Giant leatherback sea turtle nests on Florida beach in broad daylight: ‘A rare occurrence’

A leatherback sea turtle gave Florida beachgoers a rare sight last week when she was spotted nesting in broad daylight.

The Loggerhead Marinelife Center took pictures of the large female laying in the sand on Singer Island Beach in South Florida. The center said it’s not known why some turtles choose to nest during the day, noting that it’s “a rare occurrence.”

RARE EASTERN BLACK RHINOCEROS BORN AT CHICAGO ZOO, OFFICIALS SAY

A rehab technician took measurements of the leatherback, the largest sea turtle species currently living, through a permit from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the organization said. It also warned that witnesses should keep their distance from a nesting female so she can lay her eggs safely and successfully.

While the size and weight of the turtle weren’t immediately clear, a leatherback can grow to more than seven feet in length and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds, according to National Geographic.

The leatherback gets its name from its unique shell of “tough, rubbery skin,” according to the Sea Turtle Conservancy. It’s the only type of sea turtle that doesn’t have a hard shell. Its diet consists largely of jellyfish and other soft-bodied marine life, the group said.

The species is considered vulnerable to extinction, threatened by extreme egg collection and fisheries bycatch, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Florida couple left veteran, 82, suicidal after emptying his bank account, police say

A Florida woman and her boyfriend were arrested last week for scamming an 82-year-old veteran out of his life savings to fuel their drug habit after the man told a crisis line he wanted to kill himself over his empty bank account, authorities said.

Jessica Henry, 31, and Gregory Dushan, 28, coerced more than $50,000, along with property, from the U.S. Coast Guard veteran, DeLand police said in a news release. The couple allegedly spent more than $500 of the money on drugs daily.

The 82-year-old victim called the Veterans Crisis Center and told the agency that his bank account had a negative balance and he felt the only solution was to end his life, the release said. The center immediately called police.

The victim, who hasn’t been identified, told officers that he first met Henry about three years ago. He started giving the woman money after she claimed she wasn’t able to feed her children and didn’t have transportation to take them to school, the release said.

Henry contacted the victim again six months ago, claiming she needed $350 a day to pay for urine tests as part of her probation for a recent arrest, WKMG-TV reported, citing an arrest report. Dushan, pretending to be Henry’s probation officer, also called the victim daily to demand between $150 and $1,000.

Dushan threated to seize the victim’s car and throw him in jail if the demands weren’t met, police said. The veteran eventually gave his car to Dushan. Police said they have since recovered the vehicle.

Henry and Dushan were charged with exploiting an elderly person between amounts of $20,000 and $100,000. Dushan was separately charged with impersonating a correction/probation officer. The couple could face more charges, police said.

A DeLand police spokesman told WKMG that the department is looking into ways to help the 82-year-old, who has been unable to pay his rent because of the incident.

Florida Lottery winner of $1M among suspects rounded up in major drug bust: reports

A little more than a year ago, Karlee Harbst was the smiling winner of a $1 million prize in the Florida Lottery. She had even won a $100 prize a week earlier.

The money was coming at a great time too, because Harbst was reportedly pregnant.

But last week, the 27-year-old Port Orange woman was among more than 20 suspects apprehended by police in a major drug bust, according to reports. She was reportedly charged with solicitation to deliver heroin and unlawful use of a two-way communication device, and made her first court appearance Friday in connection with the case.

Her lottery winnings had marked an opportunity for Harbst to turn her life around after a criminal history that included previous arrests for drug possession, theft, contempt of court and driving with a suspended license, according to the Miami Herald.

But instead, she allegedly got involved with the operators of an extensive drug operation that peddled in heroin, fentanyl and cocaine, according to Florida law enforcement authorities.

“These are not nice people,” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood told the Daytona Beach News-Journal last week, referring to the alleged ringleaders and others who were arrested.

Authorities hope that the bust, dubbed “Operation: Smooth Criminal,” will help reduce drug traffic in an area that saw some 300 drug-related deaths between 2017 and 2018, the News-Journal reported.

Volusia County, which includes Daytona Beach, lies on the Atlantic coast of Florida, northeast of Orlando.

Back when Harbst won the lottery, she appeared on local TV and said she bought the ticket because of its number, the Herald reported.

“When I saw the ticket was number 24, I had to get it. Twenty-four is my favorite number,” she reportedly told Orlando’s WESH-TV.

After last week’s drug bust, according to authorities, it looks like Harbst’s number may be up again.

DeSantis: Florida ‘cannot accommodate’ influx of migrants expected for processing

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis was caught off guard Thursday when he was notified by U.S. Border Patrol that hundreds of migrants from the Mexican border would be moved into two South Florida counties.

