A Marine Corps reservist is under investigation for a photo on Instagram that appeared to show several Marines positioning their boots in the shape of a swastika, the Marine Forces Reserve confirmed Monday.

“We can confirm that Pfc. Anthony D. Schroader is a member of the Selected Marine Corps Reserve and is assigned to 4th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, Force Headquarters Group, Marine Forces Reserve located in West Palm Beach, Florida,” Marine Forces Reserve told ABC News.

MARINES COULD BE ENDING LONGTIME POLICY OF SEPARATING MALE, FEMALE RECRUITS DURING BOOT CAMP

Schroader allegedly sent the photo to Marine veteran and “Terminal Lance” creator Maximilian Uriarte on April 26, asking Uriarte to share the image on the social media pages for the popular comic series about the Marine Corps.

Uriarte, who is Jewish, sent a tweet to the Marine Corps asking officials to investigate, according to Task & Purpose, which first reported the story.

“There is no place for racial hatred or extremism in the Marine Corps,” Maj. Roger Hollenbeck told Task & Purpose. “The ‘Terminal Lance’ tweet featuring derogatory behavior by Marines is currently being investigated and any further comment would be premature.”

Hollenbeck declined to say how many Marines in total are under investigation, due to the ongoing probe.

President Trump on Wednesday said he is overturning the military’s plan to decommission the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman, promising it will be updated “at the fraction of the cost of a new one” instead.

“I am overriding the Decommission Order of the magnificent aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman, built in 1998 (fairly new), and considered one of the largest and finest in the world,” the president tweeted. “It will be updated at a fraction of the cost of a new one (which also are being built)!”

US MILITARY STOPS RELEASING AFGHAN WAR INFORMATION

The Navy announced plans to scrap the aircraft carrier in February as part of a cost-saving move to bring in more advanced aircraft carriers. The Navy said that the move not to refuel the Truman (with a new nuclear reactor normally done at the mid-point of ship’s life after 25 years) and retire her early would save $30 billion.

Adm. John Richardson defended the move this week, saying that it was important to keep Navy technology moving.

“So, we’re trying to move, and that is exactly the decision dynamic with respect to what’s more relevant for the future,” the admiral said, according to The Washington Examiner. “Is it going to be the Harry S. Truman and its air wing where there’s a lot of innovation taking place, or is it something else?”

But lawmakers on both sides of the aisles opposed the decision, and Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday visited the Truman in Norfolk, Va., to announce Trump’s decision.

“We are keeping the best carrier in the world in the fight. We are not retiring the Truman,” Pence announced to applause. “The U.S.S. Harry S. Truman is gonna be giving ‘em hell for many years to come.”

Last fall the Truman became the first American aircraft carrier to conduct flight operations above the Arctic Circle in nearly 30 years to send a message to the Russians, according to officials.

Donald Trump Jr. accused the “social media gods” at Instagram of bias and censorship Tuesday after a photo of him smiling alongside a wounded U.S. Army veteran was reportedly deleted from the platform.

The president’s eldest son posed with retired Army Sgt. Omar “Crispy” Avila at an NRA convention in Indianapolis last week. The veteran from Texas claimed that Instagram took down the photo from his account.

TRUMP JR. CALLS MAINSTREAM MEDIA ‘A BLIGHT ON OUR REPUBLIC’

“I honestly don’t know why this picture was taken down by Instagram,” Avila wrote Monday on a repost of the image. “Not sure what guidelines it violates But here we go again… Thank you @donaldjtrumpjr for always taking the time out your busy schedule to say hello to chat.”

WARNING: GRAPHIC LANGUAGE

Trump Jr. posted the photo to his official Instagram account on Tuesday with some harsh words for the Facebook-owned app. It remains unclear whether Instagram did remove the original image from the platform.

“INSTAGRAM IS AT IT AGAIN WITH THEIR BIAS DELETING POSTS,” Trump Jr. wrote Tuesday. “There was nothing harsh or political in there and as usual it magically somehow ‘violated @Instagram standards,’ presumably because I’m in it.”

“If @instagram can censor this great American hero for simply posting a picture with me, who won’t they censor? The bias has to stop. It’s gone too far,” Trump Jr. added on Twitter.

He concluded his Instagram post by praising the “severely wounded” Avila for his positive use of Instagram to spread messages of support for other wounded veterans.

“His adventures often documented right here are amazing,” he wrote. “I’ve never once seen anything but an incredible attitude towards life despite the obvious.”

