Wanted Tennessee inmate was caught after being spotted rifling through strangers’ refrigerator

A Tennessee convict who sparked a five-day manhunt following his prison escape and alleged murder of a correctional administrator last week was captured after home surveillance video caught him rifling through a married couple’s refrigerator at their home, investigators and the pair said Sunday.

Curtis Watson surrendered without incident several hours after law enforcement received a tip about his whereabouts in the West Tennessee town of Henning. Hundreds of law enforcement personnel converged near a soybean field where they took a disheveled Watson wearing camouflage overalls into custody after a ground and air search, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David Rausch said at a Sunday news conference.

“The pressure they put on Watson while he was on the run was absolutely critical,” Rausch said.

The field was located 10 miles from the West Tennessee State Penitentiary where Watson made his Aug. 7 escape.

Harvey Taylor said he and his wife Ann were asleep in their home around 3:30 a.m. when they were awakened by their outdoor security alarm. When they looked at the video system, they spotted a man going through their refrigerator.

They called police after recognizing Watson from news coverage surrounding his escape.

“Once he closed the left side of the refrigerator door, my wife could his face… she said, ‘That’s him, that’s him,’ Taylor said. Watson was captured around 11 a.m.

An intense search for the 44-year-old started after he escaped from prison during his daily lawn-mowing detail. He had been serving a 15-year sentence for aggravated kidnapping. He illegally confined his wife while using an aluminum baseball bat in July 2012, court documents showed. His sentence began in 2013 and was set to expire in 2025, officials said.

Around 11 a.m. on the morning of Watson’s escape, prison officials said they realized employee Debra Johnson was missing after she didn’t report to work.

Johnson, 64, was found dead soon afterward in her home on the prison grounds. Investigators said she was sexually assaulted and strangled to death. Correctional officers reported they saw Watson riding a golf cart at Johnson’s house the morning she died.

Johnson worked for the Tennessee Department of Corrections (TDOC) for 38 years in various roles that included correctional sergeant, deputy warden and warden. She was the first TDOC employee to be killed in 15 years, The Commercial Appeal in Memphis reported.

Following his arrest, Watson was taken to a hospital, officials said. He had mosquito bites and his feet were in bad shape, but had no serious injuries.

“He was obviously weathered from his time in the outside,” Rausch said.

Watson’s daughter, Harley Pole, thanked law enforcement in a statement issued shortly after her father was captured.

“The family of Curtis Watson would like to extend their deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to the family of Ms Debra Johnson,” Pole said.

Watson faced new charges of first-degree murder, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated burglary and escaping from prison. Prosecutors were set to determine whether they’d seek the death penalty, Lauderdale County District Attorney Mark Davidson said.

“I can assure you that our office will be resolved to see that he is put back where he can never escape again and harm anybody in our communities,” Davidson added.

An arraignment is expected later this week.

The search for a Tennessee convict who allegedly sexually assaulted then murdered a corrections employee before escaping entered its fifth day Sunday, as authorities warn the fugitive is “extremely dangerous.”

Curtis Watson, a 44-year-old inmate at the West Tennessee State Penitentiary, was spotted in Henning, Tenn., over the weekend after escaping custody Wednesday. He had been released from the facility at 7 a.m. on a work detail for his daily lawn-mowing duties.

MANHUNT FOR ESCAPED TENNESSEE INMATE INTENSIFIES AS STATE ISSUES RARE BLUE ALERT

Around 11 a.m., prison officials realized employee Debra Johnson was missing after she didn’t report to work, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said. Hours earlier, around 8:10 a.m., 64-year-old Johnson — an administrator who lived in a home on prison grounds — was known to be alive, as she had made a phone call.

Her body was discovered by coworkers shortly after they discovered she was missing. Investigators said she was sexually assaulted and had been strangled to death.

Correctional officers saw Watson riding a golf cart at Johnson’s house around 8:30 a.m. It was between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., according to officials, that the inmate “took a tractor and reflective vest from the prison and drove away.”

