Indiana HS cuts ties with gay teacher to stay in archdiocese: report

A high school in northern Indianapolis said Sunday that it will cut ties with a gay teacher in order to stay in the city’s archdiocese, a decision made about a week after another school in the area declined to terminate a gay teacher and split from the archdiocese.

In a letter addressed to the “Cathedral family,” a board member at Cathedral High School announced its decision to end the employment of a teacher in a same-sex marriage, The Indianapolis Star reported.  School administrators said it was an “agonizing decision” but said it was forced to part ties or it would have had to forfeit its Catholic identity.

The report said Cathedral relies heavily on the archdiocese, unlike Brebeuf Jesuit Prep, that refused to terminate the teacher. The archdiocese announced last week that to “effectively bear witness to Christ, whether they teach religion or not, all ministers in their professional and private lives must convey and be supportive of Catholic Church teaching.”

The paper noted that statement was in response to Brebeuf, not Cathedral.

Buttigieg town hall devolves into shouting amid anger over South Bend police shooting

A town hall featuring South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg devolved into chaos Sunday as the city struggled to respond to a deadly police-involved shooting last week.

In his opening remarks, the 37-year-old Buttigieg, a Democrat and candidate for president, said he would send a letter to the Justice Department requesting that its civil rights division look into the June 16 shooting of 54-year-old Eric Logan, who was black. The mayor added that he would notify the local prosecutor that he’d like an independent investigator appointed.

Buttigieg also admitted that the city’s efforts to recruit more minority police officers and require officers to use body cameras “have not succeeded and I accept responsibility for that.” Prosecutors said the shooting of Logan was not recorded by Sgt. Ryan O’Neill’s body camera.

PETE BUTTIGIEG NOW REGRETS SAYING ‘ALL LIVES MATTER’

O’Neill, who is white, was responding to a report of a suspicious person breaking into cars when investigators said he fired one shot that hit Logan and another that missed after Logan threatened him with a knife. The investigators said O’Neill’s body camera wasn’t automatically activated because he was driving slowly without emergency lights while looking through an apartment building parking lot. O’Neill has since been placed on administrative leave.

Logan’s death prompted Buttigieg to cancel much of his out-of-state campaigning this week. Buttigieg returned to campaigning Friday with a trip to Miami but skipped a South Carolina event attended by 21 other presidential candidates to fly home for a Friday evening community march.

The town hall was interrupted frequently by outbursts and heckling. At one point, a man yelled at Buttigieg: “You gotta get back to South Carolina like you was yesterday? Talk about ‘all lives matter’ in South Carolina?” Another man approached the stage to yell at Buttigieg and South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski, ignoring the moderator’s attempts to restore order.

“I don’t want to seem defensive, but we have taken a lot of steps,” Buttigieg said at one point. “They clearly haven’t been enough. But I can’t accept the suggestion that we haven’t done anything.”

Meanwhile, attorney Brian Coffman has said he was preparing a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of South Bend on behalf of Logan’s family and has accused the police department and other city officials of tolerating bad behavior by officers.

“That’s just being reactive,” Coffman told The Associated Press when asked about Buttigieg’s response to the shooting. “It’s not being proactive and making sure this never happened and having rules in place for South Bend police officers and body cameras.”

An Indianapolis woman was rescued from a silo Saturday after claiming she spent a week trapped at the bottom, officials said.

Workers had been preparing to replace the 30-foot silo when they discovered the unidentified woman, the Indianapolis Fire Department tweeted.

FATHER, SON KILLED IN COLLAPSE INSIDE SILO AT WISCONSIN FARM

The 28-year-old woman told crews she was homeless and had been looking for shelter when she fell in a week ago. She said she climbed up the outside ladder on the silo, but when she mounted the inside ladder she fell all the way down.

Crews rescued the woman in 15 minutes, removing her through the lower silo hatch. The department assessed her at the scene. She was described as being “alert” and “oriented” with no visible signs of injury.

Buttigieg facing scrutiny as family of black man killed by cop plans lawsuit against city

A lawyer for the family of a black man killed by an Indiana police officer says South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg hasn’t been “proactive” about officer-involved shootings.

Eric Logan’s family plans a civil rights lawsuit against the city after the 54-year-old man was fatally shot on the street last Sunday while allegedly threatening police with a knife.

