When she preordered her Tesla Model 3 a few years ago, Dansby said she found out that the keycard was going to use RFID-based technology to unlock and start the car.

But when she tried to see if she could upload the software off the Tesla keycard, she discovered that she couldn’t write it to the chip already in her hand, Dansby said.

“So it’s pretty secure. Good job, Tesla,” she joked. “So I’m just going to take the chip that I have in my valet card and encapsulate it, and implant that one in my hand.”

Dansby, who is also a 3D printer and avid cosplayer, told The Verge that the chip works but that the range “isn’t the greatest,” and her arm has to be within an inch of the console.

She posted to Twitter on Monday that her forearm was also swollen following the modification.

“My arm was swollen right after (none of my other chip implants read the first few days). I may have upgrades but unfortunately my body still heals at a human rate,” she wrote.

On Aug. 2, Dansby had posted on Hackaday, where she chronicled her yearlong project to biohack the Tesla keycard, saying that the implant “was a success.”

“I didn’t even cry! My yearlong Tesla Model 3 bio implant hack project wouldn’t be possible without Amal at vivokey encasing my chip implant in biopolymer and Pineapple to install it safely. My cyberpunk upgrades are complete,” she wrote.

A brand-new Model 3 starts at $39,740, according to Tesla’s website.
