Influencer defends faking broken ankle for flight upgrade

One Australian influencer is putting his best foot forward and defending his decision to fake a broken ankle in hopes of receiving a flight upgrade during a recent trip with Cathay Pacific Airways. Though the man’s stunt was successful, his followers are divided over whether or not the ploy was ethical.

Last week, social media personality Jamie Zhu shared a three-minute video across his various platforms titled “How To Fly Business Class For FREE!” In the clip, Zhu bought a moon boot at Sydney Airport, put it on his right leg and boarded the flight, fooling Cathay Pacific flight attendants with the lie that he had a broken ankle and couldn’t fit in his economy class seat “at all” because of the large boot.

The footage then cut to Zhu giggling in the cushier business class digs. The influencer boldly removed the moon boot and propped up his legs, getting comfortable for the long-haul flight and enjoying the space’s complimentary food, drinks, TV and room to sleep.

SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS PROMPTS CDC TO EXPAND ‘ENHANCED HEALTH SCREENINGS’ TO 2 MORE US AIRPORTS

“In all seriousness guys, I just had an amazing 8 hours of sleep,” Zhu later revealed. Meanwhile, the person filming behind the camera moaned that they only got about “8 minutes” of shut-eye.

Zhu was all smiles when he ultimately walked off the plane, sans boot for the faux injury.

“Thank you, I hope your ankle gets better,” a Cathay Pacific staffer said as he deplaned.

“Oh yeah, I forgot about that” he replied.

Though some of Zhu’s 1.1 million Instagram followers declared that he was a “genius” and “cool” for pulling off the trick, others on YouTube were more critical.

Some blasted Zhu’s actions as “reprehensible” and agreed that the airline should blacklist him or charge him for the fraudulent upgrade.

“Shame on you! My Daughter is a flight attendant and you are taking advantage of their good will to try and help those in need,” one said.

“Loser. I spent weeks in a boot for surgery. Disabilities are not something to prank about!!!” another exclaimed.

In response, Zhu told Insider that the majority of his followers thought the upgrade “prank” was “cheeky” and that he isn’t letting the critics bring him down.

“I have had a mixed response but most of my followers loved it and thought it was a cheeky, clever, and lighthearted prank to play,” he said in an interview published Tuesday.

“I would say to these [crtitics] that I’m sure we have all tried to find a way to get something for free or for a discount and in this video I have done nothing but that,” Zhu continued. “At the end of the day, my intentions for my videos are to make fun, lighthearted, and entertaining content and the video really showcased Cathay Pacific’s high standard of customer service on their flights.”

Furthermore, the influencer said the experiment was inspired by a real-life injury.

“I once broke my ankle back in high school from soccer and at the time was getting all this ‘special treatment’ from everyone, so I decided to put that theory to the test in the form of a flight!” he said.

Neither Zhu nor a spokesperson for Cathay Pacific Airways were immediately available to offer further comment.

Arizona mother of 2 vacationing in Belize vanishes from small island, is ‘feared no longer alive,’ family says

An American mother of two vacationing in Belize disappeared over the weekend while she and her boyfriend camped on an island less than an acre in size, officials said Wednesday.

Alison MacKenzie, 43, was last seen Friday evening after she arrived on the small island of Rendezvous Caye as apart of a three-day tour with a group of 15 people and 3 crew members, said the company running the expedition, Raggamuffin Tours Limited, in a statement.

MacKenzie’s mother confirmed her disappearance in a Facebook post, adding that the family is concerned over the inconsistencies in the information they have received.

“We are working with the Belize Police, the American Embassy, and the tour company owner. We have received 3 different stories about what happened that morning. None of them consistent with the others. We are getting nowhere finding out where she is,” Cherie MacKenzie wrote.

She said the family fears she is “no longer alive” considering how much time has passed since the last time she was seen on the island.

“I want her home with us, no matter how she may be found. I want my daughter back,” she added.

The State Department confirmed to Fox News in an email Wednesday that they are aware of MacKenzie’s disappearance and are working with local authorities as they continue their search.

“The welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad is one of the highest priorities of the Department of State,” the statement read. “Whenever a U.S. citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts, and we share information with their family however we can. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment at this time.”

Raggamuffin Tours has also said that it is fully cooperating with police in Belize as they investigate MacKenzie’s disappearance.

Have you ever wanted to live off the grid on a picturesque island full of Irish heritage? Would you like to be one of the only people living on the island? Are you okay with foregoing electricity and hot showers and wifi?

