On Thanksgiving, elk with love of apples gets tangled up in North Carolina man’s hammock

An elk in western North Carolina caused quite the commotion on Thanksgiving.

Jim Beaver says he gets visitors often, mainly elks who eat apples in his yard and play with his red hammock.

“They can be really quiet; we often will be sitting on the porch and look up and see 4-6 of them having quietly wandered in the yard to eat apples,” Beaver told  WLOS-TV.

This time, a visitor came and couldn’t quite leave.

Multiple news outlets reported that Jim Beaver told the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday that an elk was stuck in his yard with its antlers tangled up in a hammock.

Beaver said he didn’t free the elk himself, in case the animal decided to attack.

So he called the cops.

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook said Cpl. Ken Stiles climbed onto the roof, cut the hammock and freed the animal.

But not for long: apparently a love of apples is to blame.

Beaver told WLOS-TV that the elk, with pieces of the red hammock still in its antlers, has returned to the house a few times to feast.

South Carolina boy, 10, was shot dead by friend handling gun: sheriff

A South Carolina sheriff’s office investigating the Nov. 15 death of a 10-year-old boy said Monday that the child was accidentally shot in a friend’s mobile home as the friend was handling a handgun.

Dylan Twitty’s family had been demanding answers about his death since he was found on the ground between two mobile homes bleeding from a gunshot wound to the chest by a boy who had just gotten off a school bus, according to reports.

“After extensive work over the last 11 days investigators have determined that the victim in this case was killed by another ten-year-old male child during the handling of a 9 mm pistol inside a mobile home,” the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The mother of the boy who pulled the trigger was charged Nov. 19 with neglect for leaving her son home alone, according to the news release.

The sheriff’s office says the mother kept the gun under a mattress and her son took it out.

“The boys were playing in the living room of the home, and the pistol discharged one time while the child who lived in the home was handling it,” the news release said.

Investigators spoke to the child twice — once on the night of the incident and again on Nov. 22.

During an interview with Fox News, Dylan’s mother said investigators told her that after the shooting, the other boy dragged Dylan out of the home and left him where he was found.

Delia Twitty, 44, said she was told that the boy then went back into the house and cleaned up the blood.

“It’s a very sad, tragic thing,” she said.

Dylan was a fifth-grader at Erwin Elementary School in Lancaster, where he was a straight-A student.

Twitty said her son had just been inducted into the Beta Club at Erwin because of his grades.

She told the Lancaster News last week that Dylan wanted to be a police officer when he grew up.

“He was always telling me stuff like, ‘Make sure you put your seatbelt on,’” she told the paper. “He had such a good sense of right and wrong, and he just wanted everybody to do the right thing.”

Georgia teenage girl planned knife attack at predominantly black church, police say

A teenage girl in Georgia was arrested after an alleged plot was discovered by her classmates last week to attack a mostly black church by using knives on worshippers because of their race, according to officials.

The Gainesville, Ga., Police Department said on Tuesday the white, 16-year-old girl, who has not been identified, planned to attack the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, located in the northern part of the state.

The plot was revealed when Gainesville High School students told administrators on Friday the 16-year-old had a notebook with “detailed plans” to kill worshippers at the church, according to Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish.

“The student who immediately reported this to school officials saved lives,” Parrish said at a news conference on Tuesday. “She had written down how she wanted to do it, the best way to do it. She had procured some butcher knives, kitchen knives to do the attack with.”

After police were notified by school officials when the threat was verified, the 16-year-old girl was taken into custody and charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, the police chief said. She’s being held in a youth detention center in Gainesville.

While details of the alleged plot have yet to be released, Gainesville Police said their investigation indicated “the church was targeted by the juvenile based on the racial demographic of the church members.”

Gainesville is about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta and is a city of just over 40,000 people, about 17 percent of whom are African-American.

Bethel AME is a predominantly black church and is part of the same family of churches as the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. Nine black church members, including a senior pastor and a state senator, were killed on June 17, 2015, when white supremacist Dylann Roof opened fire during Bible study.

Roof later told FBI agents he had hoped the killings would start a race war.

Rev. Dr. Michelle Rizer-Pool, who leads the congregation at Bethel AME, said the teen girl visited the church last Wednesday, which is usually a Bible study night, according to FOX5.

Rizer-Pool, who has pastored the church and its approximately 40 members since June 2018, said the congregation recently celebrated 118 years of service in the community.

“When I found out I drove to the church, went inside it and prayed and anointed my church and asked God to put a hedge of protection around us,” she told the AP in a phone interview on Tuesday. “That was on Friday. On Sunday, I tried to relay what was going on without a lot of emotion so that the congregants would remain calm …

“You know, I’ve been preaching for a while now about being on the battlefield, being a soldier in God’s army and that if you believe that God is in charge, he won’t allow hurt or harm to come your way. One of my members told me, ‘You’ve been getting us ready.’ I guess I have.”

