Florida wildlife officials capture 18-foot, 98-pound Burmese python

Officials in South Florida captured a record-breaking 18-foot, 4-inch Burmese python in Big Cypress National Preserve last month as part of an ongoing effort to remove the invasive species from the Sunshine State.

Cynthia Downer and Jonathan Lopez of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Python Action Team (FWC PAT) captured the 98-pound, 10-ounce female snake on Sept. 22, the commission announced Friday.

It is the largest snake ever caught by the team and the largest captured at the Big Cypress preserve. It’s also the second-largest python ever caught in the wild in Florida and just four inches short of being the longest wild python ever captured in Florida.

According to Fox 13 Tampa, the largest python ever caught in Florida was captured in 2013. That female python was over 18 feet, 8 inches long and weighed 128 pounds.

“Capturing large adult females is critical because it prevents them from potentially adding an average of 30 to 60 hatchlings to the population each time they breed,” the FWC said in a statement.

“These snakes, coupled with the thousands removed by our partners at the National Park Service and the South Florida Water Management District, make a significant impact to protect Florida’s native wildlife,” FWC Executive Director Eric Sutton said in a statement. “With leadership from Gov. Ron DeSantis, we are committed to working with our partners […] to accomplish our goal of removing pythons from our beautiful state.”

PIT BULL DIES AFTER PROTECTING FLORIDA KIDS FROM SNAKE, FAMILY SAYS

Environmentalists say Burmese pythons are responsible for killing deer, alligators and other important wildlife in the state. Their presence in the wild is the result of the snakes escaping or being released from homes where people keep them as pets.

The FWC also announced Friday that its Python Action Team had captured its 900th Burmese python on Sept. 24 in the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area in Miami-Dade County. That snake weighed just a quarter of a pound and measured just over two feet long.

The public can help by reporting snake sightings online, using the app “IVEGOT1” or by calling the state’s Exotic Species Hotline at 888-IveGot1 (888-483-4681), the commission added.

Former Georgia cop who fatally shot unarmed fleeing man acquitted of manslaughter

A since-fired Georgia police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man fleeing after a confrontation was found not guilty Saturday of voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter.

However, Zecheriah Presley was convicted of violating his oath of office by shooting Tony Green, 33, in Camden County last year. Presley was fired from the Kingsland Police Department as a result of the incident and indicted by a grand jury after Green was found to be unarmed.

Presley was ordered to be jailed pending sentencing Oct. 18. He faces a prison term of one to five years. He could have faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted of manslaughter.

News4Jax reported that the trial judge ordered deliberations to continue with an alternate juror earlier Saturday after the only black member of the panel fell ill.

Though Presley’s body camera recorded the ordeal, darkness and something covering the camera lens left the jury without a clear video of the shooting and the moments leading up to it.

Presley said he followed Green’s car on the night of June 20, 2018, because he believed Green was driving on a suspended license. Dash camera video showed Green drive off the side of the road, open the car door and run. He returned to the vehicle briefly to grab an object, then fled again.

Presley chased Green on foot down a dark street, before a short struggle that was not seen on video. The recording picked up the electrified clicking sound from Presley’s Taser, followed by eight gunshots.

Presley told another officer who arrived on the scene that Green had been on top of him, trying to grab his taser. “And then I was going for my gun, and he started taking off. And I fired,” Presley said on the video. “I thought he was going to kill me,” he added, according to First Coast News.

WASHINGTON STATE TEEN’S COLD CASE MURDER CRACKED AFTER NEARLY THREE DECADES

An autopsy found Green had been struck by bullets eight times. He’d had small amounts of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and a tranquilizer in his system.

On the witness stand Wednesday, Presley added new details to his account. He said he opened fire only after Green turned back to face him and extended an arm, making Presley believe he had a gun. Investigators found Green was carrying a cell phone.

“Tony Green was not shot because of misdemeanor offenses,” said defense attorney Adrienne Browning in her closing argument Thursday. “He was shot because of bad decision after bad decision until the threat was overwhelming and Zech feared for his life.”

FLORIDA WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER PARENTS FIND 24 PIPE BOMBS IN HER BEDROOM

“He made a fatal mistake and it was a mistake that cost a man his life,” prosecutor Rocky Bridges said of Presley in his closing argument. “You don’t have to like Tony Green. … He ran from the police, not a good decision. But he was not armed. He did not turn on officer Presley. He did not deserve to die.”

