Kentucky deputies find newborn covered in ants inside van; arrest mother, grandmother

Kentucky deputies say a traffic stop of a trash-filled van led to the discovery of a newborn baby covered in ants.

Doctors treated the 16-day-old baby boy for dehydration and turned him over to social services, according to reports.

The baby was with his mother, Rebeca Fultz, 32, of Livingston, Ky., and his grandmother, Charlotte Simpson, 69, of London, who were both arrested on multiple charges, including criminal abuse, Laurel County Sheriff John Root said.

Root said the deputies who stopped the van and found the newborn noted his breathing was labored breathing, that he was wearing a soiled diaper and that ants were crawling on him.

The van was pulled over Thursday evening in London with no plates. Deputies detained Simpson and Fultz after a check showed they were both wanted on outstanding warrants.

Root said deputies struggled to get Fultz out of the van and didn’t notice the baby right away. He was under a blanket on the floorboard between the two front seats.

“We told them the baby was in there,” Simpson told WKYT from jail. “We were in the shade, and the windows were down. It was living. I mean, why in the world?”

The station also interviewed Fultz behind bars.

New York City police apprehend man wanted in subway pressure cooker scare

Police in New York City have apprehended the man they say caused a mass evacuation during Friday morning’s commute after he allegedly left several pressure cookers throughout a busy Manhattan subway.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot F. Shea shared a tweet Saturday morning of a man caught on surveillance the previous day removing two rice cookers from a shopping cart and placing them inside the Fulton Street subway station in lower Manhattan.

LAS VEGAS SECURITY GUARD ARRESTED FOR PLOT TO BOMB SYNAGOGUE OR LGBTQ BAR

Officials did not identify the individual but confirmed that he had been “located” and that the investigation was on going.

Police swarmed the area at around 7 a.m. Friday after one pressure cooker was located on the mezzanine and another on the platform of a subway station just a few blocks away from the World Trade Center.

Multiple subway lines were partially suspended during the investigation at Fulton Street, and delays continued throughout the morning before police eventually determined that the objects were not explosives.

Authorities did not say what the nature of the man’s intentions were, with one official stopping just short of calling him a “suspect.”

“It is possible that somebody put out a bunch of items in the trash today and this guy picked them up and then discarded them, or it’s possible that this was an intentional act,” the NYPD’s top counterterror official John Miller said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said earlier, however, that the items were placed in the subway “to suggest that they were electronic devices and possible bombs.”

Pressure cookers have recently become the device of choice for several domestic terror plots over the last several years.

Pressure cookers packed with explosives killed three people and injured hundreds when a pair of Islamic extremists detonated them during the Boston Marathon in 2013.

In September 2016, a pressure-cooker bomb went off in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, injuring 30 people.

In 2017, a would-be suicide attacker set off a homemade pipe bomb in an underground passageway at the Times Square subway station during rush hour, seriously injuring himself.

Although the name of the man in question has not been confirmed by police, he was identified as 26-year-old Larry Kenton Griffin of West Virginia by his brother in an interview with the Daily Mail. Griffin’s brother claimed he is “bipolar” and that the incident Friday was a “cry for help.”

Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson arrested on eve of Portland, Ore., protests

The leader of a conservative group was arrested Friday in Portland, Ore., one day before planned protests involving supporters of the far-left Antifa movement and supporters of several conservative groups.

Joey Gibson, leader of Portland-based Patriot Prayer, turned himself in to authorities in connection with an arrest warrant for rioting, stemming from a violent clash in the city on May 1, according to the Associated Press. He was later released after posting bail, with further legal action pending.

In a video posted on Facebook, Gibson accused police of targeting conservative groups for arrests but not members of Antifa, even though masked Antifa supporters have been seen on videos engaging in violence during past protests.

Gibson asserted that authorities were trying to intimidate conservatives who planned to protest Saturday.

“They want you to not show up in Portland, they want to put fear in your hearts,” Gibson said.