MILWAUKEE MAN, 61, ACCUSED OF ACID ATTACK CHARGED WITH HATE CRIME: PROSECUTORS

Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, the Presiding Bishop of the 6th Episcopal District of AME Church, said Tuesday he’s worried after the incident, adding there is “great concern among AME” if the denomination has a target on its back.

“We are glad that Bethel Gainesville did not have Bible study last Wednesday night,” he said at a news conference.

Authorities in Gainesville said they have stepped up patrols around the church in the wake of the incident.

“They have already stepped up and assured me it would be a continual, not something that fades away,” Rizer-Poole told reporters.

The South has a long history of black churches being bombed, burned and shot up.

Besides the killings by Roof, the white son of a sheriff’s deputy was arrested in April and accused of setting fires that destroyed three black churches in rural Louisiana. Holden Matthews is awaiting trial on arson and hate crimes charges in the Louisiana church burnings.

Florida pastor accused of sexually abusing minor kills himself, police say

Florida pastor and popular Christian radio host who was recently charged with sexually abusing a teenage girl has killed himself, authorities say.

Bryan Fulwider, 59, was pronounced dead in his home late Sunday, Altamonte Springs police told the Orlando Sentinel. The pastor and former ‘Friends Talking Faith’ co-host had been out on bail since Oct. 17.

The Medical Examiner’s Office for Seminole County ruled Fulwider’s death to be a suicide. Fulwider was arrested earlier this month after a young woman told investigators he sexually abused her for years while he was her pastor.

The alleged abuse began in 2014 when the victim was 14 and Fulwider was the senior minister at the First Congregational Church of Winter Park. He faced multiple charges and could have been sentenced to life in prison if convicted.

“Fulwider’s day in court will never come because he knew all the truths I could tell,” the woman wrote in a statement published by the Sentinel.

Fulwider co-hosted the weekly “Friends Talking Faith” on Orlando radio station WMFE.

His attorney, Jacob Stuart Jr., said his client denied the allegations. He criticized the way Fulwider was portrayed in the media, legal system and in the community saying that his client was not treated by the standard of “innocent until proven guilty.”

“This was not the case when it comes to Reverend Fulwider, especially when the ‘charges’ were measured against his innocence and when the salacious sensationalism of the accusations were compared to the facts,” Stuart said. “Reverend Fulwider’s rights were denied.”

Severe weather that spawned Dallas tornado moves east, 1 killed by falling tree in Arkansas

A line of potent thunderstorms responsible for the powerful tornado that tore through parts of Dallas late Sunday has moved east, blasting the region with strong winds and leaving at least one person dead after a tree fell on an Arkansas home early Monday.

The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said numerous showers and thunderstorms were expected to continue throughout the day along the Mississippi River Valley southward to the Gulf Coast ahead of a cold front.

“There will be enough instability ahead of the front across parts of the Deep South to support the development of some strong to severe thunderstorms on Monday, and there may be additional strong storms over the Southeast U.S. on Tuesday,” the NWS said.

The strong to severe thunderstorm threat from the Gulf Coast to the Ohio Valley brings the threat of large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain, and possible tornadoes, according to Fox News Senior Meteorologist Janice Dean.

“We had a tornado yesterday in Dallas, Texas it came overnight, last night. We have the threat for severe weather today, again,” Dean said on “Fox & Friends.” “Just be aware we could see the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms, know what to do if there is a watch or warning.”

DALLAS STARS’ TYLER SEGUIN LOSES HOME IN TORNADO, SAYS IT’S ‘EXTREMELY SAD SIGHT TO SEE’

In Arkansas, one person was killed just after midnight after a tree fell on a home in Rogers, located about 150 miles northwest of Little Rock, according to an NWS report.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson also confirmed the death on Twitter, saying “significant storm damage” was reported in the northwest part of the state.

The storms, which struck the Dallas area late Sunday, moved through Arkansas in the early morning hours on Monday, triggering several tornado warnings while damage was also reported in the northeast corner of the state. Tornado warnings were in effect Monday morning in far eastern Arkansas near the Mississippi River as the storm system moved to the east.

Damage was also reported in Oklahoma and Missouri, and tens of thousands of customers in the Memphis area were without power after the storms moved through, FOX13 reported.

In Dallas, many people spent Monday assessing the damage after the tornado struck the northern part of the city.

The twister touched down around 9 p.m. near Love Field Airport in North Dallas before moving northeast through the city, knocking out power for thousands. The tornado’s path took it through the Walnut Lane area of Dallas before it moved through sections of Garland, Richardson, Rockwall and Sachse.

In the Royal Lane area, Jeff Nguyen told FOX4 his children were upstairs when tornado sirens began blaring. Nguyen said his wife was trying to make it up the stairs when the tornado began to blow their roof off and “threw her back down the stairs.”