Arnold Fisher: America must confront the suicide crisis facing the military

Westlake Legal Group VeteransDay-720 Arnold Fisher: America must confront the suicide crisis facing the military fox-news/us/military/veterans fox-news/us/military fox-news/opinion fox news fnc/opinion fnc article Arnold Fisher 0d61d873-ae29-513b-8c01-2d813a2cc05d

The suicide epidemic in the United States military is the most immediate problem facing our armed forces today. Much media attention has been given to our brave veterans and the struggles they have faced reintegrating to civilian life, and rightly so. Yet, recent news related to a new measure signed by President Trump did not mention the alarming rate at which this crisis plagues active duty service members as well — not veterans alone.

It’s a slight distinction, but an important one. Active duty service members eventually become veterans and reintegrate into our society. Being able to treat them while they are still active, will help to eliminate this crisis.

Since 2000, close to 400,000 service members have been diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) according to the Department of Defense. While there is no single cause to this problem, we know that Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and (TBI) are the signature injuries of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These injuries are difficult to diagnose and treat, and early diagnosis and treatment increase the chances for recovery. Left unchecked, these issues will continue to affect our heroes and their families not just while they serve our nation, but for decades to come.

SUICIDE RATES UP AMONG YOUNGER VETERANS, VA SAYS

The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF) and the Department of Defense leadership recognized the significant challenge presented by the staggering numbers of military personnel who were suffering TBI injuries and PTS, many from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. They both felt this needed to be addressed, resulting in the opening of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) in 2010.

Following the opening of NICoE, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund launched its current effort: building Intrepid Spirit Centers to serve as satellites to NICoE to extend care to the home base of many of the troops suffering the effects of TBI and PTS.

Any solution to the suicide crisis our military faces must include an investment in psychological health care to adequately treat the invisible wounds of war in America’s active duty service members.

On Thursday, May 2, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund will be breaking ground on a 25,000 square-foot facility at Eglin Air Force base in Florida, which will diagnose and treat Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) in regional active duty service members. Eglin’s new Intrepid Spirit Center will be equipped with the latest in brain technology and treatment facilities, and be the eighth in a series of ten centers built by the IFHF and located at military bases around the country. These centers act as gymnasiums for the brain, providing service members with the most advanced care available to address the complex symptoms of TBI and PTS.

Experts at each center provide specialized care using traditional methods, such as neurological exams, physical therapy and sleep studies, combined with integrated health treatments, including acupuncture, yoga, mindfulness, art and music therapy. With centers built at military bases around the country, being able to treat our heroes closer to their homes where they are surrounded by their family, has been shown to be much more effective. In fact, this model of care has enabled more than 90 percent of patients to continue on active duty with many of their symptoms reduced or controlled.

As a nonprofit organization, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is capable of building the centers quickly, making them available to treat patients. Since the centers are privately funded, they provide a way for individual Americans to personally support those who have sacrificed so much in service to our nation.

Thankfully, we are able to build these centers because of the continued generosity of the American people. After they are operational, we turn them over to the Department of Defense to run.

America still has the greatest military in the world, and the greatest military in the world deserves the greatest health care in the world. As citizens who benefit from their sacrifice, it is our sacred duty to ensure they receive it. Any solution to the suicide crisis our military faces must include an investment in psychological health care to adequately treat the invisible wounds of war in America’s active duty service members.

US weighs designating Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group

The White House says President Donald Trump is working with his national security team on perhaps designating the Muslim Brotherhood a foreign terrorist organization.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders says Trump is consulting with Mideast leaders who share his concern about the group. She says the designation is working its way through the “internal process.”

The Muslim Brotherhood is an Islamist movement with followers across the Middle East. Some only espouse the group’s hardline political views, while others support violence. That makes any designation hard to enforce. It also could further strain U.S. relations with Turkey. The president of Turkey’s political party is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway told reporters Tuesday that a designation wouldn’t create any diplomatic complications for the administration.

The only service branch of the U.S. armed forces that separates its male and female recruits during boot camp could be ditching that practice as soon as next year.

Lt. Gen. David Berger, the general nominated to lead the Marine Corps, made the announcement Tuesday during a Senate confirmation hearing.

“I talked to the commandant this morning about it and… I said, ‘We have to look at this for perhaps next year,’ and he said, ‘Absolutely,'” Berger said, according to Military.com. “I think it’s a discussion that he and I will have — and the Marine Corps will have.”

The website says those in favor of the change have argued that separating the two genders during training creates instant divisions and has led to tensions among male and female Marines in recent years.

