Commentator and author Mark Steyn said Thursday that President Trump sounds like an inspirational voice to thousands of his supporters.

Steyn made the comment on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” while listening in on the president’s rally in northwestern Louisiana, and added that Trump is energizing the GOP by fighting back against the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry and any potential Senate conviction.

“The president, actually, in this circumstance is standing there and saying ‘Go, bring it on’ — ‘Even if you did that I’d still run next November and I’d win next November’,” Steyn said in reference to the inquiry. “He’s inspirational to a faint-hearted Republican Party. This is the way to do it. This is why people voted for him — because your base wants a candidate that pushes back.”

TRUMP HAMMERS DEMS FOR IMPEACHMENT FOCUS AT LOUISIANA RALLY

At the rally in Bossier City, Trump claimed Democrats were lying about his engagement with Ukraine’s president and have been carrying out an unfair impeachment investigation in which he has little due process.

The president also accused the first two public hearing witnesses — State Department official for Eurasia George Kent and acting Ambassador William Taylor Jr. — of being “Never Trumpers.”

More from Media

“How about when they asked these two Never Trumpers ‘What exactly do you think you impeach him for’?” he asked. “And, they just stood there and [shrugged]. They’re unraveling and their sinister plans will fail — they’ve already failed.”

Host Tucker Carlson told Steyn he is starting to believe that Trump can indeed win reelection in 2020, even while under the pressures of the impeachment inquiry.

“I’ve gone back and forth, but it’s starting to turn out that way,” Carlson said.

“They’re not going to win because of Adam Schiff,” Steyn replied. “The Democrats won’t win with Adam Schiff.”

Steyn added there is a chance a Republican senator or two may vote to convict Trump and remove him from office in a Senate trial, naming Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah., as a possibility.

But he said that he hopes the Republican Party will otherwise stick together and stand with the president.

Tropical Storm Olga leaves downed trees, potential gusty winds in Mississippi, Louisiana

Remnants of Tropical Storm Olga swept through Mississippi and Alabama on Saturday, leaving wet conditions and dozens of downed trees.

The storm left no major flooding, but the National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans said Olga brought wind gusts of 40 up to 70 mph from coastal southeast Louisiana into southern Mississippi.

“These winds were higher than we expected, and we will be studying this storm to learn how we can better forecast situations in the future,” the NWS said.

A wind advisory that could potentially knock out power remained in eastern Mississippi, according to NWS Jackson Meteorologist John Moore.

“Olga has dissipated but remnants are pushing north into Tennessee,” Moore said. “It should be out of state [Mississippi] by later Saturday.”

Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton was trapped in his Mississippi home by a downed tree for 1.5 hours on Saturday and reportedly suffered injuries. He was taken out on a stretcher.

City spokeswoman Lucia Randle said the mayor was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center and was “under observation,” but didn’t specify his injuries.

Residents had also been alerted to multiple tornado warnings, and at least one twister touched down in Mobile, Ala.

Olga heads to Gulf Coast as rain douses Southeast

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  — Storms with heavy rains doused the drought-parched South on Friday, prompting alerts for floods and tornadoes as Post-Tropical Cyclone Olga headed for the Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center said Olga, located in the Gulf of Mexico south of Louisiana, would contribute to rainfall that could total 8 inches (20 centimeters) in spots by Sunday. Neither it nor Tropical Storm Pablo, far out in the Atlantic, was expected to reach hurricane strength.

The National Weather Service said a cold front moving into the South would collide with Olga to produce rain and possibly worse through much of the weekend.

WINTER LIKELY TO BE WARMER BUT HAVE ‘LARGE SWINGS IN TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION, NOAA SAYS

The powerful storm spawned multiple reported tornados in southwestern Alabama on Friday evening.

The National Weather Service said a “confirmed large and dangerous” tornado was on the ground in Mobile County. It was one of several twisters reported Friday night.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. WKRG showed viewer-submitted images of homes with damaged roofs and uprooted trees as well as possible tornados in the air. Alabama Power reported about 2,000 people were without power in the county.

Parts of the central Gulf Coast and Lower Mississippi Valley and western Tennessee Valley could receive as much as 8 inches (20 centimeters) through Saturday morning, forecasters said.

Streets were flooding around New Orleans and metro Birmingham, where about 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) of rain fell Friday morning, and more rain was on the way.

With scores of high school football games already rescheduled because of the weather, the University of Alabama canceled its homecoming pep rally, bonfire and parade because of the forecast.

Louisiana sheriff’s deputy, junior-high teacher wife held on child rape and porn charges: reports

Photos showing the married Louisiana suspects nude with a child were among the items authorities seized when a longtime sheriff’s deputy and a junior high school teacher were arrested this week on child rape and pornography charges, according to a report.