“I kind of pushed her down and got past her and got upstairs. My son was up in his bed with the covers over him. The window blew out and flew into the side of his bed,” he told FOX4. “If he didn’t have a bunk bed I don’t know where it would have landed on him. But that probably saved him.”

TORNADO RIPS THROUGH DALLAS, LEAVING SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE AND THOUSANDS WITHOUT POWER

There were no reports of fatalities or serious injuries early Monday, according to a release from the city of Dallas, but Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans told the Associated Press that three people were hospitalized for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries.

Search teams were set to begin a second round of efforts at daylight, according to Evans, who told the AP that crews have responded to “everything from power lines down to fallen trees to people being injured inside of their homes by broken glass.”

The storm’s fury was captured on social media, with one video showing debris flying around.

Damage within Dallas is limited to an area bordered by Royal Lane to the north and Northwest Highway to the south, as well as Harry Hines Boulevard to the west and Interstate 75 to the east — essentially, northwest Dallas, according to Evans. Video of the twister showed electrical flashes as it moved northeast, bringing down power lines.

Nearly 140,000 electric customers were without power in Texas as of 4 a.m. Monday, according to Oncor’s online outage map. The electric utility said storms across East Texas had caused significant damage to power lines.

Mayor Eric Johnson said the city of Dallas opened the Bachman Recreation Center with the help of the Red Cross. The shelter will be open for anyone who was displaced by the storm, remains without power or needs help. The Red Cross is assessing if additional shelters need to be opened.

Citing extensive damage to campuses, the Dallas Independent School District canceled Monday classes at six schools.

Florida wildlife officials capture 18-foot, 98-pound Burmese python

Officials in South Florida captured a record-breaking 18-foot, 4-inch Burmese python in Big Cypress National Preserve last month as part of an ongoing effort to remove the invasive species from the Sunshine State.

Cynthia Downer and Jonathan Lopez of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Python Action Team (FWC PAT) captured the 98-pound, 10-ounce female snake on Sept. 22, the commission announced Friday.

It is the largest snake ever caught by the team and the largest captured at the Big Cypress preserve. It’s also the second-largest python ever caught in the wild in Florida and just four inches short of being the longest wild python ever captured in Florida.

According to Fox 13 Tampa, the largest python ever caught in Florida was captured in 2013. That female python was over 18 feet, 8 inches long and weighed 128 pounds.

“Capturing large adult females is critical because it prevents them from potentially adding an average of 30 to 60 hatchlings to the population each time they breed,” the FWC said in a statement.

“These snakes, coupled with the thousands removed by our partners at the National Park Service and the South Florida Water Management District, make a significant impact to protect Florida’s native wildlife,” FWC Executive Director Eric Sutton said in a statement. “With leadership from Gov. Ron DeSantis, we are committed to working with our partners […] to accomplish our goal of removing pythons from our beautiful state.”

PIT BULL DIES AFTER PROTECTING FLORIDA KIDS FROM SNAKE, FAMILY SAYS

Environmentalists say Burmese pythons are responsible for killing deer, alligators and other important wildlife in the state. Their presence in the wild is the result of the snakes escaping or being released from homes where people keep them as pets.

The FWC also announced Friday that its Python Action Team had captured its 900th Burmese python on Sept. 24 in the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area in Miami-Dade County. That snake weighed just a quarter of a pound and measured just over two feet long.

The public can help by reporting snake sightings online, using the app “IVEGOT1” or by calling the state’s Exotic Species Hotline at 888-IveGot1 (888-483-4681), the commission added.

Former Georgia cop who fatally shot unarmed fleeing man acquitted of manslaughter

A since-fired Georgia police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man fleeing after a confrontation was found not guilty Saturday of voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter.

However, Zecheriah Presley was convicted of violating his oath of office by shooting Tony Green, 33, in Camden County last year. Presley was fired from the Kingsland Police Department as a result of the incident and indicted by a grand jury after Green was found to be unarmed.

Presley was ordered to be jailed pending sentencing Oct. 18. He faces a prison term of one to five years. He could have faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted of manslaughter.

News4Jax reported that the trial judge ordered deliberations to continue with an alternate juror earlier Saturday after the only black member of the panel fell ill.

Though Presley’s body camera recorded the ordeal, darkness and something covering the camera lens left the jury without a clear video of the shooting and the moments leading up to it.

Presley said he followed Green’s car on the night of June 20, 2018, because he believed Green was driving on a suspended license. Dash camera video showed Green drive off the side of the road, open the car door and run. He returned to the vehicle briefly to grab an object, then fled again.

Presley chased Green on foot down a dark street, before a short struggle that was not seen on video. The recording picked up the electrified clicking sound from Presley’s Taser, followed by eight gunshots.

