South Carolina deputy saves choking 12-day-old infant after stopping speeding vehicle

A South Carolina sheriff’s deputy is being hailed as a hero after a dramatic video showed how his quick thinking saved the life of a 12-day-old baby girl last month.

Deputy W. Kimbro with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office pulled a vehicle over on June 11 in the Summerville area for speeding. After the car stopped, one of the passengers exited and explained to Kimbro that they were rushing a small infant to hospital after she was found choking and had stopped breathing.

Kimbro immediately jumped into action, “Let me have the baby.”

In the footage released Thursday, the deputy was captured on his own body cam feeling for a pulse before beginning to massage 12-day-old Riley’s chest. He attempts to open the child’s airway by lifting her neck and inserting his finger in her mouth.

“As long as she’s crying like that she’s breathing,” he can be heard saying

According to the girl’s mother, the infant was in her bassinet sleeping when she went to go take a shower. The woman’s stepmother alerted her when she said that the baby was choking on what might have been milk.

“Her lips are a little blue, I’m worried about her circulation,” Kimbro could be heard telling another deputy.

“Come on, come on baby. She’s breathing as long as she’s crying like that she’s breathing but I’m worried about her because it looks like she’s going in and out,” he continued.

The infant can be seen making small movements and crying every so often but there is one point in the video where she appears to stop moving altogether.

Kimbro clears her airway of saliva and continues to tap on her chest to keep her awake. Again, the infant starts to cry.

“She’s okay, I think she’s going to be okay,” Kimbro said.

The newborn’s chest begins to move and the deputy seems confident that she can now breath. She makes a dramatic movement and stretches her arms out, appearing to signal she’s okay.

“I didn’t feel a heartbeat earlier so I started massaging her heart and now I feel it’s real strong now,” Kimbro told the worried mother.

EMS arrived on the scene shortly after and took over.

“Because of Deputy Kimbro’s steadfast, professional and heroic response, the 12-day old baby was able to live. Please join us in congratulating Deputy Kimbro for his gallant actions that prolonged human life,” the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

Deputy Kimbro was awarded the “Life-Saving Medal” for his actions.

Biden says he waited until right ‘opportunity’ to apologize for remarks on working with segregationist senators

Former Vice President Joe Biden admitted Sunday why he waited weeks to apologize for comments about working with segregationist lawmakers in his early days in the U.S. Senate.

He said his apology Saturday, delivered to a mostly black audience of several hundred in Sumter, S.C., was “the first opportunity we had to do it in a fulsome way.”

He reiterated his apology about “any comments I made (that) were taken in a way that people took offense from them. Then, I am truly sorry for that. That was not my intention.”

Saturday he said that he understood his remarks could have been offensive to some people.

“Was I wrong a few weeks ago?” Biden asked the Sumter audience during the first day of a weekend visit to South Carolina. “Yes, I was. I regret it, and I’m sorry for any of the pain of misconception that caused anybody.”

Biden on Sunday was continuing his campaign tour of South Carolina, the first Southern state to vote in next year’s primary and a crucial proving ground for candidates seeking the support of black Democrats.

TRUMP SINGS PRAISES OF AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM IN ELABORATE JULY 4 SALUTE

“Have I made mistakes? Yes. Do we grow? Yes. But, the fact of the matter is, that’s why I chose here in South Carolina, and chose an audience that in fact… would be the most likely to have been offended by anything that was said,” he said Sunday.

Biden added that he was ready to move on: “This is about the future. It’s not about the past.”

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., said Sunday she was happy that Biden apologized for his remarks about working in the past with segregationist lawmakers.

Harris and Biden have been at odds with one another since the California lawmaker went after the former vice president on the debate stage in Miami almost two weeks ago for his comments on segregationist senators.

Buffalo Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson was troubled by the shooting death of a young girl in his home state over the weekend, telling local media Wednesday he intends to pay for her funeral.

Ja’Naiya Scott, 11, was shot inside her Anderson, S.C. home early Sunday morning after someone reportedly fired at the residence more than 35 times. She sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder which severed her subclavian artery, causing major blood loss and eventually her death, USA Today reported, citing the Anderson County Coroner’s Office.

The young girl’s death affected many community members, including Lawson who grew up in Central, S.C., which is about 20 miles north of where the shooting took place.

Democratic presidential contenders Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., are trying to outdo each other with their campaign promises, according to Chris Stirewalt.

Sanders and Warren are both staking their claim in the progressive wing of the 2020 primary field, and beginning to cause concern among party brass, Stirewalt said Monday on “The Daily Briefing.”

“By the time Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are done, they will be promising each and every American a new Buick LaCrosse in their parking lot,” the Fox News politics editor claimed.

“They are in this lunatic derby. This is why Democratic leaders are rightly afraid of what’s going on. Because, if Sanders – who is now promising to forgive the student loans of everybody, basically, ‘throw in another trillion dollars,’ – if either Sanders or Warren get the nomination, there is a reality that Democrats won’t just miss out on taking the White House back, but they could get cleaned out in the Senate.”

HOME DEPOT CO-FOUNDER: BERNIE SANDERS IS THE ‘ENEMY OF EVERY ENTREPRENEUR’

Stirewalt claimed there is a danger the two candidates’ platforms could cause Democrats to also lose control of the House.

“This stuff is way outside the mainstream,” he claimed. “That’s what Democrats are afraid of.”

During a speech Saturday at Clinton College in Rock Hill, S.C., Sanders claimed graduates are put in an “absurd position of having to pay that debt off for decades.”
