Dem megadonor Ed Buck hit with additional federal drug charges in two overdose deaths

A federal grand jury in California has indicted wealthy Democratic megadonor Ed Buck on drug charges in connection with two overdose deaths at his West Hollywood apartment.

The indictment returned Wednesday charges Buck with distributing methamphetamine resulting in the deaths of Timothy Dean in January and Gemmel Moore in 2017. Buck had previously been charged in Moore’s death after his arrest last month.

CLINTON, OBAMA SILENT ON ED BUCK DONATIONS

Federal prosecutors said Buck, 65, preyed on vulnerable gay black men and pressured them to let him inject them with drugs as part of a sexual ritual.

Buck also is charged with providing meth to three more men, including one who overdosed twice in a week last month before escaping Buck’s home to get help and another man who said Buck threatened him with a power saw in December if he didn’t leave his apartment

Family members of the victims had criticized local prosecutors for not charging Buck in the deaths. Moore’s mother and her supporters have said Buck got favorable treatment because of his status and reputation and that the victims were ignored because they were gay black men, drug users and often sex workers.

“If white gay men had been dying in a black man’s house or anybody’s house, rather, this case would have been taken a lot more seriously,” said Jasmyne Cannick, a communications strategist who spearheaded the effort to get justice for Moore. “Ed Buck knew who he was preying on, and he knew that people would not care. Or he thought that people would not care.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reopened the case after Dean’s death Jan. 7. In July, the U.S. attorney’s office took the case after sheriff’s detectives approached a federal task force investigating opioid overdoses.

Buck was arrested Sept. 17  and hit with state charges of operating a drug house. Two days later, federal prosecutors charged him with distributing methamphetamine resulting in Moore’s death.

The federal charges bring a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years if Buck is convicted. A defense lawyer has previously said Buck, 65, denies a role in both deaths.

Buck has donated tens of thousands of dollars to California candidates, including Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, and is well known in LGBTQ political circles.  According to federal records, Buck contributed more than $500,000 to Democratic groups, including $1,500 to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and $2,950 to the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Buck gained fame by leading a 1987 campaign to recall Republican Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham, who was ultimately convicted in an impeachment trial and kicked out of office.

Buck had been a Republican but said he switched party affiliation to Democrat because he felt the GOP was intolerant toward the gay community.

Former veterans charity leader sentenced to year in prison for stealing $900G

The former executive director of a veterans charity organization, convicted last year of stealing $900,000 from the nonprofit and using it for personal expenses, has been sentenced to a year in prison, according to a report.

Patricia Driscoll, a former girlfriend of NASCAR driver Kurt Busch, was found guilty in November 2018 of wire fraud, tax evasion and first-degree fraud, according to the Justice Department. She had been accused of spending the money on jewelry, shopping trips and business ventures.

Court records showed that sentencing for Driscoll, a Maryland resident, has been stayed pending an appeal, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Tuesday.

“The court issued a thoughtful and considered sentence based on the totality of the circumstances in this case and stayed it pending appeal. With the stay, we can continue to pursue justice,” one of her attorneys, Brian Stolarz, told the newspaper.

U.S. District Judge Richard Leon also ordered Driscoll to pay $154,289 in restitution and serve 36 months’ supervised release, according to the publication.

Driscoll was the former executive director of the Armed Forces Foundation, founded in Washington, D.C., in 2001 to help promote veterans’ quality of life, The Union-Tribune has reported.

The foundation was co-founded by former Rep. Duncan L. Hunter, whose son, Rep. Duncan D. Hunter, R-Calif., now faces charges that he illegally used campaign funds for personal expenses.

Driscoll resigned from the organization after leading it for 12 years when allegations surfaced in 2018 that she’d misused funds. The nonprofit dissolved its operations in September 2018 when Driscoll was found guilty.

The nonprofit’s 2015 tax filing reportedly indicated Driscoll misspent $900,000 on personal expenses going as far back as 2006.

Former nurse pleads guilty to abusing nine infants, leaving them with broken ribs, legs

A former Wisconsin nurse pleaded guilty Monday to abusing or neglecting nine infants in a newborn intensive care unit, leaving them with an array of injuries including broken ribs and legs and a fractured skull.

Christopher Kaphaem, 44, pleaded guilty to all 19 felony counts against him. He faces up to 148 years in prison. He was expected to go to trial next month.

Madison police began investigating Kaphaem in response to reports of injuries to infants in February 2018 at the UnityPoint Health-Meriter Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU),

Iowa police have accused a 14-year-old boy of posting an advertisement for a “school shooter” on a job search website.

Fort Dodge police said Monday the boy was taken into custody and charged as a juvenile with threat of terrorism. His name was not released because he is a minor.

Police said those who saw the post Friday afternoon on the online job board Indeed.com alerted them and the Fort Dodge Community School District (FDCSD).

Police said it wasn’t readily apparent who had posted the ad because the post provided only minimal content.

Arizona bride, groom arrested in wedding-day assault on cops, police say

A just-married bride and groom in Arizona were arrested over the weekend after allegedly assaulting police officers following their wedding day festivities, authorities said.

Second person arrested in 300G heist from Kennedy Airport

A second man has been arrested in connection with the theft of $300,000 from a Florida-bound flight departing from New York‘s  Kennedy International Airport.

Authorities took Queens resident Emmanuel Asuquo Okon, 33, into custody over the weekend, officials said Monday, according to KABC-TV.

His friend, Quincy Thorpe, 40, was arrested last week in connection with the theft last Tuesday. Thorpe worked as a Delta Airlines baggage handler who authorities believe swiped a bag full of cash before it was supposed to be loaded onto a flight to Miami.

Okon is not employed by the airline but is accused of helping Thorpe.

The money was supposed to be part of a shipment of eight bags on Delta Flight 1225, prosecutors said.

Security surveillance showed Thorpe allegedly scanning and loading bags onto the flight but not scanning the stolen bag, authorities said. He placed it in a container and drove off in a work vehicle, they said.

The missing money was detected when the plane landed in Florida and a member of the armored car security team noticed the bag count was off.

Court documents said Okon used his domestic partner’s Nissan to drive to JFK and pick up the stolen bag of cash from Thorpe.

Investigators found the car Sunday and conducted a search. An envelope containing the flight’s manifest was found. Co-workers told investigators Thorpe went home sick around the time of the alleged theft.

“In my mind there’s a question of how is the money actually taken out of the airport? If there are surveillance cameras all around, that’s a question that needs to be answered going forward, but we’ll see what the government wants to do with it,” Thorpe’s attorney told the station.

Okon was released from police custody on $80,000 bond. The missing money has not been recovered.

The four men overpowered the two guards with a jailhouse knife called a “shank,” investigators said.
