Oldest living American WWII veteran celebrates 110th birthday

Lawrence Brooks — a man considered to be the nation’s oldest living World War II veteran — celebrated a huge milestone in Louisiana last week: his 110th birthday.

Brooks, born on Sept. 12, 1909, was honored on Thursday at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Spotted with a bright lipstick kiss on his cheek at the event, Brooks served in the 91st Engineer Battalion stationed in New Guinea and then the Philippines — a predominately African-American unit of the U.S. Army.

The 110-year-old, who served between 1940 and 1945, was a servant to three white officers and his daily routine included cleaning their sheets and uniforms and shining their shoes. He attained the rank of Private 1st Class during the war.

Brooks’ newfound title comes after the death of Richard Overton, previously the oldest living WWII veteran. Formerly a member of the U.S. Army, Overton died in December at age 112.

The museum has been celebrating Brooks’ birthdays since his 105th, in 2014, according to The Times-Picayune and The New Orleans Advocate.

“We absolutely love Mr. Brooks,” the museum’s vice president, Peter Crean, told the news outlet. “We’ve told him, ‘As long as you keep having birthdays, we are going to keep having birthday parties for you here.'”

“We consider him ‘our veteran,'” Crean said.

Brooks, who uses a walker, is blind in one eye and has poor vision in the other. He does suffer from low blood pressure and dehydration, but his hearing, however, is good, and he’s never suffered from any major diseases or cancers.

“I’ve started to think about not having many birthdays left. But I’m not worried about it, because God has let me live this long already,” Brooks said. “I think it’s because I’ve always liked people so much. Oh yes, I do.”

McDonald’s employee filmed choking, punching customer over alleged complaint about cold fries

A McDonald’s employee has been terminated for getting fired up over some fries.

The worker, who was employed at a location in New Orleans, was recently filmed choking and punching a customer who was allegedly trying to complain about his french fries being cold, and requesting a new order.

WOMAN FINDS HEARTWARMING NOTE ON MCDONALD’S RECEIPT

“The behavior seen in this video is not what I expect from my employees,” said Chris Bardell, the owner and operator of the location, in a statement McDonald’s gave to Fox News. “The crew member involved in this incident is no longer employed by my organization.”

Footage of the incident, taken Saturday, shows the worker telling the customer to “get out” before another employee leads him away from the confrontation. The customer, however, is seen following behind, presumably to continue complaining about his order, at which point the worker turns around, places his hands around the man’s neck, and punches him in the head.

The customer, who was visiting New Orleans with his wife at the time of the incident, admitted that he did have an “attitude” when he complained, but he didn’t feel it warranted violence, WWL-TV reported.

“The customer is always right, even if he’s wrong,” the unidentified man told the outlet. He added that he didn’t fight back even though he knew he would be able to take out his attacker, because he “didn’t want to leave my wife alone in New Orleans if I went to jail.”

Following the incident, officers arrived on the scene, but no charges were filed, according to NOLA.com.

The customer, meanwhile, claims he still wants to see the employee “in jail.”

The New Orleans police are said to be investigating the incident.

Sen. John Kennedy: ‘Bill of Rights not an a la carte menu,’ Second Amendment as important as all others

The Second Amendment should be respected the same as all the other constitutional rights, according to Sen. John Kennedy.

While rights are not absolute, any piece of legislation limiting Second Amendment rights should have empirical evidence proving its projected worth and effectiveness, the Louisiana Republican claimed Wednesday on “The Story.

“Here is my starting point, Martha: I believe that love is the answer, but I also own a handgun just in case — in fact I own several. Shotguns too,” Kennedy told host Martha MacCallum. “That’s my right under our Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is not an a la carte menu. The Second Amendment is just as important as all the other Amendments.”

REPS. OCASIO-CORTEZ, CRENSHAW CLASH ON GUN CONTROL: ‘THIS IS AMERICA OUTSIDE NYC’

Responding to gun control proponents like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. — who recently sparred on Twitter with Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, on the issue — Kennedy said gun laws must be proven effective.

More from Media

“Some of my colleagues argue that by further curtailing our Second Amendment rights, they can enhance public safety,” he said. “Fine, the burden of proof is on them. I’m willing to have that debate, but I want the bacon without the sizzle — no speculation, no false comfort, no pulling stuff out of your orifices.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee member said “causal, scientific evidence” that the particular gun law proposal will curb or prevent mass shootings is necessary in that regard.

CASTRO VOWS TO ‘MAXIMIZE EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY’ TO PASS GUN CONTROL IF ELECTED

“Our rights are not absolute,” he added. “Our rights can be curtailed in the interest of public safety. All I’m saying is… prove it.”

Crenshaw drew Ocasio-Cortez’s ire earlier Wednesday after posting criticism of universal background checks.

Linking to a news story about a young woman firing at attempted robbers, Crenshaw said the situation provided the reason for the Second Amendment’s existence.

