North Carolina assisted living facility workers accused of running dementia resident fight club

Three employees at a North Carolina assisted living facility were arrested after police said they ran a fight club with elderly residents with dementia battling it out against each out.

The women were accused in court documents of watching, filming and even encouraging a fight between a 70-year-old woman and a 73-year-old woman at the Danby House assisted living and memory-care facility in Winston-Salem, Fox 8 High Point and other local media reported.

Marilyn Latish McKey, 32, Tonacia Yvonne Tyson, 20, and Taneshia Deshawn Jordan, 26, were each charged with assaulting disabled persons, according to the reports.

Winston-Salem police announced their arrests Friday following an investigation into a June complaint of elder abuse at the facility.

“When you’re talking about someone who can’t take care of themselves, we’ve got to give specific attention to that,” Lt. Gregory Dorn told Fox 8.

Documents from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services show that during the filming of the fight one of the combatants was heard yelling “let go, help me, help me, let go” as McKey, Tyson, and Jordan continued to watch, the Winston-Salem Journal reported.

According to the documents at some point one of the staffers told the resident to “stop screaming (expletive),” the paper reported.

Danby House said in a statement that McKey, Tyson, and Jordan were fired in June when managers were alerted to the situation.

“Additional staff training and a more rigorous vetting process for all new and existing employees at Danby House have been implemented,” the statement said.

Residents of a North Carolina town have been asked to give up doing laundry for a week by city officials.

Surf City made the request in a Facebook post last week, saying Public Works crew would begin “a directional flush of the hydrants and waterlines” from Oct. 7 through Oct. 11.

“The purpose of this flush is to remove excess iron from the water lines,” officials explained on Facebook.

The post didn’t explain why the water would be unsafe for clothes, but added that all Pender County Island residents would be affected.

The water should clear up through normal use, the post assured. Some residents jokingly reacted while others were in disbelief. One user wondered if the post was from this year.

Another wrote: “It’s gonna be murder catching up with our families of 5, and extracurricular activities/sports.”

Calls to Surf City’s Public Works Department were not immediately returned.

A woman’s lover was ordered to pay $750,000 in damages to her ex-husband after a judge in North Carolina found under the state’s antiquated “homewrecker” law that he’s legally responsible for breaking up a more than decade-long marriage, according to reports.

NORTH CAROLINA COLLEGE PROFESSOR SUSPENDED AFTER ALLEGEDLY CALLING WOMEN ‘USELESS’ DURING LECTURE

Speaking Wednesday, Kevin Howard told Greenville’s WNCN-TV he filed a lawsuit against the man who had an affair with his wife over “alienation of affections,” a common law tort that dates to the 18th century, when women were considered their husbands’ property.

North Carolina is one of six states that still honor what’s been dubbed “homewrecker” or “heart balm” lawsuits under the tort that are brought by a spouse against a third party alleged to be liable for damaging the marriage, most often resulting in divorce.

“I filed this case because I believe it’s very important that people understand that sanctity of marriage is important, especially in this day and age when people question everyone’s morals, people question everyone’s liability as a person,” Howard told WNCN.

A Pitt County Superior Court judge in August ordered Greg Jernigan to pay the $750,000 in damages to Howard after court documents stated Jernigan seduced Howard’s wife while she was his teaching mentor, eventually initiating an affair that broke up an otherwise happy 12-year marriage, The Washington Post reported.

Under the “alienation of affections” law, a plaintiff must prove the marriage was happy before a third party intervened. Also dubbed the “mother-in-law” tort, the law does not imply a sexual affair had to have occurred, solely that an outside individual persuaded a married person to seek divorce.

A North Carolina college professor has been suspended after he was accused of saying “women are useless” during a lecture on Tuesday.

North Carolina State University spokeswoman Lauren Leslie Barker told Fox News Thursday that it is “actively investigating reports of inappropriate language in the classroom” and that the “faculty member has been immediately suspended from teaching while this incident is being further investigated.”

Students told WTVD-TV that physics professor Dr. E. David Davis was lecturing and randomly calling on students to answer questions when a female student could not correctly answer a question. That is when the situation reportedly escalated.

