Florida fisherman catches enormous tarpon from shore with help from drone: ‘People were freaking out’

Joshua Jorgensen has hooked a lot of fish in his lifetime, but he ranks a 100-pound-plus tarpon among his proudest personal achievements.

Jorgensen, the creator of the online fishing series BlackTipH, tells Fox News he’s caught plenty of bigger tarpon, but never such a massive catch while fishing from the shore.

“I’d say it’s one of the biggest accomplishments for a Florida angler to catch a tarpon from the shore – it’s a very challenging fish to catch,” Jorgensen says. “Everyone was freaking out.”

BROWN BEAR PHOTOBOMBS ‘OBLIVIOUS’ FISHERMEN IN WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER’S PIC

It all started a few weeks back, when Jorgensen and cameraman Davis Bennett decided to head south in Palm Beach County, after finding that Hurricane Dorian had muddied the more northern waters to the point where they looked like “chocolate milk.” The mullet were running, Jorgensen said, and he knew bigger fish couldn’t be far behind.

“We just winged it, we went south,” he said, the two of them eventually stopping in Boca Raton.

As seen in a recent episode of BlackTipH Fishing, Jorgensen and Bennett also chose that day to try out a new tactic for dropping bait via drone — something they learned from an Australian fisherman who developed the process.

“It’s like sonar from the sky … a total game-changer,” Jorgensen said.

But even though it was a game-changer, it wasn’t an immediate one: Jorgensen said they were out there from 5 a.m. until noon before they had any real luck.

“Morale was pretty low,” he said, adding that he and Bennet, along with a new buddy Trevor they met that day, were thinking of throwing in the towel and finally grabbing lunch. But Jorgensen had a feeling, and sent out one last mullet to try to get a bite. It worked.

After what he describes as a “good fight” that went on for over a half-hour, he headed out into the surf to go grab his catch — but not without a bit of trepidation.

“You know the sharks eat those things,” he said. “It’s very nerve-wracking, going in the water and grabbing it — who knows what’s following behind.

“That’s a big shiny fish! To a shark, that’s a big deal.”

But it was also a big deal to Jorgensen, who described the catch as a major accomplishment.

“From the shore… people dream of doing that,” he said.

Jorgensen estimates the tarpon weighed between 110 and 120 pounds. (BlackTipH/Joshua Jorgensen)

Jorgensen released the fish back into the ocean after making sure it was healthy, and estimates that it weighed between 110 and 120 pounds. He’s pretty sure that’s not a record, but it’s the biggest tarpon he’s ever seen taken from the shore, and he’s pretty proud.

“It’s so funny,” he said, “I’m a big believer that if you work really hard, you give 100 percent effort, things are going to work out.

“The more time you put in, the harder you work, the more likely you are to catch a fish.”

Thar she blows!

A father and son who were on a fishing trip off the coast of New Jersey last week managed to grab a once-in-a-lifetime video of a massive humpback whale breaching the water just feet from their boat.

The thrilling video was taken on Sept. 12, according to ABC 6.

IS THIS A FISH OR A DINOSAUR?

Mark Bevevino and his son Frank, both from Pennsylvania, told the station that something didn’t seem right while they were fishing for bunker– a baitfish that commonly swim in schools. The two thought they heard a whale surface but did not see any evidence.

Bevevino got his iPhone ready, just in case. His instincts proved to be right and he managed to grab a video of the massive whale surface.

Florida man who dragged shark in viral video sentenced to 10 days in jail

A Florida man who recorded a shark being dragged to its death behind a high-speed boat accepted a plea deal on Thursday and was sentenced to 10 days in jail.

Robert Lee “Bo” Benac III was the third man to face charges stemming from the June 2017 incident where a shark was seen on video being dragged by a rope from a 22-foot boat near Egmont Key. The men could be heard laughing at the shark on the recording, which was posted to social media and generated widespread outrage.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission led the prosecution against Benac and Michael Wenzel, 23, who took a similar plea deal in February, according to the Bradenton Herald.

In addition to the 10-day jail sentence, Benac was given 11 months of probation, ordered to pay a $2,500 fine and perform 250 hours of community service, 125 of which must be spent at an animal shelter, the outlet reported. He also lost his fishing license for three years.

Benac pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and violation of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rules.

Benac, Wenzel and Spencer Heintz, 35, were arrested in December 2017, but the charges against Heintz were eventually dropped, according to the Bradenton Herald.

Benac and Wenzel weren’t as lucky.

Following the incident, other videos began to surface involving the men. One showed Wenzel shooting a shark with a .38-caliber revolver and another showed the men pouring alcohol down the throats of fish that were alive, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“We were confident in what we could do and what we could show, but at the end of the day you can never be 100 percent confident in the jury system …,” Benac’s lawyer, Justin Petredis said. “That was a worry, that the anger and emotions of the jury would outweigh where we were hoping common sense would take over.”

Petredis said Benac took the plea deal because of how widely the videos had been shared online, the outlet reported. Benac also received credit for a day spent in the county jail.

Girl, 4, reels in ‘monster’ 33-pound fish with mini ‘Frozen’ fishing pole

She didn’t “let it go.”

A four-year-old girl from Illinois is a bona fide angler after catching a 33-pound flathead catfish while fishing with a miniature, “Frozen”-themed fishing pole.

Little Josie was fishing with her cousins and parents, Steve and Ashley, in the Delavan area on Aug. 28 when she made the impressive “monster” catch, according to a ViralHog video.

With some help from her father and a child-sized Disney “Frozen” Shakespeare pole rigged with a 50 lb. line, the fearless girl – who only weighs 30 lbs. herself – was able to pull in the beast.