The Great Blasket Island’s ad is for two people to manage the island’s three tourist cottages and one coffee shop from April through October. It received hundreds of responses from all over the world, The Independent reported.

The four-mile-long island off Ireland’s southwest coast is accessible only by boat and was mostly abandoned in 1953 due to the dwindling population and harsh winters. It is now largely state-owned, according to The Independent and The Guardian.

5 OF THE WORLD’S ‘MOST CURSED’ PLACES, EXPLAINED

“It’s intense and tough but it’s a very unique position,” Alice Hayes, who posted the ad, told Ireland’s RTE. “It’s back to basics – fires, candles, stoves, wildlife and nature.”

Hayes said there is “a little wind turbine that generates enough electricity to charge one device, so you are not completely cut off.” That’s right, one device for an entire island.

The couple who managed the island last year, Lesley Kehoe and Gordon Bond, generated buzz for Great Blasket by documenting their experience on social media, RTE reported.

Omar, Tlaib balk after report of Trump administration plan to expand travel ban: ‘Straight up racism!’

Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., expressed outrage Friday after a report said the Trump administration was considering an expansion of the nation’s travel ban to cover more countries.

In a statement, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley neither confirmed nor denied the expansion report but defended the existing policy.

“The Travel Ban has been very successful in protecting our Country and raising the security baseline around the world,” Gidley said. “While there are no new announcements at this time, common-sense and national security both dictate that if a country wants to fully participate in U.S. immigration programs, they should also comply with all security and counter-terrorism measures — because we do not want to import terrorism or any other national security threat into the United States.”

Nevertheless, Omar and Tlaib both addressed the travel ban Friday.

“What do 5 out of 7 of these countries have in common? They are Muslim-majority countries the President already tried to ban,” Omar tweeted.

It wasn’t clear whether she was referring to the currently banned countries or a potential list.

“We need to pass the #NoBanAct immediately to stop this madness,” she added.

Tlaib called the ban “Straight up racism!”

OMAR RESPONDS AFTER TEXAS USES TRUMP EXECUTIVE ORDER TO OPT OUT OF REFUGEE PROGRAM

“No more waiting,” she tweeted. “Too many Muslims have been intentionally targeted, discriminated against, separated from their families and denied opportunities solely based on their faith.”

The administration’s travel ban, which has been through several rounds of litigation and iterations, currently includes seven countries (with certain exceptions) not allowed to fly to the United States: Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela and North Korea.

Some confusion ensued at airports across the country in 2017 — about who was allowed in and who wasn’t — after President Trump signed the original travel ban into law through an executive order just seven days after taking office. Massive protests added to the disorder.

Trump’s first version of the travel ban — dubbed by critics as “the Muslim ban” because it called for a 90-day travel from Muslim-majority countries Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen — proposed blocking refugee admissions for 120 days and suspended travel from Syria and was immediately blocked by the courts.

A watered-down version was eventually upheld by the Supreme Court in a 5-4 vote.

The list of banned countries could potentially be doubled from seven to 14, two people familiar with the proposal told the Associated Press. Iraq, Sudan and Chad could be on the list, a different person said.

The added countries would most likely be Muslim-majority – a point of controversy as Trump openly floated the possibility of banning all Muslims from entering the U.S. while running for president.

The expanded ban would reportedly be part of a hyper-focus on immigration for the 2020 election.

A document outlining the plan has been circulating around the West Wing, but the listed countries have been blacked out.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., called the proposal “xenophobic.”

“An expanded Muslim Ban will worsen our relationships with countries around the world. It won’t do anything to make our country safer. It will harm refugees, alienate our allies and give extremists propaganda for recruitment,” she said.

Trump criticized the Justice Department in 2017 for making changes to the original ban, tweeting they “should have stayed with the original Travel Ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted to S.C.”

Iranian authorities have invited Boeing to take part in the investigation into a Ukrainian jetliner that crashed in Tehran killing all 176 people on board, Iran’s state-run media reported.

PENTAGON OFFICIALS BELIEVE MISSILE TOOK DOWN PLANE

Abbas Mousavi, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, told IRNA news agency Friday that Iran “has invited both Ukraine and the Boeing company to participate in the investigations.”

The report came after the Pentagon and other Western leaders Thursday said intelligence suggested the Ukrainian International Airlines flight was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile. The crash happened hours after Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles targeting two military bases housing American and coalition troops.

Iran previously said Thursday it would not hand over the plane’s black box to Boeing, which is an American company, or U.S. authorities for analysis.