“Side note: With universal background checks, I wouldn’t be able to let my friends borrow my handgun when they travel alone like this. We would make felons out of people just for defending themselves,” he added.

In response, Ocasio-Cortez claimed people Crenshaw might lend his guns to in that situation, “have likely abused their spouses.”

“Why are you ‘lending’ guns to people unsupervised who can’t pass a basic background check?” she asked. “… Why on earth would you do that?”

Louisiana boy, 5, brings cocaine to school, police say; 2 adults arrested

A man and woman in Louisiana were arrested after a kindergartner brought three bags of cocaine to a New Orleans-area school Tuesday, investigators said.

A teacher called a school resource officer after the 5-year-old student was seen holding a bag of white powder, later discovered to be cocaine. The officer found two additional bags of the drug, Slidell, La., police said in a Facebook post.

“Throughout the investigation, it was apparent the child had no knowledge about the drugs,” police said.

Detectives searched the child’s home and arrested Angelica Stanley, 23, and Ellis Cousin, 51, after more cocaine allegedly turned up inside.

“It’s a terrible thing but the silver lining in all this is that the teacher did a phenomenal job being alert, notifying the SRO [school resource officer], taking immediate action,” Slidell police Det. Daniel Seuzeneau told FOX 8 of New Orleans. “God only knows what would have happened if this child would have ingested the cocaine, if another student would have ingested the cocaine, I mean it would have been terrible.”

Kathleen Blanco, Louisiana governor during Hurricane Katrina, dead at 76

Former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who led her state during the horrors of Hurricane Katrina, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer. She was 76.

The office of Gov. John Bel Edwards confirmed Blanco’s death. She had been battling a rare form of cancer that had spread to her liver.

The Democrat who served in state government offices for more than two decades had announced in December 2017 that she was being treated for the incurable melanoma. “I’ve had an extraordinarily full life,” she said in her announcement of her terminal condition. A devout Catholic, Blanco thanked Louisiana residents for their “abiding love” during her years in public service and called it an “honor and a blessing” to lead the state during the response to Katrina and Hurricane Rita weeks later.

Blanco was the first woman to hold the post of Louisiana governor; she took office in 2004. Her career was largely defined by Katrina 20 months later, in August 2005. The storm devastated New Orleans and resulted in over 1,400 deaths and thousands being displaced.

Local leaders, as well as Blanco, were criticized for what was considered an unprepared and inadequate response. She shouldered much of the blame as pictures of flooded streets and people stranded on rooftops made news worldwide.

She said the situation was made worse by a Republican-led White House looking to shift the blame for its disaster-response failures.

“I wasn’t aware in those days that there was some intentional stalling going on in Washington,” Blanco said in a 2015 interview with USA Today Network. “I felt like I had to ask more times than should have been necessary.

“Katrina certainly left its mark and Rita left her mark on Louisiana. It made us tougher people though. It made us stronger,” the former governor said this past July.

Her political career never recovered and she decided against seeking a second term.

“She was a woman of abiding faith and unconditional love for her family, Louisiana and those she served,” Edwards said Sunday speaking next to first lady Donna Edwards, as the News Star newspaper reported. “Louisiana has lost a champion. Donna and I have lost a friend.”

A former high school teacher, Blanco served 24 years in elected office, making her way through state politics while rarely making waves. She first served in the state House in 1984 and eventually served as lieutenant governor from 1996 to 2004 before being elected governor.

She was also the first women to serve on the Louisiana Public Service Commission.

She earned praise for raising public school teacher salaries during her tenure, as supporters said she ran a corruption-free government.

During her final months, Blanco described feeling “blessed by God” and said it was a “wonderful time for me, even though it is a time of a kind of countdown.”

Tributes poured in for a local FOX reporter in New Orleans who was killed in a small plane crash Friday while doing a story about a stunt pilot.

Nancy Parker, 53, was a wife and mother of three who had worked as an anchor and reporter at FOX 8 in New Orleans for 23 years.

She was remembered by NFL quarterback Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints, as well as Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and others around the state who admired the journalist and her work.

The pilot, identified by the station as Franklin J.P. Augustus, also died in the crash.

Fox 8 officials confirmed the news of the passing of their “longtime colleague and friend.”

Brees, himself a fixture in the city since 2006, wrote in a Twitter post that Parker was a “beloved reporter & news anchor.”

Saints owner Gayle Benson wrote on Facebook that Parker “fostered great trust with both those who she covered and with her viewers.” Benson included in her post a photo of herself with Parker.

Gov. Edwards tweeted that Parker told “stories that mattered to the people of our state.

“Please join your prayers to mine and Donna’s for Nancy’s husband and three children as they come to terms with this shocking loss,” the governor added.

“Suits” actor Wendell Pierce, a native of New Orleans, said he was “deeply saddened by the untimely death of the consummate journalist.”

A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) statement said the plane was a 1983 Pitts S-2B aircraft that crashed in an empty field about a half-mile south of the airport, which accommodates smaller aircraft, under unknown circumstances. That model aircraft is a biplane.

