South Carolina dad fatally shoots daughter he thought was intruder: report

A South Carolina father fatally shot his adult daughter early Sunday after mistaking her for an intruder, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at a Greenville home at about 1 a.m. The victim was identified as Nadeja Jermainequa Pressley, 23. Her father reportedly shot through a door at the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Fox Carolina reported that the shooting is being investigated.

A neighbor told another local outlet that she heard two gunshots and saw police everywhere.

“That’s just a sad feeling,” she said.

Tiger shark with stomach, teeth removed found on South Carolina beach, gruesome photo shows

A 9-foot juvenile tiger shark that had its stomach cut open and its teeth and jaw apparently removed was photographed on a South Carolina beach this week.

The mutilated shark was discovered on the beach of an undeveloped island north of Hilton Head Island by a sea turtle protection team, who sent the photo to state officials, The State reported.

30 HAMMERHEAD SHARKS DIED IN CAPTIVITY IN FRANCE; SOME ATE EACH OTHER, CONSERVATION GROUP CLAIMS

Bryan Frazier, a shark biologist at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR), told the outlet the shark appeared to have weighed between 200 and 300 pounds.

He also told the outlet the shark seemed to have been cut open by a human — and it wasn’t done by scientists, he added.

“They eviscerated it …. with a straight-line cut that wasn’t done by an animal,” Frazier told the outlet. “It’s really a strange thing to do.”

WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGE

Frazier said that it appeared as if the shark’s stomach had been removed — possibly to be examined — and the jaws and teeth had been cut out.

“It’s a bit perplexing to see why anyone would do this,” he said. “You hate to see anything killed for no reason.”

GREAT WHITE SHARK WEIGHING 2,137 POUNDS HEADING TOWARD OUTER BANKS, RESEARCHERS SAY

Fishing captain Chip Michalove tweeted a picture of the young mutilated shark on Thursday.

“Tiger shark killed in port royal sound, jaws cut out and gutted. I’m all for keeping mahi, grouper, snapper, etc. but to kill an old fish just for the jaws is a bit selfish,” he wrote in the tweet.

Tiger sharks are legal to catch and kill in South Carolina, according to The State, which reported that fishermen can kill one tiger shark a day if it’s longer than 54 inches.

Michalove, known as the “shark whisperer,” told the outlet he’s worried that too many tiger sharks are being killed every year.

“Sharks that big can’t just be replaced,” he said. “I’m worried for their population.”

“Sharks are the lions of the ocean ecosystem, and killing them means killing a lot of species below them that we also rely on,” he added.

A 2,137-pound great white shark is headed toward North Carolina’s Outer Banks, researchers have said.

The 15-foot shark named Luna “pinged in” last week off the coast of the Carolinas, according to a Facebook post from international great white shark research organization, OCEARCH.

SURFER KILLED BY SHARK OFF COAST OF FRANCE’S REUNION ISLAND: OFFICIALS

Luna was over the so-called Charleston Bump, a “deepwater bottom feature 80 to 100 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The bump is a deepwater bank, the organization said on its website, and deflects the flow of the Gulf Stream.

Luna was heading toward the Outer Banks, according to The Charlotte Observer.

OCEARCH’s post also mentioned that a 12-foot, 9-inch great white shark named Caroline was closer to Edisto Beach in South Carolina.

On Monday, Caroline pinged in again off the coast of Georgia, the organization said on Twitter.

A “ping” occurs when a tagged shark’s dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water, transmitting a signal to a satellite, the organization told the Pensacola News Journal.

REAL-LIFE ‘JAWS’: TERRIFYING GREAT WHITE SHARK IMAGE MIRRORS 1975 CLASSIC FILM

In April, a 1,688-pound great white named Miss Costa pinged in off the Gulf of Mexico, according to OCEARCH.

While it isn’t unusual for great whites to swim through the Gulf of Mexico, Miss Costa’s cruise through the Florida Panhandle is significant because a ping from a large female that far north into the Gulf is rare, OCEARCH said in a news release at the time.

The organization said it hopes that tracking Miss Costa and other great white sharks will help to understand the movement patterns of sharks in the Gulf.

Gorillas make hilarious attempts to avoid rainfall at South Carolina zoo in viral video

A viral video from a South Carolina zoo showed a group of gorillas behaving just like humans as they tried to take shelter from the rain.

The primates at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia were seen huddling beneath an overhang. Each of two female gorillas clutched a baby in its arms as they all cautiously looked for an escape route to drier ground.

“Gorillas are magnificent, majestic creatures full of grace and beauty… except when it rains,” zookeeper Brooke Hunsinger captioned the video on Facebook.

— Brooke Hunsinger, zookeeper

One brave gorilla, named Acacia, hugged the wall of the overhang in an effort to minimize wetness and shimmied around a corner out of the rain. As the three remaining grim-faced gorillas followed, each made a human-like face to show its revulsion to getting wet.

Some social media users suggested they send the gorillas umbrellas.

