Chicago’s Mount Sinai goes on bypass after shootings, accidents overwhelm hospital

Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago was forced to temporarily close its doors to new patients over the weekend after shootings and accidents throughout the Illinois city overwhelmed emergency medical officials.

The hospital, located on the city’s west side, went on bypass at 4:30 a.m. Sunday and were off bypass status by 6:30 a.m., Roberta Rakove, senior vice president of external affairs, told Fox News on Monday.

CHICAGO MAYOR: POLICE ‘ARE LOSING THE STREETS’ TO MAJOR ERUPTIONS OF VIOLENCE

“Bypass” is a term used for when a hospital asks that emergency vehicles, like ambulances, pass their facility and bring patients to other locations.

Ravoka cited multiple incidents — including a shooting at Douglas Park and two motor vehicle accidents — as the catalyst for temporarily closing off the hospital to new patients.

As previously reported by Fox News, seven people were shot in Douglas Park after someone opened fire near a playground around 1:20 a.m. Rakove said Mount Sinai received five patients from that shooting, in which those shot ranged in age from 19 to 25.

“As a result of all of those patients from a capacity standpoint we made a decision to go on bypass for a period of time,” the spokesperson said.

Rakove said that Chicago has five Level 1 trauma centers with another located just outside of the city. She said that all of these centers “on occasion have capacity issues related to numbers of trauma patients at which time the trauma center at capacity will go on bypass and EMS will direct ambulances to one or more of the other trauma centers.”

As of Monday morning, seven people had been killed and 46 others injured during weekend shootings in Chicago, according to the Sun-Times.

Beto exploits tragedy of El Paso shootings for sake of politics

The bodies in El Paso were barely cold when Beto O’Rourke started blaming President Trump.

“He is a racist, and he stokes racism in this country . . . We have a president with white nationalist views in the United States today,” the failing Democratic presidential candidate told CNN all Saturday night and Sunday.

He likened Trump’s “anti-immigrant rhetoric” to something out of the Third Reich. “He is an open, avowed racist and is encouraging more racism in this country and this is incredibly dangerous . . .

“Let’s connect the dots here on . . . who is responsible for this right now.”

FORMER FBI RESPONSE TEAM MEMBER EXPLAINS HOW AUTHORITIES WILL PROCESS EL PASO EVIDENCE

CNN’s Jake Tapper cut to the chase: “Do you think President Trump is a white nationalist?”

“Yes, I do,” said Beto.

What disgusting opportunism from a man whose first recorded reaction to the news of Saturday’s massacre in his hometown was a weird smile, quickly suppressed, a man so lacking in empathy, he once wrote of his teenage fantasy of plowing his car into two children crossing the road.

But when it comes to publicity for his ridiculous presidential bid, he’s never had it so good. CNN can’t get enough of him.

It doesn’t get uglier than scoring political points on the deaths of 20 people.

But we can all play the blame game.

For years, leftists have divided the nation with identity politics and defended the fascist ideology of Islamism. Now they try to offload responsibility for the emergence of its mirror image: white identity politics and the fascist ideology of white supremacy.

In the first sentence of his so-called manifesto, a puerile mishmash of grievance, El Paso killer Patrick Crusius, 21, wrote of his “support for the Christchurch shooter and his manifesto.” This refers to the terrorist attack on two New Zealand mosques in March by Australian white supremacist Brenton Tarrant, now glorified as “St. Tarrant” in online forums such as 8chan, where Crusius’ manifesto was posted.

Like Tarrant, Crusius has read the 2011 book “The Great Replacement” by French author Renaud Camus, which claims “elites” are complicit in replacing white Europeans with non-Europeans across the West. This is the driving philosophy of white supremacists.

The problem is that these bad ideas, buttressed by cherry-picked factoids, have been driven out of the public marketplace to dark places underground, where there is no moderating influence.

Dayton suspect compiled ‘hit list’ and ‘rape list’ in high school: reports

The gunman who fatally shot nine people — including his sister — and injured more than two dozen others in Dayton, Ohio, early Sunday was reportedly suspended during his high school years for compiling a “hit list” of those he wanted to kill and a “rape list” of girls he wanted to sexually assault.

