Minnesota man charged with murder after dropping infant son on head for being ‘difficult’: report

A Minnesota man was arrested Friday on a charge of killing his 5-month-old son by allegedly dropping him on his head for being fussy and “difficult,” a report said.

Matthew Hoisser, 35, was charged with second-degree murder in the April death of his son, Gus.

The infant died from injuries relating to a skull fracture, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported, citing a Washington County criminal complaint.

Hoisser told investigators he became frustrated when trying to put the baby to sleep because he was crying and “being difficult,” according to the paper. He reportedly said that at one point he purposefully dropped his son headfirst onto the floor.

An autopsy revealed a prior head injury that likely occurred within weeks of the infant’s hospitalization, according to the Pioneer Press. Hoisser reportedly told police he had not always been “super gentle” with the baby.

Hoisser’s bail was set at $350,000 and he was ordered to have no contact with his wife, who is pregnant.

Iranian woman pleads guilty in Minnesota in tech smuggling case

An Iranian woman in Minnesota on Friday pleaded guilty to charges that she stole technology from U.S.-based companies — tech that was then exported to Iran through a fake company in violation of U.S. law and international sanctions.

Negar Ghodskani, 40, and others established a front company in Malaysia to illegally obtain restricted technology from companies in Minnesota and Massachusetts, federal prosecutors said.

Ghodskani was indicted in 2015 in Minnesota and arrested two years later in Australia, becoming the subject of a long extradition fight. She entered her plea before U.S. District Judge Joan Ericksen in Minneapolis.

Her attorney, Robert Richman, said she accepted the plea agreement “because she wanted to accept responsibility and be sentenced.” He said the toll of the long legal tussle was why Ghodskani decided to stop resisting extradition, having arrived in the U.S. last month.

Under an agreement filed Friday, Ghodskani agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the U.S., which carries a maximum potential sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss the other charges.

According to the indictment and the plea agreement, Ghodskani worked for Fana Moj, a Tehran-based company that specializes in broadcast and microwave communications equipment, and supplies microwave radio systems and wireless broadband service in Iran.

Prosecutors said Ghodskani and others established Green Wave Telecommunication in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a front for buying restricted equipment and unlawfully reshipping it to Tehran. The Treasury Department put Fana Moj on a list of banned companies in 2017, accusing it of providing support to the powerful Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Ghodskani’s plea agreement does not include a sentencing recommendation, but the nonbinding federal sentencing guidelines suggest a sentence of 46 to 57 months and a fine of up to $200,000

‘Multiple’ Minnesota counties affected by hep A outbreak; officials say drug users, homeless hit hardest

At least nine counties in Minnesota are experiencing a hepatitis A outbreak, state health officials announced this week.

In a statement Thursday, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) said it has declared an outbreak in “multiple counties among people who use street drugs (injection or non-injection), are experiencing homelessness or unstable housing, or have been recently incarcerated.”

So far, there have been 23 cases of hepatitis A across the nine counties — Pine, Hennepin, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, St. Louis, Washington, Chisago, Dakota and Kandiyohi — involved.

MEASLES EXPOSURE AT UNION STATION IN LOS ANGELES CONFIRMED: HEALTH OFFICIALS

“Thirteen cases have been hospitalized and all have been discharged,” health officials said.

“While initial cases were clustered in east-central Minnesota and had links to each other, more recent cases occurred in counties in other parts of the state. The infection source is not known for some cases, suggesting some community transmission among those in high-risk groups,” they added.

The “highly contagious” liver infection is caused by the hepatitis A virus, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The virus typically spreads when a person eats or drinks something “contaminated by small, undetected amounts of stool from an infected person,” the health agency said.

Those who contract hepatitis A — not to be confused with hepatitis B or C, which are caused by different viruses — may be sick for “several weeks” and usually fully recover, according to the CDC. It is rare to die from the illness, though hepatitis A can cause liver failure and death, typically in those who are 50 years of age or older.

“Declaring an outbreak is a significant step because it allows us to access additional resources to fight the outbreak.”

— Kris Ehresmann

Symptoms include fever, fatigue, dark urine, vomiting, joint pain, and jaundice, among other signs.

While hepatitis A infections do happen in the U.S., it is more common in developing countries where sanitation and hygiene are poor, the CDC says.

The disease is preventable with a vaccine.

BREAST CANCER RISK REDUCED BY SWAPPING RED MEAT FOR POULTRY, STUDY FINDS

“We have been working with our public health partners to respond to individual cases and prevent future cases,” Kris Ehresmann, infectious disease director for MDH, said in a statement. “Declaring an outbreak is a significant step because it allows us to access additional resources to fight the outbreak.”

The state health department announced the outbreak after it began seeing an increase in hepatitis A cases beginning in May.

“These cases had similar risk factors to national outbreaks of hepatitis A that have been occurring since 2016. Nationally, there have been more than 23,600 cases in 29 states. MDH has been monitoring the national outbreaks and conducting enhanced surveillance of hepatitis A since mid-2018 to help quickly identify cases,” state health officials added.

