Dale Earnhardt Jr. offers prayers for Ryan Newman after Daytona 500 crash

NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. joined countless others worrying about the state of Ryan Newman after he was rushed to the hospital following his scary crash at the Daytona 500 on Monday night.

“Big prayers for Newman,” Earnhardt Jr., one of the sports most beloved stars, tweeted.

Newman is in serious condition, but doctors said his injuries weren’t life-threatening, according to a statement by NASCAR.

For many fans, the fiery wreck triggered frightening memories of the crash that killed his father, Dale Earnhardt, during the final lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001.

“This is what is left of Newman’s car. This is horrifying and giving me Dale Earnhardt Sr vibes. Back when Dale passed, it was hard to watch NASCAR, but I started following Newman and he saved the sport for me,” one user wrote.

Another fan expressed relief following a statement by NASCAR on Newman’s non-life threatening conditions. The user referenced the improved safety measures since Earnhardt’s crash.

NASCAR LEGEND DARRELL WALTRIP RECALLS JOINING TRUMP ON LANDMARK TRIP TO DAYTONA 500

Denny Hamlin won the race, which was the second-closest margin of victory in Daytona 500 history. Hamlin understandably was celebrating after his victory because he seemingly was unaware of Newman’s situation.

“We didn’t know until victory lane,” team owner Joe Gibbs said. “I know that for a lot of us, participating in sports and being in things where there are some risks, in a way, that’s what they get excited about. Racing, we know what can happen, we just dream it doesn’t happen. We are all just praying now for the outcome on this.”

Michael Waltrip, who won the Daytona 500 that saw Earnhardt’s deadly crash, also was seen celebrating after his victory 19 years ago — before that emotion changed to sadness.

“If you have read @MW55’s [Waltrip’s] book, ‘In The Blink of An Eye,’ he celebrated the victory before even knowing the news about Dale Sr.’s wreck, so please do not bash @dennyhamlin right now,” another user wrote.

NBA All-Star Game’s MVP award renamed for Kobe Bryant

As the NBA All-Star Game returned to Chicago this weekend for the first time in more than 30 years, Commissioner Adam Silver announced Saturday that the game’s MVP award would be renamed for late Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

“While (the trophy) has existed for a long time, it never had that particular player association, for example, in the way the Finals MVP is the Bill Russell Trophy,” Silver said. “To all of us, it seemed like the appropriate way to bring honor to him.”

Bryant more than made his mark in the last couple of decades of All-Star Games, from winning the Slam Dunk contest in 1997, to becoming the youngest player to ever play in an All-Star Game when he made his debut in 1998 at age 19, to winning the MVP award a record-tying four times. During his 20-year career, he also played on five NBA championship teams.

“We know that he’s watching over us,” Lakers player LeBron James said on media day Saturday. “It’s our responsibility to just represent the purple and gold not only for him but for all the greats, everybody that’s ever come through the Lake Show. I really don’t want to sit up here and talk about it too much. It’s a very, very sensitive subject, but he’s with us every day.”

It hasn’t yet been three weeks since Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gigi and seven others were killed when a helicopter the basketball star had chartered crashed into a Los Angeles County hillside in thick fog.

Bryant was also announced Friday as one of eight Hall of Fame finalists.

When Team LeBron and Team Giannis (for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo) square off Sunday, the players will wear numbers 24 and 2, which were the uniform numbers of Bryant and his daughter.

“Growing up he was my idol — not just my idol but probably the whole generation’s,” Antetokounmpo said. “For us, [Kobe] was the Michael Jordan of our generation. He was one of those guys that gave back to the game so much, gave back to the players. A lot of people when they’re so great, they don’t do that. There was a quote that said that talent is worthless if you’re not willing to share it, right? And he was one of those guys that was sharing his talent with us. He’s going to be definitely missed.”

