Illinois lawmaker pooped on by pigeon while discussing problem of pigeons pooping at train station

An Illinois lawmaker speaking to the media on the issue of pigeon poop at a train station in Chicago was pooped on — by a pigeon — mid-interview.

State Rep. Jaime Andrade, D-Chicago, was discussing the problem with a WBBM-TV reporter outside the Irving Park Blue Line station when the bird sprung into action.

SPANISH TOWN SLAPS TAX ON DOG OWNERS FOR POOP CLEANUP

“Oh, did I just get… No, I didn’t… I did, didn’t I? I got a little bit,” Andrade told the reporter in a story published Monday, feeling the bird feces on his head. “I’ll just have to go clean up. … That’s what happens to my constituents. They get s— on all time.”

The sidewalks outside of the station are covered in bird waste and feathers.

Andrade said he’s been trying to fix the problem. One of his ideas is to ask the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) to install a hose line for power washing when it constructs new escalators at the stop.

CHINA BANS FLYING PIGEONS, DRONES AS BEIJING PREPS FOR 70TH ANNIVERSARY MILITARY PARADE

One CTA rider, Derek Barthel, told WBBM that after the news station reported on the problem over the summer, the station was washed, but “then nothing at all happened.”

Andrade said that in 2018 he requested $6 million in the state budget for the Irving Park Blue Line.

“This is the mistake, when I said literally $6 million for Irving Park Blue Line,” he told the news outlet. “The funds are for the CTA Blue Line, and so probably, and with the funds where it came from can only be used for construction.”

The problematic place in question is underneath the actual station and is overseen by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The sidewalk the pigeons keep pooping on is reportedly under the jurisdiction of the City of Chicago.

The lawmaker said that the money was voted on and approved at a meeting three weeks ago to fund new escalators at the station.

California man warns of fake mass shooting at county fair so he wouldn’t have to go with parents, police say

A California man was arrested Friday after he falsely reported a mass shooting was going to happen at the Los Angeles County Fair — simply because he didn’t want to attend with his parents, police said.

Erik Villasenor, 22, allegedly sent an email to fair staff around 2:45 p.m. Friday, which police said contained a warning: “Hello, I was told that someone was planning on doing a mass shooting on Sunday at the fairgrounds. I just wanted to inform you guys already.”

“That was all that was said,” Pomona Police Chief Michael Olivieri Jr. told reporters at a news conference Saturday. “Obviously in today’s world, a message like that is very concerning.”

MASS SHOOTINGS AND MENTAL ILLNESS IN AMERICA: INSIDE THE DEBATE

Fair staff immediately reported the threat to the police department, which worked quickly with the FBI and anti-terror liaisons to investigate what they presumed was a mass shooting tip.

Within hours, authorities identified two to three suspects connected to the email address that sent in the threat, and, eventually, investigators narrowed that list down to Villasenor through his digital footprint, Olivieri said.

FLORIDA MOM INSISTS HER SON WHO ALLEGEDLY THREATENED MASS SHOOTING IS ‘JUST A LITTLE KID’ MAKING JOKES

Authorities interviewed Villasenor and said he “ultimately admitted it was a hoax.” Police said Villasenor made the false threat because he didn’t want to attend the fair with his parents, which he was scheduled to do Sunday.

Erik Villasenor, 22, allegedly told police someone planned a mass shooting at the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona, Calif., authorities said. (Google)

“Though he’s 22, he felt that it was appropriate to send this threat and we believe it was with the intent that it would spark some chaos and commotion, it would be captured on the media, and that then he could use that as an excuse to his parents to not go to the fair,” Olivieri said. “Kind of a crazy thing.”

Villasenor was arrested around midnight and booked at the Pomona City Jail, police said.

The CEO of the Los Angeles County Fair, Miguel Santana, said the swift resolution “speaks to the safety plan put in place” for the fair, which is being held at the Fairplex in Pomona until Sept. 22.

