North Carolina woman dies after her cigarette ignites oxygen tank, causing explosion

A North Carolina woman died Tuesday after her oxygen tank exploded — caused by an ignition from the cigarette she was smoking, investigators said.

Belinda Coble, 61, was being administered oxygen at her home in Zebulon, around 25 miles east of Raleigh, while she was smoking. The cigarette ignited the tank, sparking a small explosion and fire, according to officials.

Coble’s husband was asleep in a separate room at the time of the incident, WNCN reported, citing the Nash County Sheriff’s Office. The sounds of the explosion and the smoke alarm reportedly woke him up and he quickly extinguished the small fire.

“If a spark catches the oxygen and has a fuel source, it will ignite and spread extremely fast,” the blog post read. “The ‘fuel source’ can be anything from a small patch of dry grass, a carpet, or your clothing or hair.”

Experts advise to keep a 10-foot radius between the oxygen tank and people who are smoking, “or from campfires or other open flames.”

DNA clears North Carolina woman in sister’s cold case murder–after she told Dr. Phil she didn’t do it

North Carolina police announced Tuesday that DNA evidence has cleared a woman of involvement in her sister’s 1984 cold case murder–a year after the woman went on “Dr. Phil” to take a polygraph and proclaim her innocence.

Reesa Trexler was 15 when she was raped and stabbed to death in her grandparents’ Salisbury, N.C., home.

Salisbury police said the killer had finally been identified through DNA and genetic genealogy. Evidence from the crime scene was uploaded to a public genealogy website, producing leads that led to the suspect.

The Salisbury Post and other local media identified the suspect as Curtis Blair and said he died in 2004 of heart failure. He worked at a Frito-Lay plant located near where the murder occurred. His body was exhumed in June and his DNA matched DNA found at the crime scene.

“The analysis and investigation confirmed the suspect in the case was not a family member as had been speculated,” police said in a news release.

Most of that speculation had focused on Reesa’s younger sister, who was 13 in 1984 and now goes by Jodie Laird.

“I just want to say how thrilled me and my family are,” Laird said Tuesday, according to WBTV. “It’s been a long road, something that honestly for many, many years we didn’t think would happen.”

WISCONSIN WOMAN WHO OFFERED REWARD IN HUSBAND’S MURDER CHARGED WITH KILLING HIM

Laird’s appearance on the syndicated program in April 2018 revived interest in Reesa’s murder.

She told host Dr. Phil McGraw she wanted to prove she had nothing to do with her sister’s murder and the polygraph showed she was being truthful, WSOC-TV reported.

“Thirty-five years is a long time and we’re just as happy as we could possibly be,” Laird said, according to WBTV. “I know that we’ll never get all of the answers that we want, but at least we have the answers that we need.”

Reesa’s mother Vickie Oakes was quoted as saying she was not sure she would ever see the day that the case was closed.

On Thanksgiving, elk with love of apples gets tangled up in North Carolina man’s hammock

An elk in western North Carolina caused quite the commotion on Thanksgiving.

Jim Beaver says he gets visitors often, mainly elks who eat apples in his yard and play with his red hammock.

“They can be really quiet; we often will be sitting on the porch and look up and see 4-6 of them having quietly wandered in the yard to eat apples,” Beaver told  WLOS-TV.

This time, a visitor came and couldn’t quite leave.

Multiple news outlets reported that Jim Beaver told the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday that an elk was stuck in his yard with its antlers tangled up in a hammock.

Beaver said he didn’t free the elk himself, in case the animal decided to attack.

So he called the cops.

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook said Cpl. Ken Stiles climbed onto the roof, cut the hammock and freed the animal.

But not for long: apparently a love of apples is to blame.

Beaver told WLOS-TV that the elk, with pieces of the red hammock still in its antlers, has returned to the house a few times to feast.

Virginia man arrested on Black Friday after being found naked in Kohl’s parking lot, police say

A Virginia man was arrested Friday after police say he was found sitting naked in a car in a North Carolina Kohl’s parking lot on America’s busiest shopping day of the year.

Tylik Shawdu Little, 28, was spotted after a patrolling officer smelled marijuana coming from a row of vehicles, the Knightdale Police Department said in a news release.

The officer ordered Little to put clothes on and exit the vehicle, but he instead tried to escape by driving behind and between nearby buildings, according to authorities. He was stopped a short distance away and taken into custody, wearing pants and a shirt.

“This sort of public behavior on the busiest shopping day of the year is particularly appalling,” said Police Chief Lawrence Capps. “We are glad no citizens were adversely impacted and pleased that our emphasis on proactive patrols paid off in this instance.”

Donations skyrocket for family of Stephen F. Austin player who hit winning basket against Duke

Duke, the No. 1 college basketball team in the country, was stunned Tuesday by Stephen F.  Austin, losing in dramatic fashion in overtime. But the biggest shocker has been the spike in funds raised for the family of the player who hit the game-winning layup.

A two-month-old GoFundMe page set up to help Nathan Bain’s family in the Bahamas rebuild from Hurricane Dorian damage had raised more than $97,000 and counting just before 10 p.m. ET Wednesday, a huge spike from the roughly $2,000 it had raised over several weeks before Tuesday night’s game, The Associated Press reported.

The fundraiser generated more in donations in less than 24 hours after the game than Stephen F. Austin made from Duke for coming to Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C., and playing the game in the first place.

SFA’s guarantee from the game was $85,000, a school spokesman said.

GoFundMe spokeswoman Aja Shepherd said the Bain family page was the second-most popular campaign Wednesday, surpassed only by one for victims of an earthquake in Albania. More than 1,500 donors from all 50 states gave an average of $36, she said.

Bain said Wednesday the donation totals “skyrocketed” after the game.