Ex-NHL star Jeremy Roenick ‘angry’ he won’t return to NBC after suspension for sex remarks about co-workers

Former NHL player Jeremy Roenick won’t be returning to NBC Sports, a network spokesperson confirmed Wednesday, a little more than a month after he was suspended without pay for making inappropriate comments about his coworkers while on a podcast.

Roenick broke the news himself on Twitter, posting a video titled “What a Joke!!” In the video, he says he was angry and disappointed about NBC’s decision.

“I’m also grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to share my love, my passion and my knowledge of the game with millions of people, millions of fans,” he adds.

JEREMY ROENICK SUSPENDED BY NBC SPORTS OVER SEX-RELATED REMARKS ABOUT CO-WORKERS

He adds that he plans to return to broadcasting at some point, “better and more motivated to bring you the best entertainment and the best that I have for the game of hockey.”

Roenick also thanks the fans who’ve stood by him, saying their support has been “overwhelming.”

Roenick was suspended by the network indefinitely just before Christmas, days after he discussed a vacation to Portugal that he took with his wife and co-broadcaster Kathryn Tappen in which he joked about the idea of the three of them having sex together.

“I play it off like we’re going to bed together every night, the three of us,” he said on the podcast “Spittin’ Chiclets,” about when someone asked about their situation at the resort. “If it really came to fruition, that would really be good, but it’s never going to happen.”

Tappen issued a statement at the time, criticizing Roenick’s comments.

“While Jeremy and I continue to be good friends, what he said was unacceptable, especially among workplace colleagues. I do not condone his comments,” Tappen said.

Roenick later called anchor Patrick Sharp “so beautiful” and said: “I’d have to think about it if he asked me. … I wouldn’t say no right away,” and then seemed to contrast Sharp’s appearance with his and Anson Carter’s.

“It’s good to have a beautiful face that talks well, that knows the game because it’s totally the opposite when me and Anson get on there,” he joked.

Roenick had worked with NBC since 2010 and previously played 20 seasons in the NHL for several teams, including the Chicago BlackhawksPhiladelphia FlyersSan Jose SharksArizona Coyotes and Los Angeles Kings.

NBC said it would have no further comment.

Roenick is just the latest high-profile firing from NBC in the wake of Megyn Kelly who was let go by the network for questioning why blackface is offensive and Matt Lauer who lost his job in 2017 for sexual misconduct.

An incident over the weekend involving two Ohio high school girl basketball players was under investigation, a school district said.

During a game Saturday, a Bellevue High School athlete pulled a girl from Norwalk High School down to the court by the hair. The altercation occurred after a missed 3-pointer by the Bellevue player. It wasn’t clear what sparked the incident.

NEWARK HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL COACH ATTACKED ON VIDEO, ALLEGEDLY BY HIS OWN PLAYERS

The Norwalk coach was irate after the play. None of the referees standing nearby apparently saw it.

“First and foremost, I am concerned with the health of our injured student athlete,” Norwalk superintendent George Fisk told WTOL-TV in an email. “She is a fantastic, hardworking young lady and in no way deserved the aggressive unsportsmanlike action taken against her. I have been in contact with the administration of Bellevue City Schools; they have assured me that appropriate action will be taken upon the conclusion of their investigation. Additionally, it is my hope the Ohio High School Athletic Association will not remain silent and uninvolved in this situation.”

Bellevue superintendent Kim Schubert told the station Tuesday that there was disciplinary action, but didn’t address it specifically.

WILD BRAWL BREAKS OUT AT END OF ARIZONA HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME: ‘IT WAS UGLY’

“Since viewing the video on Saturday, with the knowledge that no foul was called during the game, we quickly came to the conclusion that it would be our obligation to address the incident with disciplinary action and we have done so,” Schubert said. “I hope that this clarification will provide a conclusion to this situation leaving no doubt that the situation was immediately addressed. Our priority is the health and safety of all student athletes, including athletes at opposing schools and our own athletes.”

Family members of the Norwalk athlete told WTOL-TV that she was recovering and still being evaluated.

