Rugby player takes metaphor to extreme with bizarre interview about getting back in saddle

An English rugby player took sports clichés to an entirely different level Wednesday when talking about his next match in a bizarre interview which has now gone viral.

Joe Marler, who plays for London-based Harlequins in the Gallagher Premiership, was previewing the club’s next match against Bath and essentially said his team needed to get back in the saddle.

ISRAEL FOLAU CLAIMS AUSTRALIA WILDFIRES RESULT OF COUNTRY LEGALIZING SAME-SEX MARRIAGE, ABORTION

Out of the gate, Marler explained his team’s disappointment following a 53-21 loss to French side Clermont Auvergne.

“I wasn’t hurting as much as the lads who were out there, but I definitely felt it and I know how hard the boys have taken that. They will be disappointed with the account that we put out,” Marler said, a fairly standard response for a sportsman after a bad defeat.

But we have got another week to get back on the horse, you know, and take that horse to the water. And you can ask that horse, you can say ‘hey, horsey, do you want to have a drink, or do you want to swim?’ It’s up to that horse to then realize what he wants to do in his life.

— Joe Marler

US RUGBY TEAM RECEIVES SUPPORT FROM PATRIOTS’ TOM BRADY, NATE EBNER BEFORE WORLD CUP MATCH

The interview then took a bizarre turn, however, when Marler added: “But we have got another week to get back on the horse, you know, and take that horse to the water. And you can ask that horse, you can say ‘hey, horsey, do you want to have a drink, or do you want to swim?’ It’s up to that horse to then realize what he wants to do in his life.”

He goes onto do an impression of an Irish talking horse that wants to greet fans at the club’s home stadium.

“That horse, at the moment, wants to go out on Saturday, he wants to clippity-clop all the way to The Stoop [the stadium] and he wants to say ‘Hello’ to those fans.

“And he goes ‘I’m sorry about the result last week, but I’m going to give a better performance here at home against Bath.’ He’s a slightly Irish horse. So we are looking forward, like I say, to getting back on that horse.”

Just to be clear, Marler said there’s no way he’s riding that horse.

“I don’t like horses. I can’t ride,” he said.

Florida man had meth ‘wedged deep within’ belly button, cops say

A Florida man was arrested Saturday after allegedly hiding his meth stash in a peculiar place: his belly button.

Martin Skelly, a 41-year-old from St. Petersburg, was taken into custody after investigators caught him with a 28-gauge needle full of drugs at a McDonald’s in Clearwater.

Before he was transported for booking, authorities asked Skelly if he had any other contraband in his possession, warning him he could face additional charges if anything illegal was discovered while he was in jail, The Smoking Gun reported, citing an arrest affidavit.

Skelly denied having anything else, but during intake at the Pinellas County Jail, a sheriff’s deputy “discovered a small bag of crystal powder substance wedged deep within [his] belly button cavity.”

The substance tested positive for methamphetamine, officials said. Skelly, a 380-pound, 5-foot-9 man, reportedly told an officer after the drugs were found that he “was just being dumb and not thinking.”

Maine owl gets lift in state trooper’s patrol car after rescue

It was a tough night for one large owl but a hoot for a Maine state trooper, according to a report.

A car apparently struck the owl in Manchester, outside Augusta, Friday night, leaving it in a disoriented state in the middle of a busy road.

That’s where a trooper on patrol, Sam Tlumac, found it, WTHR-TV reported Tuesday.

California man who stole endangered lemur from zoo sentenced to prison

California man who last year busted an endangered ring-tailed lemur out of his cage at the Santa Ana Zoo was sentenced on Monday to three months in federal prison, prosecutors announced.

Aquinas Kasbar, 19, of Orange County, also was ordered to pay $8,486 in restitution to the zoo, according to a news release from The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California.

Kasbar broke into the zoo after hours on July 27, 2018, and stole North America’s oldest ring-tailed lemur in captivity to keep the endangered animal as his pet, prosecutors said, adding that he used bolt cutters to cut a hole in the zoo’s enclosures for lemurs and capuchin monkeys, which caused several of the animals to escape. Crews later recovered those animals.

CALIFORNIA TEEN FACES YEAR IN JAIL AFTER STEALING LEMUR FROM ZOO IN LATE-NIGHT HEIST

After he stole the 33-year-old ring-tailed lemur named Isaac, Kasbar placed the animal in a plastic drawer that did not have ventilation holes, according to court papers.

The next day, Kasbar abandoned Isaac, leaving the animal in front of a Newport Beach hotel, according to court documents, which added that the ring-tailed lemur was in the same plastic drawer with two notes placed on it. The notes read, “Lemur (with tracker)” and “This belongs to the Santa Ana Zoo it was taken last night please bring it to police,” prosecutors said.

