Buttigieg reportedly helped create a phone tree to alert families about ICE raids

Westlake Legal Group Pete-Buttigieg-AP Buttigieg reportedly helped create a phone tree to alert families about ICE raids Sam Dorman fox-news/us/us-regions/midwest/indiana fox-news/us/immigration fox-news/person/pete-buttigieg fox news fnc/politics fnc article 9d697289-6bc7-5ad8-bc0b-ea774604363b

South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg reportedly helped create an alert system that would notify families if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided his residents’ homes or businesses.

The “phone tree,” according to The Daily Beast on Wednesday, was one of several actions Buttigieg took to protect illegal immigrants in his town. Phone trees consist of an automated calling system that helps spread messages quickly and efficiently.

Those would presumably help alert immigrants to the type of surprise raids that resulted in nearly 700 arrests in Mississippi.

His approach to immigration came under legal scrutiny when Judicial Watch, a right-leaning organization, sued the city over a “Community Resident Card” program that Buttigieg reportedly developed with the help of La Casa, a left-wing, pro-immigration group.

SEN. COTTON ON DEMS BLASTING TRUMP OVER GREEN CARD RULE: ‘THEY’RE DERANGED BY THE PRESDIENT’

The program allowed residents to open bank accounts, fill prescriptions, and use public services without fear that authorities would find out their immigration status. Buttigieg specifically partnered with local businesses on the program and directed utilities and other services to accept the cards as a valid form of identification.

Buttigieg was just one of many 2020 Democratic presidential candidates who sought to help immigrants avoid interactions with federal immigration enforcement.

A long list of Democrats has criticized the Trump administration’s immigration policy as racist, xenophobic, and even as a way of terrorizing families.

On Monday, the administration prompted criticism by releasing a controversial rule that would limit green card recipients depending on whether they met a certain income threshold or relied on public assistance.

Trump has also leveled fierce criticism at “sanctuary cities” that refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement on requests to continue detaining illegal immigrants. Buttigieg has blasted that type of cooperation as “conscription,” although Indiana has banned “sanctuary cities” in the state.

Ohio doctor hits dog with hammer and shoots it, prosecutor says

An Ohio doctor said he was acting in self-defense Saturday when he beat his 5-year-old English Mastiff with a hammer and then shot the dog, according to prosecutors.

Authorities responded to the home of Joseph Stubbers, in West Harrison, Ind., after a neighbor grew concerned for the dog, Cooper, and called 911 after noticing the man was cleaning his garage with bleach.

Joseph Stubbers was arrested after he allegedly struck his dog with a hammer and shot it, prosecutors said. (Dearborn County Jail)

When deputies responded, they discovered “spots of blood, a hose turned on, bleach sitting on top of a trashcan, [and] a live .40 caliber round sitting in the driveway,” the Dearborn/Ohio County Prosecutor’s Office wrote in a press release.

Deputies said two spent .40 caliber rounds and one bullet with hair on it were also found at the home.

Investigators followed a trail of blood toward the front of the house, where they saw “a large dog on the front porch with the doors open and it licking its front leg.” The dog’s right eye was “mutilated” and had fresh blood coming out of it, according to prosecutors.

Stubbers told deputies the dog attacked him and he felt “he had to put the dog down tonight.” When a deputy told him the dog was still alive, Stubbers allegedly said the dog “latched” onto his arm earlier, prompting Stubbers to whack the dog with a hammer in self-defense.

Deputies stated they didn’t see any marks on Stubbers’ arms that would indicate the dog attacked him.

One neighbor told WKRC that Cooper is a friendly dog.

“Really good dog,” said the resident, who was not identified. “Fed Ex, UPS and the big companies love him when they come to make deliveries. Just a great dog.”

Stubbers, who reportedly owns Fairfield Primary Care in Ohio was charged with felony animal cruelty.

Officials said the dog was taken in by Dearborn County Animal Control and was being treated by veterinarians.

Police said the appointment was scheduled at 2:30 p.m. but Ost arrived at 2:40 p.m. After a physician examined her baby, she became “belligerent” and started cursing at the DCS employee during the interview, court documents said.