The Ohio State High School Athletic Association said officials reviewed the video and would allow Bellevue first crack at the discipline.

Vladimir Putin enjoys a drink during hockey match with Belarus’ president

Vladimir Putin has hit the ice hockey rink again – this time, with a captain’s “C” emblazoned on his jersey.

The Russian leader played an exhibition game Friday in Sochi with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko during a break in economic talks between the two former Soviet countries.

Putin made headlines last year for scoring eight goals in a game and falling onto the ice while waving to fans.

In this contest though, he appeared more relaxed, as one photograph shows the strongman holding a coffee cup while sitting on the bench. Lukashenko, next to him and with no “C” on his jersey, appears to be grooming his mustache.

Both leaders long have practiced the sport, and played several times together in recent years.

The economic talks come after Lukashenko accused the Kremlin of flouting Russian commitments for energy supplies while trying to strong-arm him into a closer alliance. Some in Belarus fear that the Russian leader could be eyeing a full merger of the two nations in order to extend his rule.

The Kremlin has argued that Belarus, which relies on Russia for most of its energy needs, should accept greater economic integration if it wants to continue receiving Russian resources at subsidized prices.

CBS’ ‘The Talk’ weighs in on Gayle King’s beef with network over Kobe Bryant coverage

The hosts of the CBS daytime talk show “The Talk” weighed in on the controversy between the network and “CBS This Morning” co-anchor Gayle King after she blasted the network for distributing an “out-of-context” clip that enraged fans of late NBA legend Kobe Bryant — and she plans to have a “very intense” conversation with CBS honchos.

“The Talk,” which is CBS’ version of “The View”, kicked off the show on Thursday addressing the dustup. Sharon Osbourne began by expressing her frustration with being taken out of context, lamenting how you “do a whole conversation” and how they “don’t take the beginning” or “the end,” which she said happens to everyone.

“But Gayle’s a journalist and she knows how it is. … It was great and it was a well-rounded interview, but she knows better than anyone people want to get ratings and this network is no different than any other network, so you have to do what you have to do to draw the viewers in,” Osbourne explained. “It’s a business. It’s not friendship, it’s business. … She doesn’t have to apologize for anything. She’s a journalist. And if she wants to be a sweet interviewer, then she should be at this table. She doesn’t have to apologize for during her job.”

Marie Osmond agreed with Osbourne, saying, “It’s the headline” and networks are “always going to go for the sensational.”

“Every one of you — it doesn’t matter if you’re a celebrity being interviewed, people at home as well — we all go through those things where we’re misquoted or they’ll take something from a conversation and twist it a little bit. … I agree with that. I think that she knows that they’re going to advertise with that,” Osmond said.

Sheryl Underwood called King a “friend” and a “mentor,” but told her co-hosts she understands “people’s feelings” and acknowledged that “we work for a network.”

King recently interviewed WNBA icon Lisa Leslie about her relationship with Bryant and a clip of a particular question about a 2003 rape accusation went viral – and the CBS News star is angry her network isolated the query on social media.

VANESSA BRYANT BREAKS SOCIAL MEDIA SILENCE WITH PHOTO OF KOBE, DAUGHTER GIANNA

“I’ve been up reading the comments about the interview I did with Lisa Leslie about Kobe Bryant, and I know that if I had only seen the clip that you saw, I’d be extremely angry with me too,” King said in an Instagram video. “I am mortified. I am embarrassed and I am very angry.”

“Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview, totally taken out of context, and when you see it that way, it’s very jarring. It’s jarring to me. I didn’t even know anything about it. I started getting calls. … I didn’t know what people were talking about,” King said.

VANESSA BRYANT BREAKS SOCIAL MEDIA SILENCE WITH PHOTO OF KOBE, DAUGHTER GIANNA

King asked Leslie if Bryant’s legacy is complicated by the allegation, and she was quickly vilified over the question that many critics deemed wildly inappropriate when “CBS This Morning” tweeted the clip.

The CBS News anchor said she was advised to ignore the criticism but plans to take a different approach.