Isaac was returned unharmed to the Santa Ana Zoo and the break-in caused $8,486 worth of damage, according to investigators.

This past July, he pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of unlawfully taking an endangered species.

The misdemeanor count carried a maximum penalty of one year in federal prison and a $100,000 fine, the Orange County Register reported.

The ring-tailed lemur is native to Madagascar and is on a list of the 25 most endangered primates, according to court documents, which blamed the illegal pet trade in part for its endangered status.

Virgin Mary statues at Connecticut haunted house spark outrage, confusion

This is why it’s important not to mix up holidays.

A haunted house attraction in Connecticut reportedly found itself in the center of a controversy thanks to some poorly placed statues meant for a future Christmas decoration.

The Nightmare on Wolcott Street in Waterbury decided to cover two statues of the Virgin Mary with sheets at the request of the mayor’s office, WTKR reported. Apparently, some locals mistook the statues as being part of the attraction and found it to be disrespectful.

HALLOWEEN HAUNTED HOUSE RELEASES PICTURES OF TERRIFIED VISITORS

The owners of the haunted house attraction took to Facebook to explain the situation. Their post began, “First we want to apologize to anyone who’s been offended by the pic of the statues. They have nothing and will never have anything to do with Nightmare On Wolcott Street. That’s why they’re placed on the back dock in front of the restoration shop and not at our front entrance of Nightmare on Wolcott Street.”

The owners went to explain that most visitors wouldn’t even see the statues, except for customers that park in their lot. They also confirmed to Fox News that the statues had been sitting in that location for about five years and hadn’t ever been connected with the Halloween attraction until this year.

“Our blessed mother has never and will never be part of our haunted attraction,” the post continued. “They’re placed where they are at the restoration shop because we’re planning to restore them and use them for an upcoming 2020 Christmas nativity scene. Isn’t passing judgment before knowing the facts one of the biggest issues in today’s society? All it does is cause chaos like this. The statues will be covered while Nightmare on Wolcott Street is open in hopes to bring some peace to this matter!!! Thank you!”

Renee Dearborn spoke with Fox News and confirmed the confusion had been cleared up. Thankfully, the controversy didn’t seem to hurt business. While the weekend before Halloween usually has been busy, Dearborn confirmed that they saw an uptick in business this year.

Dearborn said she wanted to clarify that she couldn’t attribute it all to the attraction’s recent press. According to her, about half of the visitors hadn’t even heard of the controversy.

She also confirmed to Fox News that once the last ticket is sold for the haunted house attraction, the plastic wrap will be coming off the statues.

An Iowa woman died on Saturday from an explosion in what appears to be a gender-reveal party gone wrong, officials said.

The victim, only identified as a 56-year-old woman, was at the party in Knoxville when authorities were called about a woman who was severely injured in an explosion.

COUPLE’S GENDER-REVEAL IDEA BACKFIRES WHEN BALLOON FLIES AWAY

Once investigators arrived at the scene, roughly 40 miles southeast of Des Moines, the woman was pronounced dead, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

It was determined the woman died after the gender reveal caused an explosion, the Des Moines Register reported. Debris from the explosion flew through the air, reportedly hitting the victim and severely wounding her.

Officials did not release further information about the incident. However, gender-reveal parties often make headlines for their disastrous outcomes.

Another gender-reveal party that resulted in an explosion was in April 2017, when a U.S. Border Patrol agent shot a rifle of the highly explosive substance Tannerite near Green Valley, Ariz., sparking the Sawmill Fire that caused more than $8 million worth of damage.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

An off-duty Texas police officer shot his own son on Saturday night after he mistook him for an intruder, authorities said.

The “long-term veteran” officer of the Dallas Police Department arrived at his home in DeSoto on Saturday around 6 p.m. and thought a trespasser was inside.

The “intruder” was his adult son, according to Pete Schulte, a spokesperson for DeSoto police. The police officer called 911 and identified himself as an off-duty Dallas cop.

MEMPHIS COP ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTED WOMAN WHO TRIED TO EAT HOT DOG AFTER HE TOLD HER NOT TO

Investigators arrived to find the son, identified as in his 20s, as”lightly struck by a bullet in his arm.” The officer told authorities he mistook his son for an intruder, Schulte said.

It was a mistake. He thought that there might have been an intruder in the house. He didn’t know who was supposed to be there and so forth,” Schulte said. “It was a startling situation, it was an accident.”

The spokesman said the shooting happened in the garage area of the property. He said the officer got home and noticed “the house was not in the state that he had left it” — the garage door was open, and “some doors were locked that weren’t locked” when he left earlier in the day.

