A lion mummy may have been discovered at famed pyramid site

Archaeologists in Egypt have found a large animal mummy that may contain the remains of a lion or lioness.

Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities said on Monday the mummy was excavated in Saqqara, a town south of Cairo that was a vast necropolis in antiquity and is home to the famed Step Pyramid.

Archeologists frequently find mummified cats, but the recovery of a lion is rare. In 2004, the first lion skeleton was found, revealing the sacred status of the animal during ancient times.

20 ANCIENT WOODEN COFFINS DISCOVERED IN EGYPTIAN NECROPOLIS

Egypt’s Antiquities Minister Khaled Al-Anani visited the site on Thursday, according to a Facebook post by the country’s Ministry of Antiquities. The remains of a number of cats were found at the site, some of which were large, officials said.

More details of the discovery will be announced on Nov. 23, the Ministry of Antiquities added.

The pyramid complex of Saqqara is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The complex is a “masterpiece of architectural design,” according to UNESCO, which notes that the Step Pyramid, or Pyramid of Djoser, is the first pyramid ever built.

Earlier this year, archaeologists also uncovered an ancient cemetery near the famous Giza pyramids just outside Cairo.

Last year, Egypt’s Antiquities Ministry announced the discovery of an ancient necropolis near the Nile Valley city of Minya, south of Cairo. The large cemetery is located north of Tuna al-Gabal area, a vast archaeological site on the edge of the western desert. It includes several burial shafts and hosts more than 1,000 statues and some 40 sarcophagi as well as other artifacts.

Ancient Egyptian ‘industrial zone’ uncovered in Luxor’s ‘Valley of the Monkeys’

New archaeological discoveries have been made in Luxor, Egypt, -including an “industrial zone,” according to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities.

Archaeologists found 30 workshops in an area “composed of houses for storage and the cleaning of the funery furniture with many potteries dated to Dynasty 18,” reports Reuters.

One finding was in the West Valley, also referred to as the Valley of the Monkeys, reports Ahram Online, and the other was in the East Valley, which is home to the country’s famous pharaonic tombs.

Mysterious destroyed temple and treasure discovered in underwater ‘Egyptian Atlantis’

A mysterious temple has been discovered in the sunken Ancient Egyptian city of Thônis-Heracleion, which has been described as the “Egyptian Atlantis.”

Archaeologists have found a Greek-style temple, as well as several sunken treasures, such as coins or jewelry in Thônis-Heracleion, which was discovered in 2001. The temple slid into a canal running south of it and ultimately, destroyed the city, according to a statement from the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology obtained by Fox News.

“Only a small portion of the canal was excavated, but it seems that the remains of the temple filled it for around 300 feet (c. 90 m), indicating both the size of this temple and the scale of its destruction,” the statement reads. “The excellent preservation conditions suggests that future excavations here hold in store the potential for other discoveries of importance.”

In addition to gold coins and jewelry, silver and bronze ritual artifacts, along with ceramics, were discovered at the site. The Institute noted that “most of these objects were intact despite the catastrophe and their 2,200 years in the clay.”

The main temple, as well as the small, Greek-style temple (also known as a “tholos”) date back to the 4th century BC.

The landslide that caused the temple to slide into the canal was the result of an earthquake, which also caused a tidal wave that leveled most of the city.

Once a center of religious power, Thônis-Heracleion contained the temple where all the new Pharaohs had to go to receive the titles of their power as the universal sovereign from the God Amun, the statement added.

Mentioned in a number of ancient texts, according to The Sun, Heracleion was beset by a number of natural disasters over the years that eventually caused the remaining islets to be swallowed by the sea in the 8th century A.D.

King Tut bust that Egypt claims was ‘stolen’ sells for $6 million

A controversial 3,000-year-old stone sculpture of boy pharaoh King Tutankhamun has been sold for nearly $6 million at auction in the U.K., despite protests from the Egyptian government.

The brown quartzite head depicting King Tut sold for more than 4.7 million pounds ($5.94 million) in London Thursday evening.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry had demanded that the auction house Christie’s provide documents proving the statue’s ownership and said Egypt holds rights to the piece based on its current and previous laws.

KING TUT STATUE SPARKS ROW AS EGYPT ATTEMPTS TO HALT AUCTION

But Christie’s defended the sale process. The auction house says it carried out “extensive due diligence” to verify the provenance of the statue and had “gone beyond what is required to assure legal title.”

In a statement released Thursday, Christie’s described the sculpture as “a rare, beautiful and important work.”