Santana previously told the Los Angeles Times that Fairplex spent $200,000 to build a command center to coordinate a quick response during emergency situations “in light of the environment” — most likely a reference to recent mass shootings across the U.S., particularly the attack at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California in July, which left three people dead.

“We always take security seriously, but we’ve made a deliberate effort to strengthen our security system,” Santana said.

Fire erupts on field before game between Colts and Titans in Tennessee

A game between the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans got off to a scorching start as a large fire erupted at Nissan Stadium in Nashville just before both teams were set to play.

A piece of pyrotechnics equipment designed to shoot flames during introductions ignited near the sidelines where Titans players usually enter the field, making for a crazy scene on Sunday afternoon just prior to the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

A man is facing a driving under the influence charge after striking a police officer while driving a scooter and then crashing into a parked car in downtown Denver on Saturday, according to officials.

The Denver Police Department said on Twitter the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of 21st and Market Streets near Coors Field.

The scooter operator struck a police officer who was directing traffic at the intersection before crashing into a parked vehicle.

An international drug smuggling ring was busted in Australia — with the help of an angry seal.

The seal prevented the getaway of two foreign nationals from a small island off the Geraldton coast, according to reports.

“They woke it up and it jumped up with its big chest out and bellowed at them,” Damien Healy, Geraldton Volunteer Marine Rescue Service vice commander, told ABC radio, according to the BBC.

The two foreigners were on a yacht that they ran aground on Sept. 2 before they attempted to flee in a dinghy, officials said. They were caught the next day after the seal interceded.

Cops seized one ton of illicit drugs after their arrests.

Two other foreign nationals and an Australian appeared in court in connection with the seizure on Thursday.

Maryland hotel room fight actually just loud sex, woman says before allegedly getting in fight with guard

The sounds of two women engaged in what those nearby believed to be a fight inside a Maryland hotel room Monday reportedly led to a surprising sexual confession, a visit from police and gunfire.

When two employees at the Days Inn in Towson received a call from one of the hotel’s rooms, they heard in the background a commotion — that they said sounded like fighting — leading the business’ security guard to call police.

Officers responded to the hotel room, and spoke with two women who were reportedly staying there — but they said they weren’t fighting, they were just having sex, according to WMAR.

The women were subsequently ordered to leave the hotel. After they left, one of the women went back to the room for a forgotten cell phone, while the other allegedly began to fight with hotel staff.

A police officer from Baltimore County who was nearby and heard the gunshot ran into the Days Inn and arrested Daughtrey — who allegedly bit the security guard during the incident.

Search on for ‘monkey’ in Texas town after reports of primate swinging through trees, attacking residents: reports

Police and animal control staffers continued their search Tuesday for a loose primate that has been reportedly spotted swinging through trees and terrorizing residents in small Texas town over the past two days.

Police in Santa Fe, which is south of Houston, said they’ve been fielding reports of a primate on the run since Monday. The department said it received at least two reports of sightings officials believe to be credible. Residents on social media have also claimed, without evidence, a loose primate tried to attack them, their dogs and at least one child.

Bayou Animal Services, the town-run animal control agency in Santa Fe, said it enlisted a drone from the League City Police Department to help search tree tops for the primate. The agency also said it called registered primate owners in the area to confirm their animals were accounted for, the Galveston County Daily News reported.

“We’d take it seriously no matter what,” Sarah Haywood, director of Bayou Animal Services, told the newspaper. “We’re hoping it’s not a hoax, because that would be a severe waste of time.”

Bayou Animal Services said it could not confirm what type of “monkey” they were looking for because no known video or photographs have been taken of the animal. The Texas Wildlife Commission believes the primate is a chimpanzee, which is an ape, not a monkey, Houston’s KTRK reported.

Authorities said they received two independent reports Monday evening and then Tuesday morning of a loose primate spotted within the same general area, which made the sightings seem credible, Santa Fe Police Department spokesman Greg Boody told the Galveston County Daily News.

Animal control officials and police have reached out to the people who posted about alleged primate attacks on social media to investigate further but have yet to receive responses.