Since his escape, authorities have been searching for Watson, who they described as “extremely dangerous.”

“If you spot Curtis Watson do not approach him,” authorities said, warning to call 911.

Investigators said they’ve received nearly 400 tips related to Watson’s disappearance, and on early Sunday confirmed he was seen in Henning, Tenn., near the state prison facility.

“He has changed his clothing as can be seen in the photos provided by a resident who notified authorities that they’d spotted him on their property. Residents in the area should be ALERT and VIGILANT,” the state Department of Correction tweeted.

A reward of $57,000 was offered for information leading to Watson’s capture and conviction. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Manhunt for Tennessee inmate wanted in correctional officer murder, cops warn he’s ‘extremely dangerous’

A manhunt for an “extremely dangerous” escaped Tennessee inmate wanted as a person of interest in the death of a corrections employee continued Thursday as officials warned the public to stay vigilant in light of the possibility Curtis Ray Watson altered his appearance.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released several images of Watson, 44, Thursday, fearing he may have altered his image since breaking out from the West Tennessee State Penitentiary on Wednesday.

“If you spot Curtis Watson do not approach him. Call 911. He is considered to be dangerous,” TBI Director David Rausch told reporters at a press conference Wednesday night.

According to TBI Commissioner Tony Parker, officials first learned of Watson’s disappearance Wednesday morning after discovering the body of correctional administrator Debra Johnson.

Johnson, 64, was found dead in her home at around 11:30 a.m. Parker said the home was one of several residences on the prison’s property where staff members live.

The prison was placed on lockdown and an official count was conducted. It was at this point that Watson, who was described as a minimum custody inmate that worked as a farm laborer, was unaccounted for.

Officials contacted the TBI and local authorities and a manhunt was initiated.

“She led a distinguished career over 38 years of service to the people of this great state,” Parker said of Johnson. “I want to extend my condolences to the family of Ms. johnson who was the victim of this homicide.”

Authorities have since named Watson a “person of interest” in Wednesday’s homicide.

Rausch urged residents in the area to remain “vigilant” and contact authorities if they notice anything suspicious.

“If you spot Curtis Watson do not approach him. Call 911. He is considered to be dangerous.”

Police shared several images of Watson over the years, fearing he may have altered his appearance. They also posted several pictures of tattoos that Watson has which would be more identifiable.

Rausch said Watson was added to the TBI’s Most Wanted list but would not say if the suspect was armed, adding that Watson fled the area in a tractor that was found just over a mile from the crime scene.

Authorities could not say if the victim had any contact with Watson prior to her death.

Watson was serving a 15-year sentence for an aggravated kidnapping conviction in 2013. He was set to be released in 2025. He had previously been jailed for a child abuse conviction and was released in  2011.

Canada murder suspects could already be 1,800 miles from slayings, described as ‘best friends’ who were ‘out on adventure’

Two young men who have spurred a nationwide manhunt in Canada after the killings of an American woman, her Australian boyfriend, and a third unidentified man are known as lifelong friends, according to the father of one of the now-suspects.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police made the shocking announcement during a news conference Tuesday that Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, from Port Alberni, British Columbia, are the main suspects in the slayings of  23-year-old Australian Lucas Fowler, and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese, 24, who were discovered shot to death on July 15 along the side of the Alaska Highway near Liard Hot Springs, British Columbia.

“We’re asking the public, if you spot Bryer or Kam, consider them dangerous,” RCMP Sgt. Janelle Shoihet told reporters.

Shoihet said Tuesday that McLeod and Schmegelsky left British Columbia and have been traveling in northern Saskatchewan in a grey 2011 Toyota Rav 4.  Authorities released surveillance photos of the two in Saskatchewan.

But later in the day, police said the duo may be further east in Manitoba after a reported sighting in the remote northern town of Gillam.

The possible spotting in the Gillam area is roughly 1,800 miles from the region where the killings took place in British ColumbiaOfficials have said the two young men may also have also changed their appearances and be driving another vehicle.