“We recognize that historic objects can raise complex discussions about the past; yet our role today is to work to continue to provide a transparent, legitimate marketplace upholding the highest standards for the transfer of objects,” the auction house added. “There is an honorable market for ancient art and we believe it is in the public interest that works come out into the open with the opportunity for them to be researched, as well as seen and enjoyed by global audiences.”

The pharaoh’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings, which was full of spectacular artifacts, was discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922.

Mostafa Waziri, chief of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, recently told that Associated Press that he believes that the head belongs to King Tut, but it was not found in the tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

KING TUT MYSTERY SOLVED: NO ‘HIDDEN CHAMBER’ IN FAMOUS TOMB, EXPERTS SAY

“This head is not one of the 5,398 pieces that were found inside the tomb,” he said.

According to a 1983 law regulating the ownership of antiquities, any ancient artifacts found in the country are considered state property, “with the exception of antiquities whose ownership or possession was already established at the time this law came into effect.”

King Tutankhamun continues to fascinate historians. Last year, archaeologists harnessed sophisticated radar scanning technology to disprove the contentious theory that secret rooms are hidden inside King Tutankhamun’s burial chamber.

KING TUTANKHAMUN BOMBSHELL? MYSTERIOUS PHARAOH MAY HAVE BEEN A BOY SOLDIER

The possibility of previously undiscovered chambers in the boy king’s tomb had generated massive interest around the world.

Stunning research has also claimed that Tutankhamun may have been a boy soldier, challenging the theory that the King was a weak and sickly youth before his mysterious death at around 18 years of age.

In 2014, a BBC documentary used state-of-the-art technology to perform a ‘virtual autopsy’ on King Tutankhamun’s 3,000-year-old remains. By using 2,000 Computerized Tomography (CT) scans of the pharaoh’s mummified body, scientists created a full-size computer-generated image of Tutankhamun. The virtual autopsy indicated that the boy king suffered from a genetic bone-wasting disease and a club foot, making him unable to walk unaided.

KING TUT TOMB MYSTERY: EXPERTS EXPLAIN STRANGE SPOTS ON BURIAL CHAMBER’S WALLS

Another theory suggests that Tutankhamun died in a chariot crash.

In 2012, scientists confirmed that a dagger found among the treasures in King Tut’s tomb was made with iron from a meteorite.

In a separate project, experts recently explained the strange spots on the walls of King Tut’s burial chamber.

2,600-year-old military castle uncovered in Egypt

An Egyptian archaeological mission has unearthed the ancient remnants of a 2,600-year-old military castle, meaning it dates back nearly three millennia.

The castle was found in the North Sinai province, Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities said in a Facebook post. The government agency said that they were able to find the North-East Corner Tower and the remains of the South-East Corner Tower, as well as the extension of the south wall. The castle was dated to the Psamtik era, which ran from 664 to 610 B.C.

“So far, the excavation works are completed to discover the remains of architectural installations inside the castle,” the Ministry of Antiquities wrote in the post. “This is the historic castle that the mission revealed on its eastern wall in 2008 and was built on the ruins of this castle another castle that has been previously revealed on the site.”

ANCIENT TOMB OF MYSTERIOUS MAN DISCOVERED IN EGYPT

“The mud brick-constructed castle that belonged to the 26th dynasty is the oldest historically,” Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said in the post.

Dr. Nadia Khader, head of the central administration, said that the oldest castle built its walls in a different manner than later castles and had varying heights of the walls, ranging from 7 meters to 17 meters.

“The walls of the older castle were different in its design of the newest castle, where rooms [were] filled with sand,” Khader said in the post. “Pottery and dem were built inside the walls of the fences at regular distances, perhaps the purpose of reducing pressure on the 11 M Castle Wall Body, and maybe these rooms are also used as rainwater banks and are a feature of architecture during the Zionist era. The oldest castle is also likely to be the largest space of the castle previously discovered.”

Archaeologists in Egypt have uncovered an ancient cemetery near the famous Giza pyramids just outside Cairo.

In a Facebook post, Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities said that the discovery was made at the Giza Plateau, where the pyramids are located.

Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said Saturday the cemetery houses burial shafts and tombs of top officials and a fine limestone statue from the Old Kingdom’s Fifth Dynasty (2465-2323 B.C.).

Ashraf Mohi, the head of the Giza Plateau archaeological site, says scientists know that the cemetery had been reused extensively in the Late Period (664-332 B.C.), as archeologists found painted and decorated wooden anthropoid coffins, and wooden and clay funerary masks from that period.

Egypt’s former Minister of Antiquities Dr. Zahi Hawass attended the event where the discovery was announced. The cemetery is located next to another graveyard where pyramid builders were buried, he said.

