American Airlines mechanic shared ‘disturbing’ ISIS videos, told agents he had ‘evil side,’ prosecutors say

An American Airlines mechanic accused of sabotaging a plane in July reportedly told arresting agents he had an “evil side,” a nefarious persona prosecutors sought to expose Wednesday as they presented alleged evidence of his Islamist sympathies — and aspirations — at a bail hearing in Miami.

Prosecutors said Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani allegedly displayed support for ISIS by making statements about wishing Allah would use “divine powers” to harm non-Muslims and sharing ISIS videos on his cellphone — which he allowed the FBI to search. One of the videos showed a person being shot in the head, according to prosecutors.

AMERICAN AIRLINES MECHANIC ACCUSED OF SABOTAGING PLANE DENIED BAIL OVER POSSIBLE TERRORIST TIES

Federal investigators said they also learned that Alani lied about taking a trip to Iraq in March to visit his brother and also sent $700 to someone in Iraq. Alani allegedly told an American Airlines co-worker in June his brother was kidnapped and became a member of the terrorist organization.

Alani, 60, worked as a mechanic for the airline when he allegedly sabotaged a Nassau-bound Boeing 737 with 150 passengers and crew aboard at Miami International Airport over stalled labor negotiations.

Prosecutors said Alani glued styrofoam inside the nose of the aircraft that disabled a part used to gauge airspeed and other critical flight data. Pilots detected the issue before takeoff, and a subsequent inspection discovered the problem.

Airport surveillance captured Alani, who walks with a limp, working on the plane’s nose for about seven minutes. He was identified by co-workers.

After his arrest earlier this month, he told agents he acted “out of my evil side” and “wanted to do something to delay” the plane “to get overtime” for maintenance repairs, Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Medetis told the judge Wednesday.

AMERICAN AIRLINES MECHANIC ACCUSED OF SABOTAGE WAS FIRED BY ALASKA AIRLINES OVER MISTAKES: REPORT

While Alani is not yet charged with a terror-related crime, Medetis said the potential links to the Islamic State give rise to the possibility that his actions had a darker purpose beyond what he insisted was a labor issue.

The judge ultimately denied Alani bail.

The defense has argued that prosecutors can’t prove Alani intentionally put people in danger. They said Alani was an experienced mechanic who knew the alleged sabotage would ground the plane before takeoff.

However, Alani had been fired from Alaska Airlines in 2008 over several maintenance mistakes, some that led to Federal Aviation Administration investigations, according to court documents from his unsuccessful discrimination lawsuit that Business Insider obtained.

Alani was fired after the incident and the Federal Aviation Administration revoked his aircraft mechanic certificate.

He is expected to enter a plea Friday on charges of willfully damaging, destroying or disabling an aircraft.

Dog alerts family to fire, but doesn’t make it out alive: ‘He was a part of the fire alarm, he was barking’

A beloved dog did all he could to save his family from their burning Florida home — even giving his life, his owner said.

“Zippy,” a Jack Russell Terrier, alerted the Butler family when a fire broke out in the attic of the house, located in Bradenton, around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire alarm “only lasted a short ‘beep beep'” before the house “was already on fire,” homeowner Leroy Butler told WTVT. So Zippy stepped in, sounding his own alarm to notify his those closest to him.

“He was back and forth. He was from bed to bed, back and forth,” Butler said of Zippy, adding the dog was barking as loudly as possible. “He was a part of the fire alarm, he was barking,” he added to WTSP.

The Butler family was able to get out of the home in time, but Zippy didn’t make it. Butler said he tried going back for him, but the fire was too big.

“The floor in the living room was all on fire so there was nowhere for him to run out. Even if the smoke was this high. He was a short little dog,” Butler said. “There was nowhere for him to go.”

Local fire officials said the fire spread from the attic near an air conditioning unit. It’s unclear how it started.

Adopted for the Butlers by Leroy’s father, Zippy was described as “a good dog.” His owner said: “He did his job, we rescued him, and I guess he returned the favor.”

“He would let me know if someone was outside. With the smoke, he still did his job. That’s just one thing and one person that I couldn’t save and one person I couldn’t get to,” Butler said.

Pittsburgh Pirates’ Felipe Vazquez met alleged victim at ballpark, visited her at home: report

All-Star pitcher Felipe Vazquez, who was arrested Tuesday and charged with multiple felony child sex charges, reportedly met the alleged victim at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park and took pictures with her outside the bullpen.

Vazquez, the closer for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was in custody following an investigation into an alleged inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old girl, officials said. He was charged with statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors and a misdemeanor count of indecent assault of a person under 16 years old.