The male dominant silverback gorilla, Cenzoo, waited for the females, Macy and Kazi, and their babies, Mo and ZaKota, to make it to the dry area before leaving the overhang himself. The zoo replied that while there has been a hierarchy among the females, “all bets were off for dominance” in this situation because all the gorillas wanted to stay dry.

The video has been viewed nearly 8 million times since Hunsinger posted it on May 3.

Investigators with the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia said a child found something other than a messy pile of colorful plastic bits in a gift from his mom. He discovered 3.2 pounds of methamphetamine — street value, $40,000 — tucked into what appeared to be an ordinary box of Legos.

Investigator Jim Riggs with the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office told Fox News that a Statesboro, Ga., mother and a couple of her friends drove for about two hours to Charleston, S.C., where they bought the Legos from a consignment shop.

He said when the women returned from the trip and the mother gave her child the toy, there were no Legos to be found inside the container.

What there was, however, was a “big bag of meth.”

“The methamphetamine inside of the box was vacuum sealed, and that keeps it from moving around too much and also helps mask the smell,” said Riggs. He said this was the first time his office had made such a find, “especially in this quantity.”

“On top of the box itself, the Lego box was shrink-wrapped, which is the typical wrapping you find on a toy box or something coming from the factory,” Riggs said. “It was professionally done. It looked like you went to a regular retail store and purchased the box.”

He added, “Somebody took the time to cover the tracks, most definitely.”

Riggs told Fox News the child’s father called the sheriff’s office and told deputies he suspected the box contained illicit drugs.

Riggs said that once the sheriff’s office “field tested” the substance, the results came back positive for meth. The office then contacted the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Charleston, and it was determined that the consignment shop was itself not involved.

Riggs said the owner of the consignment shop told authorities the person who sold her the Legos said they’d been bought at a local auction.

Authorities suspect the package “was delivered to an address, probably a false address, or an abandoned house,” Riggs said.

Riggs said he thinks that “when a mailman got there and determined it was a false address he took it back with him and put it in a pile of undelivered mail and a lot of times those items are put up for auction if there’s no way to return those items.”

Riggs said the women who bought the toy box were fortunate they did not encounter law enforcement on their two-hour drive back to Georgia.

“If the ladies would have been stopped on their way from Charleston to Statesboro by law enforcement, and the methamphetamine would have been found, there would have been a lot of explaining to do. It would have been a bad scene,” Riggs said.

As it stands, the mom, her friends and the consignment shop owner have all cooperated with the investigation.

And an actual culprit? “It would be near impossible to find who did this,” Riggs said, adding that “no charges have been filed at this time.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden took a page out of President Trump’s playbook on Saturday when asked at a South Carolina fundraiser if he had a nickname for the president.

The 2020 Democratic presidential front-runner said he didn’t want to get down in the mud with Trump, but if he had to choose a moniker for the current White House occupant it would be a “clown.”

“There’s so many nicknames I’m inclined to give this guy,” Biden said, according to Politico. “You can just start with clown.”

Trump, who, during his 2016 presidential run, famously began doling out nicknames like “Crooked” Hillary Clinton, “Lyin” Ted Cruz and “Low Energy” Jeb Bush – has labeled Biden as “Sleepy Joe” when the former vice president declared his White House bid in April.

TRUMP HITS BIDEN’S ‘DUMB’ COMMENT IN FOX NEWS INTERVIEW

At the private fundraiser on Saturday, Biden said Trump’s nicknames were part of his war of words with his political rivals that are meant to keep the discussions away from the issues.

“On every single issue and on every demeaning thing he says about other people, I have no problem responding directly,” Biden said. “What I’m not going to do is get into what he wants me to do. He wants this to be a mud wrestling match.”

The president has recently stepped up his attacks on social media – blasting everyone from the media reporting on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report to social media for being an alleged partner of the Democratic Party.

Biden said that Trump’s behavior – both on and off social media – has worried his fellow world leaders and that “at least 14 world leaders” have called him during Trump’s tenure to express their unease.

Biden said British Prime Minister Theresa May asked him directly for reassurance that the U.S. and the United Kingdom “still have a special relationship.”

BIDEN TOPS NEW NH POLL AS WELL AS NEW NATIONAL SURVEY

Biden said the U.S. under Trump “is about to squander alliances” built over generations. He noted that he’s “spent my entire adult life” in foreign affairs, first with 36 years in the Senate then eight years as President Barack Obama’s vice president.

The former vice president’s comments came on the same day that he lambasted Trump and the Republicans for pushing for stricter voter identification laws and charged that Jim Crow is “sneaking back in.”

In criticizing Republican efforts to adopt more stringent voting rules, including identification requirements and curtailing early voting hours, Biden recalled the racial segregation laws of the past.

“You’ve got Jim Crow sneaking back in,” he said, referring to the era before the civil rights movement. “You know what happens when you have an equal right to vote? They lose.”