GABRIEL NADALES: ANTIFA VIOLENCE FEARED IN PORTLAND SATURDAY — GROUP MUST BE CONDEMNED AND EXPOSED

Gibson, 35, was not connected to the events planned for Saturday but had organized Portland rallies that turned violent in 2017 and 2018, the report said.

Separately, a conservative group called the Oath Keepers has decided it will not participate Saturday, saying it did not believe organizers had done enough to discourage white supremacists from showing up.

Portland authorities have been taking steps intended to minimize the chances that Saturday’s demonstrations repeat the violence of past events. Personnel from more than two-dozen law enforcement agencies – representing local, state and federal government – are involved in trying to maintain order during the demonstrations, the AP reported.

“I’m confident that from a law enforcement perspective, we’re going to have all the tools and the resources and personnel we need,” Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said Friday on Fox News’ “Outnumbered Overtime.”

The mayor, a Democrat, has drawn criticism over the city’s handling of past protests.

In June, conservative writer Andy Ngo was hospitalized after being attacked by Antifa supporters at a Portland demonstration.

On Friday, Ngo told “Fox & Friends” that he feared Saturday’s event “has the potential to be a powder keg.”

Precautions being taken in Portland for Saturday include plans by many downtown businesses to close for the day, as well as the planned closure of the Hawthorne Bridge, which connects eastern Portland to the downtown area, across the Willamette River, OregonLive reported.

The Secret Service arrested a man who was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a knife outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., on Friday.

Officers responded to a reported of a suspicious person and vehicle in the area of the embassy at approximately 7:45 a.m. and saw the suspect was wearing a ballistic vest and had a folding knife in his pocket, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

A police report said the man was “making nonsensical statements” while speaking to officers.

ISRAEL BLOCKS OMAR, TLAIB FROM ENTERING COUNTRY AMID PRESSURE FROM TRUMP

When officers located and searched the suspect’s vehicle, they discovered ammunition. They seized a folding knife and two .223 Remington cartridges. The suspect was arrested for carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of unregistered ammunition.

Security at the Israeli Embassy had spotted the man Friday morning and noticed he was wearing what appeared to be a bulletproof vest and acting abnormally, although he did not act aggressively, they said. Embassy security then notified the Secret Service.

Streets around the embassy were blocked off for several hours.

The incident comes the same day that Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., said she will not travel to the West Bank to visit her family there, despite getting permission from Israel’s interior minister.

Earlier this year, Israel said Tlaib and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., could enter the country for an upcoming trip, which had been scheduled for this weekend. But Israel said Thursday the two women would not be allowed to enter due to their support of an anti-Israel boycott movement.

Israel later said Tlaib could enter the country to visit her grandmother, who is in her 90s.

President Trump had said it would show “great weakness” if Israel allowed Tlaib and Omar into the country.

The public is often too quick to criticize classic masculine traits while ignoring their “chivalrous” actions in tense situations, according to Miranda Devine.

In her recent New York Post column, Devine laid out cases in which the “noble side” of masculinity is often glossed over, as the writer told Dana Perino Friday on “The Daily Briefing.”

“I think we so quick to damn masculinity, and unfortunately, this sort of offshoot fo the feminism movement, this sort of mutation of the #MeToo movement, has conspired to tell boys and young men that their masculinity, their very essence, is somehow toxic — is malign and diseased,” she said.

“Every time we have these stories of mayhem and bloodshed … you see men rushing in to save the weak, to save women, save children.”

SYDNEY STABBING VICTIM IDENTIFIED AS SEX WORKER WHO REPORTEDLY SAW SUSPECT BEFORE RAMPAGE

In her column, the Australian columnist pointed to brave actions by men during a recent stabbing attack in Sydney and the actions of a bouncer during the Dayton, Ohio, shooting.

She said the bouncer, Jeremy Ganger, stood “at a door and ushered everyone in, and he was injured in the process but he protected others.” Ganger suffered a leg wound in the attack.

More from media

In Australia on Tuesday, a 21-year-old man allegedly stabbed a 24-year-old woman to death, then went on a public rampage before being confronted by a group of civilians.

Those who intervened pinned him to the ground with a milk crate until authorities were able to arrest him. New South Wales Police Superintendent Gavin Wood said it appeared that the attack was unprovoked.

