Gun dealer who sold rifle to Gilroy shooter says he’s facing multiple lawsuits from victims

The Nevada weapons dealer who sold the gun used in the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting claims he’s facing “in theory, a minimum of 15 lawsuits” — or possibly even more — from the victims and their families.

A “customer and a friend” has started a GoFundMe campaign to help deal with the “frivolous lawsuits,” according to Michael Christopherson, owner of Big Mike’s Guns & Ammo.

Christopherson acknowledged that “some people will want to give to the [victims’] families instead of us” — saying, “We back you 100%.”

“We hope we dont need the funds and would love to return it or donate it,” Christopherson wrote on the Big Mike’s G&A Facebook page.

“All funds will be used to pay for legal expenses,” his friend said on GoFundMe. “Help Support Big Mikes G&A In Nevada against Frivolous lawsuits and to Provide additional safety measures to keep his family safe form ongoing threats of harm due to another person’s actions and shooting of innocent people in Gilroy.”

Christopherson posted a FB status on Wednesday, saying he would likely be facing at least 15 lawsuits — and possibly as many as 50 — when all is said and done, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

CALIFORNIA POLICE EXECUTE SEARCH WARRANTS AT GILROY GARLIC FESTIVAL SHOOTER’S HOME, CAR

He came under fire last week after revealing that it was his shop that sold the AR-style rifle used in the Gilroy massacre in California, which left three people dead and over a dozen injured.

The weapon was purchased legally.

“I did not know this individual,” Christopherson wrote on FB after the July 28 shooting. “When I did see him, he was acting happy and showed no reasons for concern. I would never ever sell any firearm to anyone who acted wrong or looks associated with any bad group like white power.”

Christopherson did not respond to requests for comment when reached Wednesday. It’s unclear if any of the suits he referenced have actually been filed yet.

“Big Mike and his family did nothing wrong and followed all laws,” his GoFundMe page reads. “If you are a Second Amendment supporter, we ask for your help to protect one of our own and their safety. All unused funds will be donated to victim funds.”

The campaign had raised $1,500 of its $10,000 goal as of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

White supremacist gang leader dies in Nevada state prison

The former leader of a white supremacist gang who was sentenced to 66 years in Nevada prison for multiple crimes, including attempting to murder a fellow inmate, died about two weeks ago after being incarcerated for more than two decades, officials said.

James Wallis, a convicted leader of the Aryan Leaders prison gang, died July 31, officials said.

Wallis started serving his sentence in 1995 after he was convicted in Clark County of attempted murder and other charges. He later became the leading member of the Aryan Warriors, a white-supremacist gang based in the Nevada prison system.

He was one of five reputed members of the Aryan Warriors convicted in 2009 of conspiring to engage in racketeering inside and outside of prison and participating in the earlier stabbing of a fellow gang member at the North Las Vegas jail.

Confirmation of his death was delayed until his family could be located. Members of the Aryan Warriors dawn distinct tattoos with Viking-related imagery, such as horned helmets, axes or shields, according to the Anti-Defamation League. Some of the shields include runic letters of an A or a W.

Gender-neutral restrooms planned for Nevada district’s newly built schools

A Nevada school district has eliminated separate male and female restrooms in its floor design for newly constructed schools, instead opting for gender-neutral facilities.

MISSOURI SCHOOL DISTRICT EMBRACES GENDER-NEUTRAL BATHROOMS

The Washoe County School District said Wednesday that newly built elementary and middle schools in the district will have gender-neutral restrooms complete with wall-to-ceiling stalls. All students will share a handwashing station in an open space of the restroom, Reno’s KTVN-TV reported.

“The architects and the school board really wanted us to come up with a new design for the student restrooms,” Adam Searcy, chief facilities officer at the Washoe County School District, said. “When you go into traditional restrooms, it’s an area where some students don’t really feel safe.”

In theory, the stalls that stretch from wall to ceiling will provide students with more privacy and help combat problems that the district has experienced in the past of students using cell phones to take photos of others underneath or over traditional restroom stalls, Searcy said.

The shared handwashing station located in an open space will allow school teachers and staff to more easily monitor students, Searcy also told KTVN.

One Nevada restaurant is making the most of the hordes of grasshoppers that have descended upon Las Vegas — by using them as inspiration for a pizza topping.

“What started out as a joke amongst our stoner friends has swept the nation,” Evel Pie, located on Fremont Street, announced on Facebook Tuesday. The pizza shop said their new pizza, dubbed “The Canyon Hopper,” is for “only the bravest daredevils.”

RESTAURANT BUSTED OVER SERVING PROTECTED TARANTULA TACOS

The pie consists of chorizo, goat cheese, caramelized onions, arugula, and, of course, lime- and garlic-roasted grasshoppers.

