Oklahoma driver goes around roadblocks set up for flooding, ends up crashing into sinkhole

A driver in Oklahoma who ignored barricades set up amid ongoing flooding ended up needing to be rescued on Wednesday after crashing into a sinkhole, according to officials.

The incident happened in the town Blackburn, located northwest along the Arkansas River where flooding has inundated communities for more than a week.

In a Facebook post, city officials said the man with a dog in the back of his truck drove around barricades and ended up crashed into a sinkhole.

Officials posted photos of the crash, which showed the truck almost completely submerged, with a broken windshield and crumpled hood.

Northeastern Oklahoma has been besieged by floodwaters along the turbulent Arkansas River amid record rainfall. Emergency management officials in Tulsa said Saturday they are seeking volunteers wearing boots and heavy leather work gloves to help residents remove debris and clean up their flooded homes.

ARKANSAS CITY TRYING TO SAVE HOMES IN EFFORT TO STEM FLOW OF MASSIVE FLOODING

The National Weather Service said Friday the river’s level at Tulsa has dropped almost 4 feet from Wednesday’s crest and will continue to recede through the weekend.

River levels were also dropping in Muskogee, Okla., about 45 miles southeast of Tulsa, according to forecasters.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said a hydroelectric dam at a reservoir northwest of Tulsa has reduced flow as the reservoir drains floodwaters from recent heavy rainfall, aiding the river’s decline.

But officials are saying that they are not out of the woods yet. More rain is expected to begin Monday, adding more strain to a levee system that’s already been tested by floodwaters.

“The real challenge is that, presented to us, we have levee system that is now weakened, having experienced an unprecedented rain on it which it has had over the past two weeks now,” Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum told Fox News on Friday. “And our lake that protects Tulsa from floodwaters is still about a foot above the flood pool it; doesn’t have the kind of storage capacity that it needs to protect our community from floodwaters.”

This snake wanted an unwelcome visitor to … well, hiss off.

A doorbell camera captured the shocking moment when a man attempting to enter an Oklahoma home was attacked by a concealed snake.

The video, posted to Facebook Tuesday by Marshawn Copeland, showed a family friend approaching Copeland’s father’s home in Lawton, Okla., KOCO 5 reported.

As the visitor opened the screen door, a large snake suddenly popped into the frame and appeared to nip him on the face.

He ran into the home shouting, as the snake retreated.

(Warning: video contains graphic language)

Copeland told KOCO 5 it was a bullsnake, which is not venomous, and the man is doing fine.

The snake, however, was not so lucky.

Other videos posted to Facebook by Copeland show a neighbor beat the serpent to death with hammers.

Trump pardons ex-Army lieutenant convicted of killing suspected Al Qaeda terrorist in 2009

President Trump has pardoned a former Army lieutenant who was convicted in 2009 of killing an Iraqi prisoner suspected of being an Al Qaeda terrorist, the White House announced Monday evening.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders cited “broad support” for Michael Behenna, of Edmond, Okla., “from the military, Oklahoma elected officials, and the public” — including 37 generals and admirals, along with a former Pentagon inspector general — as the reason for Trump’s clemency grant. Sanders also said Behenna had been a “model prisoner” while serving his sentence.

“In light of these facts, Mr. Behenna is entirely deserving of this Grant of Executive Clemency,” Sanders concluded.

A military court originally sentenced Behenna to 25 years for unpremeditated murder in a combat zone. However, the Army’s highest appellate court noted concern about how the trial court had handled Behenna’s claim of self-defense, Sanders said. The Army Clemency and Parole Board reduced his sentence to 15 years and paroled him in 2014, as soon as he was eligible.

Behenna acknowledged during his 2008 trial that instead of taking prisoner Ali Mansur home as he was ordered, he took the man to a railroad culvert, stripped him, and then questioned him at gunpoint about a roadside bombing that had killed two members of Behenna’s platoon.

Behenna, who was 24 at the time, said he acted in self-defense when Mansur threw a chunk of concrete at him and reached for the lieutenant’s handgun. Army prosecutors said the argument didn’t stand up because Behenna was already pointing his weapon at the prisoner.

In 2018, Behenna’s parents told Fox News the prosecution failed to disclose that their own expert’s analysis supported their son’s version of events. The expert felt so strongly that he reached out to the Behennas about his findings.

Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter initially requested a pardon for Behenna in February 2018 and renewed his request last month. Hunter said he believed Behenna’s conviction was unjustified because of erroneous jury instructions and the failure of prosecutors to turn over evidence supporting a self-defense claim. The White House statement said that former Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin and “numerous members” of Oklahoma’s congressional delegation had also expressed support for Behenna.