“That’s not good enough for me because I really want people to understand what happened here and how I’m feeling about it,” King said. “I reached out to Lisa because I know that she’s a longtime friend of Kobe’s to talk about his legacy and their friendship. We have a really wide-ranging interview, talked about many things, his career, his passion, his sense of humor.”

King added that they did talk about “that court case” because she wanted Leslie’s thoughts on it “as a friend who knew him well.” King said it was very powerful when Leslie looked her in the eye and said it’s time for the media to move on from the narrative.

“During the course of the interview, I asked follow-up questions because I wanted to make sure that her position and perspective were very clear,” King said. “When she said, ‘It’s time to leave it alone,’ I thought that was powerful and insisted that it be in the interview because I thought it put a nice button on that part of the conversation.”

King said she received a “great reaction” when the interview aired but CBS set her up for backlash when it chose what portion to share on social media.

“For the network to take the most salacious part, when taken out of context and put it up online for people who didn’t see the whole interview is very upsetting to me and that’s something I’m going to have to deal with, with them,” King said. ‘There will be a very intense discussion about that.”

The “CBS This Morning” co-anchor said the “last thing” she want to do at this sensitive time is to disparage Bryant.

“I hope people understand that,” she said. “That’s why I’m speaking to you directly.”

CBS News did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others died in a helicopter crash last week. He was 41.

President Trump late Sunday caught flack on Twitter after he mistakenly congratulated the “Great State of Kansas” after the Kansas City Chiefs, whose home field is Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., won the Super Bowl LIV.

That tweet was quickly deleted and replaced with a corrected one.

“Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on a great game and a fantastic comeback under immense pressure,” the corrected tweet reads. “We are proud of you and the Great State of Missouri. You are true Champions!”

In an exclusive interview on “Sunday Morning Futures,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell talked about “the big money” surrounding Super Bowl LIV telling host Maria Bartiromo that the game becomes “bigger and bigger every year and it becomes more complicated because of that.”

“But, that’s also the fun of it because more people share in it,” he continued. “More people have an opportunity to be part of the Super Bowl, whether you’re here in Miami or whether you’re home at a Super Bowl party. That is what we love. We love engaging our fans.”

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will go head to head Sunday for the NFL championship in Miami Gardens, Fla. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. ET, with coverage beginning at 2 p.m. ET on Fox.

Both teams were among the top seeds in the NFL Playoffs and won their conference championship games decisively.

SUPER BOWL LIV TIME, DATE AND EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE GAME

The NFL celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019, with last year’s Super Bowl in Atlanta marking the beginning of the league’s “NFL 100” initiatives, events and programs.

“We’re proud of our 100-year anniversary. It has been a wonderful celebration for us so that’s great, but the event is more than a football game now,” Goodell said.

“It’s something really special that people look forward to, plan around and it’s become essentially its own holiday.”

During the exclusive interview, Goodell also talked about the collective bargaining agreement with players as well as the renewals of contracts with media partners.

When Bartiromo mentioned contracts with broadcast and digital partners expiring after the 2022 season and asked how distribution might change, Goodell answered, “We love to be available on the broadest medium.”

“That’s why our network partners are important to us, but we’ve supplemented that by bringing in other opportunities to reach fans that may not be watching on network television, they may not be watching a full game, they may be watching highlights,” he continued.

“So social, over the top, digital transmission of our broadcasts are really important to us and so we make our games available on all those platforms.”

“We make it easy for people to engage because we want the broadest number of people to watch and to engage and to share in that,” he added.

Goodell also told Bartiromo “our discussions are always ongoing.”

He elaborated by saying, “I wouldn’t say we’re in formal negotiations, but we always have discussions.

“We are very open to changing packages, we’re very open to changing partners, we’re open to do the best thing we can for our fans and for the league overall for the long term,” he added.

As it pertains to the collective bargaining agreement, Goodell acknowledged that the negotiation can always be challenging, “But it’s also the opportunity.”