“I was just in disbelief at what basketball had done for my family,” the 6-foot-6, fifth-year senior guard told The Associated Press by phone. “It was truly a blessing.”

The initial fundraising goal of $25,000 was increased to $50,000. That goal, too, was surpassed by early Wednesday afternoon.

“I want them to know how much … we appreciate it, and how thankful we are that we’re alive,” Bain’s father, Norris Bain, told the AP. “As bad as it is, it could have been a lot worse.”

Norris Bain said the storm left more than 10 feet of water in the family’s single-story home in Freeport, Grand Bahama, and the house was “totally gutted” and none of their possessions recoverable. And the church he runs, Tabernacle Baptist Church, had 5 feet of water inside; its affiliated K-12 school had 4 feet of water and a hole in the roof caused by the Category 5 storm that hit the islands.

He said the roof has been fixed and enough repairs have been made to reopen the school, but the phone system has not been fully repaired, among other things.

ESPN called  SFA’s win the biggest college basketball upset in 15 years and pointed out that the Blue Devils were favored by 27.5 points. It was the school’s first nonconference loss on their home court since 2000. Duke held a 15-point lead at one point in the game.

Duke had the ball in the closing seconds of overtime, but Tre Jones missed a jumper with about 15 seconds left and Wendell Moore rebounded it. Hounded by the Lumberjacks’ high-pressure defense, Hurt threw the ball away in a scramble with about 3 seconds left and it went to Bain — who went the length of the floor for a buzzer-beating layup. The Lumberjacks won 85-83.

Deer butchered inside nail salon stuns North Carolina college student

If you’re looking for a nail salon that doubles as a butchery, you just may be in luck.

A North Carolina student’s photo of a nail salon employee allegedly butchering a deer in the middle of the store has gone viral.

North Carolina courthouse removes Confederate statue, saying it’s time ‘to move forward’

A Confederate statue that stood for more than 100 years was removed from a North Carolina courthouse early Wednesday, joining a handful of places around the state where such monuments have come down despite a law protecting them.

A crowd of several dozen gathered outside the historic Chatham County courthouse to watch workers carefully dismantle the 27-foot-high statue. Television news footage showed workers atop motorized lifts secure the statue, which was then taken away with the help of a crane.

Taking down Confederate statues in North Carolina is rare since the state enacted a law in 2015 that restricted the removal of public monuments.

County officials argued in court that the monument was private property owned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. A judge hearing the group’s challenge declined to block the removal.

In past weeks, demonstrators for and against removal had gathered around the statue, leading to scuffles and some arrests.

“The last several months have been a painful time for Chatham County. We’ve experienced high emotions, division and even violence which have impacted residents, businesses and the overall feel of our community,” Chatham County Board of Commissioners Chair Mike Dasher said in a statement. “What’s clear now is that the overwhelming majority of our residents are eager to move forward.”

A state tally shows Confederate monuments are located at contemporary or historic courthouses in about half of the state’s counties.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR RIFLE STOLEN NEARLY 50 YEARS AGO BACK ON DISPLAY

Onlookers to the statue’s removal Wednesday had mixed opinions.

Robert Butler, a supporter of the monument, described the removal to Raleigh’s WRAL-TV as “heartbreaking.”

“A statue’s never hurt a soul, just like a grave memorial,” he said. “Do they hurt anybody?”

But Sandra Day of Moncure, who is black, told The News & Observer that she supported its removal. She said she got out of bed and put on a heavy coat to watch the statue come down.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be standing here,” she said. “I wanted to see it for myself.”

Kin to Michael Brown, Marine deserter accused of killing mom’s boyfriend: ‘Please, turn yourself in’

The mother and grandmother of Michael Brown, a decorated U.S. Marine now on the run after allegedly killing his mother’s boyfriend in Virginia, pleaded with him Friday to turn himself in.

“Please trust us when we tell you to trust the authorities and turn yourself in,” his grandmother, Diane Hanson, told Roanoke’s WFXR-TV.

Brown, 22, allegedly deserted his post at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina last month after he was accused in the shooting death of Rodney Brown on Nov. 9.

CAR OF MARINE LINKED TO VIRGINIA SLAYING IS FOUND IN SOUTH CAROLINA, AUTHORITIES SAY

On Friday, authorities in North Roanoke cleared a search area after investigating a report of a possible sighting of Brown walking along train tracks. But authorities said they could not confirm Brown was in the area, WSLS-TV of Roanoke reported.

Also on Friday, the U.S. Marine Corps confirmed that Brown was considered a deserter, WDBJ-TV of Roanoke reported. A Marine Corps spokesman told the station Brown did not show up for duties Oct. 24, was listed as AWOL the next day, and was declared a deserter Nov. 10, the day after Rodney Brown was killed.

Michael Brown, 22, left, is wanted in the shooting death of Rodney Brown, 54, authorities say.

“I don’t want you hurt, please,” his mother, Vanessa Hanson, said.  “Michael you’re my baby I love you please I can’t lose you. I’m scared for you.”

Brown’s car was found in South Carolina last week, authorities said Wednesday.

Several agencies in North Carolina and Virginia — in addition to the U.S. Marshals, FBI, and Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) have been conducting a massive manhunt for him.

His mother went on to say they would help him get a lawyer if he turned himself in.

“I can’t lose another person,” she added.

“Michael I know that you’re alone and afraid right now but there are people who want to help you,” his grandmother told WFXR. “We still care about you. Please turn yourself in. Nobody wants to see you die also.”

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia Monday issued a warrant for Brown’s arrest on second-degree murder charges.

Authorities were still working to determine a motive. Neighbors told WSLS the Marine recently learned Rodney Brown was not his biological father. He reportedly believed his mother’s boyfriend was his biological father for his entire life.

Authorities said Brown should be considered “armed and dangerous.”