“We have reasons to believe they were recently in the Gillam area,” RCMP Manitoba said on Twitter. “If you spot them – take no actions – do not approach – call 911 or your local police immediately.”

Gilliam Mayor Dwayne Forman told CTV News the alert prompted many of the town’s residents to stay indoors.

“The streets are very quiet right now,” he said Tuesday night.

McLeod and Schmegelsky, who are both from Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, were initially listed as missing persons after their burning truck was discovered July 19. While authorities were investigating the burning truck Friday, they discovered a body at a nearby highway pullout. RCMP said that officials were still working to identify the male remains.

Authorities had originally said the pair were traveling to Whitehorse in the Yukon to look for work and had not been in contact with their families for the past few days, police said.

Bryer Schmegelsky’s father, Alan, told the Victoria Times Colonist on Tuesday he discovered his son was a suspect in the killings after a reporter texted him.

Schmegelsky said he’s been trying to contact his son since he was reported missing, but not heard anything. The 18-year-old doesn’t have a driver’s license and while he was interested in airsoft guns, Alan Schmegelsky told the Colonist he didn’t think his son ever fired a real gun.

“I’m in disbelief,” he told the paper. “I didn’t see any signs of violence.”

At a news conference on Monday before his son was named a suspect, Alan Schmegelsky said his son and McLeod were disappointed with the Walmart gig, their first jobs, and they decided to head off in search of something better up north, CBC News reported.

“They’re just kids on an adventure. They’re good boys,” he said at the time.

The RCMP has said that 23-year-old Australian Lucas Fowler, and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese, 24, were shot to death before their bodies were discovered on the side of the Alaska Highway near Liard Hot Springs on July 15. The couple is believed to have been killed that day or the day prior.

On Monday, authorities released surveillance video of the couple at a gas station in Fort Nelson on July 13, which shows the pair arriving in the van and staying at the facility for about 17 minutes before leaving.

Just a few days after the bodies of a young couple were discovered on the side of a highway in northern British Columbia, young men’s burning truck and a body were discovered roughly 292 miles away.

Connecticut cops search reservoir in Jennifer Dulos investigation

Police searching for missing Connecticut mother of five Jennifer Dulos scoured a reservoir near the home of her estranged husband Wednesday.

New Canaan police said in a statement that members of the Connecticut State Police K-9 unit searched the property of the Metropolitan District Commission reservoir in West Hartford “as a part of the ongoing criminal investigation” into Dulos’ disappearance.

MISSING CONNECTICUT MOM JENNIFER DULOS’ FAMILY, FRIENDS, DENY HER CASE IS A ‘GONE GIRL’ DISAPPEARANCE

The statement did not say what investigators were searching for or what, if anything, they found. The Hartford Courant reported that the western edge of the reservoir is just a half-mile away from Fotis Dulos’ residence in Farmington.

Jennifer Dulos has not been seen since May 24, when she dropped off her children at school in New Canann. Fotis Dulos has denied having anything to do with his wife’s disappearance, a claim he repeated in an interview that aired Tuesday night.

FOTIS DULOS MAINTAINS INNOCENCE IN FIRST SIT-DOWN INTERVIEW SINCE WIFE’S DISAPPEARANCE

Fotis Dulos told WNBC-TV that while he and Jennifer had their differences during their divorce and child custody case, he wished no harm upon her.

“Statistically when this [a spouse disappearance]  happens,” Dulos said, “90 or 95 percent [of the time] it’s the spouse.”

Dulos claimed he belongs “in the 5 or 10 percent” of spouses who are innocent.

Fotis Dulos also put out a statement Tuesday night asking the public to “keep my children and Jennifer in your thoughts.”

“My children are the center of my world. I worry about them and Jennifer, and I would tell them that I know it is hard now but everything IS going to be alright [sic] eventually,” he said. “I understand the public’s perception of me as a monster given the little they know about the case, but I trust the system and the process and ask the public to do the same.”