“We will not give the black box to the manufacturer and the Americans,” Ali Abedzadeh, the head of the Civil Aviation Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, said, according to BBC News.

Iranian officials had blamed technical problems with the Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Boeing did not immediately respond to an after-hours email and call from Fox News about the report.

‘World’s Hottest Grandma’ raising money for Australian wildfire relief: ‘It’s the least I can do’

The “world’s hottest grandmother‘” is allegedly stripping down for a critical cause as she fundraises for the national firefighting effort in her home country, Australia, where dangerous wildfires are causing chaos.

On Wednesday, Gina Stewart, 49, shared a sizzling offer with her 14,300 followers on Instagram. For every $10 donation, the Gold Coast resident pledged to send a free link for “premium content” – reportedly featuring sexy snapshots – through the website Only Fans, The Sun reports. The funds will benefit various firefighting organizations and charities including the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, the Salvation Army and WWF Australia, Stewart said.

“You’re absolutely gorgeous. I’m very sorry that your country is on fire,” one user commented.

“Great smile, who would not want to help you [?]” another agreed.

The proud grandma, meanwhile, said she’s simply doing her part to help out.

“It’s the least I can do,” Stewart said of her crusade, per The Sun. “My brother is an actor down in Sydney, he’s been working every day as a volunteer firefighter. His house has been really close to the firefront — so he’s literally fighting for his community.”

In an Instagram update posted Thursday, the mother of four thanked fans for their continued support and “thousands of dollars” in donations.

“So much love and gratitude to all of you who are helping with your amazing kindness and generous donations. We are making a difference and that’s what it’s all about, mostly to the wildlife charities in the form of thousands of dollars that is pouring in all night and all day as direct donations,” Stewart wrote. “So thank you all kindly from the bottom of my heart, it’s an overwhelming response.”

Stewart, who shot to stardom during the Maxim’s Finest Australia contest in 2018, has previously made headlines for sharing particularly risqué photos on social media.

In a similar fundraising effort for the Australian wildfires, one outspoken Instagram model claims that the social platform recently shut down her account after she decided to sell naked photos of herself for the cause.

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service urged the communities of Nowra, Narooma and Batemans Bay, located south of Sydney, to evacuate over fears that northwesterly winds were likely to once again drive blazes toward the coast. In neighboring Victoria state, fire-threatened populations were urged to act quickly on evacuation warnings.

“If you can get out, you should get out,” Andrew Crisp, Victoria’s emergency management commissioner, told reporters. “Because tomorrow is going to be a dangerous and dynamic day.”

Chicago airports install ‘Cannabis Amnesty Boxes’ for passengers to dispose of marijuana before flights

Puff, puff, toss.

Two of Chicago’s airports, O’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport, have installed “Cannabis Amnesty Boxes” for passengers to dispose of their recreational marijuana before boarding their flights.

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE BANS ‘OFFENSIVE’ CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES

The boxes, which were installed last week to coincide with the Jan. 1 legalization of weed in the state, are located near TSA checkpoints.

Though TSA and police are not targeting passengers carrying marijuana – it is legal to have the substance in the state’s airports – it is still illegal to fly with any drug, as airspace is regulated by the federal government and the drug is still illegal under federal law.

TSA does not actively search for “marijuana or cannabis-infused products” at security checkpoints, but the agents are “obligated to report the discovery of any drugs or substances that are illegal under federal law,” a spokesperson for the TSA told Fox News. Local police then determine what further action to take, if any.

The boxes are maintained by the Chicago Department of Aviation and the police, Chicago Tribune reported. Police officers will regularly empty the boxes and file reports for items found in the boxes, as well as dispose of surrendered materials inside.

The two Chicago airports are not the first to install cannabis disposal boxes, as both McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and Colorado Springs Airport in Colorado have also installed amnesty boxes for passengers who need to surrender their marijuana before flights.

A Ukrainian airplane carrying 180 people — including passengers and crew — crashed Wednesday morning shortly after takeoff near the airport in Tehran, according to Iranian state-run television.

There was no immediate information about casualties, according to The Associated Press. The state TV report said the plane had taken off from the Imam Khomeini International Airport. Mechanical issues were blamed. Social media posts suggested the plane was en route to Kyiv.

An investigation team was at the site of the crash in southwestern outskirts of Tehran, civil aviation spokesman Reza Jafarzadeh said.

The crash came hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack targeting two bases in Iraq housing U.S. forces in retaliation for the killing of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