Taken into custody Wednesday were Dennis Perkins, 44, and his wife, Cynthia Perkins, 34, FOX 8 of New Orleans reported.

The husband was immediately terminated from his job as a lieutenant with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, while the wife resigned from her teaching job at a junior high school in Walker, La., the report said.

“It’s a sad day for us, for all law enforcement officers, when you arrest one of your own,” Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard said in a statement. “ … but as I have said in the past, no one is above the law.”

Both husband and wife were charged with 60 counts of production of pornography involving a child under 13, as well as rape charges, authorities said.

Dennis Perkins was additionally charged with obstruction of justice because he allegedly tossed his cellphone into a river after realizing investigators were about to arrest him while he was on a fishing trip, a source told FOX 8.

The investigation into the couple’s alleged crimes began with a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, The Advocate of Baton Rouge reported.

The number of children who may have been victims of the couple wasn’t immediately known, authorities told the newspaper.

Dennis Perkins was transferred to a detention center in Livingston Parish, with bond set at 1.6 million, and was later transferred to the Ascension Parish Jail. Cynthia Perkins was being held in Lieu of a $500,000 bond, according to The Advocate.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry issued a statement about the arrests.

“Protecting Louisiana children is one of my top priorities,” Landry said. “So my office and I will continue to do all we can to find and arrest child predators.”

New Orleans implodes damaged cranes on partially collapsed Hard Rock hotel

After looming over the streets of New Orleans for over a week, two damaged cranes that leaned precariously over the remains of a partially collapsed hotel were brought down Sunday afternoon using a series of controlled explosions.

Loud blasts reverberated quickly as the cranes fell. The first crane toppled down, landing upright on Rampart Street, while the other could be seen hanging over the side of the building.

Louisiana officials originally had planned to topple the cranes on Friday, before pushing the demolition to Saturday and then Sunday over crane stabilization issues and safety concerns. The Hard Rock Hotel, near the city’s iconic French Quarter, was under construction when it partially collapsed on Oct. 12, killing three workers and sending debris into the neighborhood below.

The two cranes — one 270 feet high and the other about 300 feet in height — have been a concern for officials for over a week, out of fears they may fall on their own and cause further injury and damage to nearby buildings.

“As they got up and got closer they found out some things about it that have changed the way they are going to take it down … and that’s going to take a little longer for them to accomplish,” Fire Chief Tim McConnell told reporters on Saturday. “The cranes are more damaged than they thought.”

Two bodies remained in the hotel’s unstable wreckage and Mayor LaToya Cantrell said recovering the remains would be a priority once the cranes were down. The cause of the collapse remained unknown. Cantrell and McConnell said evidence-gathering started soon after the collapse, and lawsuits already have been filed against the project’s owners and contractors.

On Sunday morning, officials closed off streets in the evacuation area and other places nearby that could be affected by the implosion. Area residents were warned to prepare for a lot of noise when the demolition took place, with city officials comparing it to the sound of fireworks.

The city also issued an evacuation order for the areas immediately surrounding the stricken building, with temporary evacuation zones stretching into historic areas popular with tourists.

Services such as electricity, gas, water, and sewer also were shut off in the evacuation zone.

The planned implosion was set to take place sometime after 1 p.m. but was delayed well into the afternoon as officials conducted last-minute safety checks and made sure no one had sneaked into the hotel. Safety officials also were asking people not to be on rooftops during the implosion.

Tourists, employees and people living in the area have spent the past couple of days milled about taking photos, but officials stressed that they did not want people approaching the site to watch the demolition.

“We prefer people to not be out here when this thing happens,” McConnell said. “It’s a dangerous operation.”

Damaged cranes hampering rescue efforts in partially collapsed New Orleans Hard Rock hotel

Rescue crews in New Orleans were still searching for a missing worker in the area where a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino building under construction partially collapsed over the weekend, voicing concern about two heavily damaged cranes that were in danger of falling down, officials said Monday.

“We’re still in rescue mode,” said New Orleans Fire Chief Timothy McConnell during a news conference. “Our teams are once again, they’re back in the building for the fifth time today. We think we’re close to an area” where the missing person might be, but “we do not have confirmation.”

City leaders were also concerned about rain possibly hampering rescue efforts and causing the structure to further collapse.

McConnell said the evacuation zone was slighted widened in response to the vulnerable cranes, as workers continue to move with search dogs through the unstable structure.

“The crane that looks damaged, we’ve known about,” he told reporters. “The engineers determined that the other crane is just as risky.”