More than a hundred protestors, mostly Jewish activists, blocked the entrance to a facility operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minnesota on Tuesday as part of #NeverAgainIsNow national movement against President Trump’s immigration policy.

At least 150 activists from the Twin Cities chapter of Never Again Is Now blocked two entrances to the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building near the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in Fort Snelling, Minn., Tuesday. Protestors parked cars in the middle of the entrance lanes and stood with picket signs, many of which said “Abolish ICE,” the Star Tribune reported. Police cited 29 people for unlawful assembly when they refused to clear the entrance lanes, Fox 9 reported.

The #NeverAgainIsNow movement aims to make a connection between the “Never Again” slogan of the post-Holocaust era and the treatment of Central American migrants at detention centers along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Protest organizers told Fox 9 that the event was meant to disrupt business operations at ICE offices until detention centers at the border are shut down. They also demanded the defunding of ICE and permanent protection for all undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers.

Rep. Ilhan Omar faces challenge from Chris Kelley, a celebrated Iraq war veteran

When Rep. Ilhan Omar ignited steep controversy in March with her September 11 comments, it was then that “some people did something,” and a longtime cop in her neighborhood decided he needed to do more than just bemoan what he perceived as a shocking trivialization of a terrorist attack that tore through the fabric of his beloved country.

Now, Chris Kelley, who has collected eleven military medals as a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Army and Army Reserves and clocked more than 36,000 hours patrolling the Minnesota streets as a 20-year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Force, has his sights set on knocking Omar from her seat representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in 2020.

“September 11 was a terrible loss of life, not just for police officers and firefighters and other first responders, but 3,000 people and non-combatants died, and to be dismissive of that was an outrage. I could sit and complain or I could do something about it,” Kelley, who is campaigning as an Independent, told Fox News. “And I believe I can be a positive voice in standing up for people in our country, and for our first responders and the people every day on the frontlines.”

BRONX REPUBLICAN PREPARING 2020 RUN AGAINST ‘BOLSHEVIK’ ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ

In his view, current representative Omar has devoted too much time to crafting her “celebrity” than on being of service to the community, which he insists he will serve honorably if elected.

“As former military, I am here to serve and not further my status. I want to do a good job for the people I represent and I don’t have a personal agenda,” noted Kelley, who deployed once during Operation Desert Storm and twice during Operation Iraqi Freedom as an intelligence analyst and also holds an master’s degree in Criminal Justice Leadership from Concordia University in St. Paul. “I’m passionate about service and I just want to be able to continue that.”

He isn’t totally a political rookie. Kelley campaigned for the Republican Senate endorsement in 2016 and, while unsuccessful, it gave the 49-year-old a taste for what Minnesotans wanted and needed.

“Immigration is a big issue right now. I believe in having a secure border; if you don’t have a country you don’t have a border and our border agents are doing a great job, but they are being overwhelmed and Congress isn’t giving them the tools they need,” he said. “But I would also like to see a pathway to citizenship for those under DACA; they couldn’t help they were brought here and need a shot to be able to stay here.”

BERNIE SANDERS SAYS DEMS WILL ‘LOSE THE ELECTION’ IF THEY ‘BECOME OBSESSED’ WITH TRUMP

Kelley stressed that he also remains firmly committed to boosting Medicare, while ensuring private health insurance remains available and the costs are driven down. He also supports term limits on representatives of both the House and the Senate.

Furthermore, as the father of a 5-year-old, he also underscored the importance of addressing the ever-looming elephant in the room.

“A big concern I have is our national debt, and I would like to work on bringing this down. It should be a priority,” Kelley continued. “I have a 5-year-old and this debt will be in our children’s lap.”

And despite the blatant political differences he has with Omar, the local police officer is vowing to run a “positive, fact-based campaign” that won’t entail attacking or ridiculing his opponent.

“I won’t be bringing in controversy and scandal. I will be bringing firsthand knowledge of the things that I know are going on in the community as an officer. I see a lot every day – the homelessness, the opioid crisis; I want to bring these things to the forefront and put some ideas on the table on how to deal with them,” Kelley added. “I want to do anything I can to make people’s lives better; I just want to sit and listen to people and make some positive change.”

Minnesota newborn died from intoxication after mom unexpectedly gave birth following drinking ‘bender’: prosecutors

A Minnesota woman was charged with manslaughter Wednesday after prosecutors say her infant died from intoxication last year after she went on a drinking “bender” while pregnant.

Rianna Marie Cameron, 29, was charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter after her newborn daughter was found unresponsive inside the family home on December 30, WCCO reported.

INFANT TWINS FOUND DEAD, ‘FOAMING AT THE MOUTH,’ IN BACK OF CAR: POLICE

According to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County Court, a man called the Rogers Police Department at around 8:39 p.m. to report that his child had been found unresponsive and that her mother, Cameron, was found lying nearby, disoriented. The two were still connected by an umbilical cord, suggesting that Cameron had unexpectedly given birth to the infant.

Rianna Marie Cameron, 29, was charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter after her newborn daughter was found unresponsive inside the family home on December 30, police say.

When police arrived they found the newborn purple and not breathing. They began CPR until paramedics arrived. The baby was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead an hour after police first received the 911 call.