DeSantis, who is close to President Trump, especially since the president’s endorsement helped propel him to the top in the 2018 gubernatorial race, said he would complain to him about the agency’s decision.

“This was not something that came down from the White House. This was something that came out of the agency. Sometimes this stuff happens. It’s gonna ultimately be something I’m going to have to talk to the president about,” DeSantis said Friday during a press conference noting that he heard the new plans through the media and made a call to the president on Thursday.

In two weeks, Broward and Palm Beach County may start receiving migrants, even after DeSantis recently signed a bill banning sanctuary cities and pledged to help federal immigration authorities control illegal immigrants trickling across the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I think it will tax our resources, the schools, the health care, law enforcement, state agencies,” DeSantis said.

The Palm Beach County Association of Chiefs of Police wrote a letter Thursday complaining to the governor that an influx in migrants would have a “direct effect on the potential homeless numbers and present challenges to our school district.”

The surge in migrants across the border has taxed the Texas border facilities, pushing them to move migrants elsewhere for processing. Processed migrants are given a court date and are allowed to stay with family members in the state they are expected to appear.

FLORIDA LEGISLATURE PASSES GOP BAN ON SANCTUARY-CITY POLICIES; DESANTIS EXPECTED TO SIGN INTO LAW

Still, DeSantis insists he will remain “cooperative” with measures to crack down on illegal immigration, even if parts of Florida have been designated for migrants going through processing to reside.

Alligator bites bigger, bellowing gator in Florida, video shows: ‘It was exciting to see’

A huge, bellowing alligator was jumped and bitten by another gator in Florida, a video shows.

Seana Sasnett was filming the alligator — along with a second one beside it — at Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Fla., Wednesday morning when a third alligator jumped into the frame.

8-FOOT ALLIGATOR KNOCKS DOWN WRANGLER BESIDE TEXAS HIGHWAY, VIDEO SHOWS

“I was just filming the two alligators bellowing and didn’t even see the third one until he came in with his mouth opened and bit him,” Sasnett told FOX 13. “It was exciting to see.”

In the short video, which Sasnett posted to Facebook, after the bigger alligator gets bitten, the smaller gator jumped to the side, away from the splashing water of the two fighting reptiles.

Sasnett then posted a second video, which shows the gators after their short fight.

They can be seen swimming calmly in the water, before the larger gator went back to bellowing, facing the direction of the gator who swam away when the fight began.

The gator that started the fight can be seen going under the water before it disappears.

SNAKE FIGHTS TO ESCAPE ALLIGATOR’S JAW, PHOTOGRAPHS SHOW: ‘IT WAS A HARD FOUGHT BATTLE’

Alligators bellowing are often a sign of mating season, according to the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens in Naples, Fla., though gators do bellow all year round.

“Alligators also may bellow to communicate size to each other,” the zoo said in a Facebook post showing some of their gators making the noise in April. “While both males and females bellow, males can reach a lower frequency.”

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), alligators begin courting in early April and mate in May or June.

Aside from roaming farther from their lagoons, warmer temperatures also rev up alligators’ metabolism, making them more active and aggressive as they hunt for prey and mate.

The FWC recommends not swimming during dusk or dawn — an alligator’s most active hours — keeping animals on a leash and away from water and keeping a safe distance if they come into contact with the large creature.

An 800-pound alligator named “Mighty Mike” is calling an Arizona aquarium his new home, making him what some believe is the largest gator outside Florida.

The 14-foot long reptile arrived at the OdySea Aquarium near Scottsdale on Monday, and he will make his debut to visitors on Friday, according to a post on Instagram from the aquarium.

HUGE 3-LEGGED ALLIGATOR HOBBLES ACROSS FLORIDA GOLF COURSE, APPEARS AT WOMAN’S HOME

Mighty Mike — who was captured in 2000 — will spend a year at the aquarium as an “ambassador” for alligators, teaching visitors about the shrinking habitats of the reptiles, according to AZ Central.

“We want people to be excited to see him,” Dave Peranteau, OdySea’s director of animal care and conservation, told the outlet. “But we also want to raise awareness of the importance of conservation, that animals like Mike will continue to exist only if we take measures that ensure their survival.”

Mighty Mike was transported to OdySea in an 11-foot wooden crate stored in the back of a van with his handler Bruce Shwedick, AZ Central reported. Their 2,200-mile road trip took them five days from the Florida-based alligator farm called Gatorama.