Advocates for maintaining the status quo say it ensures that recruits don’t get distracted while forming bonds with their drill instructors.

The Marines appeared to test the proposed changes earlier this year when a mixed-gender training battalion – the first of its kind, comprised of one female platoon and five male platoons – graduated from boot camp at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in South Carolina.

Outside of the recruits being housed in different living quarters, the training regimen remained the same.

“Combining platoons into a single company this training cycle offered an initial opportunity to assess some opportunities, challenges, outcomes and achievements in training, logistics and resources,” Jessica Hanley, a spokeswoman with the Marine Corps Combat Development Command, told Military.com.

Berger has said that training class performed “very well.”

“The statistics… for this company were the same as every other company — a few areas higher, a few areas lower — but it went great,” he said, according to Military.com.

Trump wants to charge asylum-seekers to apply

Westlake Legal Group trump-wants-to-charge-asylum-seekers-to-apply Trump wants to charge asylum-seekers to apply JILL COLVIN fox-news/us/military fnc/us fnc Associated Press article 40f1d6c4-c001-572c-a5f1-55c1aeb30857

President Donald Trump is proposing charging asylum-seekers a fee to process their applications as he continues to try to crack down on the surge of Central American migrants trying to cross into the U.S.

In a presidential memorandum signed Monday, Trump directed his attorney general and acting homeland security secretary to take additional measures to overhaul the asylum system, which he insists “is in crisis” and plagued by “rampant abuse.”

The changes are just the latest in a series of proposals from an administration that is struggling to cope with a surge of migrant families arriving at the southern border that has overwhelmed federal resources and complicated Trump’s efforts to claim victory at the border as he runs for re-election. Most of those arriving say they are fleeing violence and poverty and many request asylum under U.S. and international law.

As part of the memo, Trump is giving officials 90 days to come up with new regulations to ensure that applications are adjudicated within 180 days of filing, except under exceptional circumstances.

And he is directing officials to begin charging a fee to process asylum and employment authorization applications — which do not currently require payment.

The White House and DHS officials did not immediately respond to questions about how much applicants might be forced to pay, and it is unclear how many families fleeing poverty would be able to afford such a payment.

The memo says the price would not exceed the cost of processing applications, but officials did not immediately provide an estimate for what that might be.

Trump also wants to bar anyone who has entered or tried to enter the country illegally from receiving a provisional work permit and is calling on officials to immediately revoke work authorizations when individuals are denied asylum and ordered removed from the country.

He is also calling on Homeland Security to reassign immigration officers and any other staff “to improve the integrity of adjudications of credible and reasonable fear claims, to strengthen the enforcement of the immigration laws, and to ensure compliance with the law by those aliens who have final orders of removal.”

Arrests along the southern border have skyrocketed in recent months, with border agents making more than 100,000 arrests or denials of entry in March, a 12-year high.

A baby kangaroo died after escaping from a truck while visiting a central Arkansas military base for a family event.

Cockrill’s Country Critters Mobile Petting Zoo and Pony Rides said in a social media post that volunteers had searched for Hoppy since he escaped a cloth pouch and jumped from the truck’s window Saturday morning at Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville, about 13 miles (21 kilometers) from Little Rock. Volunteers searched for the kangaroo over the weekend, and petting zoo owner Jan Cockrill-Griffin said Monday that Hoppy was spotted Sunday night and then found dead the next morning.

Cockrill-Griffin said she suspects the kangaroo was attacked by another animal at some point after escaping the truck because he had puncture wounds on his face.

The 19th Force Support Squadron said Hoppy was a 9-month-old red kangaroo and was at the base for its Family Fest.

The petting zoo has six adult kangaroos and two babies, along with other animals, Cockrill-Griffin said. The animals are treated like personal pets and can be educational for children, she said.

Hoppy was named by a girl who was diagnosed with cancer and has since died, Cockrill-Griffin said.

“To us, he was special,” she said.

The Pentagon says the acting defense secretary, Patrick Shanahan, has approved a plan to send about 320 more troops to the U.S.-Mexican border to provide additional support, such as driving Customs and Border Protection vehicles to transport migrants.

The decision announced Monday evening provides approval for a plan the Pentagon disclosed last Friday.

The Pentagon says the extra troop support will cost about $7.4 million through Sept. 30.

The decision allows the newly deployed troops to have contact with migrants when necessary to perform their tasks. In such cases, there are to be civilian Department of Homeland Security personnel nearby to conduct law enforcement functions.
