Rep. Dan Crenshaw rips Antifa demonstrators, blasts Portland protests as ‘sad showing’

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6060288835001_6060285929001-vs Rep. In a Twitter message Saturday, U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw declared Saturday’s protests in Portland, Ore., “a sad showing,” and said the city’s Antifa activists paled in comparison to the demonstrators fighting for democracy in Hong Kong.

“In Hong Kong,” the Republican congressman from Texas wrote, “antifascists wave American flags, demand freedom and actually fight fascists.

“In Portland,” he continued, “ ‘antifascists’ burn American flags, demand violence in the name of socialism.”

JOURNALIST ATTACKED BY ANTIFA: ‘CRIMINAL CARTEL’ WANTS VIOLENT REVOLUTION, SHOULD BE DESIGNATED AS TERROR ORGANIZATION

Crenshaw, 35, is in his first term in the U.S. House after being elected las November. The former U.S. Navy SEAL served in Afghanistan and is the recipient of two Bronze Stars for heroic service and a Purple Heart after being wounded in combat.

On Saturday, demonstrators from both left-wing and right-wing groups converged in Portland, Ore., the scene of numerous violent confrontations in the past.

As of Saturday evening, the city’s mayor was declaring the day’s events “largely peaceful,” with 13 arrests and a small number of minor injuries reported.

Members of the Proud Boys and other conservative groups have argued that Antifa protesters have instigated violence at their events, but have often escaped prosecution because many of their members keep their faces covered during attacks.

In July, the city’s police chief called for new laws against wearing masks during such protests.

“We cannot allow people to continue to use the guide of free speech to commit a crime,” Chief Danielle Outlaw said.

On Saturday, President Trump threatened to push for Antifa to be declared a terror organization.

As a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, Crenshaw frequently speaks out on matters of security and terrorism.

In July, Crenshaw accused Democratic U.S. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., of using the U.S.-Mexico border crisis as a stage for criticizing President Trump rather than for proposing solutions to the nation’s immigration problem.

“What they really want is more commissions … more investigations they can point to, to call the president evil,” Crenshaw said during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.” “That’s what they want.”

In June, Crenshaw went after Democratic U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, accusing her of “literally repeating the lies of the Iranian regime” after she asserted that President Trump was trying to provoke a conflict with Iran.

Ransomware attack cripples at least 20 local Texas agencies, state government says

Westlake Legal Group 563275-ransomware-photo-credit-should-read-rob-engelaar-afp-getty-images Ransomware attack cripples at least 20 local Texas agencies, state government says Melissa Leon fox-news/us/us-regions/southwest/texas fox-news/us/crime fox-news/tech/topics/cybercrime fox news fnc/tech fnc article 6546d61e-8276-5095-bb60-6fc821132e01

At least 20 local government entities across Texas have been taken hostage by a coordinated ransomware attack, the Texas Department of Information Resources announced Friday.

The specific agencies and their jurisdictions were not disclosed, nor did the department say whether the cybercriminals had specified an amount to pay in ransom.

Ransomware is a type of malware, or malicious software, that locks a computer and all its data until a user pays a specified amount to regain control of the system. Attackers typically request payment in mostly untraceable digital currency such as Bitcoin. Once the ransom is paid, a key is given that unlocks the computer. Ransomware is spread unknowingly through infected websites and phishing, or spam, emails.

RANSOMWARE IS A ‘BESTSELLER’ ON UNDERGROUND HACKER FORUMS

Texas DIR press secretary Elliot Sprehe told KUT Radio that the department was still gathering information about the attack.

“It looks like we found out earlier today, but we’re not currently releasing who’s impacted due to security concerns,” he told the station Friday.

The Texas Military Department and Texas A&M University System’s Cyberresponse and Security Operations Center are responding to the more “critically impacted” areas, the state’s IT department said.

CITY OF ATLANTA HIT BY RANSOMWARE ATTACK

“DIR is fully committed to respond swiftly to this event and provide the necessary resources to bring these entities back online,” it added.

Texas is not the first state to fall victim to ransomware attacks. It isn’t uncommon for hackers to demand up to six-figure sums in order to get governments’ computer systems back up and running, and it’s also not unusual for towns to actually pay the ransom.

BALTIMORE HIT BY RANSOMWARE ATTACK, FORCING OFFICIALS TO SHUT DOWN CITY’S SERVERS

For example, CNBC reported in June that Baltimore had spent millions to regain access to its networks following ransomware attacks.

And in two Florida towns, hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent to obtain access to their local government networks again.

SECOND FLORIDA CITY DECIDES TO PAY RANSOMWARE HACKERS

In Riviera Beach, Fla., the city paid $600,000 in ransom. Lake City, located west of Jacksonville, spent nearly half a million dollars to get its data unlocked.

The FBI estimates that more than 4,000 ransomware attacks have taken place every day since Jan. 1, 2016, marking a 300-percent increase over the roughly 1,000 estimated daily attacks in 2015.