The alligator and Shwedick have traveled thousands of miles to talk about gator conservation at parks, aquariums and zoos, according to the outlet, ever since Shwedick rescued Mike from being euthanized.

The outlet reported that in 2000, Mighty Mike refused to leave a boat ramp around Lake Talquin near Tallahassee, Fla., so Shwedick decided to adopt the massive reptile. Shwedick eventually went on to co-found the Crocodilian Conservation Center of Florida, according to the outlet.

Though they have a long friendship — Shwedick even told AZ Central his voice calms Mighty Mike — the alligator handler knows to stay careful.

“If he were ever to get a grip on my thumb, he could drag me one step at a time, very slowly, underwater. And there would be nothing I could do,” he said.

It may not be uncommon to see an alligator in the Sunshine State, but one Florida woman had an unusual experience when she saw a three-legged gator hobbling toward her.

Lori Greenberg of Bonita Springs caught the moment on camera when the gator, which appeared to be missing a leg, came toward her across the green at the Bonita National Golf Course and Country Club. At one point, the gator appears to stop and rest, video of the event shows.

“3 legged alligator coming to take a rest outside my lanai. Yikes!” she later wrote on Facebook, sharing both the footage and an up-close shot of the huge reptile.

The gator then “stared inside for hours,” she said, according to Sputnik News.

“Wow that’s a little too close for comfort!” one person commented on Greenberg’s video.

“That’s quite possible scarier than a four-legged alligator! Officially creeped out,” wrote another.

“The poor thing — I’m sure it’s exhausted and needs the rest!” said a third.

It’s not currently clear what happened to the gator or if Greenberg called local animal control for assistance in removing the prehistoric-looking creature.

The news comes after a “massive” gator was recently removed from beside a children’s school bus stop in the state — but not before it performed a so-called “death roll.”

Lori Greenberg did not immediately return Fox News’ request for additional comment on Wednesday.

Florida governor confirms 2 counties were hacked in 2016 election

Westlake Legal Group AP19134656020276 Florida governor confirms 2 counties were hacked in 2016 election Vandana Rambaran fox-news/us/us-regions/southeast/florida fox-news/us fox-news/politics/elections fox news fnc/us fnc article ae69945f-613e-560f-acb4-6736e4d270b7

Two Florida counties were hacked by Russians during the 2016 elections, but the security breach was “nothing that affected the vote count,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“I recently met with the FBI concerning the election issue mentioned in the Mueller report,” DeSantis said. “Two Florida counties experienced intrusion into the supervisor-of-election networks. There was no manipulation.”

DeSantis’ statements confirm findings detailed in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 elections. The report said “the FBI believes that this operation enabled [Russian military intelligence] to gain access to the network of at least one Florida county government” during the 2016 election.

The governor was briefed by the FBI on Friday and told that, in fact, two counties were penetrated. He said he could not say which counties were affected because of a nondisclosure agreement with the FBI.

MARCO RUBIO SAYS HACKERS INFILTRATED FLORIDA COUNTY ELECTIONS SYSTEM, WERE ‘IN A POSITION’ TO ALTER VOTER ROLL DATA

In July 2018, Mueller’s office indicted at least 12 people believed to be working on behalf of the Russians, alleging that hackers used a fake email account that mimicked that of the Florida-based company VR Systems, which provides several Florida counties with voter registration systems, “to send over 100 spearphishing emails to organizations and personnel involved in administering elections in numerous Florida counties,” according to the indictment.

Hackers may have been able to gain access to voter information that is already a matter of public record, but the data breach did not affect the actual vote tallies, DeSantis said.

“The two counties at issue here, the FBI was working with them in 2016, to identify and to take whatever actions happened,” DeSantis said, indicating that the two counties knew about the security threat prior to the 2016 election.

Ahead of the midterms in 2018, Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., who was up for re-election at the time, warned that Russians had “penetrated certain counties in the state and they now have free rein to move about,” he said to The Tampa Bay Times.

Nelson was defeated in the Senate race by Gov. Rick Scott, R-Fla., who denied knowing about any such security threat and said Nelson’s claims only stoked fears of Russian meddling.

The former governor, who held office at the time of the cybermeddling, will be briefed by the FBI on Wednesday.

Body of Florida woman missing for nearly six years discovered inside freezer at scrap metal warehouse

The body of a Florida woman who had been missing for nearly six years was found last month inside the freezer of a scrap metal business, the owner said Friday.

Lilian Argueta opened the freezer and screamed when she found the body, she told the Sun-Sentinel. She said she originally thought the body was a “witch or a mannequin.”

The body was later identified by Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office as 29-year-old Heather Lacey, who vanished in November 2013, according to the newspaper.