Presley told another officer who arrived on the scene that Green had been on top of him, trying to grab his taser. “And then I was going for my gun, and he started taking off. And I fired,” Presley said on the video. “I thought he was going to kill me,” he added, according to First Coast News.

WASHINGTON STATE TEEN’S COLD CASE MURDER CRACKED AFTER NEARLY THREE DECADES

An autopsy found Green had been struck by bullets eight times. He’d had small amounts of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and a tranquilizer in his system.

On the witness stand Wednesday, Presley added new details to his account. He said he opened fire only after Green turned back to face him and extended an arm, making Presley believe he had a gun. Investigators found Green was carrying a cell phone.

“Tony Green was not shot because of misdemeanor offenses,” said defense attorney Adrienne Browning in her closing argument Thursday. “He was shot because of bad decision after bad decision until the threat was overwhelming and Zech feared for his life.”

“He made a fatal mistake and it was a mistake that cost a man his life,” prosecutor Rocky Bridges said of Presley in his closing argument. “You don’t have to like Tony Green. … He ran from the police, not a good decision. But he was not armed. He did not turn on officer Presley. He did not deserve to die.”

Prosecutors said Presley had 474 days from the shooting to the beginning of the trial to craft his story in compliance with the law. “If he really thought he grabbed a weapon, if he really thought that’s what happened, you get on the radio and call for backup. You don’t run and chase after an individual with your Taser drawn,” Bridges told the jury, according to News4Jax. “He had the opportunity to say, ‘I thought I saw a gun. He pointed the gun at me. He turned on me.’ You didn’t hear that.”

“My son was murdered,” Green’s father, Wayne Anderson, told News4Jax after the verdict was read. “The man that murdered my son gets to go home to his sons … and can only possibly serve one to five for murder.

“This ought to serve notice to a lot of our young black men and black men, period, that you can run up and down the football field, you can run on down the courts, you can hit baseballs, you can do it,” Anderson said. “But at the end of the day, when [they] see you, they see a black man.”

Florida animal rescue groups launch desperate search to find disabled dog stolen with car

Florida animal rescue groups have stepped in to help a woman desperate to find her disabled dog after her car was stolen with the husky mix inside.

Wanda Ferrari had left the air conditioning on for her 13-year-old dog Zorra, whose back legs are paralyzed, while she popped into a Dollar Tree in Oakland Park, just north of Fort Lauderdale. When Ferrari returned, she found her car and dog had disappeared.

“She’s been my whole life. I rescued her and she rescued me, Ferrari told CBS Miami, adding that the dog has been her constant companion as she fights a recurrence of breast cancer.

Zorra uses a pink wheelchair to walk but was lying on a pillow in the backseat of the car when it was stolen.

“I was in shock. And you know, the shock wore off,” Ferrari continued. “And then, I was traumatized, and in tears, because my girl was in the back, you know. I’m like, ‘who would do that? Who would take a car with a dog?’ They probably didn’t know,”

“Whoever took the car, if you just need the car, that’s not a problem. Just please take care of my baby and let me know where to come get her.,” Ferrari pleaded. “Please, if you have her, please, just bring my baby, please bring her back. Just, just please, I don’t care about the car. Bring my baby back.”

North Carolina college professor suspended after allegedly calling women ‘useless’ during lecture

A North Carolina college professor has been suspended after he was accused of saying “women are useless” during a lecture on Tuesday.

North Carolina State University spokeswoman Lauren Leslie Barker told Fox News Thursday that it is “actively investigating reports of inappropriate language in the classroom” and that the “faculty member has been immediately suspended from teaching while this incident is being further investigated.”

Students told WTVD-TV that physics professor Dr. E. David Davis was lecturing and randomly calling on students to answer questions when a female student could not correctly answer a question. That is when the situation reportedly escalated.

Junior Maira Haque told WRAL-TV that Davis told the student: “You’re 20 years old and you forgot to bring this assignment in. Were you dropped on the head as a child? Do you have memory problems?”

Haque said the professor called on another female student to answer a question, which she could not do.

“Before he even could begin berating her or anything, she just straight up said, ‘I have memory problems too,’” Haque said. “Everyone laughed but, he kind of kept going and he was like, ‘I guess the women in this class are useless. I guess I should call on a man.’”

Haque told the station she then stood up and questioned why the professor was using that language.

“The professor justified his comments by saying, ‘Well, obviously, it was a joke. Women are obviously useful. We need them for a species to reproduce,’” Haque told the news outlet.

One student in the class took a cellphone video of Davis saying: “It’s a joke. I mean, obviously women are not useless.” The student posted the video on Twitter and referred to the professor as a “women hater.”

Barker told Fox News: “Reports were shared with the university via Twitter” as well as through the school’s Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity.

She added, “At NC State we take pride in our campus culture which values and strives to live our commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity.”

Davis did not immediately return messages from Fox News seeking comment.