Texas dad charged with homicide after 12-year-old daughter crashes SUV into man and his dog

A Houston man was charged with negligent homicide and endangering a child Friday after police say his 12-year-old daughter drove an SUV into a man and his dog, killing them both.

Prosecutors say Tomas Mejia, 42, was charged because he allowed a “child to operate a motor vehicle with no driver’s license and no driving experience.” Each charge carries a sentence of up two years in prison.

Partner of El Paso shooting victim overwhelmed by hundreds of strangers at funeral

Hundreds of strangers braved 100-degree Texas heat on Friday to pay respects to a woman they had never met, but had died tragically in the El Paso shooting, leaving behind only her longtime companion.

Margie Reckard, 63, was one of the 22 victims who were killed during the Walmart shooting earlier this month.

Her heartbroken partner of 22 years, Antonio Basco, invited the public to her funeral services, saying he had no direct relatives or family members.

The response to the invitation was unimaginable.

On Friday morning, hundreds of people from all over the country – including from Dayton, Ohio, the site of a mass shooting less than a day after the attack in El Paso – filled up the La Paz Faith Memorial & Spiritual Center. A line snaked around the church and on the blocks beyond.

“I arrived here this morning,” Jordan Ballard, a 38-year-old Los Angeles resident who bought a plane ticket after learning of the Texas man’s invitation. “His story moved me.”

A 14-year-old Texas teen is reportedly in a medically induced coma after he was allegedly sucked into a water park drain possibly in a dare-gone-wrong scenario on Saturday.

The teen, who was not identified by law enforcement to local media outlets due to his age, was at the Fun Town Water Park in Crystal Beach when tragedy struck.

The teen allegedly slipped after picking up the drain grate and was sucked in, causing major internal injuries. Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset, who described the teen to KTRK.com as 5 feet 11 inches, said that it may have been a possible dare and that someone was able to quickly shut the pipes off enabling him to escape, but it wasn’t enough to prevent injury.

“Even after they turned the pump off, there was still a suction keeping him down,” Trochesset told KHOU 11.

He reportedly told the news outlet that the teen was conscious at the time of the incident and apologized to his father, who is a volunteer fireman.

“He told his dad, ‘I love you, sorry it happened,” Trochesset told the news outlet. “He was able to stand up. They walked him away from the area to the gurney to get into the ambulance.”

The teen was taken to University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where he remains in critical condition, according to local outlets.

Troschesset, who was not immediately available to comment to Fox News, described the incident to local outlets as “tragic” for the family and said, “prayers are going to be needed.”

A vigil was held in the teen’s honor, and several fundraisers, as well as a GoFundMe, have been set up to help keep supporters updated.

Texas woman says McDonald’s manager had surprising response to her request for help in feeding homeless

An extremely generous Texan’s attempt to “do something good” worked out better than she was expecting.

Hazeal Cain was attempting to help feed the homeless by handing out plates of food in Corpus Christi when ran she began to run low. Not wanting anyone to go hungry, she went to a nearby McDonald’s to grab an order of burgers. When she asked if anyone at the restaurant wanted to chip in, the manager’s response surprised her.

Cain claims she initially ordered $40 worth of hamburgers, but, unsure if this would be enough, she told the staff what she was doing and asked if anyone would be willing to help.

Cain posted her story on Facebook, where she says that the manager immediately added another $20 to the fund.

According to her post, “I went into the McDonald’s on leopard street, this particular McDonald’s is also in a poverty-stricken area, but upon showing up I told the manager that I would like to purchase $40 of cheeseburgers[,] and if McDonald’s would like to contribute anything extra to feed these homeless people I would appreciate it. The manager Matthew, without hesitation, immediately took $20 out of his wallet and said, “I’ll contribute.” So, together we purchased over 60 cheeseburgers to give to hungry people.”

Cain also described how the staff came together to quickly make the large order and pack it up for her.

“The hospitality of the whole crew was amazing,” she posted. “How the whole crew came together and made all these burgers and bagged them for us was amazing. To see them happy about giving something back was amazing. The joy on their faces.”

“This needs to be recognized,” the post concluded. “Somehow for this whole crew to act so immediately and with such humility was incredible.”

The shift manager, Matthew Ortiz, told local news outlet 3 Kiii TV: “My mother and father always told me, ‘If you have extra money, just give it out.’”

Cain, meanwhile, is just happy that her story might inspire people to “show love and support to those in difficult times.” She told Fox News that she had no intention of this being a “media attention thing” and that “it feels amazing to see people’s reaction to hope and love.”

“And it feels more amazing to see this one act of kindness being shared to hundreds of timelines,” she added. “It feels good to know that people are smiling, even for a moment.”

A Dallas-area Muslim cleric was ordered Thursday to pay $2.5 million to a woman he’s accused of sexually exploiting.

District Court Judge Emily Tobolowsky ruled that the cleric, Imam Zia ul-Haq Sheikh, 50, must compensate the woman for mental anguish and other damages, The Dallas Morning News reported. Sheikh had been an imam at the Islamic Center of Irving, one of the biggest mosques in Texas.