“Hang on, hold it up like this,” Steve can be heard coaching his daughter in video footage viewed over 136,000 times on YouTube.

Josie, ready for the big moment in purple floaties and an oversized hair bow, shrieked with joy as they reeled in the fish during a windy day on the lake.

“Go, Josie, go!” someone cheered in the background.

With the scoop of a large net, the family pulled the catfish onto the dock, as Josie celebrated the big moment.

“I want to touch him!” the girl yelled, before getting disgusted, and then delighted, by the big fish she described as “slimy.” Sizing up her find, she even stretched herself out next to the creature for comparison, and appeared to be pleased to report that she was “taller” than it was.

Congratulated by her family, the youngster was totally in awe of her impressive catch.

An embarrassed country music star Dierks Bentley tweeted a video on Labor Day showing the singer getting cited by a Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer for fishing without a license.

“Hey Luke, those fish we caught in the Cottonwood Creek this week here in Buena Vista, we should probably getting a fishing license next time because I just got pulled over,” Bentley said in a Twitter video that tagged fellow country music superstars Luke Bryan and Hardy.

@lukebryan only caught one and this is my third in 30 mins,” Bentley wrote, with the Instagram post garnering attention from Colarado Parks and Wildlife.

“You’re next,” Bentley warned Bryan jokingly before the officer writing the ticket in the Twitter video said, “Hi, Luke.”

The U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday suspended its search for two firefighters who vanished after embarking on a fishing trip off the coast of Florida almost a week ago.

SEARCH FOR FIREFIGHTERS WHO VANISHED WHILE FISHING INTENSIFIES, NEXT 24 HOURS CRITICAL

Hundreds of local, state and federal agencies– as well as civilian volunteers– have scoured tens of thousands of miles along the East Coast in a six-day long search for two off-duty firefighters, Justin Walker and Brian McCluney. The two failed to return from a trip on a 24-foot fishing vessel off the coast of Cape Canaveral on Friday.

“We have reached a point where our computer modeling and our ability to search a given location are no longer allowing us to search with any reasonable degree of probability of success,” Capt. Mark Vaun, commander of the Coast Guard Sector in Jacksonville, told news outlets.

Officials called on civilian boater volunteers at ports in Savannah, Ga., South Carolina and even as far north as New England to help with search efforts, as the Gulf Stream current may have pulled the vessel northward along the East Coast, Orlando’s WESH reported

McCluney works for the Jacksonville department while Walker is a master technician with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department in Virginia, just outside the nation’s capital. The vessel they were aboard belonged to McCluney’s late father and has experienced mechanical problems in the past, McCluney’s wife told WKMG-TV.

Authorities say they are ramping up the search for two missing firefighters who set out by boat last week from the Florida coast and asked personal boat owners as far away as Savanah, Ga., to assist in the search.

Jacksonville Interim Fire Chief Keith Powers said the agency was calling for as “many boats” as could be mustered Tuesday in the ongoing search for Brian McCluney and Justin Walker. The firefighters departed last Friday on their outing aboard a 24-foot vessel from Port Canaveral.

“We are absolutely in a race against time,” U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Mark Vlaun told News4Jax.com. Officials said that this is still “very much a rescue effort.”

The captain said 12,600 square miles were covered on Tuesday and a total of 69,000 square miles were covered. He called the next 24 hours “critical.”

“We’re going to continue to throw everything we have at this until we reach a point where we know we can’t be successful,” he said.

The U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies have been searching a wide expanse of ocean between Cape Canaveral and Jacksonville off Florida’s east coast. On Monday, crews found McCluney’s fishing tackle bag some 50 miles off St. Augustine in north Florida.

McCluney works for the Jacksonville department while Walker is a master technician with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department in Virginia, just outside the nation’s capital.

McCluney’s wife said Tuesday the discovery of her husband’s tackle bag has given her hope that the men will be found. In a Facebook post, Stephanie McCluney added that she believed the bag was thrown overboard by the men to help those who are searching for them.

Hammerhead shark snatches catch from Florida fisherman’s hands, video shows

A Florida fisherman recorded video of his intense tug-of-war encounter with a huge hammerhead shark determined to steal his catch last week.

Rob Gorta, a fishing guide in the Tampa and St. Petersburg area for over 22 years, reeled in a tarpon that appeared to have bloody bite marks on its side.

With blood in the water, a hammerhead soon charged after the fish – and clearly didn’t plan on leaving emptyhanded.

“He just took it out of my hand!” Gorta could be heard yelling when the shark ripped the hooked fish from his grasp, in a video posted to his YouTube account.

Gorta and the shark battled in the waters off Anna Maria Island for the fish’s fate over the course of the 3-minute video. But, in the end, the hammerhead claimed its meal.

The charter captain told WFTS-TV that he desperately tried to unhook the tarpon to give the fish a chance to escape the shark. He estimated the predator measured 14 feet long and weighed over 1,000 pounds, according to WFLA-TV.

“I really felt bad for the fish, you know. They are an amazing fish, and I make a good living off of them,” Gorta told WFTS. “They are a lot of fun, and I have the utmost respect for them. There’s nothing I could really do to save that fish.”

Gorta wrote he couldn’t take the fish aboard his boat because Florida laws prevented lifting tarpon out of the water. He added that it would have been dangerous to bring the 180-pound fish aboard a 22-foot bay boat.

It’s illegal to lift tarpon over 40 inches in length out of the water, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee has said. In 2013, the committee made tarpon catch-and-release only.
