A Pennsylvania amusement park has settled a lawsuit filed by a black man who said security officers racially profiled him saying he matched the description of a pickpocket, then escorted him out even after it was determined he wasn’t the suspect.

The (Allentown) Morning Call reports Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom’s parent company settled the suit for an undisclosed amount.

The lawsuit was filed in June on behalf of Benjamin Slater, a Philadelphia teacher.

A letter from Slater’s attorney to U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry Perkin in February indicated Slater had sought $1 million but was willing to settle for $500,000.

A spokeswoman for Dorney Park said the company wouldn’t comment on the settlement.

Dorney Park, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) north of Philadelphia, is owned by Cedar Fair, based in Sandusky, Ohio.

Life sentence for Missouri man who killed 4 elderly people

Westlake Legal Group og-fox-news Life sentence for Missouri man who killed 4 elderly people JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. fox-news/us/crime fnc/us fnc Associated Press article 6a193ab4-f6d7-56cc-84c1-a3ee2bcd3d1c

A Missouri man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing four elderly people nearly a decade ago.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt announced the sentence Thursday for Keith Boyles, convicted of four first-degree murder counts in February.

Authorities say the 2010 killings in rural southeast Missouri were a “test” to determine if Boyles and accomplices were capable of violence ahead of a bank robbery plot. The robbery never occurred.

The victims were 80-year-old Gladys Piatt and her 77-year-old husband, Loyd; 81-year-old Edgar Atkinson and 69-year-old Bonnie Chase.

Spouses David and Melissa Youngblood are both serving in life in prison for first-degree murder. Their daughter, Chantale, was sentenced in April to 20 years in prison on four counts of second-degree murder.

Boyles is Chantale Youngblood’s former boyfriend.

A man who fled to Mexico after authorities identified him as a suspect in the rape of a Connecticut university student has pleaded guilty to multiple charges.

The Connecticut Post reports 29-year-old Edibaldo Duran pleaded guilty Thursday to home invasion and aggravated first-degree sexual assault for the September 2014 attack on the Sacred Heart University student.

He faces 20 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced July 12.

Authorities say Duran broke into the victim’s apartment while she was still asleep and raped her.

Police released a sketch of the suspect based on the victim’s description and two witnesses later identified the sketch as Duran.

Police tracked Duran to JFK airport, but his plane was gone by the time they arrived. He was later found in Puebla, Mexico.

A jury has convicted a Detroit man in the fatal shootings of three other men inside a fast-food restaurant.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says 30-year-old William Wilbourn-Little was found guilty Thursday in circuit court of three counts of first-degree murder and two gun charges.

Police have said two men wearing masks walked up to a White Castle on Detroit’s west side just after midnight on Sept. 9 and fired shots inside the restaurant before fleeing on foot. Authorities say 25-year-old Rashawn Harrington, 24-year-old Trevaughn Anthony and 20-year-old DeShawn Gadson were pronounced dead at the scene.

Wilbourn-Little’s sentencing is scheduled for May 16.

Family of UNC Charlotte shooting victim Riley Howell ‘beyond proud’ of heroic actions attacking gunman

The mother of the North Carolina college student who was shot dead while confronting a gunman in his classroom said Thursday she was “beyond proud” of her son’s heroic actions during the rampage on the campus that left another student dead and 4 others injured.

Riley Howell, 21, died in his classroom at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on Tuesday after charging and tackling the alleged gunman, identified as 22-year-old Trystan Andrew Terrell.

“While kids were running one way, our son turned and ran towards the shooter,” Natalie Henry-Howell, Riley’s mother, told NBC’s “Today” show on Thursday. “If he was in the room when something like that was happening, and he had turned away, he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself.”

Howell’s 14-year-old brother Teddy told “Today” his older sibling would always “put others before himself.”

“There was no question, there was no doubt that he would have done what he did,” he said Thursday.

Howell was with classmates for end-of-year presentations in an anthropology class when the shooting happened. Officials have not said what motivated the attack, but that Terrell had a lot of ammunition with a legally obtained pistol.

They’re twin brothers who were a lot alike — before one was fatally shot by police in Mississippi.

Lawrence and William Bottoms, born 29 years ago, each had tattoos on their faces — and each faced trouble with the law.

Lawrence Bottoms was killed Monday after he allegedly pulled a gun on police officers. Surviving brother William is set to stand trial in Louisiana for allegedly killing two men in 2017.

FLORIDA MAN WITH TATTOO-COVERED FACE ARRESTED IN 2001 COLD CASE MURDER

Lawrence Bottoms had been convicted of aggravated battery in 2017 for stabbing a teenager in the face with a screwdriver in 2015, the Advocate of Baton Rouge reported. The teen died months later from the injuries. Bottoms was arrested again in 2017 for possessing a firearm while a convicted felon — a charge that would contribute to his demise.

Hancock County deputies killed Bottoms on Monday while trying to serve a warrant related to the firearm charge. He had violated parole by missing a court date, the newspaper reported. When arriving at the home, officers called for him to surrender for about 15-20 minutes, police said at a news conference.