Described as “damn good,” Evel Pie said the creation’s tastiness surprised even the staff.

The inspiration for the pie likely stems from the insect influx Nevada has seen in recent weeks. Videos showed Las Vegas, in particular, was swarmed with grasshoppers — which pose no danger, as they don’t carry disease and don’t bite, according to scientists.

Jeff Knight, an entomologist with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, told local media last week that wet weather is probably to blame for the migration of adult pallid-winged grasshoppers.

He said the number of grasshoppers moving from north to central Nevada is rare, but noted that, as history shows, “when we have a wet winter or spring, these things build up often down below Laughlin and even into Arizona.”

The grasshopper invasion has been so prominent that the National Weather Service’s Las Vegas office released radar footage last week appearing to show a storm, which actually showed “biological targets” — the grasshoppers that invaded the city.

This year, the Las Vegas area recorded more rain in six months than the annual average of just under 4.2 inches per year.

Jesse Watters: Here’s why Trump probably hasn’t been told anything about Area 51

Ahead of a Facebook-advertised “storming” of Area 51, Jesse Watters considered whether President Trump has been told about what goes on at the secretive military installation.

If Trump is privy to top-secret information about the base, which has long been a point of discussion for conspiracy theorists who believe the facility holds government secrets about aliens and UFOs, it is surprising he hasn’t told the public, Watters said on “The Five.”

“I am surprised Trump has not slipped up about Area 51 yet,” he joked.

“The man cannot keep a secret. I don’t even think they told him about Area 51.”

‘STORM AREA 51’ SOCIAL MEDIA MOVEMENT IS ‘GETTING SOMEWHAT OUT OF HAND,’ SAYS UFO EXPERT

The “Watters’ World” host added Trump is often unusually open at campaign events — to a greater extent than past presidents.

“He’ll just let it go at a rally,” he said. “But if he has kept that secret, I am very proud.”

On Facebook, a page advertising the purported event went viral over the past week, as more than 1 million users responded they would go to the top-secret military installation on Sept. 20 at 3 a.m., with the creator writing “they can’t stop all of us.”

While it isn’t exactly known what the base is currently used for, Air Force spokeswoman Laura McAndrews told The Washington Post that Area 51 is where, “we train American armed forces” and “is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force.”

TRUMP’S’ OPINION ON UFOS: NOPE — BUT YOU NEVER KNOW

4 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE TOP-SECRET SITE, AREA 51

“The U.S. Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets,” McAndrews added. She discouraged civilians from visiting the area.

Regarding the base’s publicly-known history, Area 51 is a government facility in the Nevada desert near Groom Lake, a salt flat located about 120 miles north of Las Vegas. The site was chosen in the 1950s to secretly test the Air Force’s U-2 aircraft and train pilots, according to the CIA.

The area had earlier been used during World War II as an aerial gunnery range for Army pilots.

Employees take small, unmarked passenger planes from the Las Vegas airport to get to the remote area, according to Business Insider.

President Dwight Eisenhower approved the facility’s development in the 1950s, according to the CIA. The site was used by the Air Force to test the U-2 spy plane during the Cold War.

In 2013, the CIA acknowledged its existence, releasing its location and how it had been used to test military aircraft, including the F-117A, A-12 and TACIT BLUE, according to Business Insider.

More than 260,000 Facebook users have signed up – and nearly 300,000 more are interested – in an upcoming event called “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us.”

Explosions cause partial collapse of dorm at University of Nevada, Reno

Classes were canceled and several people suffered minor injuries Friday after a mechanical failure caused an explosion and the partial collapse of a student residence hall at the University of Nevada, Reno campus, authorities said.

Students were being evacuated from Argenta Hall and authorities were trying to determine if the building was still structurally sound following reports of loud blasts coming from the building’s basement.

The first explosion occurred around 1 p.m. and was followed by a larger explosion, the school said in a statement. The Reno Gazette-Journal reported six people were treated for injuries at the scene and released, and two were taken to a hospital and also released.

“We are confident — and lucky — that today, with a light day coming after a holiday, that we really didn’t have anybody in those halls,” university police chief Todd Renwick told the paper.

The dorms are not full during the summer, but there were still residents inside the hall, student Raven Green told The Associated Press. She was in her room watching Netflix when she heard a loud boom and felt the building shake.

“It was very scary,” she said.

She said she climbed over doors and pieces of drywall to reach the stairs, which were broken. She was eventually evacuated.

Photos of the building show blown out windows and damage on multiple floors. Sophomore Raymond Floyd heard what sounded like a loud door slam as he was studying for a calculus final across the street in Peavine Hall.

About 10 minutes after being evacuated, he heard a much bigger noise.

“I could see smoke and shrapnel in the air and parts of the roof flying off,” Floyd said.