In an email to the paper, he said he believed the judgment was in error.

“Unfortunately, litigation in this country does not always favor the truth,” he said. “In most cases, it boils down to how much financial stamina one has, and whether one has good legal representation.”

Sheikh was accused of sexually exploiting the woman — identified only as Jane Doe — after providing her with mental health services when she turned 18.

“Jane’s emotional dependency as a result of being counseled by defendant from age 13 to age 19 led Jane to be fearful of losing defendant’s support in her life, and therefore created a situation where Jane was unable to refuse defendant’s requests,” the lawsuit said, referring to Sheikh’s alleged requests for sexually explicit photos and videos, and, ultimately, for intercourse.

When the woman was 19, the pair had sex at a motel, according to the paper. Sheikh gave her a pregnancy test afterward to ensure he wouldn’t lose his job. He later cut off contact with her.

The woman’s attorney, Susan Adams, told the paper in a statement that the judgment “offers justice and hope not only to her but to other survivors of abuse.”

Dog in Texas dies from toxic algae found in river, owner claims: ‘I blame myself’

A Texas woman is using the unexpected death of her beloved dog as a warning to other pet owners to be wary of water that may contain toxic algae.

Tamra Massey, of Austin, told Fox 7 she took her Australian Shepherd, Fina, to the Guadalupe River on July 31. The dog — which “loved the water,” she said — began acting strangely not long after she finished her swim.

Fina, according to Massey, began to vomit, was “stiff-legged” and “got off balance.” She also claims the 3-year-old dog had “two seizures in less than 5 minutes” after emerging from the river, she told the news station.

BEWARE THE TOXIC ALGAE THAT CAN KILL YOUR DOG

Despite Massey’s best efforts — she quickly took the dog to the hospital — it was too late.

“Rushed her to the vet — that took about 15 minutes. Five minutes after that there was nothing they could do for her. Her diaphragm had seized up. He said that was one of the symptoms, muscle paralysis,” she said.

“It’s been hard — it’s been really, really hard and I blame myself,” she told Fox 7. “I’ve been told not to but I just want people to not go through this.”

Massey claims the water was so clear she could “see straight through to the bottom.” Later, however, the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality confirmed to her that toxic blue-green algae were present in the river, which is located steps away from her backyard.

Experts say that the algae can form in different bodies of water.

“Cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae) are microscopic bacteria found in freshwater lakes, streams, ponds and brackish water ecosystems,” explains the Pet Poison Helpline on its website. “They can produce toxins (such as microcystins and anatoxins) that affect people, livestock and pets that swim in and drink from the algae-contaminated water.”

“While most blue-green algae blooms do not produce toxins, it is not possible to determine the presence of toxins without testing,” the helpline adds. “Thus, all blooms should be considered potentially toxic. Very small exposures, such as a few mouthfuls of algae-contaminated water, may result in fatal poisoning.”

Dogs, in particular, are at risk of algal toxin poisoning, according to Greenwater Laboratories, which tests for harmful algal blooms.

“The most sensitive individuals to algal toxin poisoning are those that ingest cyanobacteria when they are in the water,” it explains on its website. “Many times, those individuals are dogs, since they are entering and exiting algal blooms at shorelines. It is a good idea to keep pets out of the water when cyanobacteria may be present.”

Symptoms to look out for after your dog has been swimming include vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and hyper-salivation.

In a Facebook post that’s been shared nearly 300 times, Massey warned other pet owners of the dangers of blue-green algae.

“The water was not ‘infested’ with the algae, nor did it look stagnant… [or] else I wouldn’t have let her in it,” she wrote.

Massey said she thinks Fina likely ate some algae.

“She loved biting at leaves, and things floating [in] the water. But even if she would have simply gotten some on her fur and then groomed herself, the outcome would likely have been the same,” she wrote.

“If you notice algae on the water, just stay away! You can NOT tell by looking at it if it is in the ‘blooming’ phase. Better safe than sorry,” she concluded.

“It’s been hard — it’s been really, really hard and I blame myself.”

Fina is not the first dog to die of toxic algae in the state. The dog, according to Fox 7, was the fourth in the Austin area to die after swimming in contaminated water. In fact, the city has warned pet owners not to let their pets swim in Lady Bird Lake as a result of algal blooms.

TOXIC ALGAE KILLS 3 DOGS HOURS AFTER THEY PLAYED IN NORTH CAROLINA POND, OWNER SAYS

“We have confirmed potentially harmful algal blooms in Lady Bird Lake & posted signs indicating the danger,” the city tweeted on Aug. 7.

In North Carolina, too, three dogs died earlier this month after swimming in a Wilmington pond and becoming exposed to toxic algae. Their owner posted on Facebook that the dogs “contracted blue-green algae poisoning” after their swim and that the algae killed the pets within a matter of hours.

Massey did not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment on Wednesday.