Collin Arnold, the city’s Homeland Security director, said experts have been called in to help stabilize the structure and cranes.

“These cranes are both in a bad situation,” he said. “We have great minds here and a lot of equipment coming in. It’s just going to be a matter of time before we can figure out a game plan.”

At least 30 people were hospitalized and two people were killed after Saturday’s collapse. More than 100 people were working on the construction site near the French Quarter when the building gave way.

Large sections of the area near the damaged site remained closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Mayor LaToya Cantrell said utilities were cut off to nine major businesses in the area and 37 families have been put up at hotels.

She said the city will cooperate with an Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA) investigation into what went wrong.

“We’re going to be as cooperative as necessary, to the fullest extent,” Cantrell said Monday.

New Orleans Hard Rock hotel under construction collapses; at least 1 dead, multiple injured

A Hard Rock Hotel and Casino building under construction in downtown New Orleans partially collapsed on Saturday, killing at least 1 person and injuring several.

Gov. John Bel Edwards confirmed the fatality to reporters near the scene, saying there were several people unaccounted for.

“This remains a very fluid and dangerous situation and every few minutes something is falling,” he said, warning people to stay away.

The New Orleans Fire Department Chief Tim McConnell said they received a call about the fallen building around 9:14 a.m. Saturday morning. He said the top six floors of the building collapsed and that the rest of the construction is still “very unstable.”

He confirmed that one person died and at least three people are still missing. At least 18 people were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.

“It’s still a very dangerous situation,” he said. “The crane is still in place but it is unsupported and very dangerous. We are in the process of evacuating the buildings in the perimeter.”

Third suspect in murder of Joshua Brown, witness in Amber Guyger trial, sought in Louisiana; 2 arrested

Two of the three men wanted in connection to the killing of Joshua Brown, a key witness who testified in the high-profile murder trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, have been arrested while a third, Thaddeous Green, remained on the lam Wednesday morning.

The second suspect, Michael Mitchell, 32, was arrested by federal deputy marshals Tuesday night in Marksville, Louisiana, while Mitchell’s nephew, 20-year-old Jacquerious Mitchell, is in critical condition in a Dallas-area hospital with a gunshot wound.

Authorities believe the three men traveled from Alexandrian, Louisiana, to buy drugs from Brown, 28, in the parking lot of a Dallas apartment complex.

Jecquerious Mitchell told the police that Brown shot him in the chest after an argument during the drug deal. Dallas Police Assistant Chief Avery Moore said that during the deal Green shot Brown twice.

Green left with Brown’s backpack and gun. Investigators also seized 12 pounds of marijuana, 149 grams of THC cartridges and more than $4,000 in cash during a search of Brown’s home. It was unclear how the three men came into contact with Brown or why they would have driven more than 300 miles from central Louisiana to purchase pot in Texas.

While there had been widespread speculation that Brown’s death had something to do with Guyger’s trial, Moore on Tuesday afternoon cautioned against it.

Even though an attorney representing Brown’s family previously said Brown had reservations about testifying in the high-profile Guyger trial, Moore said Brown’s killing had nothing to do with the case.

Brown, who lived in the same apartment building, testified about what he heard the night Botham Jean was murdered. Lee Merritt, an attorney representing Brown’s family, said Brown’s mother told him about her son’s reservations about his visibility in the Guyger trial. In November, Brown was wounded in the foot in a shooting that left a 25-year-old man dead outside a Dallas nightclub, The Dallas Morning News reported.

“He was concerned that the people who shot him there still wanted to do him additional harm,” said Merritt, who also represented Botham Jean’s family.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson and other officials had asked the public to refrain from speculating about the killing of Brown while police investigated. Meanwhile, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc. requested an independent investigation into Brown’s slaying, calling it “deeply alarming and highly suspicious” in a news release.

Dallas police had no comment on calls for an independent investigation.

Guyger testified that in September 2018, after working a long shift, she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own and thought he was a burglar. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison for murder.

At the time of Jean’s shooting, Brown lived in the same apartment building as Guyger and Jean. Brown was killed at a different complex, investigators said.

Brown testified that on the night of Jean’s killing, he was in a hallway on the fourth floor, where he and Jean lived, and that he heard what sounded like “two people meeting by surprise” and then two gunshots.

At times during his testimony, Brown became emotional and used his T-shirt and tissues to wipe away tears. He said he had met Jean, a 26-year-old accountant from the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia, for the first time earlier that day.

Judge Tammy Kemp, who presided over Guyger’s trial, said Monday she was “saddened” and “stunned” to hear about Brown’s death, adding that “he seemed to be a very compassionate young man and I hate that his life has ended so soon.”