In her Post column, Devine described the phenomenon of men rushing toward danger as, “the chivalry instinct.”

“We always are quick to point to the dark side of masculinity when violence is committed, but too often we overlook the feats of bravery by men who combat it,” she wrote.

Pennsylvania couple accused of faking baby’s birth, death to collect cash and gifts

A Pennsylvania couple who reportedly set up a GoFundMe page asking for donations in the wake of their newborn son’s death are now being accused by police of faking the child’s entire existence as part of a ruse to collect cash and gifts from their friends, family and community.

Geoffrey and Kaycee Lang, of Friedens, were hit with misdemeanor theft charges in Westmoreland and Somerset counties this week after police searched their home and found a doll that resembled the infant seen in photos the couple says was of their son, Easton, WTAE reported, citing court documents.

“I don’t know what their motive was – to hurt your family and everybody? It’s just sick,” Cynthia Dilascio, a friend who organized a baby shower for the couple in May and later reported them to police, told the station.

Photographs of the couple showed them opening gifts at the shower, but Dilascio says Kaycee, 23, vanished around seven months into her pregnancy, claiming she was on bed rest.

GOFUNDME REFUNDS DONORS IN ALLEGED SCAM INVOLVING HOMELESS VET, NJ COUPLE

Court documents viewed by WTAE say the couple then claimed Easton died on July 3 from respiratory distress syndrome shortly after being born at Conemaugh Health System in Johnstown, yet police couldn’t find any records of the mother or child at that facility or coroner’s office.

Dilascio also said she called the funeral home where the couple claimed the child was cremated – only to be told there was no account in the family’s name.

“I couldn’t go. I knew that this was fake,” she told WTAE when asked about the memorial service that apparently was held for Easton. “I couldn’t go and sit and watch this go on, and know the truth.”

PREGNANT MODEL SLAMS FASHION INDUSTRY FOR USING FAKE-BUMP MODELS IN MATERNITY SHOOTS

A Facebook profile purportedly belonging to Geoffrey Lang then posted a link on July 7 to a GoFundMe page set up for Easton.

“Please keep my wife and I in your thoughts and prayer. Our son Easton was born with fluid in his lungs and passed away a few hours after he was born,” the post read. “We would greatly appreciate if as many of you guys could share this and if u are stable enough to do so is donate also to help pay for the funeral expenses and medical bills.”

An obituary also was published in Easton’s name, claiming the child “weighed 7 lbs. 2 oz, and was 17 inches long.

“Easton’s parents were blessed with just a little over 5 hours before he went to his heavenly home at 8:20 am,” it read. “Easton experienced holding hands and hugs and kisses with his mommy and daddy and being told uncountable number of ‘I love yous.’”

GoFundMe said the page raised 15 donations totaling $550 – but the site says those donations will now be returned.

“This type of behavior is not tolerated on GoFundMe,” the website said in a statement to WTAE. “We will fully cooperate with law enforcement officials during their investigation and we will issue full refunds to all donors.”

A heavyweight boxing champion was charged with allowing his pet cougar to escape from his Florida home earlier this year, officials said this week.

Tyrone Spong, 33, was charged with 20 misdemeanor offenses, including keeping the cougar without a permit, allowing it to escape and not providing some kind of stimulation for the animal, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

“Mr. Spong kept an extremely dangerous class 1 cougar which ultimately escaped and was loose in a residential neighborhood during daylight hours while school was not in session during New Year’s Day 2019 resulting in threats to the public safety,” the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a report.

Spong is the World Boxing Organization Latino Heavyweight Champion. He also held titles in Glory and It’s Showtime kickboxing.

Each of the charges carries a maximum $500 fine and 60 up days in jail.

In early January, residents of Parkland, Fla., spotted what was initially believed to be a panther in a resident’s driveway. The animal, which was found with a collar, was tranquilized.

The animal was believed to be about six months old and weighed between 50 and 60 pounds at the time, according to FOX13 News. Analysis later revealed it was a captive-bred cougar and not the traditional panther usually found in south Florida.