HARVARD SAYS IT RECEIVED $8.9M IN DONATIONS FROM JEFFREY EPSTEIN

Junior Maira Haque told WRAL-TV that Davis told the student: “You’re 20 years old and you forgot to bring this assignment in. Were you dropped on the head as a child? Do you have memory problems?”

Haque said the professor called on another female student to answer a question, which she could not do.

“Before he even could begin berating her or anything, she just straight up said, ‘I have memory problems too,’” Haque said. “Everyone laughed but, he kind of kept going and he was like, ‘I guess the women in this class are useless. I guess I should call on a man.’”

Haque told the station she then stood up and questioned why the professor was using that language.

PALESTINIAN HARVARD FRESHMAN, 17, ALLEGEDLY BLOCKED FROM ENTERING US OVER FRIENDS’ SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS

“The professor justified his comments by saying, ‘Well, obviously, it was a joke. Women are obviously useful. We need them for a species to reproduce,’” Haque told the news outlet.

One student in the class took a cellphone video of Davis saying: “It’s a joke. I mean, obviously women are not useless.” The student posted the video on Twitter and referred to the professor as a “women hater.”

Barker told Fox News: “Reports were shared with the university via Twitter” as well as through the school’s Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity.

She added, “At NC State we take pride in our campus culture which values and strives to live our commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity.”

Davis did not immediately return messages from Fox News seeking comment.

An outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in North Carolina has killed at least one person and sickened dozens of others, state health officials said.

As of Sept. 30, at least 97 people were sickened with the disease, while 63 were hospitalized, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

LEGIONNAIRES’ DISEASE OUTBREAK AT ATLANTA HOTEL LEAVES 1 DEAD, STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY

Though officials are still investigating the source of the outbreak, many of those sickened reported attending the North Carolina Mountain State Fair in September. Officials are urging anyone who attended the fair and is experiencing symptoms of Legionnaires’ to see a doctor.

“Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia,” according to the Mayo Clinic, which explains pneumonia as an inflammation of the lung that is typically caused by an infection.

“You can’t catch Legionnaires’ disease from person-to-person contact. Instead, most people get Legionnaires’ disease from inhaling the bacteria,” the Mayo Clinic adds, noting that older adults, those who smoke, or those with a compromised immune system are the most susceptible.

Legionella pneumophila, a bacterium, is usually the cause of the illness. It can be found in soil and water, but more commonly causes infection when it multiplies in water systems (e.g., hot tubs and air conditioners).

LEGIONNAIRES’ DISEASE OUTBREAK AT ATLANTA HOTEL IS NOW LARGEST EVER RECORDED IN GEORGIA, HEALTH OFFICIAL SAYS

The disease is treatable with antibiotics, and those who are sickened typically recover in full. Symptoms often include fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath.

The news comes after health officials in Georgia this past August responded to a massive Legionnaires’ outbreak linked to a hotel in Atlanta. At the time, a state health official told Fox News that the Legionella outbreak was the largest ever recorded in Georgia.

28 wild horses killed in Hurricane Dorian ‘mini tsunami’ off North Carolina coast

A Hurricane Dorian “mini tsunami” dragged 28 wild horses in North Carolina’s Outer Banks to their deaths earlier this month, according to reports.

After being swept away by floodwaters on Cedar Island on the Pamlico Sound Sept. 6, the horses’ bodies began to wash up on nearby beaches, The Charlotte Observer reported. Other missing horses are presumed dead.

WILD HORSES OF NORTH CAROLINA TO RIDE OUT HURRICANE WITH ‘BUTTS TO THE WIND’

“It was a mini tsunami,” herd manager Woody Hancock said, according to The Observer. “The horses normally see the water start to rise in a storm and migrate to higher ground, but they just didn’t have time. The shift in the wind happened too fast and they were taken off guard and washed off the island.”

He said people who have lived on the island their whole life said they had never seen anything like Dorian.

“It wasn’t like a normal hurricane. Areas that normally flood didn’t see flooding, and spots that never get it were devastated,” he said. The horses “didn’t have a chance.”

The hurricane hit the Outer Banks on Sept. 6 as a Category 1 with winds at nearly 100 mph.

The 28 horses make up more than half of the island’s 49-horse herd. They were identified by their branding.