Prosecutors said Presley had 474 days from the shooting to the beginning of the trial to craft his story in compliance with the law. “If he really thought he grabbed a weapon, if he really thought that’s what happened, you get on the radio and call for backup. You don’t run and chase after an individual with your Taser drawn,” Bridges told the jury, according to News4Jax. “He had the opportunity to say, ‘I thought I saw a gun. He pointed the gun at me. He turned on me.’ You didn’t hear that.”

“My son was murdered,” Green’s father, Wayne Anderson, told News4Jax after the verdict was read. “The man that murdered my son gets to go home to his sons … and can only possibly serve one to five for murder.

“This ought to serve notice to a lot of our young black men and black men, period, that you can run up and down the football field, you can run on down the courts, you can hit baseballs, you can do it,” Anderson said. “But at the end of the day, when [they] see you, they see a black man.”

Florida animal rescue groups launch desperate search to find disabled dog stolen with car

Florida animal rescue groups have stepped in to help a woman desperate to find her disabled dog after her car was stolen with the husky mix inside.

Wanda Ferrari had left the air conditioning on for her 13-year-old dog Zorra, whose back legs are paralyzed, while she popped into a Dollar Tree in Oakland Park, just north of Fort Lauderdale. When Ferrari returned, she found her car and dog had disappeared.

“Whoever took the car, if you just need the car, that’s not a problem. A North Carolina college professor has been suspended after he was accused of saying “women are useless” during a lecture on Tuesday.

North Carolina State University spokeswoman Lauren Leslie Barker told Fox News Thursday that it is “actively investigating reports of inappropriate language in the classroom” and that the “faculty member has been immediately suspended from teaching while this incident is being further investigated.”

Students told WTVD-TV that physics professor Dr. E. David Davis was lecturing and randomly calling on students to answer questions when a female student could not correctly answer a question. That is when the situation reportedly escalated.

HARVARD SAYS IT RECEIVED $8.9M IN DONATIONS FROM JEFFREY EPSTEIN

Junior Maira Haque told WRAL-TV that Davis told the student: “You’re 20 years old and you forgot to bring this assignment in. Were you dropped on the head as a child? Do you have memory problems?”

Haque said the professor called on another female student to answer a question, which she could not do.

“Before he even could begin berating her or anything, she just straight up said, ‘I have memory problems too,’” Haque said. “Everyone laughed but, he kind of kept going and he was like, ‘I guess the women in this class are useless. I guess I should call on a man.’”

Haque told the station she then stood up and questioned why the professor was using that language.

“The professor justified his comments by saying, ‘Well, obviously, it was a joke. Women are obviously useful. We need them for a species to reproduce,’” Haque told the news outlet.

One student in the class took a cellphone video of Davis saying: “It’s a joke. I mean, obviously women are not useless.” The student posted the video on Twitter and referred to the professor as a “women hater.”

Barker told Fox News: “Reports were shared with the university via Twitter” as well as through the school’s Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity.

She added, “At NC State we take pride in our campus culture which values and strives to live our commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity.”

Davis did not immediately return messages from Fox News seeking comment.

Trump support unwavering in Florida retirement community of his most loyal champions

House Democrats’ ramped-up efforts to investigate President Trump have redoubled support for the president of some of his most loyal champions.

As retirees living on a fixed income, Paula Bedner and her husband don’t have a lot of money to spare.

But when Democratic House members announced last week they were carrying out an impeachment inquiry against Trump, her husband, Don, went online to donate to Trump’s reelection campaign.

The Bedners live in The Villages retirement community in Florida where on Thursday, Trump made his first appearance outside Washington since Democrats ramped up their impeachment inquiry.

“In The Villages, if anything, it has gotten people more determined not to let them get away with it,” said Paula Bedner, who is active in the local Republican women’s club. “People have had enough of this. They see the president is doing good things and the economy is going well.”

Referring to the nickname Trump has given official Washington, she said, “The swamp is fighting hard.”

WHISTLEBLOWER COMPLAINT ON TRUMP UKRAINE CALL: READ THE DOCUMENT

The support from the retirement community comes amid the uproar surrounding Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which the American president sought an investigation into Joe and Hunter Biden’s dealings in Ukraine That phone call sparked an impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives and has the Trump administration facing a new round of subpoenas. The inquiry was touched off by a still-anonymous whistleblower’s complaint.

Fellow Villages resident Dale Sutthoff said he wasn’t bothered by reports of Trump’s communication with Zelensky, in part because he felt Trump was looking into any interference in the 2016 election that may have stemmed from Ukraine.

“He’s doing nothing more than protecting us under the law,” Sutthoff said. “It’s just fine.”