BUTTIGIEG SAYS TRUMP USING JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AS ‘HIS OWN PERSONAL LAW FIRM’

The officer’s body camera was switched off at the time, something Buttigieg said he’s “very frustrated” about. The Democrat and 2020 presidential candidate left the campaign trail for several days to “be with the South Bend community,” according to the Washington Post.

Logan family attorney Brian Coffman said in an interview that systemic problems were to blame for the man’s death.

“It is overall total acceptance of this behavior by the South Bend Police Department and the city itself,” Coffman said.

Members of the community have criticized Buttigieg for speaking to the media before the family and missing a vigil for Logan. The shooting has highlighted the candidate’s distance between black members of his community and – on a larger scale – black voters.

Despite Buttigieg directing the South Bend police chief to remind officers that body cameras must be on during an interaction with civilians, Coffman says his response to the incident has been “reactive” and he should have made sure these types of incidents didn’t happen in the first place.

“I will write a letter to the [Department of Justice] explaining what’s happening, explaining why there is not community confidence in the current process,” Buttigieg said at a South Bend rally for Logan on Friday, according to South Bend’s WNDU-TV.

Buttigieg skipped an event in South Carolina on Friday but joined seven other candidates at a forum in Miami, speaking about immigration.

Judge vacates Arkansas man’s death sentence in 1994 kidnap, murder of Texas girl

A federal judge in Indiana Thursday threw out the federal death sentence for an Arkansas man convicted of kidnapping and murdering a 16-year-old Texas girl in 1994, ruling the man’s intellectual disability precluded his execution.

Bruce Carneil Webster, now 46, was one of five men prosecutors say kidnapped Lisa Rene from her Arlington, Texas home to get back at her two brothers for a botched $5,000 marijuana deal. Over two days, Lisa was taken to Arkansas, gang-raped, bludgeoned with a shovel and buried alive.

Rene was dragged from the family’s apartment as she pleaded with a 911 operator. “They’re trying to break down my door! Hurry up!” she said, according to a tape of the call.

Attorneys for Webster, who is housed at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Ind. had challenged the death sentence based on what they claimed was previously unavailable evidence that medical professionals had found Webster to be intellectually disabled before his trial.

EX-ARKANSAS STATE SENATOR’S CAMPAIGN STAFFER, ‘FRIEND’ CHARGED IN POLITICIAN’S MURDER

In his ruling, U.S. District Judge William T. Lawrence cited a 1993 application for Social Security benefits by Webster, in which two psychologists and a physician found him to be “mentally retarded and antisocial.” He also cited seven different IQ tests taken by Webster between 1992 and  2018, in which Webster scored between 59 and 65. An IQ score of about 70 is considered a benchmark for intellectual disability.

“The scores … consistently demonstrate that Webster has an IQ that falls within the range of someone with intellectual deficits,” wrote Lawrence, who dismissed arguments by prosecutors that Webster deliberately underperformed on the tests so as not to jeopardize his application for Social Security benefits.

“The application materials revealed that Webster was barely literate,” the judge wrote. “For example, for information about his job duties, Webster listed his job title as ‘Cement’.”

Webster’s appellate attorneys have said his trial attorneys tried to get the Social Security records but were given nothing. Steven Wells, a member of Webster’s legal team, called the ruling a “just outcome” for “an intellectually disabled man who never should have been sentenced to death.”

Erin Dooley, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Dallas, which tried Webster, said prosecutors are evaluating how to proceed following the ruling. Prosecutors had argued in court documents that prosecutors argued Webster was faking his intellectual disability, had sufficient mental capabilities to manage a drug dealing business and that during his crime, Webster “demonstrated an ability to plan, strategize, and adapt, particularly in his numerous efforts to conceal his crime by destroying forensic evidence.”

The case has been sent back to federal court in Dallas for resentencing.

Webster had been set to be put to death in April 2007, but the execution was later postponed. Orlando Hall of El Dorado, Ark., was also sentenced to death for Rene’s murder and remains on death row.

There are currently 62 inmates on federal death row in the U.S., according to the Death Penalty Information Center. The last federal execution took place in 2003.

President Trump met with Indianapolis 500 winner Simon Pagenaud, Team Penske and team owner Roger Penske Monday at the White House, congratulating them on their dramatic victory last month.

Trump called Pagenaud an “incredible racer,” and said he’s been a longtime friend of Penske – a businessman in the automotive industry involved in both IndyCar and NASCAR racing.