“He thought that maybe something had happened inside and, of course, we did ask the question, ‘Why didn’t you call us, the DeSoto Police Department?’ and like most people say is like, ‘I just wanted to know what was going on before I wasted a call to 911,'” Schulte said the off-duty officer told police.

Authorities, the spokesperson said, want people to know “that if you come home and something doesn’t feel right, [it] doesn’t bother us at all, go ahead and call 911, so we can come out and check it out .”

Schulte said the off-duty officer’s version of events is consistent with evidence at his home, and that no charges have been filed at this time.

Neither the father nor son were identified.

A 23-year-old woman in Arkansas lost her father four years ago, but she continued to text his phone every day to update him about his life. She never got a response from the number, until this week.

Like she did every day, Chastity Patterson, of Newport, texted her father’s number on Thursday, the night before the fourth anniversary of his death.

“Hey Dad it’s ME,” she said. “Tomorrow is going to be a tough day again!”

FLORIDA THIRD GRADER CALLED A HERO FOR PREVENTING POSSIBLE SCHOOL SHOOTING

In her texts, Patterson recapped all of the highs and lows she had gone through over the past four years without her father by her side. She talked about how she beat cancer and has been taking better care of herself like she promised her father she would. She talked about how she finished college and graduated with honors and how she’d fallen in love and had her heart broken, “(you would have killed him),” she told her father.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you needed me the most, but one day we will [sic] our chance to watch that game!” she wrote in her latest text.

ARKANSAS HUNTER DEAD AFTER DEER HE SHOT GETS UP, ATTACKS HIM

This week, Patterson received a response from a man who had been receiving her daily messages these past four years.

“My name is Brad and I lost my daughter in a car wreck August 2014 and your messages have kept me alive,” the response read. “When you text me, I know it’s a message from God.”

“I have listened to you for years and I have watched you grow more than anyone,” Brad said. “I have wanted to text you back for years, but I didn’t want to break your heart.”

He said he wished his daughter would have become the woman Patterson is. “I’m sorry you have to go through this but if it makes it any better, I am very proud of you! P.S. I think your father would be happy to know you bought another dog instead of having children.”

Patterson posted the exchange to Facebook. “Today was my sign that everything is okay and I can let him rest!” It has since gone viral.

In a later post, Patterson revealed that the loved one she’d lost, Jason Ligons, was not her biological father, but she called him dad.

“Jason was not my ‘biological’ father, but blood could not make him any closer!” she said.

“He never missed a school dance, prom, my games and YES he would give me long talks about my mouth and attitude. I had to introduce my boyfriends to him (If I was allowed to date) and he would act like a normal dad and give us the long talk,” Patterson said.

“I shared my messages for my friends and family to see that there is a God and it might take 4 years, but he shows up right on time!” she added.

Florida inmate charged with feeding pet iguanas to alligator at sheriff’s zoo

A Florida inmate has been arrested for feeding pet iguanas to an alligator at the sheriff’s zoo — next to the jail — after fellow inmates ratted him out, investigators said.

Jason Aaron Gibson, a 40-year-old suspected car thief, was one of the select inmates given the “privilege” of working outside at the petting zoo on Stock Island, officials at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office told the Miami Herald.

Two other inmates who worked at the farm were left “distraught” and “heartbroken” after witnessing Gibson toss iguanas to a six-foot alligator named Irwin multiple times, officials said.

“I was so proud of them for stepping forward,” Jeanne Selander, a civilian jail employee running the farm, told the Herald. “They just couldn’t accept that. They really cared. I’m so sad they had to witness it.”

The death of “Mojo,” a large iguana who had lived at the farm for over a decade, hit staff members at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm particularly hard.

“He was more of a pet,” Selander said. “I’m still in disbelief. Thirteen years I’ve been doing this and I’ve never had anyone do anything to the animals.”

Irwin the gator, which reportedly was fed dead rats once a week, ate at least one smaller iguana but didn’t eat Mojo because it was “too big,” Selander said. The gator reportedly held Mojo underwater for 30 minutes and left its carcass in the habitat.

“Occasionally an iguana falls in and that’s the circle of life,” she told the Herald. “You don’t physically catch one and feed it. That is so cruel.”

Gibson was arrested Monday he admitted to the deeds, claiming the iguanas were a “nuisance” that “terrorize the other animals” at the farm, according to an arrest report obtained by the paper.

He was charged with two counts of felony animal cruelty causing death, pain and suffering. He had been awaiting trial since June on a charge of grand theft auto.

The petting zoo opened in 1994 and has housed more than 150 animals, according to the Herald. The farm has been open to the public for free twice a month and has held special holiday events.