Biden centered much of his trip to the third state in the nation to hold a primary on the need to restore decency to the White House. “Your state motto is, ‘While I breathe, I hope,'” he said at the rally after continuing his full-throated denunciation of President Trump. “It’s not a joke. We’re breathing, but God, we have got to have hope.”

Biden will continue his trip Sunday by worshipping at Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia.

The 2020 candidate’s trip to the Palmetto State comes after Biden opened his latest run for president with explicit appeals to white, working-class voters across the Midwest, pledging his support for unions and promising to rebuild the middle class. Now, Biden is trying to gauge whether his message will resonate among more diverse electorates. Black voters accounted for a solid majority of Democratic presidential primary ballots in 2016.

A huge alligator put up quite a fight when animal control workers tried to remove it from a South Carolina neighborhood on Tuesday.

A series of videos posted on Facebook showed the 10-foot, 2-inch alligator fighting against three men in the Murrells Inlet, S.C., neighborhood.

MAN IN NEW MEXICO SPOTS HUGE SNAKE ‘SOAKING IN THE MORNING SUN’ IN FRONT OF OFFICE BUILDING

Josh Neidig, who lives in the neighborhood, posted the videos online.

According to WBTW, men from the wildlife and reptile removal service known as the Snake Chaser were called in to take care of the gator, with help from officers with the Horry County Police and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

In the first video, which was taken by Bridgett Hamrick and posted on Facebook by Neidig, the alligator is clearly angry, fighting against the wranglers.

“He’s mad,” one person could be heard saying.

The wranglers were then seen dragging the gator from the front yard to the back.

On the way, the alligator was filmed fighting against the ropes with its jaws open, even rolling in the grass to try to get free.

The crowd of adults and children watching could be heard commenting, with someone saying: “You don’t want to see what that barrel roll looks like up close.”

The second video showed an apparently tiring gator, as the wranglers tried to get a rope around its jaw.

Despite their initial success, the gator managed to get the rope off. However, in the third video, one of the wranglers could be seen on top of the gator as two others taped its mouth shut.

Neidig was told by officers the alligator would be released back into a local river, WBTV reported.

ALLIGATORS BELLOW AT FLORIDA ZOO, VIDEO SHOWS: ‘IT SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF JURASSIC PARK’

Warm weather means mating season for alligators, which leads them to stray farther from the water than usual. According to the South Carolina DNR, alligators begin courting in April and breed in late May and early June.

Warmer weather also revs up the prehistoric predators’ metabolism, making them more active and aggressive as they hunt for prey and mate in the coastal South.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recommends not swimming during dusk or dawn, an alligator’s most active hours, keeping animals on a leash and away from water and keeping a safe distance away from the animal.

South Carolina fifth grader Raniya Wright, who died shortly after a fight with another student at her elementary school last month, died due to natural causes, a prosecutor said on Friday.

Wright’s family claimed she was being consistently bullied by another student in her class at Forest Hills Elementary, and the student baited her into a fight on March 25, during which the 10-year-old reportedly suffered substantial injuries after hitting her head on a bookshelf.

Prosecutor Duffie Stone said in a press conference on Friday that Wright’s death was the result of a congenital condition called an arteriovenous malformation, a tangle of abnormal blood vessels in the brain. The child had repeatedly complained of headaches in the days and weeks before her death.

She added that no criminal charges would be brought against the student who allegedly fought Wright after the findings were revealed by the county coroner.

“There was no evidence of trauma on or inside her body … that would indicate that any fight (of) any magnitude contributed to her death,” Stone said.

Authorities say that Wright and another student engaged in a fight during class on March 25, which did not involve any weapons. Wright was taken to the nurse, and paramedics later arrived to find the girl unconscious.

She was taken to a nearby hospital, then airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina about an hour away in Charleston. She died two days later.

The Colleton County School district, which includes Wright’s elementary school, issued a statement at the time describing the girl as bright, kind and involved.

“Our community has suffered a tremendous loss,” the statement read. “Raniya was a wonderful student. She loved to write, spend time with her friends, play basketball, and loved being a big sister. She was actively involved in her church as a junior usher.

“She will be missed greatly by her family, friends and the entire school.”

A South Carolina mother has been arrested after her infant son tested positive for methamphetamines, police say.

Ashley Alese Vester, of Rock Hill, was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with felony illegal neglect of a child, according to The Rock Hill Herald. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

The newspaper reports the 27-year-old tested positive for both marijuana and amphetamines at the hospital shortly after her son’s birth in late March, leading police to investigate the situation.

Authorities in South Carolina are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 20-year-old Furman University student who collapsed and died during a frat event on Friday, reports said.

The off-campus event was approved by the university, WYFF reported. The student was identified as Caroline Smith. She reportedly told her boyfriend at some point during the party that she didn’t feel well.

The history and communication studies major fell to the ground and was unresponsive, the report said. Her boyfriend performed CPR until EMS arrived at the scene, The Island Packet reported. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