“It’s a great honor to introduce the winner of the Indianapolis 500, Simon Pagenaud,” Trump said. “He is an incredible racer.”

He continued, “I happened to be watching that one because my friend [Penske] is somewhat involved with racing.”

Trump noted Penske-owned cars have won 18 Indianapolis 500s, including Pagenaud’s last month.

“This is an incredible machine,” the president added, pointing to Pagenaud’s neon green #22 Menards car.

“The job that Simon did, if you saw that, that was talent and it was a lot of courage – because I wouldn’t do it… even for that trophy.”

Pagenaud narrowly held off Alexander Rossi to take the checkered flag on May 26 in Indianapolis.

Trump noted Penske recently visited the White House to celebrate the 2018 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series championship of driver Joey Logano.

“I love NASCAR, because they endorsed me,” he said with a smile.

Former NASCAR CEO Brian France endorsed Trump during the 2016 election. France’s uncle, Jim, has since taken the reins of the stock car racing organization.

Later, Pagenaud thanked Trump for the invitation and said it was a privilege to represent his home country, France, at the White House.

“As a Frenchman, it’s such an honor to represent my country here today, in the biggest race in the world. Especially, being invited to come to the White House with President Trump, is a phenomenal achievement,” he said, going on to give credit to Penske and his team.

Indianapolis street named after Mario Andretti to celebrate 50th anniversary of his Indy 500 win

Mario Andretti would either be the worst or best traffic planner, depending on your point of view.

The racing icon was honored in Indianapolis today by having a section of downtown street renamed Mario Andretti Drive as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of his 1969 Indianapolis 500 win.

Mario got into a cherry picker to help put up the sign, which will hang at the corner of Washington and Meridian through the end of the month, with the Indy 500 scheduled for Sunday, May 26.

It’s not the first time a street has been renamed for Andretti. After his win at the 53rd running of the Great American Race, his then-hometown of Nazareth, Penn., changed the name of the street that he lived on to Victory Lane and renumbered the homes so that his would be 53.

MARIO ANDRETTI HAS A HILARIOUS TAKE ON MAKING ELECTRIC CARS LOUDER

But the 79-year-old speed demon isn’t content with just having his name on the Indianapolis street. He joked on Twitter that he’s “negotiating what the speed limit will be,” and that he “’brought a Sharpie” in case he doesn’t like what the current sign says.

For the record, the city council voted earlier this year to lower the speed limit downtown to 25 mph, which is just a little slower than Andretti is used to driving. Two men have been arrested in connection with the shootings of two southern Indiana judges outside a fast-food restaurant, according to Indianapolis police.

Police said Tuesday that detectives arrested 41-year-old Brandon Kaiser and 23-year-old Alfredo Vazquez for alleged roles in the shootings of Clark Circuit Judges Bradley Jacobs and Andrew Adams last Wednesday.

Police have said they’ve found no evidence to suggest the judges — both are hospitalized in stable condition — were targeted because of their occupations in the justice system.

Marion County Jail records shown Kaiser faces preliminary charges of attempted murder, battery, aggravated battery and carrying a handgun without a license, and Vazquez is charged with assisting a criminal.

Both men are due in court Wednesday.

“Our judges across the state are heartbroken to learn of this violent act against our colleagues,” Kathryn Dolan, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Supreme Court, said in an emailed statement last week. “We send our prayers for a speedy recovery for both Judge Jacobs and Judge Adams and our love and support to their families and the Clark County community.”

Clark County is in southern Indiana, just across the Ohio River from Louisville, Ky.

Just since that date, the task-force investigating the murders has received more than 2,200 emails and 400 calls with offers of information, the station reported.

In addition, the task force received another 135 tips since April 22 from local police departments that were contacted by people who called on the phone or showed up in person.

The information released last month included a much different sketch from the original suspect drawing, which was of a person no longer being sought by authorities. The newly released sketch depicted a man with a youthful appearance in his 20s or 30s.

“The person depicted in the originally released sketch is not presently a person of interest in this investigation,” police said April 24 in explaining the reason for releasing another sketch.

Police said then that they now believe the girls’ killer is someone with Delphi roots.

“We also believe this person is from Delphi currently or has previously lived here, visits Delphi on a regular basis or works here,” Doug Carter, the head of state police, said in April, according to the station.