Police in the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond announced Wednesday that a naked 17-year-old high school student was not armed when he was fatally shot by police Monday after breaking into a home.

The Oklahoma state medical examiner’s office identified the student as Isaiah Mark Lewis. Police initially said he was an adult following the shooting. Officers began searching for the teen after a woman called 911 to report a domestic disturbance for her neighbor.

Jenny Wagnon, Edmond police’s spokeswoman, said Lewis was shot after fighting with two officers who first used a stun gun on him. When the stun gun failed to subdue him, Wagnon said at least one officer then fired a handgun.

“We know a Taser was deployed because we found the probes in the suspect,” according to Wagnon, who said one officer was treated at a hospital for a head injury and released.

Lewis was transported to the hospital where he died.

The department Wednesday identified the officers involved as Sgt. Milo Box and Officer Denton Scherman. Box has worked at the department for 17 years and Scherman was hired in September. Wagnon said neither officer was wearing a body camera during the shooting. The Oklahoman reported Box and Scherman were placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

Lewis attended an alternative school for students who were behind in their graduation requirements.

“He had completed his coursework and was set to walk with his classmates … in graduation ceremonies on May 18,” Edmond Public Schools spokeswoman Susan Parks-Schlepp told The Associated Press.

Lewis’ family held a press conference Wednesday regarding the shooting.

“They don’t get to assassinate my son’s character,” Vicki Lewis, the teen’s mother said, according to KFOR.

“He doesn’t get to graduate May 18th like he could have,” she continued. “He didn’t go to the prom.”

During the Monday 911 call that prompted the police response, a woman who identifies herself as Lewis’ 18-year-old girlfriend tried to take the phone from her neighbor to tell dispatchers that her “boyfriend just flipped out. I have no idea what’s going on.”

Other 911 calls later reported Lewis stripped off his clothes as he ran down the street. Police later said they chased him as he jumped fences before breaking into the house where he was shot.

Kamri Pollock, the woman who claimed to be Lewis’ girlfriend, told KFOR she saw no reason for police to be involved and she wanted to know “what he was on.” Police said they would have to await a toxicology report to determine if he was on drugs.

Lewis’ mother told KFOR she had never met Pollock.

The medical examiner’s office said only that Lewis suffered “multiple gunshot wounds” and that a final autopsy report is pending.

Oklahoma mom says three children hit by police during shootout

An Oklahoma mother is fearing for her children’s lives after a police shootout caused left three of her four children with injuries.

Olivia Hill and her four children were in a pickup truck driven by William Devaughn Smith, 21, who police in Hugo pegged as a suspect in an April 11 armed robbery of a Pizza Hut.

According to KXII-TV, officers approached Smith near the Texas state line on Friday and a shootout ensued.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) said the incident started after Smith allegedly hit a Hugo police officer with his vehicle while trying to get away.

A second deputy reportedly was nearly hit by the truck and fired shots in fear for his safety.

“As they tried to approach the suspect, there was an incident that happened. An officer-involved shooting took place,” said OSBI spokeswoman Jenny Virden told KXII-TV.

The OSBI said Smith is in custody, two officers had minor injuries and the three innocent children were hospitalized.

The hospital where the children are being treated didn’t release their condition, but Hill says her 2-year-old child was not hurt. The other three, she said, were not as lucky.

“My 4-year-old daughter was shot in the head, and she has a bullet in her brain, and my 5-year-old has a skull fracture,” Hill told news station KXII-TV. “My 1-year-old baby has gunshot wounds on her face.”

Virden was unable to confirm whether officers knew the kids were inside the truck when they started shooting.

“Of course we’re still talking to witnesses, doing interviews and we’re still trying to find out exactly what happened,” she said.

Hugo police say Smith was shot in the incident and was treated and released to police custody from a Paris hospital.

Hugo police said on their Facebook page that Smith allegedly entered the back entrance of the restaurant, pressed an object to an employee’s back and demanded money. Police said the worker handed over money and the robber left.

Smith hasn’t been formally charged yet in the shooting or Pizza Hut robbery, but police told KXII-TV he’s in custody and faces a first-degree felony charge of aggravated robbery.

The lesson is clear: leave the chimney work to the professionals. Like Santa.

And that note of caution is particularly true for those climbing in with bad intentions — such as a would-be burglar who got caught at an Oklahoma business Monday after becoming trapped in a chimney for hours, officials said.

The Tulsa Fire Department told FOX23 the man had cut the electricity lines of an air conditioner and attempted to shimmy down the chimney of the business when he became stuck.

Eva Sigala, who works at the Durango Auto Center, said her boss raised the alarm when he heard noises emanating from the chimney early in the morning.