“Just had a monkey try to attack me, while checking my mail,” a woman reportedly wrote on Facebook, according to the New York Post. “I’ve spent the last 20 minutes in my car.”

Bayou Animal Services said in a Facebook update Tuesday that people should not to put themselves in potential harm’s way by interfering with experts searching for the animal.

“The safety of residents, and the animal are top priority,” the agency wrote on Facebook. “Please allow the primate team to do their job, and please keep phone lines free in order for us to take actual verifiable reports.”

Bottle with Texas man’s ashes returned to Gulf of Mexico after washing up on Florida beach

A bottle containing the ashes of a Texas man along with some handwritten notes from loved ones has been returned to the Gulf of Mexico, resuming its ocean journey after it washed up on a Florida Panhandle beach.

The beachgoer who found the bottle near Miramar Beach handed it over to local authorities last week. Inside were some of the ashes of Brian Mullins, a tow truck driver from Garland, Texas, who died earlier this year at age 39.

Sgt. Paula Pendleton of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office said she cried while reading the notes, which included the phone number of the deceased man’s family. His mother had placed four $1 bills in the bottle to help pay for the phone calls she hoped people would make to update her family on the bottle’s journey.

“This bottle contains the ashes of my son, Brian, who suddenly and unexpectedly passed on March 9, 2019,” one of the handwritten notes said. “I’m sending him on one last adventure.”

A second note, written on wrinkled school paper, especially moved Sgt. Pendleton, whose husband died last year.

“When my father passed, I was 14-years-old,” the message read. “It has struck our whole family pretty hard and, so far, it has been a very hard road. But, like my granny said, he loved to be free. So, that’s exactly what we are doing.”

Pendleton knew she had to help.

“I was overwhelmed with emotion,” Pendleton recalled. “I sat in here, in my patrol car, and cried like a baby.”

Pendleton enlisted an acquaintance who owns a charter boat to ferry the ashes far off the Florida coast. And on Friday, the bottle, the dollar bills and the ashes were again at sea.

“He was an avid fisherman. He wanted to travel the world,” his mother Darlene Mullins said, noting that her son had never gone ocean fishing. Garland, a suburb northeast of Dallas, is about 300 miles from the Gulf Coast.

Unable to afford to take her son’s ashes out to sea herself, the mother entrusted the task to relatives bound for Florida. While visiting the small Panhandle community of Destin in early August, the bottle was released into the tide.

“We thought it might have been the last we saw of the bottle,” Darlene Mullins said. “But we’ll see where it turns up again.”

US Navy boat missing since last year found floating off Ireland coast

A U.S. Navy boat that was last seen a year ago was discovered by a ferry crew off the coast of Ireland this week.

A crew from the Doolin Ferry Co. spotted something floating in the water Monday while en route to Inis Oirr, an island in Galway Bay in the North Atlantic Ocean, the company said.

“Later we sent one of our crews and ferry to tow the boat [with the help of a local fishing boat] to the beach at Inis Oirr. Lots of islanders helped to bring it to the beach and we began to wonder where it had come from,” Doolin Ferry said.

It turns out the boat is a U.S. Navy High Speed Maneuverable Surface Target (HSMST) whose former home was about 3,300 miles away in Norfolk, Va.

“This boat was built in 2015 and it’s likely that it was lost during a training exercise, and it remained in the water drifting until it ended up in the water close to Inis Oirr and was discovered by the crew of the Doolin Express,” the company said.

“Fascinating how it washed up in Ireland. Would love to know its story,” one person said.

Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division spokesman Timothy Boulay told The Virginian-Pilot this week that the vessel was lost at sea in September 2018 during a missile test and evaluation exercise approximately 75 miles off the coast of Norfolk, home to Norfolk Naval Station. The Atlantic Target and Maritime Operations team searched the HSMST for five hours to no avail and later notified the Coast Guard of the potential navigation hazard, Boulay said.

Boulay said it wasn’t surprising the boat made it across the Atlantic, since the vessel is filled with foam so that it won’t sink.

“Our people are not surprised it made it to Ireland,” he said.