The 28-year-old met with the alleged victim at the Pirates’ home ballpark after she contacted the pitcher on social media beginning their communication, according to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Fla., incident report obtained by CBS Pittsburgh.

Vazquez reportedly drove to the alleged victim’s home in Pennsylvania on at least one occasion. She accused the pitcher of pulling down her pants while they were in his vehicle and attempted to have sex with her, CBS Pittsburgh reported, citing the incident report.

The girl, now 15, allegedly received a text message from Vazquez in July in which he was performing a sexual act. He also texted the girl to ask if she wanted to meet for a sexual encounter at the end of the baseball season, police said.

Vazquez’s face was not visible in the sexual images sent to the alleged victim and authorities were able to identify him by matching tattoos in the picture against the tattoos of Vazquez they discovered on the internet, the Associated Press reported, citing an affidavit.

The alleged victim’s mother discovered the messages with Vazquez and told the pitcher he was talking with a minor, according to the affidavit. Authorities matched the evidence to Vazquez’s phone number.

The pitcher was taken into custody by Pennsylvania State Police and was charged stemming from an investigation in Florida. He was later charged in Westmoreland County, which is located east of Pittsburgh.

Vazquez was denied bond as the judge said she believed he was as a flight risk, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Vazquez has since been placed on paid administrative leave.

“We take this matter, and these charges in particular, extremely seriously,” Pirates president Frank Connelly said in a statement.

Pirates starting pitcher Chris Archer commented on Vazquez’s arrest Tuesday.

Florida couple had sex inside patrol car after arrest for riding bicycles while drunk: reports

A couple arrested in Florida late Friday for riding their bicycles while intoxicated made matters worse for themselves when they started having sex in the back of the patrol car, authorities say.

A sheriff’s deputy spotted Aaron Seth Thomas, 31, and Megan Lynn Mondanaro, 35, narrowly avoid being hit by a car when they rode their bikes across a road in Fernandina Beach, according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

One of their bikes lacked lights while the other had only a headlight, plus the couple had been drinking at a nearby bar, the sheriff’s office told the Florida Times-Union of Jacksonville. In addition, Thomas had seven cans of beer in his backpack, the report said.

The boy, identified only as Aedric, was being watched by his grandmother Sunday in Pace, near Pensacola, when she briefly took her eyes off of him to use the restroom, the boy’s mother said at a press conference. While Aedric was unsupervised, the child wandered out of the front door and into the woods near his home.

A Miami swingers club has been ordered to pay nearly $1 million to a group of models after the sex joint used photos of them in advertisements without their permission, a report said Monday.

ADULT-CONTENT WEBSITE ANNOUNCES BID FOR MIAMI ARENA

Miami Velvet — the “most famous swingers club” in the city, according to the Miami Herald — used photos of at least 32 models to advertise on fliers, social media accounts, and on the club’s webpage for a number of years, the Herald reported.

A judge ruled in favor of the women in 2017, when they argued their images were used to “class up” the sex club, which they said features “unhealthy and unsanitary” activities, the Herald reported.

On Monday, a jury awarded the women $892,500 — far below the $5.3 million they were seeking, according to the report.

The plaintiffs included model Joanna Krupa, who appeared on “The Real Housewives of Miami,” along with “Deal or no Deal” model Cora Skinner and former Boca Raton police officer Jaume Longoria.

“I think the jury’s decision was fair and I think they took into account that these women were entitled to say yes or no to the job, and ultimately, they wouldn’t have said yes,” lawyer Naim Surgeon, who represented the women, told the Herald on Monday.

“Did you do anything in the bathroom?” Sowell asks his daughter, who claims she didn’t do anything, before admitting to putting on some “yip-tick.”

“What’d you put on?” the father asks in a video posted to Facebook in August, to which the child replies, while motioning applying lipstick: “Yip-tick on.”

Failing to convince her father, the girl says the lipstick was hers. When asked if she asked permission to put the lipstick on, the girl says she simply asked herself.

Florida ‘porch pirate’ caught on camera stealing package while little girl watches

A woman was caught on camera allegedly stealing a package from a Florida home — with a young child, who followed along, watching her.

The unidentified “porch pirate,” as described by the Tampa Police Department, was captured on home surveillance video Sept. 7.

The woman is seen walking up to the front porch of the house, located in the neighborhood’s Audubon Drive, and taking a package that’s seemingly hidden behind a pillar of the porch.

While she takes the package, a young child is seen following closely behind. The two soon leave the house, heading toward the street’s sidewalk and walking away.