“Well he came in this morning and he heard a whining and crying noise and at first he thought it was a pigeon, because we get pigeons stuck in there all the time and he listened closer and heard ‘help’, that’s when he left, closed the door and called the cops,” she told FOX23.

Firefighters said surveillance video showed the man trying to Kris Kringle his way down the chimney around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

The man, who was not immediately identified, ended up stuck there until rescuers pulled him out around 9:45 a.m. Fire officials had at one point considered dismantling the entire chimney but eventually extracted the man via a pulley system.

A man in Oklahoma caught a huge alligator gar in a lake over the weekend, the Oklahoma Game Wardens announced Monday.

Zachary Sutterfield, of Durant, was bowfishing on Lake Texoma when he caught the 6-foot, 9-inch fish. According to a Facebook post from the Game Wardens, the gar weighed about 170 pounds.

“Congratulations!! Its a very nice fish,” one person commented on the Game Warden’s post.

Another commenter was frightened by the catch, saying: “Oh crap, I remember swimming in that lake!”

Someone else added: “Nice!!! This is also why I don’t swim in lakes now that I am aware of what’s in them.”

Alligator gars (named for its alligator-looking snout) can be found in North and Central America and can grow up to 10 feet in length, National Geographic reports. Some have been known to reach 300 pounds.

While these prehistoric-looking creatures may look frightening, they aren’t known to attack people. That said, its eggs are poisonous to humans if eaten, according to the publication.

They typically prey on smaller fish but are also known to eat small turtles, ducks and other waterfowl.

The National Rifle Association filed a lawsuit Friday in Virgina against Ackerman McQueen, the Oklahoma-based ad agency that runs NRATV, accusing the contractor of withholding billing statements and alleging an inappropriate financial relationship between the NRA’s president and the advertising firm

ANDREW CUOMO USING BANKS TO TARGET NRA, FACES MAJOR LEGAL TEST

Ackerman McQueen was first contracted by the NRA in the 1980s. In 2016, the ad agency launched NRATV, which has been “perceived by the public as the voice of the N.R.A.,” according to the lawsuit. The NRA complaint alleges that the ad agency failed to provide adequate information over how Ackerman McQueen spent about $40 million paid by the NRA in 2017.

The lawsuit states that Ackerman McQueen only partially complied or “badly ignored” requests for backing paperwork on bills to the NRA, despite being contractually obligated to share these financial records. The complaint also claims Ackerman McQueen failed to reveal information regarding a separate contract with NRA President Oliver North.

North, who took over as president of the gun rights organization in 2018, allegedly had a contract to host a web series for Ackerman McQueen, The New York Times reported. The NRA claims the ad firm refused to hand over details regarding the contract for six months and raised questions over whether the messaging of the NRA has veered away from solely gun rights.

“This flagrant misrepresentation, along with other false claims, serve as the foundation of malicious intent exemplified by this lawsuit,” Ackerman McQueen said in a statement.

Ackerman McQueen said the NRA’s outside attorney William Brewer has a conflict of interest in this case because he is both the son-in-law of Angus McQueen and the brother-in-law of Revan McQueen, who are both executives at the ad firm.

Ackerman McQueen said in a statement Monday that an NRA forensic auditing firm received every piece of information it requested during a three-week review.

“This flagrant misrepresentation, along with other false claims, serve as the foundation of malicious intent exemplified by this lawsuit,” Ackerman McQueen’s statement says.

Oklahoma dad’s actions helped save daughter’s life after ‘sudden death’: report

An Oklahoma father’s quick thinking helped save his 6-year-old daughter’s life after the child suddenly collapsed when her heart stopped from a condition doctors call “sudden death,” a report said last week.

Peyton Woods was on vacation in Missouri with her family when she came down with what her parents believed was “a typical respiratory issue,” reported KFOR-TV of Oklahoma City.

The family saw an urgent care doctor and was picking up medicine at a Walmart when the 6-year-old fell to the floor. Peyton’s father, Ricky, started chest compressions, even though he had never been trained, he told the station.

“I couldn’t wait on anyone else to come,” he said. “I mean, two minutes later, I don’t know if we’d be sitting here.”

Doctors at The Children’s Hospital at OU Medicine determined the child had “sudden death,” secondary to the heart-stopping,” the station reported. It’s a rare condition, with symptoms that are usually present after birth due to a slow or abnormal rhythm of the heart, called arrhythmia, the station reported.

While Peyton was given a pacemaker and expected to lead a normal life, the incident inspired both her parents to get CPR training.

“I got lucky, but I would have liked to have been more prepared, I think,” Ricky Woods told the station. “But, we’re thankful, and we’re definitely humbled to be here right now.”