The hospital received a phone call around 4:30 p.m. regarding a small child in the parking lot, Fox 59 reported. A police officer found a young boy in the car, watching a movie on cell phones. It was reportedly 86 degrees outside.

Indiana police officer who fatally shot black man resigns, union says, due to stress, media attention

A white Indiana police officer who fatally shot a black man, sparking protests and roiling the presidential campaign of South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, has resigned, the local police union announced Monday.

The Fraternal Order of Police said Sgt. Ryan O’Neill’s resignation from the South Bend Police Department was due to stress and media attention given to last month’s shooting of Eric Logan. The union also pointed to “hateful things said on social media.”

SOUTH BEND POLICE CALL OUT BUTTIGIEG FOR SENDING PIZZA RATHER THAN APOLOGY AFTER RACE COMMENTS

“Sgt. O’Neill did his job and was forced to defend his own life from a convicted felon who was armed with an eight-inch hunting knife,” FOP president Harvey Mills said in a release. “We’re confident that the investigation into the shooting will determine that the action he took was justified based on the law and his training.”

Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski confirmed he received O’Neill’s resignation letter and that his departure was effective immediately.

Authorities have said O’Neill was responding to a report of a person breaking into cars on June 16 and confronted the 54-year-old Logan, and that the officer said he shot Logan after he refused orders to drop a knife.

BUTTIGIEG FACING SCRUTINY AS FAMILY OF BLACK MAN KILLED BY COPS PLANS LAWSUIT AGAINST CITY

A judge has appointed a special prosecutor to investigate the shooting, which authorities said was not recorded by O’Neill’s body camera. Protesters, in the wake of the shooting, have called for police reforms and questioned South Bend’s body camera and use of force policies.

The shooting prompted Buttigieg, who’s seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, to leave the campaign trail for several days to answer questions about public safety and race.

In a statement Monday, Buttigieg said efforts to strengthen trust between law enforcement and community members continue.

“We will await results of the independent criminal investigation, and apply any lessons learned to our work on the future of the Police Department and the community,” he said in the statement.

Logan’s brother, Tyree Bonds, said the family still will pursue a federal lawsuit that alleges O’Neill used excessive deadly force. The city of South Bend is also named in the lawsuit.

Family in shock after toddler daughter of Indiana cop dies in fall from grandfather’s hands on cruise ship, reports say

An Indiana family is in shock after a 1-year-old girl — daughter of a South Bend Police Department officer — slipped from her grandfather’s hands and fell to her death from the 11th story of a cruise ship docked in Puerto Rico, police said Monday.

“They’re in shock,” Police Sgt. Nelson Sotelo told The Associated Press, noting that the family of the child will remain in the U.S. territory until the investigation is complete.

He said officers have not yet been able to interview any relatives.

NAVY SEAL EDDIE GALLAGHER REAFFIRMS HIS INNOCENCE AFTER BEING ACQUITTED OF MURDERING AN ISIS CAPTIVE

The South Bend Police Department said in a statement, as USA Today reported, that the girl was the daughter of Officer Alan Wiegand: “The South Bend Police Department offers its sincerest condolences to Officer Alan Wiegand and his family during this difficult time following the tragic loss of their child while in Puerto Rico. The department asks the community to pray for the entire Wiegand family as they grieve and to respect their privacy.”

Authorities said the girl was traveling with her parents, two siblings and two sets of grandparents aboard the Freedom of the Seas, which docked in Puerto Rico on Sunday after a week-long trip through the Caribbean.

The death occurred Sunday afternoon at the Panamerican dock in the capital of San Juan.

Puerto Rico Ports Authority spokesman José Carmona told the AP that the family was gathered in or near a dining hall on the 11th floor and that the grandfather sat the toddler on the edge of a window and apparently lost his grip. He said officials are investigating whether the window was already opened or if someone had opened it.

Sotelo said the toddler’s maternal grandfather, Salvatore Anello of Valparaiso, Indiana, is under investigation. He said the rest of the family is from Granger, Indiana.

Royal Caribbean Cruises called it a tragic incident and said it was helping the family. A spokeswoman said the ship departed Puerto Rico on Monday for St. Maarten on a new itinerary and declined further comment.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