The herd roams freely on 1,000 acres of private land on the island.

Some of the surviving horses managed to swim to nearby islands, the Observer reported.

“This has really affected everybody on the island,” Hancock said, according to The Observer. “All the horses were named after local people on the island and so every family felt a connection to the herd.”

An 18-year-old soldier-in-training has died after experiencing a “medical emergency” ahead of a training exercise at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, Army officials said Saturday.

The soldier from North Carolina was pronounced dead at Providence Hospital, according to Fort Jackson commander Brig. Gen. Milford Beagle, Jr. Hospital staff said the death was not heat-related, according to base officials.

“The tragic loss of a soldier, our nation’s most precious resource, is devastating to the families, friends and teammates,” Beagle said.

The soldier-in-training was “preparing to do physical training in his battalion area” when he died, Fort Jackson said in a separate statement.

“Our deepest condolences & support to the 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment ‘River Raiders’ on the loss of a soldier-in-training,” the base said.

The soldier’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

“I ask for your patience and consideration for our fallen brother’s extended family until the next-of-kin notification is complete and we are able to release his name,” Beagle added.

Officials said the soldier’s cause of death is under investigation.

The commander said  “separate investigations” will take place to “determine the facts behind the incident and provided in time to our soldier’s family, who rightly deserve this information.”

Fort Jackson is home to the Army’s main center for Basic Combat Training, often known as “boot camp.” The base trains 50 percent of those soldiers in boot camp and more than 60 percent of women entering the Army every year, it says.

A North Carolina high school teacher is being investigated by the Secret Service after allegedly telling a classroom of students that Vice President Mike Pence “should be shot in the head,” according to reports.

The unidentified female teacher allegedly made the remarks at Cuthbertson High School in Waxhaw, N.C., the same week Pence was visiting the area to campaign for U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop, Charlotte’s FOX 46 reported.

Union County Public School officials said in a statement that they take the allegations “very seriously” and placed the teacher on administrative leave.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office alerted the Secret Service, which is investigating the claims, the station reported. County officials have not released the teacher’s name.

“You should not be bringing in those type of viewpoints to your job,” Union County GOP Chair Allison Powers told Fox 46. “To just wish that kind of violence on anybody is just way out of bounds.”

“You should not be bringing in those type of viewpoints to your job. To just wish that kind of violence on anybody is just way out of bounds.”

— Allison Powers, chairwoman, Union County GOP

Firas Obeid, who is a parent to two Cuthbertson High School students, said he does not necessarily support Pence but agreed it’s inappropriate to make statements endorsing physical harm against any elected official regardless of their party affiliation.

“This is the vice president of the United States. He’s an elected official,” Obeid told the station. “Affiliation to a specific party does not entitle us to make a statement like that to anyone.”

Union County borders Mecklenburg County, where Charlotte is located. Both counties fall within the state’s 9th Congressional District where Bishop, the GOP candidate, won by a narrow two-point margin against Democrat Dan McCready in a special election earlier this month.

The election garnered national attention when President Trump visited the district and threw his support behind Bishop during a campaign rally in Fayetteville. Pence and Donald Trump Jr. also visited the region ahead of the election. The Trump campaign donated the maximum $2,000 contribution to Bishop’s campaign.

Political analysts said Trump’s visit largely helped get out the vote in the district’s more rural counties. The district’s more populated, suburban areas around Charlotte largely supported the Democrat in the race. Some said the narrow margin by which Bishop won the congressional seat should flash warning signs to the president ahead of 2020, suggesting suburban America is drifting away from Trump.

North Carolina woman kept as sex slave, beaten, tortured in front of children in hotel rooms, police say

A North Carolina woman was held as a sex slave and repeatedly tortured in two hotel rooms and two suspects have been arrested in connection with the case, police said on Friday.

The woman, whose identity was not released, was “forced into sexual acts with random men” and “physically and mentally punished… if she failed to meet a certain quota financially,” the Pineville Police Department said in a news release.

At two national hotels in Pineville, about 15 miles south of Charlotte, the woman was verbally abused, choked in ice baths and branded with a hot coat hanger, police said. The violence unfolded in front of her two children who were occasionally beaten with a belt but not sexually abused, investigators added.