SISTER OF JENNIFER DULOS’ ESTRANGED HUSBAND SAYS HE’S ‘NOT THE PERSON THEY SAY HE IS’

Fotis Dulos’ sister told Fox 61 many relatives and friends don’t believe Fotis Dulos was capable of harming his wife.

Rena Dulos, who lives in Greece, described her brother as someone who wanted to “have a big family under his paternal ‘wings'” and also “lovingly spontaneous to the core when it comes down to lifting other peoples’ spirits around him.”

Fotis Dulos and his girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, have pleaded not guilty to evidence tampering and hindering prosecution charges. Police allege the couple discarded items containing Jennifer Dulos’ blood in Hartford.

Prosecutors have consistently hinted more charges were likely, but have yet to file any other counts. Fotis Dulos is next scheduled to appear in court Aug. 2.

Fotis and Jennifer Dulos’ five children, who are aged 8 to 13 and include two sets of twins, have been staying with Jennifer Dulos’ mother, Gloria Farber, in New York City. Both Farber and Fotis Dulos are seeking custody.

Authorities in North Carolina are looking for a suspect who walked out of a hospital on Friday night after an 11-year-old struck him in the head with a machete in a foiled home invasion.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that 19-year-old Jataveon Dashawn Hall walked out of UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital “against medical advice” shortly before 8 p.m. Hall had been hospitalized for treatment of a head wound since about 1 p.m., initially at UNC-Hillsborough hospital before being transferred to the Chapel Hill facility due to the severity of his injury.

“Our agency is very concerned about the events in this case,” Chief Deputy Sykes said in a statement Sunday. “Effective immediately, we will institute policy changes necessary to protect the public in situations like this. We expected to be notified prior to Hall’s discharge.”

MACHETE-WIELDING 11-YEAR-OLD FOILS NORTH CAROLINA HOME INVASION

Hall, who is 6 feet tall and weighs 135 pounds, had his head wrapped in a bandage when he walked out of the hospital carrying a cup of water, according to police.

The sheriff’s office said they were notified when the 19-year-old initially arrived at the hospital, but had no legal authority to hold him in custody at the time as he was only a suspect. By that afternoon, police said enough information was established to seek warrants for breaking and entering and assault.

Deputies were then planning to be at the hospital at the time of discharge and take Hall into custody but were told early Saturday morning that the 19-year-old had actually left the night before.

The sheriff’s office said that Hall had told a nurse he needed to leave because “the police were going to be looking for him.”

“When Hall left the hospital Friday evening against medical advice, we certainly should have been notified. But most concerning of all is that hospital police did not even know Hall had left the premises almost 10 hours prior,” Sykes said. “Indeed, Hall’s absence was only discovered when we placed a phone call to them.”

NYPD OFFICERS’ SUICIDES PROMPT TOP COP TO CITE ‘MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS’

UNC Health Care said in a statement the suspect was not under guard while hospitalized in the department’s emergency department.

“This patient was admitted to the ED, but was in the legal custody of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department which did not place an officer with him,” the organization told The News & Observer. “In similar situations, hospital staff will often alert law enforcement personnel when a suspect patient is discharged, but they remain the legal responsibility of law enforcement.”

The sheriff’s office said that hospital police were notified warrants were issued and were asked to call the department prior to Hall’s discharged.

“The arrangement all of our area law enforcement agencies have with hospital police of ensuring the eventual arrest of a suspect after the suspect receives medical care, has been in place for decades,” Sykes said. “I cannot remember another time when it has failed.”

Authorities said that Hall was among intruders who broke into the home Friday but was chased off when the 11-year-old boy drew blood with the machete. A woman and a second man provided the getaway vehicle for the three intruders and drove away.

The boy’s aunt, Ashley Matthews, told WTVD on Saturday she was outraged by the news that Hall had walked out.

“Who is responsible? Who should have been there watching him? Who should have been there sitting outside the emergency department? Who is responsible for allowing this criminal to walk out of UNC Hospital?” she told the television station. “We want to know who it is, and we want somebody to take responsibility.”