“Because when people really put their focus on, OK here are the challenges, now let’s work to try to find solutions, our players have been extraordinary in looking at that and coming up with solutions and saying what about if we tried this? It actually leads to really terrific solutions when two parties can come together and say, ‘Here’s a great outcome,’” he explained.

The Chiefs are appearing in the Super Bowl for the first time since 1970, when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV. San Francisco has won five Super Bowls, but has not lifted the Lombardi trophy since 1995. Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to their most recent Super Bowl appearance in 2013, but San Francisco fell 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII.

Goodell also told Bartiromo about measures the NFL is implementing to make the game safer, saying, “there are things that we’ve been working on for years.”

“We all want to make sure that the game is as safe as possible for our players,” Goodell said, adding that that includes answering questions like, “How do we train them? How do we take techniques out of the game? How do we take drills out of the game?”

He added, “We’re improving on the equipment. We have six new helmets being introduced this year. All of that will raise, I think, the health and safety of our players.”

It’s a common sight in the waning moments of a tense and competitive sporting event – fans in the crowd on the edge of their seats or standing on their feet, hands clasped, eyes closed or gazing upward to the sky, presumably in prayer for their team to win the big game.

But should we really be petitioning the Creator of the universe for a championship banner or trophy?

My short answer is “no” – asking for divine intervention in an earthly sports match-up is a misapplication of prayer.

It would seem to me that at the heart of the answer to that question are our priorities and belief in how God’s economy intersects with ours.

I love sports from football to baseball and golf to basketball. In fact, I’ve been both a spectator and a competitor, and it’s been a highly enjoyable aspect of my life. Early in my high school years, I had dreams to play NCAA division one football and envisioned myself quarterbacking one day in the National Football League.

So, I’m no sports snob, and I root heartily for my teams, especially the Denver Broncos and baseball’s Colorado Rockies.

I hope they win – but I don’t pray they win. There’s a difference.

In this wonderous age of miraculous connectivity, prayer is the original and best form of wireless communication.

Prayer is a magnificent privilege for a Christian. In its best form, it’s a one-on-one conversation, like sitting down with a loved one and shutting out all the distractions of the world for an intimate and heartfelt exchange.

But it’s not just any conversation. It’s an audience with the most powerful and wisest Force in all the world.

OK, so a critic may ask what’s the harm just asking for a win? I mean, if God cares about all the souls on the field or the court, He’s obviously paying attention and could intervene on our behalf, right?

More from Opinion

That’s where I think we might be missing the whole idea of prayer. God is not a celestial butler granting our every wish and whim. He’s a loving Heavenly Father who has put each of us here with a purpose – to love Him and love others – not indulge ourselves.

So prayer is our privilege to engage with Him on behalf of others, particularly those who are hurting.

Speaking very personally, my life almost always goes better when I’m praying – not so much for myself or my team – but for other people.

I love to pray for my wife, Jean, and our boys, Trent and Troy. I pray for the many children who have passed through our house during their time in foster care. I sometimes lie awake wondering how they are and what came of their lives, so chaotic and by no fault of their own.

I pray for our elected leaders – for our president and representatives on both sides of the aisle.

I pray for shalom – for a peace that transcends all the chaos and contention occurring around the globe.

To be completely transparent, though, I have to admit, prayer doesn’t always come easy to me. I’m so easily distracted – a ring or ding on my phone, thoughts of dinner, my to-do-list, a movie, the urge for a nap – or the big game on television.

But I’m heartened by the fact that even Jesus’ disciples fell asleep praying – so there’s hope for me – and for you.

Incidentally, it might sound strange to call prayer a conversation, especially since God has never spoken to me audibly. But it’s really an encounter and a divine one at that. I have “heard” more in my prayer time than in hours of actual conversation with anyone else.

In the end, it’s a shame that there can only be one winner per game when both teams play well. But if they’ve played their best, prayer for victory is a moot point because it’s the thrill of the game itself that draws me in.