Conner Betts, 24, who was killed by police less than a minute after he opened fire outside a crowded bar, showed signs of hostility years before Sunday’s violent outburst, according to former classmates.

Betts was reportedly suspended in his junior year at Bellbrook High School after a list of names was found scrawled on a wall in a school restroom, the former classmates said. In an earlier suspension, Betts came to school with a list of female students he wanted to sexually assault.

During her freshman year, the former cheerleader said she received a phone call from a police officer who informed her that her name was included on a list of potential targets.

“The officer said [Betts] wouldn’t be at school for a while,” she said, referring to the boy’s suspension. “But after some time passed he was back, walking the halls. They didn’t give us any warning that he was returning to school.”

The discovery of the hit list in early 2012 prompted a police investigation and caused roughly one-third of students to skip school out of fear for their safety, according to the AP report.

Betts had no apparent criminal record as an adult, though if he had been charged as a juvenile those offenses would typically be sealed under state law.

“There’s nothing in this individual’s record that would have precluded him from getting these weapons,” Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said Sunday.

Former Bellbrook Principal Chris Baker said he “would not dispute that information” when asked about the hit list suspension, according to the Dayton Daily News. Baker, who resigned this summer, declined to speak further on the matter.

A former middle school classmate told the local paper that Betts had an unusual obsession with killing and death. Betts, she said, once told her that he fantasized about tying her up and slitting her throat.

“He knew it wasn’t normal,” she said. “He and I talked at length about him getting help.”

Background checks of Betts’ social media conducted by the Daily News also discovered alleged writing of phrases such as “All Shall Be Annihilated,” “Absolute Carnage” and “Bloody Massacre.”

Demoy Howell, who said he and Betts participated in Bellbrook’s Junior ROTC military program, remembered friends saying Betts made them feel threatened and uncomfortable.

“He was always a bit of an oddball,” Howell said. “He had a dark sense of humor — jokes about people dying. He would wear all black. I remember sensing a dark energy around him.”

“I think this is less of a hate crime and more of an ‘I hate everybody’ crime,” he added. “I honestly feel more comfortable now knowing that he’s gone.”

Walmart employee’s son, 31, called in threat to ‘shoot up’ store, prompting evacuation, authorities say

Authorities in Florida made an arrest Sunday after a Tampa-area Walmart store received a threat that prompted the evacuation of customers, according to reports.

The suspect, identified as Wayne Lee Padgett, 31, allegedly called and threatened to “shoot up” the Gibsonton store Sunday afternoon, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in confirming the arrest.

Padgett’s mother is an employee of the store, Sheriff Chad Chronister told Tampa Bay’s FOX 13.

Shortly after the 1:17 p.m. call, five patrol deputies arrived at the Walmart, located in the East Tampa area, as shoppers were directed out of the store and into the parking lot, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Deputies checked to make sure no one was hurt and looked for anyone acting suspiciously.

More bad news. Killings in El Paso. Shootings in Ohio. All this on the heels of a violent weekend last week. All of this violence adding up to too many mass shootings in just 216 days. Is our society coming unraveled? How are we to respond to this dark season of bloodshed?

Anger is the choice of many. Anger at politicians. Anger at the NRA. Anger at God. We become bitter and sour toward this world; toward one another.

Fear is another option. Lock the doors and close the windows. Avoid every shadow and dark alley.

TRUMP DECLARES ‘HATE HAS NO PLACE IN OUR COUNTRY,’ AS DEMS DEMAND RECALL OF CONGRESS

Yet, do we want to be a nation of fear and anger? But what can we do?

The best-known storm-story in the Bible provides some direction.

“When evening came, [Jesus’] disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. (John 6:16-18)

The hearts of the followers began to sink as their boat was certain to do. Their skin was soaked, throats hoarse, eyes, wide. They searched the sky for a break in the clouds. They gripped the boat for fear of the waves. They screamed their prayers for help. But they heard nothing.

But then the unimaginable happened: “They saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But He said to them, ‘It is I; don’t be afraid’” (John 6:19- 20).

Let’s pause and invite God to tell us his name.