Ancient tomb of mysterious man discovered in Egypt

Archaeologists recently unearthed a tomb in Egypt that belonged to a mysterious man known as Tjt, dating all the way back to Ancient Egypt.

The tomb was found near Aswan, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities said in a Facebook post. Inside the tomb, archaeologists found parts of a painted wooden coffin, fragments of another coffin that included the “complete text including the name of the owner” and mentions of several Egyptian gods, including Hapi, the god of the annual flooding of the Nile.

“Dr. Ayman Ashmawy head of the Egyptian ancient sector said that the tomb consist[ed] of a stair partly flanked by sculpted blocks leading to the funerary chambers,” the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities wrote in the statement. “The entrance was closed by a stone wall found in the original place that had been erected over the stair.”

DOZENS OF MUMMIES, INCLUDING MOTHER AND CHILD, DISCOVERED IN EGYPTIAN TOMB

In addition to the mysterious Tjt, dozens of other mummies were found in the tomb, including two laying on top of each other, presumed to be a mother and child.

“A round-topped coffin was excavated directly in the rock floor. In the main room lied around 30 mummies, among which some of young children who were deposited in a long lateral niche,” the Egyptian Ministry added in the statement.

It’s believed that the tomb was built between the sixth century B.C. and the fourth century A.D.

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a tomb containing dozens of mummies, including the remains of a mother and child.

The rock-cut tomb was found in the southern city of Aswan. Inside, archaeologists found more than 30 mummies. These include two “superimposed mummies,” which archaeologists believe are likely a mother and child.

In a Facebook post, Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities said that the tomb is from the Greco-Roman period, which began with Alexander the Great in 332 B.C. The statement said archaeologists found artifacts, including decorated masks, vases, coffin fragments and cartonnages — chunks of linen or papyrus glued together.

Within the tomb’s main chamber, archaeologists also found a stretcher made from palm wood and linen strips that would have been used for depositing the bodies. “At the entrance of the room, vessels containing bitumen for mummification, white cartonnage ready to be painted and a lamp have been discovered,” officials explained.

The tomb was discovered near the mausoleum of the Aga Khan, who lobbied for Muslim rights in India and who was buried there after his death in 1957.

Egyptian officials announced a stunning discovery over the weekend: a 4,000-year-old tomb of a dignitary bedazzled in colorful paintings and inscriptions.

Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities unveiled Saturday the ancient resting place of the senior official named “Khuwy,” noting that he served during the reign of King Djedkare, a pharaoh who ruled Egypt during the Fifth Dynasty — from the late 25th century to early 24th century BC. The next day, the Egyptian government released footage that showcased what it called “exceptionally painted” limestone walls.

“The remarkable well-preserved colours on the inscriptions are considered royal colours,” the ministry said in an original video posted online.

Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Enani confirmed to the Egypt Independent that the ancient gravesite in Saqqara, which has a tunneled entrance resembling that of a royal pyramid, was uncovered last month while a team examined Djedkare’s vast collection of pyramids. A team of 52 foreign ambassadors, cultural attachés and popular Egyptian actress Yousra toured the site over the weekend.

Hieroglyphs found in the tomb indicate that Khuwy was a senior administrator who held a high rank in the court of pharaoh Djedkare Isesi. (Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities)

“The L-shaped Khuwy tomb starts with a small corridor heading downwards into an antechamber and from there a larger chamber with painted reliefs depicting the tomb owner seated at an offerings table,” Mohamed Megahed, who led a team of archaeologists in digging up the tomb, told the Egyptian newspaper.

Every inch of the tomb is covered in markings, which archaeologists are carefully studying. So far, the inscriptions have raised questions about Khuwy’s impact on the ancient community as well as his specific relationship with the pharaoh — whose elaborate tomb sits just “a stone’s throw away,” per the ministry.

Since the tomb’s discovery in March, researchers have floated several possibilities that could explain Khuwy’s highly decorated tomb.

Some suggested Khuwy was a close relative of Djedkare, while others said it may have been used to make a political point.

“Others believe this unique design was part of the pharaoh’s reforms of state administration and funeral cults,” the ministry explained in a video.

Khuwy’s mummified remains were found “fragmented into several pieces” but researchers will still be able to use the bones to further examine the makeup of the Egyptian official, which will hopefully uncover secrets related to his role during that time period.

In December 2018, archaeologists in Egypt uncovered another impressive gravesite in the Saqqara pyramid that belonged to a high priest more than 4,000 years ago.

Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, called the burial “one of a kind in the last decades.”

“The color is almost intact even though the tomb is almost 4,400 years old,” Waziri said in a statement at the time.