When Bottoms failed to come out, officers evacuated the home next door and shot several rounds of tear gas. The man then jumped from a second-story window and ran into the woods. Police said officers followed him, he pulled a gun on them and two deputies fired. Drugs were also found at the home.

William Bottoms Jr. is accused of fatally shooting Mohamed S. Hussain, 29, and Derrick D. Williams, 23, in 2017 while in a car and dumping their bodies in the St. Helena Parish area of Baton Rouge. Prosecutors dropped charges against the car’s driver, Megan Marie Gaylord, who agreed to testify against him. Gaylord said the four were using drugs when Bottoms became paranoid and shot the two other men in the back seat, an arrest report said.

Bottoms is scheduled to stand trial May 13, but his defense team requested the trial be pushed back. Prosecutors did not oppose the request. He will face a mandatory sentence of life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder, the Advocate reported.

Chicago woman accused in Iowa sister’s stabbing death not guilty due to insanity, judge rules

A Chicago woman whom prosecutors say fatally stabbed her sister while visiting Iowa in 2017 was found not guilty on reason of insanity last week and will undergo a complete psychiatric evaluation that will determine if she is fit to be released back into public life.

Leisha McDuffy, 33, of Chicago entered her then 30-year-old sister Lakeisha McDuffy’s bedroom in another relative’s Des Moines apartment on Sept. 10, 2017, and stabbed the sister multiple times in front of her children, authorities have said. A wound to the victim’s chest punctured her heart.

A medical examiner also found seven stab wounds to the upper right back and two wounds to the upper right arm, determining “Lakeisha died from multiple sharp force trauma,” WOI-DT reported, citing court documents.

FORMER IOWA SOFTBALL STANDOUT, 25, KILLED BY APPARENT STRAY BULLET; POLICE INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE ILLEGAL HUNTER

Last week, Polk County Judge Jeffrey Farrell found McDuffy not guilty of first-degree murder by reason of insanity after mental health experts reported that she showed symptoms of severe schizophrenia disorder. Both sides in the case hired psychiatrists to evaluate the defendant.

In 2018, District Judge Heather Lauber originally found McDuffy incompetent to stand trial and “a danger to public health and safety.” McDuffy was committed to the custody of the Iowa Department of Corrections to receive treatment until she was restored to the mental competency required to appear before the court, the Des Moines Register reported.

“Based on the reports from each parties’ expert witness, and the evidence in support of their opinions, the court concludes that defendant has met her burden of proving the insanity defense,” Farrell wrote in last week’s ruling.

Dr. Steven Bruce, who was hired by the defense, examined McDuffy twice — once in December 2017 and again in January 2019. “He stated defendant’s primary mental health diagnosis was severe schizophrenia disorder,” the ruling said.

Schizophrenia is “diagnosed after a patient shows at least two of the following five symptoms”: Delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior and negative symptoms,” the ruling explained.

Bruce identified three of the five in McDuffy: delusions, hallucinations and disorganized speech. A second psychiatrist hired by prosecutors, Dr. Tracy Thomas, observed all five symptoms of the mental disorder during a February 2019 evaluation.

McDuffy will receive a complete psychiatric evaluation at Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Oakdale to provide the court with insight on whether she is mentally ill and dangerous to herself and others. The report must be returned to the court within 15 days of admission.

“If, upon hearing, the court finds that the defendant is not mentally ill and no longer dangerous to the defendant’s self or to others, the court shall order the defendant release,” Iowa’s Chapter 2 Rules of Criminal Procedure states.

A Virginia man was arrested last week after he allegedly shot two people because they seemingly disagreed on a topic: which is better, a Chevy or a Ford?

Mark Turner, 56, was taken into custody on April 23 after the incident, which took place the night before. Turner, his girlfriend, his girlfriend’s son and the son’s girlfriend were eating dinner at a home in Bedford, a city roughly 28 miles east of Roanoke, when the group went out to the front yard.

Soon, an argument broke out between Turner and his girlfriend’s son, WSET reported. The two couldn’t agree on whether Chevrolet or Ford vehicles were better.

Turner allegedly whipped out a knife during his argument, a situation which Turner’s girlfriend tried to deescalate. According to the Bedford County Commonwealth’s Attorney Wes Nance, Turner’s girlfriend was stabbed with the knife in her lower back, sustaining a six-inch wound.

The man then retrieved a gun from inside the home. When his girlfriend again put herself between Turner and her son, Turner allegedly shot her in the leg five times, and shot her son in the arm.

Two of Turner’s bullets that ricocheted ended up hitting the son’s girlfriend in the back and in her cheek.

Prosecutors alleged that Turner then barricaded himself inside the home, continually leaving to shout at police. Investigators ultimately shot Turner with a bean bag round and took him into custody.

Nance said that alcohol might’ve been involved. Search warrants reportedly indicated that “there was possible drug activity at the residence.”

Turner was charged with felony malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a felon following the shooting, according to online records.