The literal translation of what Jesus said is “I AM; don’t be afraid.” I AM is God’s name. If God had a calling card, it would contain this imprint: I AM. Ever since Moses saw the burning bush that refused to burn up, God has called himself, “I AM” (Ex. 3:14). This is the title of steadiness and power. When we wonder if God is coming, he answers with his name: “I AM!” When we wonder if he is able, he declares, “I AM.” When we see nothing but darkness, feel nothing but doubt, and wonder if God is near or aware, the welcome answer from Jesus is this: “I AM!”

Let’s pause and invite God to tell us his name. Our greatest need is his presence. Yes, we want this storm to pass. Yes, we want the winds to still. But yes, yes, yes, we want to know, need to know, and must know that the great I AM is coming.

More from Opinion

Such was the experience of the disciples. The moment they invited Christ into their boat was the moment they reached their destination. “So they gladly took him aboard, and at once the boat reached the shore they were making for” (John 6:21).

Let’s follow the example of the disciples. Welcome Jesus into the midst of this turbulent time.

Brazilian gang leader allegedly dresses up as daughter in failed prison escape

A Brazilian gang leader was caught trying to escape from prison by dressing up as his daughter, who was visiting him the day, authorities said Sunday.

Clauvino da Silva, also known as “Shorty,” was found out when he displayed nervousness while trying to leave the penitentiary in the western part of Rio de Janeiro.

Authorities said da Silva’s plan was to leave his 19-year-old daughter in the jail. Her possible role in the failed escape is being looked into by police investigators.

The reputed crime boss was allegedly wearing a pink t-shirt with a cartoon image of donuts, a black wig, silicon mask and tight jeans to conceal his identity. A video released by authorities appears to show him removing the mask and some of the clothes and saying his full name.

Democratic presidential primary candidate Beto O’Rourke said on Sunday that President Trump’s harsh rhetoric toward immigrants and Latinos was in part to blame for Saturday’s mass shooting inside an El Paso, Texas, Walmart that left 20 people dead and scores more injured.

O’Rourke, a former Texas congressman whose district includes El Paso, said that he believes Trump is a white nationalist and likened the president’s language to that of Nazi Germanys’ “Third Reich.”

“Let’s be very clear about what is causing this and who the president is,” O’Rourke said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “He is an open avowed racist and encouraging more racism in this country.”

POLITICIANS RESPOND TO SHOOTING AT WALMART IN EL PASO

“This cannot be open for debate and you, as well as I, have a responsibility to call that out to make sure the American people know what is being done in their name,” O’Rourke added. “He doesn’t even pretend to respect our differences or understand we are all created equal. He is saying some people are inherently defected.”

A gunman on Saturday opened fire in an El Paso shopping area packed with as many as 3,000 people during the busy back-to-school season, leaving 20 dead and more than two dozen injured.

Authorities are investigating the possibility the Saturday shooting in El Paso was a hate crime, working to confirm whether an anti-immigrant screed posted online shortly beforehand was written by the man arrested in the attack on the 680,000-resident border city.

El Paso County records Sunday showed that the purported shooter, 21-year-old Patrick Wood Crusius, was booked on capital murder charges at the downtown jail in the Texas border city. There was no immediate indication that he had an attorney.

Police were investigating whether a document posted online shortly before the shooting was written by Crusius.

Texas superintendent head-butted other superintendent at educators’ training, police say

The superintendent of a Texas school district has been briefly suspended after police claim he head-butted another superintendent while drunk at a fast-food restaurant.

Xavier De La Torre, superintendent of Ysleta Independent School District in El Paso, was suspended without pay for three days on July 30 after the alleged altercation at a Whataburger in June.

Following the July 30 meeting, school district trustees said De La Torre’s suspension was “an appropriate cause of action due to Dr. De La Torre not advising the board promptly about the incident in question,” according to the El Paso Times. Trustees didn’t acknowledge De La Torre’s alleged conduct in the incident.

A police report said De La Torre, in San Antonio with other educators for a training provided by the Texas Association of School Boards, appeared to be intoxicated and head-butted José Espinoza, superintendent for the Socorro Independent School District, which covers much of El Paso County.

De La Torre denied the incident last week, claiming he was not the aggressor and that he didn’t head-butt anyone. Espinoza, according to the Times, said the police report accurately stated what happened on June 13.