Longtime FOX 8 New Orleans reporter and anchor Nancy Parker was one of two people killed Friday when a small plane crashed near the city’s Lakefront Airport, the station confirmed.

The pilot, identified by Fox 8 as Franklin J.P. Augustus, also died in the crash, which happened just after 3 p.m. The station said Parker was shooting a story in a stunt plane at the time of the accident.

Parker, 53, had worked at the station for 23 years. She is survived by her husband and three children.

SMALL PLANE CRASH AT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AIRPORT KILLS 2, OFFICIALS SAY

“Today we mourn the loss of our longtime colleague and friend Nancy Parker,”  FOX 8 said in a Facebook post. “Details have not been released by authorities, but we can confirm she passed away in [a] plane crash while covering a story at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport.

“Nancy was a part of the FOX 8 family for the last 23 years,” the post continued. “She put her heart and soul into her work, covering thousands of stories and touching countless lives. She made a difference in the lives of those she reported on. She will be sorely missed, and her absence creates a void that cannot be filled.”

“Nancy was absolutely a joy to work with each and every day,” FOX 8 Vice President and General Manager Tim Ingram said. “Today we lost a wonderful journalist and remarkable friend, the New Orleans television community lost a true treasure, but beyond that, her family lost a wife, a mother and daughter. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) statement said the plane was a 1983 Pitts S-2B aircraft that crashed in an empty field about a half-mile south of the airport, which accommodates smaller aircraft, under unknown circumstances. That model aircraft is a biplane.

New Orleans Homeland Security Director Collin Arnold told reporters the plane crashed about 3 p.m., causing a fire.

“It looks like the plane is completely charred,” said Gerald Herbert, an Associated Press photographer who also is a pilot and has a hangar at Lakefront Airport. He went to the site and described charred debris lying near a fence in a grassy field.

Fox 8 reported that the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are sending investigators to New Orleans to look into the crash.

Gayle Benson, the owner of the New Orleans Saints, said Parker will be “sadly missed.”

“On behalf of my late husband Tom, to the family of WVUE-FOX 8, we offer our deepest sympathy to the tragic loss of Nancy Parker,” she said in a statement Friday night. “Nancy was an outstanding, Emmy Award-winning news anchor, who fostered great trust with both those who she covered and with her viewers in the New Orleans area.”

“Not only was she a leader in local television, she was a devoted wife to her husband Glynn and mother to their three beautiful children; Parker, Piper, and Pierce,” Benson added. “She was a dear friend and a frequent guest at local philanthropic lunches and at our family farm in Kentucky. She will be sadly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Nancy’s family.”

Rutgers University asks Louisiana high school to change logo

New Jersey’s flagship university has asked a high school in Louisiana to change its logo because it’s identical to the block “R” that Rutgers has trademarked.

Lincoln Parish Schools official Ricky Durrett tells the Courier News of Bridgewater the company that manages Rutgers’ brand requested Ruston High School stop using it.

Rutgers says the high school has 10 years to replace the logo on gear, social media platforms and on the school’s website.

Rutgers spokeswoman Dory Devlin says the university addresses trademark infringement issues to avoid confusion among brands and to ensure its logos are used for their intended purpose.

Durrett says Rushton Bearcats supporters frequently purchased Rutgers Scarlet Knights athletics gear and apparel for the logo.

Video obtained by local news outlets Tuesday reportedly showed the alleged attack of controversial comedian Andy Dick outside a New Orleans bar over the weekend.

The surveillance video shows a man who appears to be the comedian standing in a crowd outside the One Eyed Jacks bar in the French Quarter Saturday. Another man dressed in a black t-shirt can be seen approaching.

The man appears to take a swing at Dick, who falls. The alleged attacker then picks up a bottle and slowly walks away. A woman chases after him, New Orleans’ Fox 8 reported.

ANDY DICK ‘COLD COCKED’ OUTSIDE NEW ORLEANS CLUB, HOSPITALIZED: REPORT

Robert Couvillion, Dick’s booking agent, told the outlet that his client was “cold-cocked” outside the bar, slammed into the cement and was knocked out for 15 minutes. Dick was hospitalized for several days before returning to Los Angeles Monday.

“We thought he was dead. Then, when he did get up, he thought he was in L.A. He was unresponsive, his eyes were swimming in his head and it was really bad,” Couvillion said.

The New Orleans Police Department has attempted to meet with Dick following the incident and wants to talk with him, the department said in a statement. A criminal complaint was filed.

Guitarist Paris Dylan said he saw the alleged attack.

“What’s shocking to me is how clear it is that the assailant wasn’t provoked in any way,” Dylan told Nola Tuesday. “That he attacked with the intent to severely injure or even kill, out of nowhere. It was a very frightening scene.”

“I rolled him over on his side and continued to try to keep him awake before paramedics arrived,” he said.