Prosecutors allege in the complaint obtained by WCCO that Cameron told police she had been on a “bender” that day and had been drinking since 5 p.m. In that length of time, she allegedly consumed about a liter of whiskey.

She was 34-weeks pregnant at the time. An autopsy report of the infant showed that the child’s blood alcohol content was .234, WFAA reported. Cameron also registered a BAC of .21, nearly three times the legal limit permitted for driving.

Police said there were two other unattended children in the home at the time, a 2-year-old and a 3-year-old.

Cameron reportedly has a history of alcohol abuse – in 2015 child protection services got involved over reports of prenatal alcohol exposure. She went to treatment several times, the latest was just 15 days before her infant died.

Minnesota family received a big scare on Thursday when they realized their two-and-a-half-year-old son was nowhere to be found, only to find out the young explorer left home on his toy tractor, ending up at a local fair two blocks away.

The fearless youngster, Kenneth Allen, traveled at a blistering one mile per hour on his toy John Deere, attracted by the sounds and lights of the Chisago County Fair in Rush City.

Scared for Kenneth’s life and unsure of his whereabouts, mother Lynn told Fox 9 she called 911 and Chisago County Sergeant Jason Foster was assigned to the case.

“Me and my partner converged on the area and sure enough there he was on his little John Deere battery-powered tractor,” Foster told the news outlet.

The call happened to be their first of the night, according to a Facebook post by the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office. They added that the child was easy to spot due to his bright red hair.

The post added that Kenneth “was reunited with Dad who promptly suspended his son’s license by removing the battery from it.”

“I was glad to see him, but the first thing I did was pop the hood, pulled his battery and said you’re grounded,” father Kristopher Allen told Fox 9.

Despite the discipline, Allen understands kids will be kids and says he’s not mad at his little Magellan. Kenneth’s driving privileges were suspended for just a week.

“I don’t think I have to worry about him speeding on the city streets for a week here,” said Foster.

Max Kepler ties MLB record with 5 consecutive home runs against Trevor Bauer

Minnesota Twins right fielder Max Kepler tied a Major League Baseball record on Saturday by hitting a home run in five straight at-bats against one pitcher.

The unlucky pitcher: Trevor Bauer of the Cleveland Indians.

It ties the longest streak for home runs in consecutive at-bats against one pitcher, with the previous instance occurring in (2003-04) when Carlos Delgado did it against Jorge Sosa. Before 2004, you have to go back 40 years earlier when Frank Howard launched five home runs against Bob Hendley between (1963-64), according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Because the previous two instances happened over two seasons, Kepler’s record stands as the only person to accomplish the feat in a single season.

Kepler, 26, connected on two home runs in his first two at-bats against Bauer on Saturday night, after homering three times off the Cleveland pitcher in Minnesota’s win on June 6.

Kepler led off Saturday’s game with a home run in just the third pitch of the contest.

The next inning he smashed another solo home run into right-center field, giving the Twins a three-run lead and tieing the MLB record.

The Twins slugger finally cooled off in his next at-bat, with Bauer striking out Kepler, the thorn in his side, during the fourth inning.

After the game, Bauer didn’t have an answer as to why Kepler has been so successful against him this season.

“I don’t know,” Bauer told ESPN. “How do you explain it? It’s just one of those baseball things. He’s just locked in against me for whatever reason. It won’t be that way forever. He’ll cool down, and he’ll go through a 0-for-10 with seven punchouts or whatever and miss pitches. It’s just one of those things right now.”

Kepler would eventually go 2-for-5 in the 6-2 Twins victory, giving Minnesota a comfortable 7.5 game lead over the Indians in the American League Central. After the game, Kepler didn’t put any weight on his accomplishments.

“Every pitcher is the same,” Kepler told ESPN. “I have the same approach. I just try to simplify it when I go up there.”

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters he’d never seen anything like what happened on Saturday.

“It’s unfathomable that it’s happening right in front of our eyes,” Baldelli said.

Minneapolis homeowner forced to pay city $20G for water line repair on other side of street: report

A Minneapolis homeowner who found his water line leaking last month must pay the city $20,000 out of pocket to have it fixed, according to a Monday report.

Dan Wilke said he noticed water coming out of his front lawn while doing yard work six weeks ago and called the city to let them know. He said he assumed he owned “from the valve to my house.”

But the water line, it turned out, was on the other side of the street, cutting beneath four traffic lanes. Thanks to a 27-year-old city ordinance, Wilke must pay for the replacement of all lead segments of that water line, a job that will cost upwards of $21,000.

“The bids came in at $17,000 to $21,000,” Wilke told Minneapolis’ WCCO. “That’s a little bit of a shock, to say the least.”

Though the lead line isn’t leaking, another piece of the line is, which means Wilke is responsible for “fixing everything under Central Avenue,” he said.

Wilke is now lobbying city officials to amend the nearly 30-year ordinance, given that any homeowner along major roads “could be subject to a $20,000 charge from one little leak in their water line.”

“I would really like Minneapolis to take responsibility for what is under their property,” Wilke said.