UNC Healthcare said that personnel are working with the sheriff’s office to “offer them assistance in this matter.” Anyone with information about Hall’s whereabouts is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 919-245-2900.

An Illinois man accused of killing his new bride just hours after she married him has been added to the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list, as federal law enforcement officials disclosed Wednesday he may have fled the country.

Arnoldo Jimenez, 37, allegedly stabbed 26-year-old Estrella Carrera multiple times before leaving her in a bathtub to die at her Burbank, Illinois home on May 12, 2012, just hours after the two were wed, the FBI said in a news release.

“He has a criminal past and a history of violence,” said Special Agent Steve Barnard of the FBI’s Chicago field office. “We want to bring him to justice.”

The two were married May 11, 2012 in a city hall ceremony and then were joined by family and friends for a reception. What should have been a night of celebration, however, apparently took a turn for the worse on the way home, when officials believe the couple got into an argument in Jimenez’s black Maserati.

“We believe she was stabbed in the vehicle and then dragged back into the apartment and left bleeding in the bathtub,” Barnard said.

After Carrera didn’t pick up her children — a 2-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter —  family members asked the police to perform a wellness check on May 13, when her body was discovered in the bathtub.

The 26-year-old was found wearing the same dress she’d worn to the wedding reception.

Authorities in California searching for a missing teenage girl who was last seen with two murder suspects located an abandoned vehicle connected to the trio on Friday near the border with Mexico.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Friday on Facebook that an empty white BMW 4-door sedan was found by San Diego Police in San Ysirdo.

The vehicle was the same car that Alora Benitez, 15, was last seen in on Wednesday morning with her 40-year-old mother, Maricela Mercado and a 39-year-old man identified as Roman Cerratos.

A man suspected of using a samurai sword to kill his girlfriend last year at a survivalist bunker loaded with guns and ammo in northwest Washington was found dead in California, officials revealed Tuesday.

The Island County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release posted to Facebook a body pulled from the Feather River in Yuba City, California on April 7, 2018 has been identified as 35-year-old Jacob Gonzales.

The body was initially classified as a “John Doe” until November when investigators shared photos of tattoos on the body that led to tips that initially identified the body as Gonzales’.

Officials were eventually able to send DNA to a lab in California, which made the positive identification. Officials have not revealed a cause of death.

Gonzales had been sought by authorities in connection with the murder of 26-year-old Katherine Cunningham, whose decapitated body was discovered on March 3, 2018, near a survivalist bunker on the rural Camano Island, north of Seattle.

Near the headless corpse, investigators discovered a bunker dug into a hillside containing supplies, guns and ammo. Autopsy findings determined the 26-year-old woman’s cause of death was “homicidal violence with decapitation,” according to the coroner’s office.

“The subsequent investigation revealed that Katherine had been murdered on February 14th or 15th,” the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

Cunningham’s vehicle was found abandoned on Interstate 5 in Yreka, Calif., roughly 560 miles away on Feb. 16 and towed three days later by the California Highway Patrol, before her body was discovered.

“After Katherine was discovered, an attempt to locate was put out on her missing vehicle and the California Highway Patrol notified the Island County Sheriff’s Office that they had the vehicle,” police said. “Deputies from the Island County Sheriff’s Office recovered the vehicle from California and towed it back to Washington where Detectives obtained a search warrant.”

Inside the vehicle, authorities discovered a samurai sword wrapped in a blanket that appeared to match the type of weapon used in the killing. Testing of the sword also found Cunningham’s DNA on the blade and Gonzales’ DNA on the handle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities had been seeking Gonzales since March on a $1 million warrant. He was previously charged with 5 counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and one count of motor vehicle theft.

The sheriff’s office thanked the various agencies and tips from the public that helped with the investigation, and officials thanked the victim’s family.

“We would also like to thank Katherine’s family for their patience and their tireless efforts to keep Katherine in the public’s thoughts,” officials said.