Even though they didn’t get invitations to hear Trump, hundreds of The Villages residents congregated in a town square next to the theater where the president was speaking.

Dressed in red “Make American Great Again” ball-caps and wearing “Trump-Pence” T-shirts, they sat in lawn chairs underneath a giant oak tree in the square filled with restaurants. Golf carts, the primary mode of transportation, bore signs that read, “Trump Pence, Keep America Great, Victory 2020.”

In a corner of the town square farthest from the theater, in front of a deli, about 25 anti-Trump protesters gathered with “Impeach 45” and “No More Lies” signs. Some blew whistles to show support for the whistleblower whose report led to the impeachment inquiry. Others chanted “Lock him up!”

At one point, Trump supporters at a neighboring Greek restaurant started shouting at the anti-Trump protesters, who blew their whistles back at them. Other Trump supporters waved Trump flags in front of the protesters, and at several points deputies had to get between the two groups.

Steve Pierson, who retired to The Villages from New York three years ago, wore a T-shirt that said, “Villagers for Trump.” He joined the group last year after residents staged a golf cart caravan that drove through the retirement community to show support for Trump before the midterm elections. He called the impeachment inquiry “political theater.”

“The Villages is overwhelmingly, wholeheartedly pro-Trump,” Pierson said.

A Florida family is devastated that an eight-month-old pit bull died Tuesday after protecting two boys from a venomous snake.

Gary and Gina Richardson’s sons were in their backyard Monday in Sumter Country cleaning their dog Zeus’ water bowl when a coral snake slithered undetected up to the two children.

“All of a sudden, he started attacking the snake which was close to my son and he was bit four times,” Gary told Fox 35.

The family rushed Zeus to a vet in Ocala.

“I knew when he first came in that something was wrong and (it) was very traumatic because I knew he was dying,” Gary said.

The vet gave the puppy medicine and the family was hopeful that he would get better, but he died the next day.

“He’s been a member of the family,” Gina said. “It just killed us. We just knew the antivenom was going to work.”

Zeus had lived with the Richardsons since he was born in January.

The boy, identified only as Aedric, was being watched by his grandmother Sunday in Pace, near Pensacola, when she briefly took her eyes off of him to use the restroom, the boy’s mother said at a press conference. While Aedric was unsupervised, the child wandered out of the front door and into the woods near his home.

After police searched for two hours, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s office decided to release their bloodhound, which they’ve had for about a year.

The dog led authorities to the boy in about 28 minutes, deputies said during the news conference. They said the boy had a few bug bites and minor scratches but was otherwise uninjured. The woods where the boy was found were so thick police needed a machete to reach him. He was found about 200 yards from his home.

“The most terrifying words a mother can get on the phone is ‘your child is missing, get home right now,” said the boy’s mother Audra Hughes, who was working when Aedric went missing. “And then a couple hours later, the best news I’ve ever heard in my life. ‘We found your kid.’”

Hughes added that much of her neighborhood was out trying to help in the search.

Florida man who dragged shark in viral video sentenced to 10 days in jail

A Florida man who recorded a shark being dragged to its death behind a high-speed boat accepted a plea deal on Thursday and was sentenced to 10 days in jail.

Robert Lee “Bo” Benac III was the third man to face charges stemming from the June 2017 incident where a shark was seen on video being dragged by a rope from a 22-foot boat near Egmont Key. The men could be heard laughing at the shark on the recording, which was posted to social media and generated widespread outrage.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission led the prosecution against Benac and Michael Wenzel, 23, who took a similar plea deal in February, according to the Bradenton Herald.

In addition to the 10-day jail sentence, Benac was given 11 months of probation, ordered to pay a $2,500 fine and perform 250 hours of community service, 125 of which must be spent at an animal shelter, the outlet reported. He also lost his fishing license for three years.

Benac pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and violation of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rules.

Benac, Wenzel and Spencer Heintz, 35, were arrested in December 2017, but the charges against Heintz were eventually dropped, according to the Bradenton Herald.

Benac and Wenzel weren’t as lucky.

Following the incident, other videos began to surface involving the men. One showed Wenzel shooting a shark with a .38-caliber revolver and another showed the men pouring alcohol down the throats of fish that were alive, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“We were confident in what we could do and what we could show, but at the end of the day you can never be 100 percent confident in the jury system …,” Benac’s lawyer, Justin Petredis said. “That was a worry, that the anger and emotions of the jury would outweigh where we were hoping common sense would take over.”

Petredis said Benac took the plea deal because of how widely the videos had been shared online, the outlet reported. Benac also received credit for a day spent in the county jail.
